Mount Juliet’s lakes, a perfect playground for a young angler

Dan O’Neill, Fishery Manager at Mount Juliet reports from the lakes there…

To celebrate my son’s getting his summer holidays it was time for a fishing trip on the lakes. The weather was nice, warm and humid, so we tried for a tench in the margins. Groundbaiting lightly along a couple of different spots soon resulted in the unmistakable fizzy bubbles associated with our target species.

It wasn’t long before the float dipped and Anthony struck into his first tench that gave a great account of itself. To follow were some carp and plenty of Rudd with occasional very and very welcome gudgeon.

A great way to start the summer. Hopefully plenty of days like it for us all!

Great pike action from Royal Canal

Arkadiusz “FishHunter” Smakowski has sent in this report and movie of his best ever pike caught on the Royal Canal recently:

Very quiet morning with a few bites along the canal, but nothing serious – then I almost had a heart attack when a big pike jumped from the water when I was getting the lure from the water. Decided to try one more time, another attack, third cast and finally got it. It was exciting as I was using a very light setup – so I was nervous how it will end – but this time I was the winner.

Low water on the Nore but trout fishing still going well

fly casting on the Nore

Dan O’Neill, fishery manager at Mount Juliet is back again with more news from the Nore…

With the water levels now low and water temps staying warmer for longer during the day a trip with dry dropper was the obvious choice.  Accompanying me today was a friend of mine Alan who shares as much passion as I do for fly fishing.

River Nore

The beat of choice was at the top end of the fishery which only becomes fishable when the water runs below .40. The Klink pattern we decided to use was one given to me by a fellow angler – very simple but effective. Below the Klink we were using a iron blue nymph with a small bit of flash behind the 2mm bead.

Trout from the Nore

Selecting our position in the beat we began fishing. It wasn’t very long before Alan lifted into the first trout of the day which was followed by many more. We were very careful and precise on where we fished in the run and found the fish to be tight to the top of each run taking the nymph on the drop at times.

It was a pleasure to watch Alan fish the runs and even better was watching him play out the trout in such beautiful scenery.

fly casting on the Nore

We are in need of rain at the moment on the Nore as water levels are quite low now. Fish are still quite energetic and in amazing conditionand it always amazes me how each trout has such unique markings.

Rains see sea trout and salmon catches up on Owenmore

Owenmore upper lakes

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports that as the levels on the river came up on Sunday the fishing improved…

5th July 2021: I went up to the lake around 7am yesterday and there wasn’t a drop of water on the river and when I arrived back at the Bridge in the evening it was up about a foot. The seatrout were milling in the lower pools and a good number of grisle travelled up as well. A man started to fish below the bridge and he had 9 or 10 trout in about quarter of an hour. The sun came out then and that was the end of that. Two other men went up stream and they couldn’t get over the quality and the number of fish travelling. Even though the water had dropped a good bit today there were 3 grisle landed and A few more were long distance released.

There are approximately five miles of fly fishing along the main part of the Owenmore River in Kerry, with 33 named pools and an additional 180 acres of lake fishing in this Kerry beauty spot. The salmon, grilse and sea trout begin to run in April. The runs continue through spring and summer into early October.

Pollock and wrasse for the West Cork ‘yaks

David Norman of West Cork Bass had a most enjoyable morning afloat on the kayaks with Gearoid Muldowney recently. Having to fish tight inshore in a limited weather window restricted the opportunities and the normally reliable pollock were mobile and strangely hard to pin down. A patient approach along with forensic searching of the normal structures eventually paid off and the pollock finally came to the ‘yaks along with some stunning wrasse. The short spell of equally stunning weather made it all the more worthwhile.

Notes: Having intensively fished for Bass (Catch & Release) on the West Cork Coast plus all of the recognised Bass fishing counties of Ireland  I want to share with other like-minded anglers the thrills of responsible lure fishing for Bass on a One-to-One basis over a limited number of trips throughout the key times of the Bass fishing Year, which for me is June – Sept, sometimes earlier or later depending on how the weather is behaving…
I can offer a range of options around key tides, to include night fishing, in a safe and environmentally conscious manner including bespoke workshops to help build knowledge and confidence

Slow week on Conn & Cullin

Peter Roche released this 5 lbs. trout caught on Dry Mosley Mayfly in Victoria Bay

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

A very slow week on the lakes which is typical for this time of year. Most trout were caught on dry fly given the conditions. A party of 4 anglers from Cork had some challenging fishing in North Conn. Fishing around the islands produced 6 trout to the boat, the best weighing 2 lbs. All fish were caught on dry bumbles and hoppers. They had a few rises too with all trout released.

Father & son, Dick and Stephen Blake from Dublin had 4 trout in one day and a few rises, all to the Sunburst International Dabbler while they had a few more sizeable trout over the next few days. All fish were released, and the best weighed 1.5 lbs. They concentrated on Tolan’s Bay and around the River Deel area.

Stephen Blake from Dublin had a few trout on this fly, a Sunburst International Dabbler

In south Conn, Peter Roche had a good trout for 5 lbs. on a dry Mosley Mayfly in deep water off Victoria Bay, the best trout he ever had on the lough.
