Only a few sea trout reported last week from Currane

Salmon season finished with very high water all round. Angling on Currane continued for sea trout on a Catch and Release FLY ONLY basis. Conditions became difficult last week with the arrival of Storm Amy and just a few sea trout were reported. Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

A couple of great days charter boat fishing at Courtmacsherry with a good mix of species landed

Mark Gannon reports on the charterboat fishing with Courtmacsherry Angling Centre…

On the 27/28th Sept Philip and his angling buddies saw a welcome break in the weather and headed down to Courtmacsherry for a 2 day charter staying in the Coastal Cottages self catering, part of the Courtmacsherry hotel complex.

On the first day they fished in the bay where they caught Pollack, Cod, Bullhuss, dogfish, conger, Coalfish and mackerel. On the 2nd day they were a bit more adventurous and decided to head south for a days Sharking. Ronan their skipper on the Lady Patricia decided to try a wreck before starting a shark drift. Several good Ling were landed to 20 lbs, conger and, unusually for wreck fishing, 2 whopping skate one an Irish Specimen landed by John Mackey, also caught were stone bass and specimen whiting. Drifting for Shark produced fish near specimen weight.

On the inshore front great bass fishing with fish to 76cm landed all on live joeys.

Seven 1m plus pike, good perch and trout for Klaus & Klaus from Austria in Boyle

Our regular guests Klaus and Klaus from Austria had a good few days with us last week.
Three days fishing yielded 7 pike over the meter mark, a nice trout of 42cm just before season end and some chunky perch to 35cm. With three different species this was a perfect angling holiday for the two Austrians who can’t wait to be back next season.

Royal Enfield Winter League kicks off

This report from the Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation: 

Sunday saw the first of five planned outings of the Royal Enfield Winter League, all of which will be fished on the Royal Canal around Enfield. We had a decent turn out, so we fished two different venues with two sections in each.

Some lads fished the pole while others took to the whips. A mixture of roach, rudd and perch were weight in.

Unfortunately, the club has learned that the Royal Canal is due to be dammed up due to a leak on the Railway side which needs repairing – so we have lost one of our great match stretches for a while.

19lb, 81.5cm trout wins 2025 longest trout comp for Connacht Predator Anglers

The Connacht Predator Anglers have a ‘Longest Trout’ competition each year amongst their members. They have announced the winner of their 2025 competition and this was a massive 81.5cm, 19lb+ brown trout caught in May on Lough Corrib by Aidan Traynor – what a fish! Aidan spends a lot of time targeting ferox trout, with some fantastic results. This fish is certainly one of the fattest we’ve seen in our fishing reports!

Ballinlough – a great fly fishing venue for trout anglers during October

During the months of August and September a total of 67 anglers fished Ballinlough, which is a managed fishery and located near Westport in Co. Mayo. Throughout that period the fishery produced 64 trout with 47 being released.

The season on Ballinlough will remain open until the end of the month (31 October) and will provide great fly fishing opportunities for trout anglers in the West of Ireland.

Ballinlough Fishery

Ballinlough is a shallow, limestone lake of 22 hectares located 3.2km north of Westport and is managed by IFI. It is a rich lake with a marl bottom and has been stocked with rainbow trout and brown trout. The fish are known to be free rising, and are encouraged by hatches of olives, sedges and wind-blown terrestrials. Trout can be taken on traditional wet flies including Peter Ross, Bibio, Invicta to mention but a few. Streamer patterns such as the Minkie and nymphs can also work well. Dry flies, however, can also provide great sport particularly during evening times and during sedge hatches.

IFPAC hold pike qualifier in Clare

The Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs held their fourth qualifier last weekend on lakes in Clare over the weekend. As with most of the country, fishing was tough due to the sudden increase in water levels. Having said that, there was a superb  23lber landed by Pavel Skuza, enough to help him tie first place with Kevin Foley.

Results were as follows:

  • Jt 1st Kevin Foley 23lb 7oz, 8 fish.
  • Jt 1st Pavel Skuza 23lb 7oz. 1 fish.
  • 3rd Luke Kearns 20lb 8oz, 6 fish.
  • 4th David Quinlivan, 19lb 4oz, 9 fish.
  • 5th Eddie McGuirk, 17lb 13oz, 2 fish.

