Irish Angling Update – 11 July 2019

A fine 108cm pike for Jacek Gorny

In most parts of Ireland it has been a pretty dry month so far, and the last week has seen many rivers drop even lower. There have been showers in the last couple of days but not enough to freshen things up. In many places the rivers are on their bones. Salmon anglers have been worst affected as, to be fair, trout, coarse and pike anglers have had some good fishing. The fine, settled weather has really suited sea anglers though and there are some great charter and small boat fishing reports in this week’s Irish Angling Update…

Another one goes back….

Salmon anglers in most places are doing their best to cope with low water. And in many places water temperatures are rising towards 20C, so Catch and Release anglers need to be aware that the chances of successfully releasing a fish are less as we get into this warm water zone. Anglers on the Drowes did pretty well last week all things considered and to be fair the fish played their part too as fresh grilse pushed their way up the river. Once they reach the lake though the take seems to be gone out of them. Elsewhere in Donegal the rivers, nearly all spate systems, saw little action though there were a few fish landed on the Owenea. At the other end of the country the Bandon had a few salmon reported following a bit of rain there, but most other rivers in the south west were unimproved by whatever bit of drizzle, showers or mist fell. The Munster Blackwater is seeing a few grilse caught, but again the river needs more rain.

Lough Corrib is in a lull at the moment with just some Caenis fishing activity to report. At this time of year the trout are zoned in on coarse fish fry and reluctant to take a fly. Watch this space, however, as the second mayfly hatch will get under way in the next couple of weeks. It’s a similar story from other lakes across the midlands and northwest. Any of the rivers that have water are providing some decent fishing on the evening rise, and the Nore is still seeing some good daytime fishing too when the conditions are not too bright. Stocked lakes like Lene, Carrigavantry and Knockaderry are producing some good fishing. A couple of quality rainbows can make up for a lot of blank days on a wild fishery.

Not too much to report from the coarse angling side of things this week. The conditions are very suitable for evening sessions after tench and bream, and deeper swims should still be fishing well enough during the daytime too.

pike

Pike anglers often take a break during the summer months, but this can be an exciting time to target this rewarding quarry. Explosive top water action can be breath taking, but don’t forget to play them to the net quickly and make sure you allow your prize to recover fully before releasing carefully. Pike are very sensitive to oxygen levels in the water during these warmer months. Good fishing is being reported from venues in Cavan, Longford, across the midlands to Roscommon and into Galway. Once again many find the early morning and evenings most productive.

Skate
Amy and her skate

We will go straight to the Catch of the Week here. Well done to Amy Kennedy. Amy is already a seasoned angler with a huge breath of experience under her belt. Enough to put many senior anglers to shame. She is no stranger to the Irish Angling Update and with her capture of a huge common skate she is back in our reports again. Anyone who has not seen the video of her catch is in for a treat. Fearless and fabulous, she is one of our most deserving Catch of the Week winners…

In other sea angling news we have reports of specimen spurdogs off Waterford, loads more action off the Cork coast, and great reports from Clare, Galway, Mayo, Donegal and Wicklow.

Finally all anglers are being asked to stay vigilant for salmon that are not salmon, salmon that are not well and crayfish that are dead or dying. If you are moving between river systems please ensure you Check, Clean and Dry to reduce the risk of spreading invasive species or the viruses and bacteria that cause fish diseases.

And now the weather…

Saturday will be dry with bright or sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 17 to 23C with mostly light northerly breezes, coolest in the north and warmest in the south. Saturday night will be dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11C. Sunday will be warm and dry with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 20 to 25C and mainly easterly breezes. Monday is much the same, but evening showers or longer spells of rain will move up from the south. The good news for those worn out from the rain-dancing is that Tuesday will be a very showery day. Some of the showers will be heavy with a risk of thunder and spot flooding. Well done to all who put in the effort! It will be cooler also with highest temperatures of 17 to 20C and mostly light east to southeast breezes. Wednesday will bring a mix of sunshine and showers also with highest temperatures of 18 to 21C. Current indications suggest that Thursday and Friday next will be warm, but unsettled with rain or showers at times and temperatures in the low twenties. That’s a bit more like it.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

West Cork Charters Silver Dawn busy at sea

David Edwards reports from the Silver Dawn…

Inshore fishing is fairly consistent with mackerel generally showing on most trips and anything up to 15 species throughout the day. Cod up to 6lb inshore and Ling up to 20lb offshore have shown and drifting out wide is producing Blue Shark to specimen size and we’ve also had our second large Porbeagle of the season.

Paddy Walsh with his first ever Blue

Blues are not as plentiful as they were this time last year but we our last two trips have seen a slight improvement with 8 and 9 fish coming to the boat. Wednesday was a great day as 10 year old Stephen Schwartau caught his first shark as did 69 year old Paddy Walsh! Ian O’shea came out of the day with the largest fish though.

