Keith Clarke, charter skipper of Fiona Tee of Killybegs Fishing Trips reports on a good mix of fishing on Donegal Bay. At the weekend his anglers enjoyed good fishing for ling and pollack under the Slieve League cliffs. This was followed up by some incredible tuna action on Sunday when Keith reckons he never saw such a feeding frenzy in the bay. They finished the day with 5 hook ups and only got 2 fish to boat. But 2 very big fish, the first was 98″ over 600lb, and the 2nd was 94″ a 540lb fish. They finished the day when Peter took on the epic battle on the stand up gear, but after a good 45 minutes the battle ended in heart break when the rod broke and the fish was lost.

Sunday was a very big day for anglers onboard Deep Blue of Tuna.ie too. After a slow start in the morning when Adrian Molloy’s anglers had a number of strikes without a hook-up, things improved dramatically. As the day went on the hook up rate got better and better and they finished with six tuna to the boat. The biggest bluefin was close to or just over 400 lb. Adrian kept the ball rolling and on Monday he had five BFT to the boat. The smallest fish around 200 lb’s and the biggest over 400 lb’s. Tuesday was another good day where three fine tuna were caught by Phil and Geoff. The smallest was around 350lb, then one of 500lb and the third a very hard fighting, fiesty fish close to 400lb.
All tagged and released as part of Ireland’s Tuna Chart Program.

Stefan Martin reports for the Killybegs Mariners on the 4th round of their winter league…
Blessed with the weather once again for the 4th league outing on Rossnowlagh but arriving at the beach with gentle easterlies and no surf told it was going to be difficult fishing and so it proved.
Huge banks of weed sat on the High tide line but thankfully the water was clean to fish but crabs were out in force attacking the baits under the starry sky above the 18 anglers taking part.
Cormac landed a nice double of flounders
A rampant first hour for Cara Boyle saw him with 6 counting flounder to 33cm with everyone else getting one or two smaller fish and the longer casts finding dogs.
A total of 6 different species were caught including pouting, whiting, dogs, turbot, flounder and coley.
Longest flattie prize of €50 was won by Johnny Byrne with a 32cm flounder.
2nd overall with 192pts flounders and dogs for €50 was won by Pat Cunningham.

The 2022 salmon and trout season has come to a close and so, for this episode of Ireland on the Fly, Daire and Tom are doing a review of the brown trout lakes around the country to find out how the fishing has been, what the conditions were like and, most importantly, what the catch numbers were on the different waters.

At last the mackerel have come inshore around Galway! Over the last week, high tides have produced excellent numbers of mackerel, as the shoals chase vast numbers of sprat into the shallows. Anglers have been out in numbers, and the docks area, Nimmo’s Pier and the prom in Salthill have all been busy the last few afternoons/evenings as the tide flowed in. It’s been great to see families and youngsters enjoying the bounty, and I heard plenty of laughter and banter over the past couple of evenings fishing.
Mackerel caught on a chartreuse Jig at distance
While mackerel are a great eating fish, they are also great bait for other species, and sea anglers have also been out stocking up on bait supplies for the next few months. While the mackerel fishing is a very seasonal catch, there are other species available through the winter and the rest of the year. That rod you bought to catch mackerel will also catch other fish, so why not broaden your horizons and try some beach or pier fishing for a number of other species?
The local sea angling club, Galway Bay SAC is holding a few evening fishing sessions for members over the next few weeks. These are an ideal opportunity to meet members and see what the club is about, pick up a few tips and maybe get into more than a few mackerel. The club welcomes new members and is very active, holding outings and competitions throughout the year. The first evening session is on Silverstrand beach this Sunday, 30th of October at 7pm. New members welcome, and with the dark evenings a head torch is required!

