Royal Canal pike and perch action for Midlands Angling

Stunning perch from the Royal Canal

Mick ‘the Fish’ Flanagan of Midlands Angling & Shooting might spend much of his fishing time on the midland loughs these days, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots. This week, Mick took to the Royal Canal with his light spinning rod, some spinners and a selection of small paddle tail lures.

It was a soft day, but the fishing wasn’t hard for Mick, as he caught fish after fish – both perch and jack pike – until he lost count altogether. Mick reckons that the canal is stuffed with fish and, despite the stretches of floating weed making some of the fishing tricky, he had a magical day while fishing from dry land for a change.

Cod, pollack and a nice tope for Donegal Bay charter boats

Nice cod

Charter boats fishing in Donegal Bay reported good pollack and cad angling during the week. Anglers aboard the MV Fiona Tee operated by Killybegs Fishing Trips had plenty big pollack but also did well on the cod, while anglers fishing with Ewings Sea Angling Charters fishing out of Rosses Point also caught good numbers of big pollack.

Plenty big pollack about

Earlier in the week, Ewings Sea Angling Charters reported of a nice tope being caught.

Another nice tope for Brian on an evening run

Donegal rock mark produces some cracking pollack

Killybegs Mariners member Stefan Martin enjoyed some great pollack action during the week. Read his report below…
A super evening on Donegal Bay with a short window of tide after work and conditions just perfect it was a quick grab of the lure gear and set off along the shore for the mark.
Lacing up the 2/0 hook with the pink paddle tail and first cast I felt a jolt on the drop as it got swallowed on the drop and all he’ll broke loose as a big fish ran hard but managed to get it moving and another few hard tail swooshes drew line from the reel its just a matter of holding on and hoping the line doesn’t break. A fine shank of golden pollack came nicely to the waiting landing net and a quick measure on the mat it was 70cm and got it back in to catch another day.
Perfect conditions
Screaming reels brought this 70cm fish
Plenty of decent yet smaller fish with the best of the rest going mid 60cm before the take died off and it was time to relax and enjoy the sunset.
Last weekend the Mariners crew had a club boat trip which produced a total of 19 species with the winning score of 12 species for Daragh McGuinness on a day fishing different grounds of sand and reef fishing. Also a bit of drama as a club record size bin lid of a turbot was lost at the rail for Dessie O’Keeney…ah well always next time!

Ton and Frank from Holland who we reported on just over a week ago when they got off to a great start finished their holiday the same way it started. Ton has stayed at Melview Fishing Lodge before but for Frank it was his first time to visit Ireland to fish.

Both the feeder and the pole produced some cracking catches with the last being 180lb + of bream. The weather was testing them at times but they carried on regardless. A great week had by all and we hope to see them back in Ireland again soon. Thanks guys for your company it was a pleasure having you stay!

Reach for the stars with Eire Bass in Cork Harbour

Dr. Jacques Bronkhorst took some leave during the week to launch his boat for a bit of saltwater fly fishing. With the unpredictable weather it wasn’t possible to head out in a small boat so the Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan came to the rescue.

Heading into Cork harbour, the professional photographer Kevin Mc Loughlin took the spectacular black and white photo shown above of the two eager anglers. Confined to the harbour a few bass and pollock fell to the fly, nothing spectacular but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Dr. Jacques Bronkhorst and a fine pollock

The guide managed to hook a starfish on the fly, not an easy task and not a candidate for fish of the week! Kev did bring a pork pie for Jacques and Richie. By all accounts he does make exceedingly good pies!
