Good charter fishing out of Killybegs

Good fishing is reported from charter boats in the Killybegs area. Mackerel have been plentiful this year, providing plenty of bait (and eating!). Aboard the Fiona Tee, fishing was reported as not plentiful, but brilliant quality, with some big fish around.

A small run of salmon on the Bandon sees a few fish caught

There was no rain last week and angling activity for the weekend 15 May was at a minimum as a result. There were a few opportunities in low water as a few fish are coming into the lower reaches.  There were 3 salmon reported for the week.

Clouds of fly and water just right on the Nore

Dan O’Neill, fishery manager at Mount Juliet, reports on the Nore:

Water levels are now just right for trout fishing along the fishery. I was lucky enough to be guiding over the weekend which allowed me to not only enjoy the weather but witness the wonderful fly hatches. Clouds of flies swarmed above the river with the odd mayfly rising above the hustle and bustle of the crowded river surface. Dry fly was of interest to my guests this weekend and we had a great time with some wonderful trout. Small patterns worked best throughout the day down to a size 22. I did try dry dropper for a while using a size 22 dark PTN under an Olive pattern dry. Trout took both and the nymph was mostly taken on the drop. Fishing on the flat slow water was very exciting just above Georges Wall.

Trying some wet fly later on in the day produced some great takes also. Spider patterns worked well with winged wets taking a few fish later in the evening. A very productive weekend and looking forward to many more.

General Information

The river Nore is a beautiful river that meanders it way through counties Laois and Kilkenny before joining with its sister river the Barrow just upstream of New Ross on its way to the sea. The Nore gets a good run of Atlantic salmon and the river which is currently open for angling on a catch and release basis produced 563 salmon in 2015 and 599 salmon in 2016. Salmon fishing is available on a number of stretches including the Mount Juliet Fishery which is located just outside Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, approximately mid-way between Kilkenny City and New Ross.

Good hatches of Mayfly on Arrow with trout to 4lb reported

Jimmy Frazer, Lough Arrow Fish Preservation Association & District Angling Club, reports that the Lough Arrow annual Mayfly Competition was held on Sunday 15 May. Over 70 anglers entered. Good hatches of mayfly were seen with some spent going out. Competition was fished on the basis of heaviest fish over 14 inches.

11/5/2022 All the Game fishing action comes from Vincent’s Harbour and renowned all-round angler and Guide on the Waterville Fishery the one and only Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught and released a fine 4 lbs. Seatrout while trolling today. Now to the Spring Salmon and the Brown Tag saga ended on a stalemate today to the best of my knowledge and if I’m wrong, I can say without any fear of contradiction those Brown tag anglers failed miserably in their duties. Now joking apart as from tomorrow Waterville Fishery is back to where it should be with all rods firing, so come on down and let battle commence. Wind NW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover and followed by the odd shower.

12/5/2022 The Currane anglers were all quiet on all fronts this day in all departments. WSW light to fresh with good cloud cover followed by the odd shower.

13/5/2022 Renowned Currane fly angler Mr. Markus Kruse of Germany, while fishing with his Gillie, caught a fine 8lbs Salmon on the fly and for the rest of the Currane anglers they were all quiet on all fronts. Wind W light with good cloud cover.

14/5/2021 Straight to the action and great news to hear that the first Grilse was caught on the fly on the Southside of Lough Currane in Edere Bay by Local Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley, Bobs Grilse was in the 6 lbs. class and for the rest of Currane anglers they were all quiet on the SW front. Wind SW light and bright and sunny all day.

15/5/2022 The Currane anglers were all quiet this day in all departments. Wind SE light and variable, bright and sunny for most of the day.

16/5/2022 There was just the one boat out this day manipulating the Currane waters and what a cracker of a day for renowned all round Currane angler Mr. Andy Wishart from Northern Ireland and for good reason, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 3 Salmon all in the 9 to 10 lb class, two were caught on the troll and one on the fly, sportingly released two Salmon and finished their day off with a fine 2 lbs Sea Trout. Andy’s quote of the day, I can say the Lonesome boatman and I didn’t have a lonesome day in the Salmon or the Sea Trout department today and there’s no argument to that. Wind SSW and variable with reasonable cloud cover.

17/5/2022 We start in the number of boats out on the waters of Lough Currane today, there were two and that’s a fact and the other fact is that Northern Ireland and Currane angler Mr. Andy Wishart caught a fine 10 lbs Salmon on the fly, with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com again one can say that Andy and Dominic weren’t lonesome in the Salmon fly department. Now to the apology department, yesterday Mr. Andy Wishart sent a fine picture of his fine 10 lbs. Salmon which I failed miserably in my duties because I failed to put it up with the report, I Checked text and WhatsApp but failed to check my email. Wind SSW and veered South late in the afternoon with good cloud cover.

