Young angler smashes PB pike, fishing with Anglersparadise

Padraig's pike

Damien Culliney of Anglersparadise reports on a recent fishing trip with a young angler:

I young Padraig out will his dad John over the weekend. Padraig is a young and very enthusiastic pike fisherman. He is used to catching jacks in the Liffey, ranging between 50 to 60 cm, and he was very keen to try and better this by catching some quality Co. Clare pike. So we decided to start the day by targeting some larger fish, and before an hour had passed, he had already smashed his PB with a 98cm pike. Needless to say, he was delighted with that result. But there was much better to come, as we persisted fishing and we ended up with 7 takes, and 4 over the magic 100cm mark. In the end, Padraig ended up with a new PB, a magnificent 108cm fish, well done Padraig some fantastic fishing 👍👌💪🎣

Wet, windy and not many tout to finish the season on Lough Currane

Rain swamped boats on a flooded Lough Currane back in 2016. Photo courtesy of John Quinlan, Thatch Coattage

Vincent Appleby reports from Waterville…

7/10/2022 No reports of any rod benders at this present time, so we head for the weather, wind WNW fresh, average speed 20 mph, gusts up to 30 mph followed by reasonable cloud cover.

8/10/2022 The Currane drifters were all quiet this day, but I can say with out any fear of contradiction there was a great discussion/comments on Inland Fisheries Ireland Facebook page   well worth reading and have your say. Wind SW veered SSW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

9/10/2022 Made a good flood today as the rain lashed down and followed by a strong and variable wind from SW, speed was 30 mph with gusts up to 41 mph, eventually wind veered NNW light to fresh. Just for the record I didn’t get any reports from the lake and in my opinion, you could forget it right up to lunchtime.

10/10/2022 Update on the last two day’s and for good reason, I poached it off What’s on Waterville Facebook page so a big thanks to What’s on in Waterville and to Currane Angler Mr. Brian O’Rorke so take it away Brian, “Went home this morning, disappointed with yesterday, but had a fairly good day on Friday with 2 nice sea trout on a private lake on the upper Currane lakes’ system!! Good bye Lough Currane till next summer thanx to Lakelands guest house, The Lobster Bar and The Villa Maria, The Shy Man and Frank Donnelly and our private lake owner S.H!! We’ll meet again…   !”.

Now back today. Have no reports on today’s manipulations as of yet, but with any luck we might have an update? Amount of rainfall yesterday was 25.8 mm. Today’s wind was from the North and light and veered NNW later during the day.

11/10/20 Currane anglers were all quiet this day. Wind SSW light to fresh and overcast. Now we head for A Currane anglers view of one of his best series of trips in 30 years! Take it away Brian It’s all yours.

I’ve been coming to Waterville for 30 odd years,
To remember detail of trips – I have fears!
It’s tough for me, and my peers at our age!
It’s Lough Currane’s fish, we’d come and try to engage!
For me this year’s experience, has been one of the best!
But only really when, the wind was in the west!

A Skelligs trip was planned for May as a test,
The storm so bad that we gave it a rest!!
The lake was so rough, we shoulda given drifting a miss,
From sheltered shore I gave, 2 brown trout a kiss!
On the pan they went for breakfast next morn,
In butter they fried and eaten with corn!!

In June we arrived back, in the hope of salmon to tote,
The Shy Man put up a Hairy Mary, and a Silver Stoat!
The latter hooked two – three n four pound sea trout,
The former took a nice grilse, from the Commeragh spout!!

Next trip in September just two of us came,
An upper Currane lake we fished with The Shy Man, again,
Another salmon I caught, on a Muddler at last,
My partner hooked one, but broke his hook, on the same cast!!!
The last hoorah was mixed, as the fish were so dark,
But that upper lake, again, gave me a morning’s lark!!
The Shy Man on the oars, was my main man,
We released two sea trout that woulda, been fit for the pan!!

So many thanx again to the inimitable Shy Man, no doubt!
To Tommy Shea and Frank Donnelly for taking me out!
To Lakelands Guesthouse, for four wonderful stays,
To The Lobster Bar and The Villa Marie, for their dining arrays!!!

Thank you, Waterville, – see you next year, please God!

Brian O’Rorke.

12/10/2022 There were five boats out manipulating their skills on this the last day of the 2022 Season and by all accounts their lines were slack so on that note we head for some news from the IFI, on behalf of all the angling community and all of Ireland we would like to wish Dr. Paddy Gargan who has now retired from Inland Fisheries Ireland, a very happy retirement and tightlines. Dr. Paddy Gargan as well as being a renowned scientist he’s also a renowned Game angler in his own weight. In 1987, Paddy caught a lovely specimen salmon of 22lb from the Galway Weir on the shrimp fly.  Later that same year he landed a specimen Sea Trout of 8lb 9oz on a wet fly on the famous Connemara Lough Glenicmurrin which is part of the Costello system. All I can say is Dr. Paddy Gargan is that your retirement is a great loss to the Irish fishing community. Happy retirement from all anglers from all over the World especially from the Waterville Fishery.

