The guys from Killybegs Fishing Trips have had a busy week with plenty of fish action. The highlight was getting their 2025 bluefin tuna season off the mark, with the first fish of the season estimated at a whopping 575lb. That fish was followed by a 425lb fish on the same day and there were plenty of other hook ups in the following days, with one fish landed and a few that got away.

It wasn’t all tuna action though, as a day fishing the reefs also threw up some fine pollack as well as some ling and cod.

Weather was absolutely unbelievable on Saturday reports John Fleming of Blue Shark Angling. John and his crew changed things up, with James and his son Matt looking to chase some tope.
Mackerel were not easy found on the morning so they headed straight for a bank and anchored up. They weren’t waiting too long before we had a nice huss, and shortly after they were into the tope.
They had roughly 10 tope or possibly a few more as skipper John lost count in all the excitement.
With the mission accomplished it was decided to make a move to a Reef and anchored up to see what might be about. Unfortunately no huss or spurs were caught but they had some nice pollock and ling. Sounds like a lovely day on the sea and good fishing. What more would ya want!
John tells us he has the full boat available this Saturday coming the 23rd of August due to a cancellation – General fishing/tope/spurs.
Licenced BFT operator TunaMick has got his 2025 bluefin season underway with a bang this week. As they made their way out of Donegal Harbour, they were surrounded by birds, whales, dolphins and tuna only 3 nautical miles from the shore.
The lures were dropped and within 20 minutes they had a double hookup. Mick’s son Cian took one of the rods and, after a good struggle, brought his fish alongside to be tagged.

And they also managed to bring the second one to the boat as well, no mean feat… The fish were estimated at 400 and 500lb.

As is often the case, the other wildlife on show rivalled the tuna for excitement as they had the pleasure of watching four humpback whales, two fin whales, and plenty of dolphins and minke whales.
Early on morning Sunday 17th of August, second edition of Lough Derg Perch Bonanza 2025 took place on magnificent Lough Derg, report the organiser Perch Master Ireland.
Twenty-three teams have entered this year but one team couldn’t make it. Checking-in went smoothly as always with help from Ollie Andries.

At 9 am after start all teams scattered on the lake, trying to find active Perch over 25cm, longer the better. First results were uploaded very fast on @FishDonkey app used for this competition.
Weather conditions were good, plenty of sunshine and a bit of wind, wrong direction, easterly wind not a favourite wind for predator fish.

Looking back at the leaderboard, it was like a rollercoaster with changes nonstop, at least first part of the competition.
All teams had time to fish until 5pm, when the app closed for everyone, and they had 15 minutes to come back to hand over the measuring boards.
After checking all results uploaded on FishDonkey app and managed to retrieve all boats of the water we could have the Prize Giving.
Results of second edition of Lough Derg Perch Bonanza are
Well Done to everyone who took part in this year event.
Massive Well Done to top 3 and longest Perch!
Now preparing for Perch Master Ireland 2025 (league which will take place next Sunday on 24th of August on a section of a Midlands river, and on 7th of September Lough Ree Predator Challenge 2025.

John Twomey, IFI Macroom reports on last week’s salmon catches on the Lee. Water levels were very low and fishing was slow. There were 12 Salmon reported, best of these was a 6lb fish from the Kingsley Weir on Shrimp.
Sean Maguire reports on his last couple of trips off the Clare coast…
15 August: A Dublin family group out the last two days in this beautiful weather. A couple of blue sharks, and a dropped run that had all the signs of a porbeagle, also a good mix of fish and lots of spurdogs.
20 August: Some nice species fishing last weekend with these two groups. A few nice pollock and whiting, and lots of spurdogs as soon as we started using bait. Also squid, cuckoo and ballan wrasse.

Jim Clohessy of TopFisher.eu was fishing with Emmet Fennell last week and had good sport with pollack and bass…
Transferred my electric winch from the old to the new trailer last week. Arranged an evening run on lures. Firstly we headed to some inshore reefs to suss some pollack. There was an awkward sloppy sea from the east. It tends to put up a gnarly lump that is uncomfortable at speed. Luckily we weren’t travelling too far. There was a good scattering of decent fish around. We were taking our time with them as we wanted to release all fish. Crazy paddle tail on 60g did most of the damage for me, mango juice was lethal again.
We were watching the tide in order to hit a few bass areas. Here we began to contact and see some fish. It was hard to get a take. There seemed to be lots of juvenile Pollack about. There was a few fish breaking so I popped on a Fiiish UK & IE Biotop in black.
Second cast and wham… a superb take off the surface. The fish were really scrapping and it was all blue fins and headshakes! It was tough to keep contact with the fish but we had enough action to keep us occupied… even caught a few fresh mackerel for the mother.
The bite eased as the tide slackened. We decided to head for Paddy’s point. The winch performed flawlessly making for an easy retrieve. Grand evening on the water!

This sort of light lure action is easily achievable for any small boat skipper. Once you locate some reefy ground, drifting with something like 60g heads, depends on drift, and a nice balanced lure rod ensures that you’ll get the most from crash diving pollack… it’s great craic.

We were using 7-21g or 10-30g M or MH rods. Think Illex Nitro or maybe the Favorite X1. Emmet was thrilled with the X1 he worked soft lures and poppers all evening without a bother.

Lough O’Flynn was the venue for the Donnellan cup on Sunday last with a excellent turn out of 15 boats in what was a keenly contested event, reports Joe Fitzharris.
Anglers were greeted to testing trout angling conditions with water temperatures rising and summer weather to the fore.
Nevertheless numbers on the water nearly always ensure that some anglers get lucky.
The local Madden team of Gary & Derek had the Heaviest boat catch on the Day with the Heaviest fish prize going to John Finn Roscommon. Most successful angling methods on the day we’re dry Daddies & Sedges for some, with Humongous, Invicta muddlers, and silver dabbers also successful.
Heaviest fish was a 2lb 2oz trout caught by John Finn.
