Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…
16/6/2023 The Currane anglers were as quiet as the Lambs and considering the water levels that’s not surprising. Wind SE and veered SSW light to fresh followed by good cloud cover.
17/6/2021 Straight to the Bungalow, UK Currane Angler Mr. Peter Brown while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 5 lbs. Grilse/Salmon on the troll. Now to the weather, the flood that missed the Waterville Fishery? All I can say the same couldn’t be said in Tralee and for good reason, there was a mighty thunderstorm followed by a massive downfall that flooded parts of Tralee in minutes today, sadly so far the Waterville Fishery is still on the dry side but as we all know in theses thundery conditions that can change in minutes, only time will tell. Wind light SSE veered Southwest.
18/6/2023 All quiet on the Wild Atlantic Salmon front, the same couldn’t be said for the thunder and lightning followed by downfalls, how much rain fell we will have to wait until tomorrow, personally if there was a good amount of rainfall sadly the land will take most of it but just for the record the amount of rainfall yesterday was 0.4mm. Maximum wind speed 14 mph from the South.
19/6/2023 Well the Currane anglers are still waiting for their rise in the water levels as well as a good rise in the Salmon and Sea Trout department and talking of water levels, amount of rainfall recorded at Valentia observatory was 32.2 mm but as you can see by today’s photos out on the lake, it tells you the story and that’s no bull. Wind S and veered SSW light with reasonable cloud cover and followed by the odd shower.

20/6/2023 Straight to the flood topic and yes, the Currane anglers are still waiting for the elusive flood, you can say the rain is more elusive than the Salmon at this present time. Wind SW light and variable followed my reasonable cloud cover. As you can see by the photos, this report isn’t propaganda.
21/6/2023 As they say there is always a silver lining and today was a perfict example and no it has nothing to do with fishing, mind you, you could catch a fish with it. So, let’s give Waterville’s Olympian Ryan Griffin a Big Congratulations for winning the Silver medal in the Javelin for Kerry and Ireland in the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin today and not forgetting his fellow athletes. Now to the Currane anglers it was all quiet on this Silver Medal day so as you can see the Sun was shining. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 15.6mm.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only
Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.
The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-
- the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
- the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
- the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay
FLEKSI
A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks
