Erriff producing fish as grilse start to appear

Osgur Grieve sent in the report for the period 07/06/19 – 12/06/19.

We have had 8 salmon during this time.

On Friday 7th visiting anglers Bob Thomas and Michael Child fished beats 9 and 8 for the day. Bob was first into action releasing a 3lbs wild grilse from the Gauge Pool using a Cascade. That afternoon Michael was fishing his way down the Holly Pool on Beat 8 when he hooked into a good wild salmon of 7lbs which he released, he was using an Ally’s shrimp variant.

Saturday 8th saw the return of the former fishery manager’s son Trevor Stafford who had a great day landing 3 salmon of 7.2lbs, 5lbs, and 2.75lbs two of which were wild and released. These fish came from the Bridge Pool, Middle Garden and Sea Pool on a Black and Green fly of his own tying and a Cascade. On Sunday 9th Jim Stafford fished with us and landed a fine ranched salmon of just over 12lbs, this fish was caught on a Cascade in the Middle Garden Pool. Later that evening regular angler Neil Spellacy fished and had a small ranched grilse of 2.5lbs from the Middle Garden Pool on a Black Shrimp. Monday 10th was quieter on the catch front despite the best efforts of good anglers. John Ryan fished with us on Wednesday the 12th and landed a 3.25lbs grilse from the Falls Pool on a small Collie Dog tube.

At the time of writing the river is at 0.72m, we could do with a dash of rain to bring it up although this recent lack of rain hasn’t deterred fresh fish from still entering the system. We will be expecting the grilse to appear in better numbers over the coming weeks and we still have some spring fish entering the system.

The Erriff is a spate river draining beautiful mountain scenery and entering the sea at Killary Harbour, near Leenane. The river is split into 9 beats, and is flyfishing only for the most part. The river provides quality fishing for salmon and sea trout in spectacular surroundings. There is also lake fishing available on Tawnyard Lough, on one of the tributaries, providing sea trout fishing from July to September.

Rain improves fishing on the Munster Blackwater

Fort William reports that they have a busy couple of days on the river. On Monday this week Eddie O’ Connell had a lovely fish of 6lbs, safely returned. They had a great day on Tuesday when a 12lbs of silver took Chris Coady and was released after. There was another lovely double figure fish of approximately 14lbs for Chris Burt from New Zealand on fly. Both off the castle beat. And then there was first on fly for Sean Power estimated at 10lbs off the Ellis Beat plus a couple more hooked and lost.

The Blackwater Salmon Fishery great day on the river yesterday. Scott Brown, who had bought an Atlantic Salmon Trust Lot donated by Glenda Powell for their fund raising auction, was over to make the most of his purchase. He certainly did that with a fine big salmon.  There were two other fish lost and a lot more activity than in previous days with fish showing themselves.

Guy Marnier from France had two lovely salmon with Ballyduff Bridge Fishery on Monday 10th June. He caught both of his fish at Ballincurrig on the upper river on the fly. They weighed around 10lb and 7lb. There was also another nice fish lost at the net at the Bridge beat on the lower river. Fishing was quiet on Tuesday after the rain but there are a more fish moving compared to previous days.  Yesterday they had 3 fish landed and 2 lost. There was nice grilse of 4lbs on the fly for David Coughlan this morning at the bridge beat and 2 fish for our French visitor Guy Marnier at Ballygarrett also on the fly, 7lbs and 3lbs respectively.

David’s fish goes back…

Right now the river is in great order and clearing nicely. There is more heavy rain forecast for Friday and this should freshen things up again and get more fish moving throughout the system.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Just ounces between top anglers at Edenderry Festival

Edenderry Coarse Angling Club reports on their first match of the season fished at the weekend…

edenderry

Well the final day of the three day festival didn’t disappoint and this year was literally a festival of ounces. It’s been the closest final day in years with Chris Grehan going into the final day with 9lb 04oz  he drew an end peg on Killeen and put another 18lb 02oz on to his weight to fall just 15 ounces short of top man Bob Clough Warrington with 28lb 05oz. Bob’s display over the week has been outstanding as he drew mid section all week and he thoroughly deserved his victory – a brilliant bloke too who lives for his fishing.

We have to take our hats off to the Station House and the two Emma’s who’s hospitality was outstanding and they way they looked after us all week and put on a brilliant night for the presentation last night on behalf of the club thank you girls!

Again thank you to our sponsors John Foley and Pat Morrissey to which the club is forever grateful. That’s it for another year so roll on next year!

Lots of pike for anglers in the mid Shannon area

Adrian Duffy, IFI, reports that Aaron of AM Angling is continuing to mix it up with the pike in the Mid-Shannon area. Conditions were far from favourable and the winds made it rough and uncomfortable at times. All the same Aaron’s clients saw plenty of action and managed 68 fish over 3 days. The fish were not huge, with the biggest going 14lb and only 3 other double figure fish landed, but there were plenty between 7 and 9lbs and everyone enjoyed catching these feisty predators.