18/5/2022 The Currane anglers headed out on to the rough waters of Lough Currane and come lunch time they called it a day and headed for calmer waters like the high stool. Wind SSE wild, followed by heavy showers.

Anglers – Please Look Out For Tagged Shad

 Inland Fisheries Ireland led research on Twaite Shad in Irish Rivers has been ongoing for several years, particularly in the Rivers Barrow and Suir. Some shad were tagged by IFI in the River Barrow at St. Mullins in 2019 – anglers are asked to be vigilant and report any tagged shad they catch to IFI shad@fisheriesireland.ie . One tagged shad recapture was reported in 2021 but some may have been missed due to the tag not being seen. The tag will likely have a film of dark algae (or other microscopic plant) and may be difficult to see. Examples of tags from a tagged bass (a) with algae (b) ‘clean’ tag. Tagged under dorsal fin.

If you catch a tagged fish please clean the tag gently to expose tag number, and take a photo. Measure the fish (total length) and return fish with tag to the water.

Anglers catches have a role to play in monitoring of fish generally. As with all fish, but particularly shad in these catch and release fisheries, good handling is absolutely essential to ensure good survival. These fish need to be handled with great care and given sufficient time to recover.

Best practice handling for shad:

  • Angling methods: Please use barbless hooks (preferably single hook) to ensure easy release of fish. Minimizing fight time will benefit the fish. If you must remove a shad from the water please use a landing net (preferably rubberized mesh)
    • Unhooking: Ensure your hands are wet and avoid touching the gills, keep fish in the water or in a damp landing net as much as possible
    • Measuring your catch: Please ensure the measuring mat is sufficiently wet before measuring (preferably in a shaded area) and minimise measurement time
    • Returning your fish: Allow adequate time for fish to recover in the water. Hold in a landing net or gently by hand, facing an upstream direction into the flow (this ensures oxygen flows freely through the gills). When it is strong enough to swim away on its own gently release the fish.
    • Minimal handling is always encouraged with shad and always practice Catch and Release

Tommy Burke does well to win Edenderry angler’s Killeen competition

Edenderry Coarse Angling Club had 23 members fish their latest competition on Saturday at Killeen. After looking at the pegs with the sun up the organisers felt that it didn’t bode well for a good day but conditions were the same for everyone.

Sure enough, the fishing was hard but most anglers were getting bites. Top man on the day was Tommy Burke from the middle of the section.

Primary School Artists ‘reel in’ Top Prizes in National Competition

Students from Cork, Dublin and Laois claim the winning spots in the 2022 Something Fishy Poster Competition

Two young artists from Cork and Dublin have scooped the winning prizes in the 2022 ‘Something Fishy’ national poster competition, with a third student from Laois being awarded the ‘Special Judges Category’ prize.  The competition which is organised by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) in conjunction with Blackrock Education Centre received artistic entries from across the country.

Madelena Duggan, a sixth-class pupil from Ardfield National School in Clonakilty, Co. Cork and Emma Kilmurry, a fifth-class pupil from Sacred Heart School, Clondalkin, Co. Dublin each won in their category for their conservation-themed poster. While Katie O’Neill, a sixth-class pupil from Presentation Portarlington Primary School, Portarlington, Co. Laois won the ‘Special Judges Category’ prize.

Earlier this year, primary school students around the country were challenged by Inland Fisheries Ireland to create a poster with the ‘catch-photo-release’ (CPR) message that could be used in awareness campaigns.

The overall winners will receive a tablet to the value of €500 each and the winner of the ‘Special Judges Category’ will receive a tablet, to the value of €200.

The national poster competition is an important element of the wider ‘Something Fishy’ Educational Programme, aimed at primary school pupils aged between ten and thirteen. It educates students on the importance of biodiversity and on having sustainable habitats, fish and angling. Information about the programme is available from www.somethingfishy.ie.

Plenty of fish off the Clare coast

The first spurdog of the season, which means plenty more to come

The west Clare charter boats have been enjoying very good fishing for whitefish over recent weeks, whenever weather windows between the windy days allowed them to get out. Luke Aston, skipper of the Clare Dragoon, reports good numbers of mackerel, and a good size too, great to see so early in the season.

Last Saturday was a pet day on the water, with light winds and blue skies. Guests enjoyed good sport, with pollack, cod, coalies, whiting and the first spurdog of the season made an appearance.

Skipper Sean Maguire on the Lady Gwen also had a group out on Saturday, with the great weather providing an easy introduction to sea fishing for a group of novices. They caught plenty of pollack, coalies, nice sized whiting and also grey gurnard. I’m sure they will be back on board soon after such a great introduction.
