River Lee in Cork
River Lee, Cork

Another week of good salmon fishing on the River Lee as 35 salmon were landed by anglers fishing right throughout the system. The best of this week’s fish was 10lbs in weight and caught by a club angler on club waters at Inniscarra bridge.

Solid action on Currane when conditions came good

Lough Currane 20 July 2021
Lough Currane 20 July 2021

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

12/7/2023 Straight to the Sea Trout department, Dublin Currane angler Lesley Bishop, while fishing with her gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught and released a fine 2 lbs. Sea Trout, for the rest of the Currane anglers they were all quiet in all departments. Now we head across to the Inny and just for the record there were manipulations going on this morning but as of yet My WhatsApp isn’t in C&R mode, I would beg to differ. Wind WNW light followed by reasonable cloud cover.

13/7/2023 There was some good action in the Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout department today, so straight to the action, Clients trolling with their gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a fine Grilse/Salmon and finished their day off with two Trout. Staying in the Grilse/ Salmon department, another boat fishing on their own also caught a Grilse on the troll. Now we head for the drifting department, Currane Sea Trout Anglers while fly fishing on the drift on the Southside in and around Coffees Bay C&R 6 Juniors and followed that up with 12 Brown Trout. Now to the weather front, as we all know we had a good flood a few days ago, well, Kerry is on a yellow rain warning from 2am until 7pm tomorrow, the amount of rainfall for Waterville is 15.5 mm? Toady’s wind SW light followed by good cloud cover and followed by light rain at times.

14/7/2023 We head straight back to yesterday’s notes because it was brought to my attention by text today by local Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com  and I quote,

‘Hi Vincent, who is giving you misleading information, Phil Hawker had 3 sea trout 2/3 lbs and 1 salmon on the fly with me’.

So that puts yesterday’s notes corrected. Now today’s action. We start on the Northshore and at [email protected] Currane angler Mr. Bob white caught a fine 5 ½ lb Grilse on the troll and finished his day off with 4 juniors, 1 on the fly while fishing with Waterville Boats and his gillie at [email protected].

Bob White’s grilse

Now we stay on the Northshore and go up to the Bungalow, Currane anglers Mr. John Burton and Mr. Mike Murphy from Co Clare, caught 7 Sea Trout while flyfishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  Wind NE veered N veered again NW followed by good cloud cover, on the Yellow rain warning yesterday no comment as of yet, will give the full facts tomorrow.

15/7/2023 Straight to the C&R Sea Trout department, we start at the Bungalow, Mr. John Burton and Mr. Mike Murphy from Co. Clare were in good form again today while fly fishing with their gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 6 Sea Trout, ranging from junior class up to 3 ½ lbs. Staying in the Sea Trout department one boat was out from the Southside, caught 4 trout, biggest 4lb between the black point and the rabbit island followed by a few brownies also and just for the record the same Currane fly angler had 9 juniors in Coffees bay yesterday and a few brown trout and yes I failed to report this in yesterday’s notes. 6 boats out today as they were manipulating their skills and sadly no Salmon reported. Now as promised on the flood that wasn’t, the reason I say this is because it was made quiet clear to me in an email that was sent to me yesterday and I quote:

‘Hi Vincent, I see your weather reports are going down Murphy’s road because there is big difference between 2mm and 15mm’.

Well, my response to that is, it was 8mm actually and in the words of the Great Gillie Mr. Jack O’Sullivan – there was enough rainfall to activate the Salmon as well as the angler! Wind NW light to fresh followed by good cloud cover and a few showers.

16/7/2023 Going by my WhatsApp I take it the Currane anglers had their green and gold Kerry GAA hats on as Kerry took on Derry and I can tell you the Currane anglers were screaming louder than their Currane reels and fair play to Kerry, even though Derry had Kerry on the run it wasn’t long before Kerry reeled Derry in and won the battle, now they have to win the final against Dublin. Now back to reality on the fishing even though as of yet I have nothing to report but watch this space because a few fishing story’s could be out there. Wind light to fresh followed by some heavy showers.