Final days of the 2025 salmon season saw some better catches on the Moy

Moy Catchment Angling Report 21st – 30th September 2025

Following a challenging season the final days of the season provided some good sport in some fisheries in the Moy system with a lot of fish reported as released. Water levels at Ballylahan receded this week from 1.05 m on Sunday 21st September down to 0.72 m by noon on Sunday 28th improving fishing somewhat for the final full week of the season. Weather wise the past week saw moderate to heavy rainfall especially towards the end of the week and wind gusts reaching 40-45km with daytime temperatures of 13 degrees Celsius to 17 degrees Celsius.

Ballina Salmon Anglers

Peter reports of sixty-six salmon caught of which seven were released for the final nine days of the season showing weights of 4 lbs to 7 lbs with all methods working well.

Mount Falcon Estate

Mike reports of thirty-seven salmon caught of which nineteen were released caught mostly on the fly with weights up to 8 lbs.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers

Kenneth reports of sixty-seven salmon caught of which fifty-four were released.

Attymass Angling Club

Kevin reports of sixty-six salmon caught of which fifty-nine were released all on the shrimp and prawn.

Coolcronan Fishery

Nick reports of twelve salmon caught with weights from 4 lbs to 8 lbs.

Byrnes Fishery

Roy reports of fifty-three salmon caught of which forty-four were released, caught on the prawn and spinner with a best weight of 12 lbs.

Armstrong Fishery

George reports of twelve salmon caught of which ten were released, caught mostly on the prawn with a best weight of 10 lbs.

Gannon’s Fishery

Pat reports of thirty-nine salmon caught of which fourteen were released all on the shrimp and prawn.

The Foxford Fishery

Granville reports of twelve salmon caught of which six were released, mainly spinning with the best weighing 12 lbs.

Foxford Salmon Anglers

Harry reports of seventy-two salmon caught of which fifty were released.

East Mayo Anglers Association

Kathleen reports of thirty-one salmon caught of which twenty-one were released using all methods with the best weighing 13lbs.

Leinster Shore League @ Kilgorman Strand

This report from South Shore SAC on the fourth round of the Leinster Shore League:

Storm Amy had passed over Ireland on Saturday leaving a trail of destruction behind her with gusts of 140kmh, albeit the Atlantic facing coasts took the brunt however! Big tides and stirred up sea provided much hope to Leinster’s finest, as they turned up for the fourth leg of the Leinster League and first in the winter series!

Pegged either side of the entrance in Kilgorman, hopes were high of a few flats & bass. First casts provided a fair few flats, odd schoolie & gurnard along the stretch. There was a definite lull after that initial flurry as the few resident fish were nabbed and sent back on their way.

Over low water, those venomous enemies of the bathers, The Lesser Weaver put in a pretty numerous appearances anywhere from 5 – 100 yards out, anglers made a good point that this really is indicative of warm water!

As the match progressed, two stalwarts of Irish Angling came to the fore with both Tommy & Noel Fogarty landing fine smooth hounds, and while many others tried for them – very few had success. In Zone A, Lar Mooney was picking off fish relatively consistently all day with a distance approach, a few gurnards were key to his score. Stevie Glynn was busy also consistently picking off fish at regular intervals.

In Zone B, young Eric Gasparro was having a right old ding-dong with Paul Tyndall that went down to the last cast, with Noel still hanging around threatening to spoil the party if another smoothie showed up. Top Junior Luke Kinsella also fished extremely strongly and would have been right in the reckoning for his Zone had he been in the comp proper. A superb performance from a very promising angler. Also to call out Evan Mason, back from an angling sabbatical, fished superbly and would have also challenged many seniors on the day.

In the final shakeup, Tommy Fogarty took both Zone A and the match out with a fantastic 89cm Smoothie to also take the round pool in the Zone. Lar Mooney was just edged out for the win but had to be pleased with 2nd. Stevie Glynn who is off on his travels shortly as Manager of the Women’s Ireland Team in the World Championships (you’re in good hands ladies) completed the framers with a third-place finish.

In Zone B, Eric took the win narrowly from Paul Tyndall with Noel completing the framers. Luke Kinsella took the junior prize from Evan Mason.

Pools in Zone A were Tommy’s 89cm Smoothie & Tommy Keogh / Anto Scanlon with a 27cm Flounder/Plaice tie. Zone B was taken out with Paul Scanlon’s 81cm Smoothie & John Hughes with a 27cm flounder.
