Salmon angling gets going on Currane, no springer yet

Vincent Appleby is back for 2019 reporting on all the comings and going at Lough Currane…

Lough Currane

17 January: Happy New Year to you all and Tight Lines on this opening day of the 2019 Season. So straight to the facts, there were 12 Boats manipulating and sadly there were no Spring Salmon caught this opening day but it was great to hear, Cahersiveen and Currane Angler Mr. Steven Donnelly, while trolling with his good friend Mike, caught 3 Kelts and 3 Trout and were safely returned and staying in the Kelt department, local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 1 Kelt and again safely returned. Wind calm this morning and light SE in the afternoon and overcast and very cold. Pictures courtesy of Ladies World Champion fly fisher Glenda Powell!

18 January: A few boats were out manipulating their lures and flies and with a nice SW wind blowing then veered NW later in the afternoon. It’s not surprising that one boat was casting their flies into renowned Currane Salmon lies, but sadly there was no response from the Currane Wild Atlantic Salmon, be it on flies or lures. Wind as already stated with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, Valentia recorded 14.6 mm of rainfall.

19 January: The Currane anglers rods and reels were all quiet on the SW front in all departments. Wind calm first thing this morning and eventually came from the NW light with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 9.1 mm Maximum air temperature 9.7 C.

20 January: Just a few boats out and no reports of any wild action except on the wild mountains of Kerry of the odd shot being fired at the wing. Wind light NW with showers and very cold. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 7.3 mm. Maximum air temperature 9.9C.

21 January: Lough Currane anglers were left redundant today as a strong SW blew across Lough Currane and hammered into the North Shore and followed by heavy rain at times. Just for the record the Irish Meteorological Service has put Ireland on a Yellow alert as you can see clicking this link https://www.met.ie/warnings and that sums up today’s facts. Wind as already stated, yesterdays weather amount of rainfall, 1.9 mm. Maximum air temperature 9.1 c.

22 January: I’m starting today’s notes on a personal note because its six long years since my father passed away this day and I can still see him now getting his toothbrush into fishing especially on those beautiful Heavenly Lakes, Dad R.I.P. Now today’s no Spin No Fly’s just Facts Zone and  I can say without any fear of contradiction it was all quiet on the SW Front in all departments. Wind NW fresh and overcast with showers and very cold, felt like 4 c. Today’s weather as already stated, yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 7.9 mm. Maximum air temperature 8.8 c.

That is your ration  from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery…

salmon fishing at Delphi

This is the perfect opportunity to fish for fresh run spring salmon between 8 and 20lbs while using a floating line. Delphi Lodge and Fishery is a famous estate set in the wilds of Connemara.

A long standing 30-year Syndication has now come to an end which means rods are once again available throughout the key spring salmon fishing season, from the 1st of February to May. Delphi has for 25 years operated a hatchery, which by using the Delphi genetic strain of Salmon greatly boosts the numbers of returning fish.

This is the perfect way to start your salmon season as early as February and not have to wait until June before the Norwegian or Icelandic rivers open up. Wild salmon are caught on a voluntary catch and release policy while the spring salmon originating from our own hatchery can be kept by the angler.

A limited amount of 8 rods are available on a first come first serve basis with a guarantee of keeping the slot then year after year. Options are 3 day, 4 day or 7 day package, either on a self catering basis in one of the estates newly renovated cottages or staying in the Lodge full board, famous for its irish country house cooking.

Bookings are now being taken for the 2019 season. For enquiries please contact the office on +353 (0)95 42222 or email to info@delphilodge.ie

Get your Skates on and book a trip in Courtmacsherry!

Skipper Mark Gannon reports on sea angling from Courtmacsherry, where anglers have enjoyed a fine start to 2019.

The fishing off Courtmacsherry has started well for 2019,with good catches of Pollack, Ling, Coalfish and a scatter of medium sized cod. The wrecks fished last week were disappointing with pollack only to 6lbs, but fishing inshore was actually producing better size fish.

This group certainly enjoyed a fine start to 2019 with this Common Skate
This group certainly enjoyed a fine start to 2019 with this Common Skate

At anchor we have had good catches of Common Skate, with a specimen for Rob and Alex, each fish well over 100 lbs – 5 in total boated with one broken line and another spat the hook.  Several Bull Huss were also landed with a few dogfish.

In the estuary, where the clarity of the water is pristine, the odd bass is being landed. It’s worth pointing out that the problem that we experienced years ago with algal bloom (sea lettuce) in the estuary which was  making fishing very difficult is a thing of the past, due to several positive initiatives by local industry and the EPA.

We are available for charters and offering good reductions on skate fishing charters at the moment – €350 Max 6 anglers,

Irish Angling Update – 11 January 2019

salmon fishing
Opening day of the 2019 salmon season on the River Drowes

Happy New Year to all our readers. 2019 got off to a great start with a first salmon of the season caught early in the morning and lots of other news from coarse, pike and sea anglers. The year finished well for anglers too with some serious pike landed and the mild settled weather was welcomed by charter boat anglers heading to sea…

salmon
First salmon of the year was caught on the River Lackagh by Michael McCann

Salmon anglers started the year with a bang. By 9.30am on New Year’s Day Michael McCann, who was fishing on the Lackagh River in Co. Donegal, had caught and released the first salmon of the season. Anglers on other rivers were not as lucky but there is still a lot to play for.  The first salmon caught on and released on the Drowes Fishery will win the lucky angler a 1kg bar of silver. This is one of a number of innovative ideas being run on the river to mark International Year of the Salmon. The full list of open rivers for 2019 is available at fishinginireland.info/salmon/salmonregs.htm

Milltown Lake
36lb 4oz pike for Ronan Murray

While salmon anglers were waiting to start 2019, pike anglers were ending 2018 in style. We had great reports in from Pallas Lake which fished well all through the first part of the winter. At their last competition of the year they once again caught an released pike to over 20lb. But these reports were soon eclipsed by the capture of a super 36lb 4oz pike from Mill Lake by Ronan Murray who was fishing in a Castleblaney Anglers competition.

There was a strong finish to the year and a good start to 2019 for coarse anglers too.  We have some great reports in from Cork, Leitrim, Roscommon, Monaghan and Northern Ireland. The Sheemore Anglers in Leitrim had a telling statistic. For the month of December their competitions saw 1,100lb of coarse fish weighed in and released.

Shore and charter boat anglers from Dublin to Donegal were out over the Christmas break and over the new year. It was great to see boats out in the settled weather and we have charter fishing reports from Wicklow, Clare and Donegal. On the shore angling front there were updates from regular contributors on the east coast and in the north west. One of the stand out report came from West Cork, where mullet on fly were landed as early as 02 January.

The Dublin Angling Initiative was in the news again. This time the Journal.ie covered their exploits and complemented their article with a great video you can watch here:

Met Eireann forecasts breezy and mostly cloudy day for Saturday with further patchy rain, drizzle and mist, mainly affecting Ulster during the morning and early afternoon. Largely dry elsewhere. Relatively mild again with highest temperatures ranging 9 to 11 degrees but quite windy with fresh and gusty West to Northwest winds, strong to near gale force and gusty near the North coast. Sunday much the same followed by drier brighter weather to start the week.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.