As I have being saying for the last twenty years it’s that time of year again and yes you have it, first of all I would like to say a big thank you, to you the readers of the Blog and especially Mr. Myles Kelly and all the team in the Inland Fishery Ireland for their great support as always, this season. Also, a big thank you to Mr. Paul Burke of the Trout and Salmon, who has the hard work of editing my reports every month, all I can say is Paul has the patience of a Saint. So on that note I can’t wait for the 2023 Season, Happy Christmas to you all and stay safe and I’m looking forward to January 17th 2023 and writing On The No Spin No Fly’s just Facts Zone.

Butzelhaeschen wins the 21st Lough Allua Pike Challenge

Lough Allua

Greg Latour of Tir na Spideog reports on the 21st Lough Allua Pike Challenge which took place on Lough Allua on the 8th of October…

On a sunny and calm day, 18 anglers set out in 7 boats to fish this one day event. The Lough Alua Pike Challenge is 22 years old – organized and sponsored each year by the Tir na Spideoga Fishing Lodge.

21st Lough Allua Pike Challenge

Conditions were near perfect while water levels were a bit high. A good number of decent pike were caught, measured, weighed and released unharmed.

The longest pike, measuring 102cm, was caught by a German angler – Mr. Michael Frings. This secured him a bronze fishing trophy . Michael aka “Butzelhaeschen”, is the only competitor beside the organizer to have fished all Challenges down through the years. So it was no surprise that he scooped up the first prize for the heaviest bag as well, as the  102cm pike tipped the scale at 6,3kg, beating the 2nd highest overall weight from Latvian angler Andis Vilmanis by a 100g.

pike lough allua
The 102cm and 6.3kg winning pike caught by Michael Frings aka “Butzelhaeschen”

The best boat crew prize went to German angler Philip Breuer from Aachen and myself with a total of 5 pike in the boat.

Of course there had to be a loser’s prize and as Lithuanian angler Aidas Jurgilas managed to blank the 2nd year in the row, he had to accept the wooden spoon – a magnetic fishing game, in order to improve his skills for the 22nd LAPC taking place in October 2023.

To round off a great day on the water our competitors from Ireland, UK, Germany, Hungary, Lithunnia, Latvia and Spain gathered around the BBQ at the Lodge till the early hours.

Some nice fish have been caught, mostly pollack and some cod. John is hoping for a break in the weather to get some more fishing in, particularly bluefin tuna if they are about.

Irish Angling Update 7 October 2022

After a long dry summer, the end of September saw heavy rain and wind, and blustery conditions with heavy showers continued into this week. Although conditions impacted on angling, particularly sea angling, we still have some great reports from around the country.

Silver Sunset

The salmon season came to an end last Friday, and we have some end-of season reports to bring you. A reasonable September capped off a disappointing, drought-impacted season on the Erriff. Jason Nash reports on a really good season on the Bandon, at least up to the warm dry weather in July. The sea trout season continues on Lough Currane for another few days, while good fishing was reported on the Inny towards the end of the season there. The last week of September also provided good sport on the Blackwater, and anglers on the Moy also saw an improvement last week.

11-year-old Matthew Brinklow shows dad how to do it. Well done young man!

To The Salt

Bluefin tuna season is still in full swing, with good fishing reported from Baltimore and Courtmacsherry in west Cork, although the weather is making it difficult. Tuna boats also reported a good start to October in Donegal Bay, in spite of the wind.

Charter boats reported good mixed species fishing along the west coast, with a group from Howth SAC enjoying good sport in Galway. Further south, anglers in Clare made the most of weather windows to get plenty of species on the board. The shore angling competition scene is also active, with Tim O’Sullivan from Galway Bay SAC taking top honours in the All-Ireland Open Shore and winning the prestigious Jimmy Smith trophy, where Liam Davis triumphed in the junior section.

Flounder fishing was prolific in Morriscastle, where Eamon Bermingham made a late run up the leaderboard to win the South Shore competition. And finally, John Cunningham enjoyed superb wrasse fishing at a Donegal mark, landing 4 specimen fish, including our Catch of the Week, a fine ballan wrasse of 48cm.

Catch of the Week

Festival Season

The coarse angling festival scene is also in full swing. Cootehill Angling Festival celebrated its 40th year with competitors landing some very good bags. A great catch of 84lbs of roach put Paul Hallen in contention for the overall prize in Portumna, but he was pipped for first place by local angler Arunas Miecka. Ray Linton enjoyed a good day with the pole to take the first leg of the Munster Anglers winter league. The festival season is not up yet with more to come from Inniscarra Lake and Bann Festivals – check out the calendar at https://bit.ly/upcomingfest for details.

Paul Hallen

Toothy Critters

Pike angling is again picking up, with cooler weather and water temperatures more suitable now. A visiting father and son duo from Germany enjoyed superb sport in the Boyle area, with fish up to 110cm testing their skills.

Jonas from Germany with his new pike PB of 110cm

Limerick Pike Anglers enjoyed good sport on a visit to Galway, with a catch of 23lbs topping the prizes, with 52 pike landed in total. A couple of visitors from Minnesota had good sport with local guide Damien Culliney in Clare, with pike to over 1m and some nice perch. And perch were a great reward for young Luke MacGabhann who fished Templehouse Lake in tough conditions.

