Julian Kendrick wins Curley's Festival at Portumna

The bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is considered by many sea anglers to be one of the most exciting and sought after species caught on rod and line. This magnificent streamlined fish with its spiked dorsal fin and powerful forked tail commands the respect of shore and small boat anglers alike.

Portumna Coarse Angling Club hosted another successful festival on the Shannon at the weekend. Congratulations to Julian Kendrick for a super win. Portumna CAC reports…
The Waterways Ireland Curley’s Portumna Festival came to and end this Friday with a worthy 2018 winner Julian Kendrick of Edenderry, Co. Offaly.

30 anglers enjoyed five days of fishing on Shebeen, Stick-Ups, Rogers, Town and the Salmon Run. The week started out tough with the wind and rain but by Thursday all was forgotten with glorious sunshine to lift the spirits and rise the banter levels up a notch. Catches were good most days with highs of over 20lb, and a number of bags into the teens nearly every day. It was a very tight battle for the pay out, apart from Julian who had the match won with a day to go.

  • 1st Julian Kendrick
  • 2nd Dave Brooks
  • 3rd Arūnas Mlečka
  • 4th Steve Grogan
  • 5th Dean Cosnet
  • 6th John Deakin
  • 7th Bruce Pennell
  • 8th Peter Jones

Portumna Angling Club would like to thank all the sponsors who contributed to the €5400 prize fund shared among the Top 8, daily sections and random teams. Thanks to the lads who helped run the match, and to Oak Lodge B&B, Fins Petrol Station Boat House, Hayes Bar Ferry Inn and Curley’s Bar.
Roll on the September Festival – don’t forget to get booked in.

Not all easy, but some big pike being caught on Derg

TJ, of TJ’s angling, reports that the pike fishing is picking up on Lough Derg and from what we are seeing there are are good catches coming in from a number of areas on the lake. On April 17th there were a lot of jacks about but they finished with 6 good pike to 103cm.

Paul Bourke, Irish Fishing Tours, was also out during the week (ahead of the big competition on Lough Ree) and though there was just a small feeding window, they made the most of it chacthicn some very clean looking fish.

At the weekend TJ had some more good pike fishing with French angler Nicholas, from Bordeaux, who had another pike of 103cm.

163 pike caught at National Pike Championships Final

The results are out – Ray Collopy is new National Pike Champion.  IFPAC reports…

The 30th National Pike Championships Final was held last Saturday the 21st April 2018 on a stretch of river in Longford. The clear blue sky and hot sun that marked Saturday did not make for ideal pike fishing. In the end the 50 anglers caught some 163, but most of these were small enough fish, unsurprisingly.

pike
Fishing was tough in the bright, clear conditions. There were not many pike of this size weighed in. Rodney Gaynor had the biggest pike at 15lb 8oz

When the fish was over it was back to the Longford Arms for the awards dinner. After enjoying our excellent presentation dinner, Irish Federation of Irish Pike Angling Clubs Chairman John Chambers made a short speech thanking all involved in the organisation of the event and special thanks to our sponsor GO HIRE Limited who have sponsored the event the last couple of years.

Then €100 was presented to Patrick Foran for catching the biggest pike in the qualifying heats 18lb 08oz.

Rodney Gaynor then got €100 for the best pike in the Final 15lb 08oz. Joint second was David Walsh and Ian Church.

1st Rodney Gaynor 15lb 08oz

The winner, Ray Collopy, will captain the top 10 anglers who will be the Irish team who will fish against their British opposite numbers in Ireland over a 2 day match next October.

You will note from the above that the vast majority of pike caught were pretty small. Special presentation was made to Pat O’Grady when he was crowned king and was presented with T-shirt and crown from Eddie McGuirk. Once again we would like Eamon, Cait , Pauline and all at Longford Arms Hotel for looking after us so well.

Lovely glass trophies were also presented to each of the 11 heat winners – Dodger Smyth, Laurence Marshall, Paul Comiskey, Robbie McShane, Mark Kiernan, Jody Kiernan, Eugene McCabe, Pat O’Grady, Diarmuid Smyth, Paddy Dimbylow, Patrick Foran

We were based in The Longford Arms Hotel in Longford town. We must say that we were really looked after well by the staff and the quality of our food at the presentation dinner was second to none.

