Smashing tench fishing at Leitrim venue

Dave Price of  reports on some Fish Tracker Fishing Guides great tench fishing in Leitrim…

20 May: Following on from a cold and wet winter me and my fishing buddy decided to take on a session of early morning Tench fishing in one of our local Leitrim lakes.

After a 5am early morning start and following on from a prebating session the previous evening we found the conditions almost perfect and me and my buddy set up our rigs. Whilst I prefer the usual quiver tip approach my mate fished the bolt rig and after introducing some loose particles it wasn’t long before we had our first indication of Tench activity with pin prick bubbles rising all around our swims !

Bonanza tench catch
Bonanza tench catch

We had our first Tench after about 30 minutes and she was a cracker around the 4lb mark, and for the next 5 hours saw 13 lovely fish landed.

Our main baits where worm & dead maggot and sweet corn tipped with a castor.

Leitrim
The biggest tench was 4.4lb

My best Tench was 4.4lb and all fish where released unharmed.

Grilse and good springers make up mixed catch in Galway

Despite the heavy rain on Monday, wonder of wonders the OPW left the weir alone and water levels remain good with 2 gates open. Conditiosn this week suited fly anglers better and fly took a better proportion of the catch, including some fine fish.

Among the anglers to score were Frenchman Jean le Moal, who had 2 grilse of 4 and 5lbs on shrimp for 2 visits during the week. Damian Crawford had a 4.5lbs grilse on shrimp, as did Peter Monahan. Fly anglers Damian Nolan and Dexter Lynas had nice springers, with Damian landing a 8.5lbs fish and Dexter taking a fine 10lbs salmon. Local man James Dunne fished shrimp and has a 9lbs fish.

Todge and Aidan Twomey from Waterford had a good day on Sunday, with Aidan landing a 5lbs grilse on fly, and Todge taking a fine 13.5lbs springer, also on fly.

John Ryan had a 4.5lbs grilse on fly, and local angler Sean O’Toole had a 5.5lbs fish on shrimp, but the fish of the week was landed by Billy Moylan from Laois, a magnificent 15lbs 3oz salmon that was taken on fly.

There appears to be a good number of fish moving in now, and with the dry spell we could see water levels drop further into good order for the fly men. The Galway grilse normally arrive in numbers around the last week of May, so prospects look good for the next few weeks.

Mayfly producing good fishing on Mask, best at southern end

Ronan Cusack reports from Lough Mask, where mayfly hatches have been localized over the past few days with the southern end of the lake producing best.

Local angler Gerry O’Brien and his son Damien enjoyed a good days sport on dry Mays in Caher Bay this week. The lads landed and returned 11 trout over the limit and returned numerous others. Noel Moran from Ballinrobe guided two visiting American anglers over the weekend and they had some fantastic sport on wets and dries in the Inishowen / Inishocht area. UK anglers Howard and Mike had a day pulling wets along the Rocky shore on Sunday last and they had 3 fish over the limit plus several undersize.

Raymond Byrnes and Mick Hutton, home on holidays from the US had a good day on Sunday on wet and dry Mays. The lads finished with 5 good fish (best 2.5lbs, all released). Joe Fitzharris guided for Alan Bennett and Adrian Blackwell from the UK on Saturday and they also had 5 (best fish 2.5lbs, all released). Ronan Baggott and Raymond Byrnes fished together on Monday and they had 6 again on wet and dry mays. Cork anglers Mick Hegarty and Tom Sweeney fished for 5 days last week and they finished with 20 trout over the limit (best fish 2lbs, all released).

Tourmakeady Angling Club held the annual European Cup from Gortmore on Saturday last. The competition is run on a 15” limit and the heaviest single fish determines the winner. There were 96 anglers competing on the day with 19 trout handed in at the weigh-in. Denis Kelleher from Ballinrobe took first place with a trout of 3.10lbs. In second position was Peter Greene from Balyhaunis with a trout of 2.12lbs and in third position was Westport man Jonathan O’Grady with a trout of 2.11lbs.

The outlook for the coming days is for very warm and settled weather, so don’t forget the factor 50..

Water and sea trout at the Owenmore Fishery

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

21 May: We have had misty rain in West Kerry since Saturday evening. The flood was rising all day yesterday and even early this morning the water was very dark but by 10 a.m. it started to clear a bit. The river is very very high for fishing but one man had three trout in one of the lower pools and said he saw a lot of fish moving.

The rain is supposed to clear this evening so it will be perfect tomorrow and the day after. There is some more rain forecast on Wednesday and that should give us fishing until at least Friday.

Turbot, plaice and dab from Donegal shores

Stefan Martin from Killybegs Mariners SAC reports on the fishing around Donegal Bay…

Sea pinks
Sea pinks

19 May: A carnival atmosphere about town with calm winds and blue sky’s and the biggest cruise ship ever to visit town on Sunday and also the Findlater all Ireland open boat competition out of Killybegs this weekend it seems to be all happening. Burst out of work and away to the shore. It was sheer bliss; high water and a calm bay. The blooming of the sea pinks always a welcome sight for the shore angler as temperatures increase and the sight of the sea birds in their nests awaiting summer.

Turbot
Turbot

Some lovely Turbot to 35cm and plenty of dogs and then a welcome visit by some of the Irish team anglers for an evening on the shore. It was great to see the pristine bait presentation as Dave reeled in a lovely 37cm dab and Barry a 40cm Plaice all released after a few pics as the sun slipped away behind the hill….bliss

Good tench fishing at Lanesborough with fish to 6lb 6oz landed

Paul Waghorne, of www.lanesboroughangling.ie, reports from Lanesborough…

19 May: Right on cue, Mrs Nature sent some Tincas to Lanesborough. On Thursday, it was myself who struck first with a seasons best of 6lb 6oz, but the following morning I drew another blank.

tench
Paul was delighted with his 6lb 6oz tench

Up above the bridge, Connor and Aiden were bagging quality Bream over 4lbs with hybrids and Rudd thrown in for good measure. An amassed weight in excess of 70lbs was reward for staying up all night.

Yesterday was more productive on the Tench Front, with Tim Collyer leading the way netting three, all over 5lbs, the best going 5lb 9oz. Clifford and Keith Morley shared at least three to 5 and a half pounds. Guess who blanked??

Despite quite a few bivvying anglers, it has been a hard start to the weekend.

Keep up to date…

Biosecurity

Due to the biosecurity risks posed by the Asian Clam populations anglers can only use the specially provided keep-nets, available both sides of the bridge – from the Daybreak Filling Station, Ballyleague and Bridie Holmes Fishing Tackle Shop, Lanesborough.