Luke must have used his ‘Spidey Sense’ to hone in on the perch

Reminders

Salmon anglers are reminded that now the season is over, salmon logbooks must be returned along with unused gill tags by October 19th. Check out our post here on how to return yours.

We would like to ask all specimen hunters to get their 2022 claims into the Irish Specimen Fish Committee as soon as possible before the end of October close-off.

Podcasts And Videos

The Ireland On The Fly podcast returns with an interview with streamer expert Keith McDonnell, who landed a fantastic 22lbs sea trout on a recent trip to Iceland.

And now that the season is over, Peter Driver from Piscari Fly is back with his popular Saturday night live flytying on his Facebook page here.

In case you missed it….US Prosecutors in Cleveland have opened an investigation into an apparent cheating scandal at a Lake Erie angling tournament. Drivetime on RTÉ Radio One spoke with Des Chew of Inland Fisheries Ireland on Tuesday to discuss how competitions are run differently here in Ireland. You can listen back to Des chatting with RTE’s Cormac O’ hEadhra here – rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22153364/

What’s On TV

Viewers in Ireland may want to tune into Nationwide on RTE One at 7pm this evening, as the programme features the Galway Fishery. Filmed earlier in the year, the piece looks at the history of the fishery and some of the research work that is carried out on salmon and eels there, as well the angling of course.

And next week sees the final episode in the current BBC series of Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. Comedians Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer visited Ireland back in May and enjoyed some mayfly fishing on Lough Corrib, as well as trying for bream on a nearby lake. Tune in to see how they got on. BBC 2, Friday 14th October at 9pm.

And now the weather

Sunny spells and scattered showers today, heavy and thundery at times and becoming isolated towards evening. Feeling cold with fresh and gusty W/SW winds, and afternoon temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.  Mainly dry and sunny for much of Saturday, becoming cloudier later in the day. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with a light to moderate south to southwest wind, freshening along west coasts towards evening and bringing wave overtopping on western and northwestern coasts.

Wet and breezy as rain moves eastwards across the country on Sunday, with drier and clearer conditions in the northwest by evening. Highest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees with moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds, veering westerly.

The outlook is for changeable weather with dry periods for the start of the week. Monday and Tuesday will be mostly dry with the odd shower, and light to moderate westerlies. Becoming unsettled thereafter with spells of wet and breezy weather.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland. If you’re heading to the coast, don’t forget to check the tides.

      tuna

Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters reports some super shark fishing aboard the Silver Dawn.

30 September: The weather is playing havoc with our plans to target the large Bluefin Tuna off the West Cork Coast but we still managed to tag 3 very large fish this week between 575 and 690lb in weight.

      bluefin tuna
      Graham Flynn with a bluefin

We have frustratingly also had a few fish drop the hook and saw much bigger Bluefin approaching our lures.

It’s been some great craic when we have been able to get out but time on these fish is limited and the weather is still not forecast to give us good conditions to target them.

02 October: A great day to be at sea today. Our angler Jomi flew in from Zurich yesterday to try Bluefin Tuna fishing off West Cork. Within 15 minutes of getting our lines out he was into a large fish that dropped the hook at the boat before we could tag it.

The sea was alive with Whales and Dolphins and wherever we fished, giant Fin Whales were surfacing for miles around us. Along with Minke and Humpbacks it was an amazing display of what our waters has to offer at times.

Jomi was here for Bluefin though and did manage to get 2 fine fish of 450 and 600lb alongside for tagging.

      tuna
Jomi and Dan with a bluefin tuna

Weather means his second day with us is cancelled but he has some incredible memories to take back to Zurich with him on Tuesday. No matter how many Bluefin you get, the excitement of the take never fades.

Dan also had his first day crewing for Bluefin and passed with flying colours

05 October: We should be out looking for Bluefin but the weather has deteriorated at the worst possible time just as our season was kicking off.

While I was sulking I looked through some of our catches so far in 2022 and realised we have had 4 different species well past the 100lb mark. We’ll have to go some to better that in 2023 but the elusive Mako and Thresher are a possibility and there’s a few sixgill out there if weightlifting is your thing.

Here’s hoping for a settled spell before the tuna have gone.

Bluefin season going well in Baltimore, satellite tagging and all

Kieran Collins of Baltimore Angling reports on how his bluefin tuna season is going…

30 September: We had the Marine Institute out Wednesday and Thursday looking to put satellite tags on some Bluefin Tuna to gain invaluable scientific data. We hooked 2 fish on Wednesday, getting one Tagged. Thursday we tagged 3 more fish. All fish swam off strong after being tagged. Delighted to play a part.

02 October: Today was day 5 for us on Bluefin Tuna this season and while it started off slow it came to life with plenty of feeding action around lunchtime. We ended up with 5 hook-ups and 4 fish tagged ranging from 390lb to 545lb. The weather is going to keep us in for a few days again.