Team Rock and Roll wins Pike World Cup on Ree

This year’s Lough Ree International Pike Festival & World Cup was an unqualified success as the lake demonstrated just how inedible the quality of the its pike fishing is. The number of pike over 100cm caught during the course of the competition was so high that on the second day of fishing only pike over 104.5cm would make it into the top 10. In fact there were 21 fish over 100cm caught by the anglers that day.

Inland Fisheries Ireland launches ‘Operation Ephemera’ focused on trout anglers during the upcoming ‘Mayfly Season’

Inland Fisheries Ireland today announced the launch of a new campaign, ‘Operation Ephemera’, which is designed to alert anglers to the intensification of efforts to detect those who either take undersize trout or more trout than the rules allow.

Compliance with other relevant angling regulations and rules, including relevant permit conditions which pertain on certain lakes, will also be enforced.

Anglers found flaunting the law will receive a fixed charge penalty notice, which attracts a fine of €150 which, if remaining unpaid after 30 days, will result in prosecution.

The new campaign is specifically focused on anglers fishing for trout during the annual hatch of the mayfly and takes its name from the species name for the mayfly – Ephemera danica – which is traditionally associated with the ‘Mayfly Season’ on the prime wild brown trout limestone lakes in Ireland. It is, traditionally, the busiest time on the lakes when fish are feeding on the surface and are ‘easier’ to catch.

The lakes where the campaign will be focused will be: Loughs Corrib, Mask, Carra, Conn, Cullen and Arrow all in the West, and Loughs Sheelin, Owel, Ennell, Derravaragh and Ree in the Shannon catchment.

“Over recent years, we have been seeking the views of the angling public as to what they wanted IFI to do more of in terms of fisheries management in the coming years,” explained Greg Forde, Head of Operations at Inland Fisheries Ireland. “The theme that kept being repeated was that anglers wished to see more protection of the fisheries resource. Ultimately, there is a concern amongst anglers that not everyone on our lakes abide by the strict regulations that are in place to protect these extremely important wild brown trout and the mayfly period is when fish are most vulnerable.

“With ‘Operation Ephemera’, we are reminding anglers to familiarise themselves with the regulations pertaining to the lakes they are intending to fish and to abide by the law. We will also be highlighting the regulations and making leaflets available to anglers to help familiarise themselves with the rules.”

The campaign will be concentrated in May but with hatches being late in some areas this year, this may extend into June. It is appreciated that many anglers practice catch and release but where trout are permitted to be retained it is important that this is within the strict regulations for the respective lakes.

Anglers are also reminded that when fishing in a lake boat all passengers must wear a buoyancy aid or lifejacket.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is also asking the public to help protect and conserve the fisheries resource by reporting incidents or suspicions of illegal fishing to its confidential hotline number telephone0818 34 74 24 or 0818 FISH 24.

About Inland Fisheries Ireland

Inland Fisheries Ireland is a statutory body operating under the aegis of the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) and was established under the Fisheries Act on 1st July 2010. Its principal function is the protection and conservation of the inland fisheries resource. Inland Fisheries Ireland promotes, supports, facilitates and advises the Minister on the conservation, protection, management, development and improvement of inland fisheries, including sea angling. Inland Fisheries Ireland also develops policy and national strategies relating to inland fisheries and sea angling and advises the Minister on same.

Fisheries Protection

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is responsible for ensuring the protection and conservation of Ireland’s fisheries resource, the fish and their habitats in both inland waterways and out to a twelve mile limit off the coast from baselines. The species protected comprise all freshwater fish species including migratory species such as salmon, sea trout, eel as well as lamprey. IFI is also responsible for protecting certain molluscs including oysters and through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sea Fisheries Protection Agency enforces bass fisheries legislation.

In addition to enforcing the provisions of the Fisheries Acts 1959 to 2010, IFI is empowered to enforce the Water Pollution Acts 1977 & 1990 when discharges to fisheries sensitive locations impacts on water leading to deterioration in water quality and on occasion fish kills.

