Inland Fisheries Ireland appeals to farmers on silage and slurry

Although the high temperatures of the past few weeks may now be behind us,  ongoing warm summer weather and low water levels can magnify environmental impacts.

Inland Fisheries Ireland has issued an appeal to farmers to remain vigilant during the summer months when harvesting silage and spreading slurry to avoid water pollution and the loss of nutrients into rivers, lakes and other watercourses.

The appeal comes on the back of last week’s major fish kill in Claremorris, where over 1,000 wild brown trout, and other species, died as a result of a suspected agricultural silage leak.

Silage operations will be ongoing all summer and silage effluent has the potential to cause devastating pollution in streams and rivers. Such effluent is a significant polluting substance, starving fish and invertebrate life of oxygen, resulting in potentially massive fish kills if it enters a watercourse. With some rivers low during summertime with little dilution capacity, the effect of a small leak can cause huge damage.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is advising farmers to follow its simple six point plan to ensure good farmyard management and reduce their risk of polluting:

  1. Use round bales as the most environmentally friendly way to store silage.
  2. If a silage pit is being used, ensure it is properly sealed to prevent leakage from under the slab.
  3. Carry out slurry spreading in dry weather and never when heavy rain is forecast.
  4. Never spread slurry close to a watercourse, be aware of the slope of land to the watercourse.
  5. Do not clean tanks beside any watercourse, stream or a river.
  6. Do not allow any effluent or washings to enter any rainwater gully.

Dr Greg Forde, Head of Operations at Inland Fisheries Ireland, said: “Warm summer weather can magnify the impact of even the smallest leak of silage effluent, with potentially devastating consequences for the environment. Inland Fisheries Ireland is grateful to the farming community for their continued consideration and vigilance. Good farmyard management can help to prevent accidental runs of polluting substances and protect the local environment. This will have a significant and lasting positive impact on valuable wild fish populations in an area.”

Inland Fisheries Ireland manages a wide range of environmental issues which can affect the fisheries resource, with over 26,000 environmental inspections carried out in 2017 across industrial, forestry, engineering, water treatment and wind farms sites. There were 1,511 inspections across farmyards to help identify any risks and prevent damage to the local aquatic habitat.

Inland Fisheries Ireland has a confidential hotline number to enable members of the general public to report incidents of water pollution, fish kills and illegal fishing – 0818 34 74 24 or 0818 FISH 24. For more information on Inland Fisheries Ireland, visit www.fisheriesireland.ie.

Very low levels on Owenea but the odd salmon caught

Monday 21st May to Sunday 10th June 2018 (3 weeks).

We received a good flood on the 21st May reading 0.38m. Thereafter the river dropped as the hot, dry, sunny weather set in. Except for a small fresh (0.18m) on the 4th June very low summer levels prevailed for the 3 weeks. The fishery was understandably very quiet and only 3 visiting rods fished. There were a few salmon recorded however. On the 21st, Mickey McLaughlin recorded a 15lb salmon caught and released on a spinner from beat 8. Alan Watson recorded 2 fish caught on fly in very low water. The first was an 8lb salmon caught from beat 8 on the 31st May and the 2nd a 6lb grilse caught from beat 9 on the 2nd June.

Drowes fishes well given the tough conditions

Monday 21st May  to Sunday 10th June 2018 (3 weeks).

The gauge read 0.40m on the 21st May. Decent rain meant the river rose to read a fair 0.44m on the 22nd but thereafter, the river fell over the next 3 weeks and ran at low summer levels. By the 10th June the gauge was reading only 0.33m. Allied to the bright, hot, windless and cloudless weather most days brought, salmon angling was not easy and rod attendance well down. Early morning and late evening offered the best opportunities for those able to fish at these times. Despite the hot sunny weather and the low water conditions, the river fished very well given the challenging conditions with salmon caught most days. Given here are some of the catches from the Register.

Andreas Langeder reported a 7lb salmon caught on fly from the Blackwater
Andreas Langeder reported a 7lb salmon caught on fly from the Blackwater

On the 21st, Stephen Grew recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from The Grazing’s. On the 22nd, Gary Morrow reported an 8½lb salmon caught on prawn from the Blackwater. John Parkinson registered a 9lb salmon caught on prawn from Melly’s High Bank and Tom Colgan caught and released an 8lb salmon. On the 23rd, Peter Cook recorded a 3lb grilse caught on fly from Upper Mill. On the 24th, Andreas Langeder reported a 7lb salmon caught on fly from the Blackwater. Frederick Rollin logged a 6lb grilse caught on fly from Red Roof and Darren Haire accounted for two grilse weighing 5 & 6lb caught on prawn from the Sea Pools. On the 25th, Paul McCausland recorded a 6lb grilse caught on fly from The Corry. On the 26th, Michael Joyce recorded a 3lb grilse caught & released on a Flying ‘C’ lure from Lennox’s. On the 27th, Nigel Abraham reported 2 salmon both weighing 7½lb caught on worm from Lennox’s and Perch Hole.

