Wrecking on the radar for Courtmacsherry charter boats

Pollack, the target!
Pollack, the target!

Mark Gannon in Courtmacsherry tells us it’s always nice to be able to get out in January.  The weather has been good enough and there are plenty of Coalfish about. Pollack are there too but the bigger ones have been scarce so far – mostly all 4 to 5 lbs. No skate yet, but they’ve not been targeted to date. Skate charters are available for those interested. Finally Mark tells us that his charter available for this Sunday – the weather looks good for offshore wrecking with slack tides. Phone 086/8250905.

South Shore Anglers fish for Heart Children Ireland

South Shore Angler’s Paul Mason report on an end of year event at Killiney…

On Killiney Beach at the end of 2018

Some the east coast’s best anglers put in an appearance on Killiney beach on Saturday for a fishing meet and competition in aid of the Heart Children Ireland.

25 slightly rotund lads after their Christmas stuffing waddled onto Killiney beach on a near perfect day for fishing.

We had to curtail the entry to 26 anglers because of space and rough ground on the left of the beach. Fishing was expected to be fair with not much showing until darkness and the hoards of whiting turned up. The big hitters contacted the unlucky shiny pirahnas early and top up before the deluge.

A bright eyed dragonet, a change from the silvery whiting

As predicted when darkness fell all hell broke loose with anglers flying up and down the beach getting cards marked . Speed was secret for successful anglers with lots of baited traces at the ready.

Paul Whelan was the overall winner with a creditable 31 fish in zone B , Ciaran Fogarty also had 31 fish in zone A. Well done lads great fishing …

It was a very enjoyable day with members of the public intrigued by the event.

Flounder, sea trout, mackerel and more for Doengal shore anglers

Stefan Martin reports from Donegal…

The Mariners line the beach…

28 December: A fun day out at the daylight league outing during the holidays today. 16 anglers set up in front on the calm inver bay catching some lovely flounders from the off. A few new faces joined in the fishing and everybody on the beach caught fish. An early 38cm flounder for Jason set the mark for longest fish before a treble haul of fish for Christopher. Some good 36cm flounder came on the feed as the tide ebbed and with Dessie and Katie battling it out in zone A it took a late double haul for Dessie to edge it out for overall.. winner of the longest fish cash prize was Jason Greene with a 38cm flounder. In 2nd place overall cash prize was won by Katie McGettigan and 1st place cash was won by Dessie O Keeney.. great fishing well done to all who took part.. There will be no outings now for a few weeks as the boats go back to fish for scad and mackerel. Also a few members were looking for some more club jackets and hoodies or hats so another order will be going in soon if anyone wants to place an order let us know.. the €20 deposit for the Belmullet trip will be taken in January for the April 12th weekend away (Will be refunded down there)

Plenty of Flounder about

03 January: Early January and still getting mackerel at the pier… fresh bait! The shore is still full of wrasse and the boxing day swimmers said they weren’t even shivering coming out of the water

Shore caught sea trout – lovely video of the release on the Killybegs Mariners Facebook page.

04 January: Day one on the beach for the new year provided an acrobatic silver arrow wave dancing it’s way across the surf which was quickly released back where it belongs, really mild conditions in Donegal and great to be out, off the mark.

First Bar of Silver still to be claimed on the Drowes

Shane Gallagher

Opening Day on the Drowes

Despite a large number of rods and excellent conditions no fresh, wild Atlantic salmon were reported from the river on the first day of the 2019 salmon fishing season. Prospects were encouraging with extremely mild conditions and favourable water levels but apart from the odd sighting of fresh spring fish most of the activity on the water was from kelts.

Anglers on the water

Thanks to all the anglers, both young and old who traveled from near and far to spend the first day of their season on the Drowes. It is always a disappointment not to start the first day of the season with a fresh spring fish but it is some consolation to be back on the river bank, meeting fellow anglers on what has been one of the most pleasant opening days in many years.

International Year of the Salmon

2019 is the International Year of the Salmon and we will be marking it at the Drowes in a very special way.

  • Firstly, all anglers starting their salmon fishing season at the river in 2019 will be given a special stainless steel commemorative pin.
  • Secondly, the angler who catches and releases the first salmon of the year from the river will be presented with the newly commissioned Conservation Cup.
  • Finally the angler who catches and releases the first salmon from the Drowes in 2019 will be presented with a 1 kilo bar of pure silver worth approximately €750.
prize
A bar of silver for a bar of silver!

A fresh run spring salmon is commonly referred to as a bar of silver and for anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing one it is easy to see why.

Catching and releasing the first salmon of the season, or any salmon during the season, is not by itself, going to address the decline in salmon numbers seen in recent years. However, it can be used to create awareness among the non angling public of how precious a resource the salmon is.

Inland Fisheries Ireland commissioned a report by Millward Brown in 2015 as to the economic contribution of salmon angling to the Irish economy. The findings were that salmon and sea trout angling contributed over €210 million annually to the Irish economy.

In 2015, 25,107 salmon were landed by anglers in Ireland. This means that every salmon landed in Ireland in 2015 was worth €8,364 to the Irish economy. The average weight of the salmon landed by anglers was 2.7kg.
Clearly our salmon are precious. They are in fact more precious and more valuable than the bars of silver to which they are so often compared. (All figures can be fact checked at www.fisheriesireland.ie)

As anglers, as people with an interest in and love for salmon, we can use 2019, the International Year of the Salmon to be mindful of how precious salmon are and to make an extra special effort to ensure its survival and return to abundance in the future.

(Full terms & conditions for eligibility & verification process of C&R will be announced prior to opening day).