West Cork Charters operates the Silver Dawn, a 41′ Rodman 1250 with twin 430 HP Engines out of Courtmacsherry. The range of fishing found within close range of Courtmacsherry is superb, with trips producing anything between 6 and 15 different species as a norm and in excess of 20 is possible if anglers are prepared to change methods and use different baits and lures throughout their trip. As a rule mackerel, pollock, cod and ling are usually encountered but several species of wrasse along with whiting, pouting, coalfish, bull huss, conger and many more are often added to the catch.
If you do choose to head offshore to sample the superb shark fishing available within 10 miles of Courtmacsherry, there is a very strong chance of encountering blue sharks and an increasing chance of bringing a porbeagle shark to the boat.

Clare coast charter boats getting lots of great fishing

County Clare charter skippers Luke Aston and Sean Maguire are reporting some great catches off the Clare coast and on the Shannon Estuary. Smaller shark species are turning up regularly with some good days on the tope and spurdogs enjoyed, and of course some fine bullhuss encountered too.

tope tadpole fish

There’s rarely any shortage of pollack and some good ling have also taken the baits in the last week. Wrasse are never too far away but one fish that did raise an eyebrow was a rarely seen tadpole fish. Some good eating fish like cod and haddock are also coming aboard.

Sharp hooks make the difference for winner at Ennerielly

South Shore SAC report on their latest competition fished on Ennerielly North on 7th July…

July can be a strange month for shore angling with beaches usually full of humans wearing Speedos and bathing suits. Picking a venue in July or August can be a nightmare. We left picking a venue open to see what the weather would throw up closer to the day, it looked like it would be mixed and not to warm. Our initial choice of Roney beach was infested with spider crabs from reports earlier that week , so that beach was out.

The committee had a meeting on Wednesday and we decided that Ennerielly North would be our best bet.
Not many matches are fished on this beach anymore for reasons unknown, it probably because of access or safety of cars in the carpark.
The access was overgrown and looked like you wouldn’t get a trolly down, worry’s were proved unfounded as there was no problem getting down.

Now for the fishing, bright sunshine no wind clear water get that into your head, plus the fact that no one had match fished the beach in donkey years was a nightmare scenario. What to do ? Go out for whatever, stay short and fiddle around inside with small hooks or a bit of mix and match.

Smoothhound pup
Smoothhound pup

The sound man Rob Moore was the sharpest from the off and was into pup hounds every cast for the first hour while lads around him could only drool at his pup skills. The game was up for the rest of us in that zone as the pups fecked off somewhere else. Rob went on to blitz the zone, well done Rob.

Meanwhile in the other zone the great white Thomas Keogh was returning to form with a great result. He caught a nice smoothound of 88cm, he told me after that he was using hooks he bought on holidays called snap dragons and puts his catch down to the sharpness of these hooks. Thomas went on to win the zone and the overall, great result lad.

Ennerielly
Small grey gurnard

We were graced with a living legend on Sunday Keith “how are you” Stafford put in a rare appearance. Keith told me he was inundated with undersized Gurnard and couldn’t get a counter such was the pain on the day.

With our juniors resting after their bronze medal win on international duty down in Kerry we were juniorless. They put in a great performance in Kerry in tough conditions.

results table

We had another new member join us on Sunday , he’s only a small lad so be gentle with him. Welcome Janis hope you have many years with the club.

A big thank you to Alan Flahive who was a big help dragging everyone’s trolley up the path off the beach, he must have been knackered after his hard work. What a gentleman…

River Bandon Report

There were nine salmon reported for the week these were mainly grilse. The river is low at the moment and the most successful method was shrimp. There are sea trout about at the moment which should provide good evening sport on the tidal water or just above it.

Muster Coarse Anglers fish night match in Clare

Munster Coarse Anglers report on their Furn and Feather match fished at O’Brien’s Bridge…

Muster Coarse Anglers held their annual night match this weekend. Going back over two decades this 12 hour match is always held on one of the Clare lakes and with the kind permission of Tulla Coarse Angling club we fished Lough Briget’s – Swan Island. Meeting for the draw was at 6pm  with hopes of nets full of large Tench and massive Bream by 9am next morning.

coarse fishing

We arranged ourselves along the peninsula. Sadly only one tench and a couple of decent size bream decided to make their presence felt. However this did not mean we were short of bites. Hybrids, roach, skimmers and millions of small Rudd vied for any maggot that was placed on a hook.

Munster Blackwater Report

The grilse have most definitely arrived during the last week although not in any huge numbers – but at least some are being picked up. There is a fresh run of silver fish in the tidal areas and average weights are 2-4 kg so not a bad size. Effort has increased with many more anglers on the riverbank; small flies and lighter gear being the preferred option for them.

There is still very little activity above Mallow due to the challenging conditions. A lot of fish are reported to be just downstream of Fermoy but not moving; this may change with the forecasted rain for the coming midweek period.

Keith Shearing (pictured) had a good day on Fortwilliam Fishery with two nice grilse off the Ellis beat, both fish released safely.

The grilse are also showing up at Blackwater Salmon Fishery with four fish caught on July 10th.

Another one goes back….

Evening fishing for Trout is still underway with catches, especially from those fisheries downstream of Fermoy described as very good.