17/7/2023 The Kerry footballers may have reeled and netted in Derry footballers yesterday, sadly the Currane Kerry anglers didn’t reel in or net any Salmon or Sea Trout today going by the WhatsApp?  Wind was all over the place from WNW to the SW and variable and overcast. Now we head down Murphy’s road and yes you have it, there is a yellow warning for Kerry tonight and tomorrow, their forecasting 18.4mm of rainfall

18/7/203 The Currane anglers were all quiet on the Currane system today, so I’m of the opinion they had their Inny hats on, the amount of rain we got last night was 5.4mm, yes that’s nothing but one must remember that the mountain rainfall isn’t measured, all I can say there was a small flood. Wind light South Veered SW and Veered again into the NW and come evening veered again into the North, followed by bright weather and very warm.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Clean sweep for the Carrolls at Tullamore Junior match

On Tuesday 18th July, Tullamore and District angling club held the first of their annual junior angling competitions on the Grand Canal in Tullamore. The competitions run for four weeks and take place on Tuesday evenings.

Fifteen budding young anglers took to the canal bank for this first event and each of the angling enthusiasts fished under the watchful eye of senior club members, who were eager to offer tips and a helping hand whenever required.

Everyone had a great evening and lots of fish were caught and released safely back to the water. In the end, it was the little women who took all of the honours, with first, second and third places all going to the Carroll girls.

Results of the Tullamore and District Angling Club 1st Junior Canal Coarse Fishing Competition for 2023:

  • 1st place went to Muireann Carroll – age 6 – with 2lb 15oz
  • 2nd place went to Caoimhe Carroll – age 11 – with 1lb 6 oz

Dry-dropper setup with Piscari Fly

There’s a good chance your trout stream is running high and coloured right now, so it’s a good opportunity to get that tackle bag in order or tie up a few leaders for the fishing to come.

With that in mind, in the latest video on the Piscari Fly YouTube channel, Peter Driver has taken the time to explain how he sets up his leaders for his dry-dropper fishing. Those of you familiar with Peter’s work will know that he has a very scientific approach to all things leader – with lengths, materials, diameters, knots, additives and more – all under severe scrutiny when Peter is prepping for a fishing session.

As ever, Peter has some great tips for anglers looking looking for insight into how to catch more fish, while at the same time not over-complicating things! Peter has a wealth of great tuitional videos like this up on the Piscari Fly YouTube channel – so don’t forget to like, subscribe and share his work!

Owenmore fishing well in Kerry

Owenmore

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports on the latest from the Kerry gem:

The weather has been reasonably kind to us over the last week. We had 10 grisle and over 20 seatrout caught in the river. We have had a few seatrout on the lake the one day we were able to get out because of strong winds. We had a good flood last night and this morning so the river might fish on Sunday but definitely from Monday onwards. There are heavy showers forecast for the rest of the week and that will keep the river in good order.

Athy Anglers Charity Match – Saturday July 29th

Athy Anglers will be running a charity match in aid of Willow Community Counselling Services on Saturday 29th July. All proceeds from the entry fee to the match will be donated to Willow to support their vitally important community work.

If you can’t fish but would still like to support Willow, head on over to their GoFundMe @ https://gofund.me/853ef03a

We are trying to do what little we can to help them keep things running, and continuing to provide the crucial mental health support services we so often lack in Ireland.

For this match, we will have the entire stretch of our Grand Canal match stretch open, so 24 anglers can come and show their support!

Cast a Line for Autism

img

Through the hard work of Dorrie Gibbons and other anglers in ILFFA and around the island of Ireland Cast a Line for Autism is back again for 2023.

What originally started out as a significant birthday celebration has turned into an annual charity fishing event.

Having fished from an early age and having represented Ireland on 9 occasions at the International Ladies Fly Fishing Competitions competing against England, Scotland, and Wales and fishing in angling competitions across Ireland, Dorrie felt this would be a great opportunity for her angling friends to support a very worthy charity event.

img

The competition is run in a way where the angling competitors organise their own partners and they have a choice of lakes to fish wetfly or dapp on Lough Mask or Lough Corrib. All competing anglers must return to Lydon’s Lodge Hotel in Cong for the weigh-in that evening. There is also a raffle for the non-anglers to win some amazing prizes. Dorrie and the other organisers are hoping that they will have a good turnout this year and there will be plenty of support.

To date the ‘Cast A Line For Autism’ charity fishing competition has raised over €37,700 for charities related to children with special needs.

This year’s proceeds will be in aid of St. Anthony’s Special School, Castlebar.

The wetfly/dapping competition will be fished on 29 July from 11.00am to 6.00pm
