Savage trout from savage hit for Mick The Fish on Ree

Mick and his savage trout - Catch of the Week

Mick ‘The Fish’ Flanagan of Midlands Angling had a strange day fishing on Lough Ree this week. The going was really slow, with no takes at all, until one savage take nearly pulled the rod from its holder. One take brought one fish, with no more action for the day, but that’ll do when the fish is a 74cm trout weighing in a 9lbs 7oz – a savage looking fish from a savage take and a fish of a lifetime. This trout wins Mick Catch of the Week.

Mick and his savage trout

Mick had just returned the fish to the water when he had to head for the shore to escape the downpour that followed – the clouds rolled in, the wind whipped up and the heavens opened up on him.

Visiting anglers dominate at Enfield International Festival

Royal Enfield Coarse Angling Club held a two-day festival on the Royal Canal recently. The competition was held at two different venues, with anglers fishing the first day at Longwood, before heading to Blackshade for the second day.

Day one proved to be a bit of a struggle as anglers found it hard to entice the fish, and at the end of the day, Jimmy Kelly was just out in front, followed closely by Sid Baldock.

A nice bream for Sid Baldock

The move to Blackshade on day 2 saw a good improvement in the fishing, and Niall Sutton had the best bag of the day. But Sid Baldock from Leigh in the UK was the most consistent angler over the two days and he walked away with the Progressive Genetics perpetual cup along with Fred Moss Memorial cup. Dave Walmsley was second followed by Niall Sutton in third.

Anglers getting good bass fishing in Kerry

bass

John Quinlan reports on the bass fishing around Ballinaskelligs Bay…

A 73cms bass for Stuart was the best of the bunch recently. Bass fishing over the last few weeks is still pretty good. Also plenty mullet, pollock and a big cod.

Sea angling around the Ring of Kerry

Late Night Delight for South Shore SAC

South Shore Sea Angling Club fished the latest round of their master angler series last week. The venue had to be changed as the original venue of Kilcoole was badly weeded up, so they headed to Murrough Beach in Wicklow instead. With the competition kicking off at 8pm and rods in at 1am, it was going to be a late one, and some fishing into darkness was on the cards.

Small Ray were a feature on the night

It proved to be a wise decision, as, from the first cast, anglers were into fish. At this time of year it’s a long-range venue, as anglers aim to target dogs at distance. Luckily, the dogs were there in decent numbers, and there were a fair few ray in the mix as well.

Gurnard also featured in catches

Overall, 333 fish were caught on the night by the 26 anglers (including three juniors) and Eamonn Bermingham came out on top, winning Zone A with 26 fish. Aaron Willet won the junior section with a creditable nine fish, including his first-ever ray. For a full report, see South Shore SAC Facebook page.

A 1am finish meant fishing well into the dark

Water in the Deel and Maigue, nice trout too

river deel

Angling guide Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling reports from the Maigue and Deel rivers in Co. Limerick…

Guided Dr Robin Beran from Ohio out of Adare Manor on 21 June. We fished the Deel at Newbridge and the Maigue at Adare, both running strong and tinged but fishable.

Robin had a number of hits at Newbridge before connecting with a beautifully conditioned brown, missed a couple of more good fish.

Adare was choked with traffic as usual and Robin had a small trout before latching on to a good 1lb+ fish, alas the strong current aided his escape.

Good to have a day without thunder and lightning, I cancelled a couple of bookings because of it, safety first!

West Cork and District fish Garrylucas, flats, bass, conger and more caught

Garrylucas

West Cork and District report on their latest outing…

WCADSAC were back in action on Saturday night, venue this time Garrylucas Beach, tucked to the western side of the Old Head of Kinsale. A popular beach for all manner of activities and getting busier by the year so we had a late enough start at 9pm in order to avoid impinging on folks enjoying the beach in the recent fine spell of weather. After weeks of easterlies on the morning in question the wind swung to the South and managed to put a reasonable roll on the beach. Not for long enough to bring fish in but still, it was better than fishing into a pond.

The Fishing itself wasn’t brilliant and it was anything but peaceful, there was a gig happening in close proximity and maybe the Cork fish aren’t massively fond of the Reggae and Ska themed barrage they were being subjected to! 20 anglers fished on the night with a return of 36 fish, a mixture of small Bass, Flounder and Dogfish but with the occasional surprise. Terry O’Donovan landed a Huss, a cert on any other night to take the longest roundfish pool but bumped out of that as Sod landed a strap conger. JP had a Plaice midst his bag of fish and Liam Davis managed somehow to catch a small thick lipped Mullet in the dark.

bass

JP finished way out on his own in first with 9 fish for the Senior section with Liam Davis managing 3 bass and his rogue mullet to take the junior section.

Rain hits Kerry but not Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

16/6/2023 The Currane anglers were as quiet as the Lambs and considering the water levels that’s not surprising. Wind SE and veered SSW light to fresh followed by good cloud cover.

17/6/2021 Straight to the Bungalow, UK Currane Angler Mr. Peter Brown while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 5 lbs. Grilse/Salmon on the troll. Now to the weather, the flood that missed the Waterville Fishery? All I can say the same couldn’t be said in Tralee and for good reason, there was a mighty thunderstorm followed by a massive downfall that flooded parts of Tralee in minutes today, sadly so far the Waterville Fishery is still on the dry side but as we all know in theses thundery conditions that can change in minutes, only time will tell. Wind light SSE veered Southwest.

18/6/2023 All quiet on the Wild Atlantic Salmon front, the same couldn’t be said for the thunder and lightning followed by downfalls, how much rain fell we will have to wait until tomorrow, personally if there was a good amount of rainfall sadly the land will take most of it but just for the record the amount of rainfall yesterday was 0.4mm. Maximum wind speed 14 mph from the South.

19/6/2023 Well the Currane anglers are still waiting for their rise in the water levels as well as a good rise in the Salmon and Sea Trout department and talking of water levels, amount of rainfall recorded at Valentia observatory was 32.2 mm but as you can see by today’s photos out on the lake, it tells you the story and that’s no bull. Wind S and veered SSW light with reasonable cloud cover and followed by the odd shower.

Currane rainbow

20/6/2023 Straight to the flood topic and yes, the Currane anglers are still waiting for the elusive flood, you can say the rain is more elusive than the Salmon at this present time. Wind SW light and variable followed my reasonable cloud cover. As you can see by the photos, this report isn’t propaganda.

21/6/2023 As they say there is always a silver lining and today was a perfict example and no it has nothing to do with fishing, mind you, you could catch a fish with it. So, let’s give Waterville’s Olympian Ryan Griffin a Big Congratulations for winning the Silver medal in the Javelin for Kerry and Ireland in the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin today and not forgetting his fellow athletes. Now to the Currane anglers it was all quiet on this Silver Medal day so as you can see the Sun was shining. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 15.6mm.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Rain at last for Kerry’s Owenmore

Owenmore upper lakes

Frank Maunsell reports from the Owenmore Fishery in Kerry, where badly needed rain has finally fallen…

It finally looks as if our drought is coming to an end. We had one small flood in mid April but not a drop of rain since. There is misty rain forecast for Thursday Friday and Saturday and there is heavy rain forecast for Sunday and Monday with wet weather until the following Friday.

With a bit of luck we should be fishing Monday onwards.