On the 31st, Davey McKee had a good day with 3 salmon weighing 5, 5 & 11lb caught from the Sea Pools on prawn with one of the 5lb fish and the 11lb fish being released. On the 1st, Jenz Frey recorded a 6lb grilse caught on fly from Red Roof. On the 3rd, Frederick Rollin accounted for 2 salmon weighing 7 & 9lb caught and released on fly from Two Islands.

Yves Metayer reported an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from Red Roof

On the 4th, Julian Ciconte recorded a 7lb salmon caught on a spinner from Red Roof. Johhny Ciconte reported a 5lb grilse caught on a spinner from Red Roof and Paul McCausland accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from Red Roof. All 3 of these fish were caught from the same spot whithin half an hour. The benefit of being in the right spot at the right time! On the 5th, Jean Yves Metayer registered a 3lb grilse caught on fly from Red Roof. On the 8th, Michael Joyce recorded a 3½lb grilse caught on fly from Briney’s and George McBride accounted for an 8lb salmon. On the 10th Jean Yves Metayer reported an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from Red Roof.

A break in the good weather is forecast for mid-week which may bring the river some much needed rain. But even given low water conditions, the river is producing good numbers of salmon. Prospects remain good.

Longwood family goes Wild on White Lake

Mick Flanagan reports on fishing on Whitelake…

Some weeks back we featured 8 years old Moya Molloy from Longwood, who had a wonderful days fishing with day Christy. The deadly duo were on the Whitelake and had some cracking rainbow trout. Brian Conlon of Wild Total Outdoors was so impressed with young Moya catch that he sponsored the young Longwood anger a very special prize. It was a beautiful prize, and Brian put a huge selection of fishy gear into naturally a lovely Pink Tackle Box. Brian will be keeping an eye on our weekly angling reports, and if a special angling adventure is featured he will come on line with some more cracking prizes.

Some fine rainbows caught on Lene recently

Mick Flanagan reports from Lough Lene…

Quite a number of anglers were out on Lene during this beautiful spell of summer weather. The ladies fly anglers hosted a day out on Lene last Sunday June 3rd and a few cracking trout were caught. Julie Gerry of Collinstown had the longest trout measuring 63cms, and also in the thick of the action was Cheryl James with a trout of 55cms. Lough Lene Anglers are in action next Sunday as they host the Paddy Dolan trophy for pike. It’s an 11am start and all boats in at Fagan’s Point at 6pm.

LENE RAINBOWS

Last week some savage rainbow trout were caught on the fly. Tony reilly of Co. Meath had a super fish weighing 5lbs 2oz, and our good pal Marty Smith rattled the scales with a whopper of 5lbs 6oz. Marty was back over from Macklesfield near Manchester in England, and was celebrating his 60th birthday. Marty is coming over the past 15 years to Mullingar and stays in Kerrigan’s B&B in Harbour Street. Kerrigan’s is a top class Pub and accommodation provider here in Mullingar and recently was refurnished, and the walls are decorated with some old sporting photographs. Worth dropping in and taking a look.

SAVAGE TROUT CAUGHT ON OWEL

The Monasterevin Anglers were back on Owel last Saturday for their annual competition.  We have featured the club members over the years as they honor one of their past members Timmy Meredith. On the day they fish what is known as “Timmy’s Day” and this year the fishing was tough, but the club members had a fantastic day out.

Rob Hughes with Owel trout over 9lbs.

There was great excitement on Church Island at lunch time as club member Rob Hughes arrived in with a huge Owel trout just over 9lbs. Its one of the biggest trout we have featured in Angling Focus, caught on Owel and I reckon there is more savage fish in Owel.

Great pollack fshing from Donegal rock mark

Bill Ryan reports on a pollacking fishing trip to the Donegal coast…

I hiked for two hours over rugged Donegal coastline near Dawros Head, Rosbeg, Co. Donegal to find a lovely mark only 30 minutes from my car!

Pollack
#CPRsavesfish

The pollack were in a feeding frenzy throwing themselves out of the sea as they attacked my lure! One take was definitely in the air as I raised the eel out of the sea for the next cast!

#CPRsavesfish

Towards High Water the fishing went off. Best was middle two hours of rising tide. There was a big swell on the Northern side so I fished the safer and calmer South Western corner.

All fish caught were safely released thanks to this useful long handled landing net. #CPRsavesfish

I must try this mark for Wrasse.