Pete Davis reports on the Munster Open Gold Shore, hosted by West Cork and District SAC on the Slob Bank, Youghal…
A hastily arranged but eagerly anticipated and well supported competition took place on the afternoon of Saturday 22 October with the return of the Munster Open Gold competition. There has been an awful lot happen in the world since the last time this match was run back in 2019 but it was great to see this competition back on the agenda.
The Slob Bank in Youghal was selected, Munster wouldn’t be known for daytime venues suitable for a large turnout but this one is a relatively safe bet on a reasonable tide.
The Slob Bank, Youghal
Sitting at the mouth of the Blackwater, where it empties into Youghal bay, its an interesting venue that can throw up a surprising variety of species on its day. Best known for large flounder throughout the year, small roundfish with the possibility of decent codling in the winter and always the chance of a bass. Its not particularly affected weather wise and even with the Blackwater running at 3m over its normal summer level on the day the fishing was in general excellent. Given the weather we had in the lead up to this match it was a great choice of venue with the preceding storms having no effect.
2019 winner JP Molloy with another double shot en route to a zone win.
Given the dire weather during the week, the short notice and another major open being held in Waterford the day after it was a great turnout with 38 anglers fishing on the day.
33 seniors and 5 juniors took part and there was a lively atmosphere in pleasant conditions as the clock hit 12.30 and the first cast were made. The weather through the middle part of the match turned nasty with an hour or so of monsoon like rain to contend with but whilst it may have made marking fish a little trickier it didn’t put a dampener on anything catch wise! There were good bags of fish from all along the bank, interesting as with the spacing we were spread out over a good half mile of it. Munster stalwarts Aidan O’Halloran and JP Molloy at differing ends were bagging up. JP with a wide variety of species… Gurnard, Coalfish, Weaver, Bass, Codling, Flounder and Whiting. Aidan O’Halloran was bagging up predominantly on small round fish. Jason Convery and Mark Gargan were in the hunt in Zone B along with Aidan with Jordan Muir giving chase to JP in Zone A.
Here’s Sully with a decent flounder
There were some decent fish caught on the day with some lovely flounder to 39cm along with a bass of 54 cm for JP. The fish count for the day was 352 fish shared between 38 anglers. That’s great fishing for a daytime match in Munster! It did mean counting some of the waterlogged score cards took a while but that’s a happy problem to have!
Come the end of proceedings it was Aidan O’Halloran who took the gold medal with a fine bag of 27 fish for 716 points.
A fine bass from the selfie king
JP Molloy followed in second for Silver with 25 fish for 617 points and Jason Convery in the Bronze medal slot with 24 fish for 573 points. The junior section was equally hard fought with very little separating them, the top 3 all had 7 fish apiece with Kevin Roche nicking it with Max Roche and Mochara Fraher following in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Zone winners (excluding Overall winner) were JP Molloy in Zone A and Jason Convery in zone B. The longest fish pools were substantial with €180 apiece for the longest flatfish and roundfish prizes. The longest flat was shared by Darren Ryan and Mark O’Sullivan with the longest roundfish won by JP Molloy with a bass of 54cm.
Munster Open Champion, Aidan O’Halloran, great fishing on the day to win by a stretch.
On the whole it was an excellent contest that ran seamlessly. Many thanks to all who participated to this, to all who travelled and hearty congratulations to all our winners, particularly Aidan and Kevin. The Munster closed gold medal will follow in a couple of weeks, if yesterday was anything to go by those Munster team places will be hard fought!

We sometimes like to think that years of angling experience will pay off when it comes to the numbers/size of fish we might catch. But I suppose one of the beauties of angling is that anyone can have their moment, or, as an angling friend of mine likes to put it, ‘every dog has his day…’ Such was the way of the world last Sunday, as 31 members of Newbridge District Pike Anglers took to the water for their McCabe cup competition. Many of those anglers were experienced guys, used to slogging it out over long hard days at the waters edge. One angler was a complete newbie, trying out pike fishing for the first time. You can guess how this one is going to end…
So Glenn Keegan, on his first ever day pike angling, landed a 20lb 7oz pike from a river venue (making it a specimen-sized pike) to romp home with the prize, leaving all other competitors stranded in his wake. Such is the camaraderie at these events, his fellow club members were delighted to see a newcomer take the top prize and quick to congratulate him, and I’m sure Glen will be a feature on their competition scene for years to come. Well done Glenn!