Great light gear fishing for pollack and wrasse on Galway Bay

John Fleming reports from Galway Bay…

Very hard going on Saturday. Spurdog and tope were the initial plan but with a very strong and squally westerly wind that was soon shot in the foot. We went on the reefs instead looking for wrasse and pollock. Wrasse didn’t really play ball but we got a couple and shane had a gorgeous cuckoo. Shane also had a nice red gurnard. We also had a few good pollock with Keith getting this beauty about 10lb in only 30 feet of water.

pollack
A big pollack from a shallow mark

Sunday was a different story with a nice westerly breeze allowing us to drift slowly over the reefs inshore. We set out targeting pollack and wrasse. The plan was do a few hours lure fishing with soft plastics and metal jigs and they certainly did their job with the pollack and wrasse absolutely smashing them.

We tried for tope and spurs for a couple of hours but unfortunately no joy.
All the same we had a great fun day on the light gear

Nice Trout Fishing for Noel on the River Nore

Fishing guide Noel Molloy has been having some nice fishing on the River Nore over the last few weeks. Noel has been using nymphs and dries and has had some very nice trout for himself and his clients. The water levels have been good and even though there was a flood in the river last week after heavy rain, levels dropped and the water cleared fairly quickly.

The are some olives about and mayfly was sporadic to say the least and the cool breezes have not helped matters. However, despite the unfavourable weather for flies hatches, nymphs always seem to produce good results when the hatches are sparse. If you fancy a days guided fishing on the beautiful River Nore why not get in touch with Noel!

Salmon fishing steady at Delphi

David McEvoy reports from Delphi Lodge….

Fishing here at Delphi has been steady since my last update, with fourteen fish landed, mainly grilse, with a few springers thrown in for good measure. Conditions have been excellent with the river varying in height from 60 to 44 this morning.

salmon
Landing a wild salmon at Delphi. Just enough time for a quick photo before the recovery and release.

Warren Osako continued his good run of form with two fish on the 5th, the first a sparkling grilse of approx. 3lbs from the Rock Pool on a Collie Dog and the second of approx. 4lbs, from the Stream on Finlough, also on a Collie Dog. Kurt Roth also had one from the Stream on Finlough of 4lbs on a Willie Gunn. Warren had another from the Stream on Finlough on the 6thof 2lbs4ozs, again on a Collie Dog. In the afternoon his wife Susan had a beautiful grilse of 5lbs6ozs from the Deadman’s on a Cascade and her fishing partner Nancy Richerson, landed her first ever salmon, a fish of 2lbs10ozs, from the Quarry, also on a Cascade. Kurt Roth finished off the day with one of 6lbs7ozs from the Stream on Finlough on a Willie Gunn.

On the 7thShauna Waterer stole the limelight with a sea liced fish of 9lbs14ozs from the Quarry Pool on a Park Shrimp. In the afternoon Kurt Roth, again to the fore, landed two in 30 minutes from the Kings Pool of 3lbs15ozs and 4lbs3ozs on guess what, a Willie Gunn. There was only one landed yesterday. Michael Osgerby landed his first ever salmon, weighing in at 3lbs13.5ozs on a Posh Tosh from the Meadow Pool.

This morning Peter Eaton had a tremendous start to his week, when he landed a sea liced fish of 7lbs5ozs from the Rock Pool on a Red Francis. Wayne Byrne had a fish from Boat point on Finlough of 6lbs1oz on a Cascade. Bas Maiburg from the Netherlands on his first day’s salmon fishing managed to land his first ever. The fish was caught in the Stream on Finlough, weighed in at 4lbs9.5ozs and took a Collie Dog. Bas is still in shock and I hope he doesn’t think that salmon fishing is that easy!

Water levels are excellent at the moment and even though there is no significant rainfall till Thursday, conditions should be ideal as the system is well topped up. There are some rods available this week and next, and then we are pretty full for the following four weeks. In other words, if you want to try your luck at Delphi give us a shout in the next few days.

Paul Boothby and Tony Hopkins clear winners of the Inniscarra Feeder Pairs Festival.

Inniscarra TDL reports on the Inniscarra Feeder Pairs Festival…
Inniscarra

07 June: Congratulations to winning duo Paul Boothby and Tony Hopkins clear winners of the Inniscarra Feeder Pairs Festival.

This inaugural event saw, for the first time in Ireland, fishing ‘continental style’ with anglers sharing a peg. It was a well played out competition which saw competitors from the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands fish together five sections on Inniscarra by rotation.

winners

Going into the final day of the Festival all eyes were on the top five. It was a race among the top pairs as four out of the five headed to the Garden Centre where we had seen some good bream catches throughout the week. It was always going to be difficult to beat Tony & Paul who had 104kg between them already.

Well done to all. Thank you to the sponsors, match organiser Pat Falvey, and hosts O’Callaghans Bar & Guest House