Bass, Flounder, Coalies, Dogfish and Rockling at Youghal for West Cork anglers

Terry O Donovan, West Cork and District SAC, reports on their latest match fished on the Slob bank…

21 April: It’s been a long 10 weeks since our last club comp and with the first sign of sunshine after an extra long winter, spirits were high as we drew our pegs and made the walk on the Slob.

With a big string of pots 100 yards off the bank we were forced to keep the pegs towards the town side of things. From the off the best of the fishing was up that side. JP Molloy and James Kiniry were into fish from the straight away. Joycey and Mark O Sullivan were making early gains also. Fishing at the bridge end was far from spectacular with 1 fish caught between 5 anglers in the first 2 hours.

Sod on peg 3 had everyone warned to be ready for 8.30 to arrive as he foretold a flurry of fish at that time, and true to his word at 8.31pm SOD produced his first fish of the evening!!

Another local Youghal resident was keeping a close eye on us all evening. A lovely otter cruised up and down the bank looking to help himself to any fish we had to offer.

As the last hour came JP was finding some good fish, even putting a dogfish on the card to score high points. James, Sully and Joycey also found fish.

In the end there were 32 fish caught between 9 anglers and catches were made up of Bass, Flounder, Coalie, Dogfish and Rockling.

After the tally it was JP who was the man of the night with 11 fish and he also had the biggest fish, a 36cm Flounder. A massive well done to JP.

Results

  • 1st. JP Molloy 11 fish
  • 2nd. James Kiniry 9 fish
  • 3rd. Mark O Sullivan 4 fish
  • 4th. Joycey
  • 5th. Sod
  • 6th. Terry O Donovan
  • Joint 7th. Barry, Denis and Colin.

Golden sky
Sunset over Donegal Bay

21 April: Golden sky’s for the first of the Mariners summer league outings and 14 anglers lined the beach reeling in some lovely fish coming on high water with fish being caught all along the beach. Shoals of mullets fins were breaking the calm surface and two lovely flounders of 40cm for John set the bar.
Flounder
Flounder – 40cm

A double haul for Daragh kept him in contention but in the end most points cash prize was won by John Cunningham and 2nd place prize was won by Daragh McGuinness and longest fish prize was 40cm flounder for John Cunningham.

Next event…

Tough fishing at first leg of Leinster Boat League

Wicklow Bay Sea Angling Club report that  the first leg of the Leinster boat league was fished in Kilmore Quay on Sunday (22 April). Fishing was described as tough despite what seemed to be ideal conditions with the sun shining but the fish being shy to take baits.

Pollock was the main catch with a mix of wrasse, dogs, coalies and cod making an appearance in smaller numbers. Big well done to Liam O’Callaghan taking the win today and to everyone else who turned out.

Corrib quieter as olives slow to appear

Very few reports from Corrib lately, as we have a lull between the end of the duckfly and the emergence of the main hatch of olives. Weather conditions have been cool and showery for most of the week, with fluctuating water levels, and water temperatures are only just reaching 9 degrees, well back on normal for the time of year.

A few olives and Campto buzzer are starting to appear, and hopefully this weekend will see hatches pick up and catches too. In the meantime, anglers have been pulling wet flies in cool westerly winds and not reporting many fish.

This Sunday sees the Corr na Mona Anglers host their Annual Hospice Pairs Competition, which raises funds for Galway Hospice, a very worthwhile charity, on Sunday April 29th. There will be over €2,000 in sponsored prizes on offer, with entry just €50 per angler, and all proceeds going to charity.

Enjoyable nymphing on the Nore at Mount Juliet

Dan O’Neill at the Mount Juliet Estate reports on the trout fishing on the Nore…

We had 4 anglers on the fishery on Saturday. We had decent water with the meter reading 92. Despite the improvement in the weather there were no hatches about and all the fish taken were caught on nymph.

The tally at the end of their session was 12 trout and 15 salmon smolts.

With the smolts running its important do everything you can to get these guys off to sea in good shape, so fishing barbless makes sense until the run is over. It important to make sure you wet hour hands if you have handle them during the release as they are delicate little fellows and you want to avoid any scale loss.
