Irish Angling Update 8 August 2025

Well the typical Irish summer has returned, we even had a visit from Storm Floris earlier in the week which brought wet and windy conditions to the west and northwest. It’s been a mixed bag since, with breezy overcast conditions and a few showers, although rainfall amounts have not been excessive. Thankfully for anglers, it means lower water temperatures on our rivers and lakes.

We start with sea angling, and despite an interrupted week with a lot of wind, we have plenty of reports. Guests on the Brazen Hussy II have enjoyed great sport in Galway Bay over the last couple of weeks, with the highlight being some fantastic specimen spurdog fishing.

Spurs galore

Mackerel are usually a welcome catch, but not in a competition where they don’t count and are snaffling all the baits before the target species can get to them! And that is hat befell the Ulster Krakens club at Fahan, Co. Donegal, where mackerel proved a problem until Raymond McCann picked up a few late counting fish to take the win. A rare enough John Dory for Dean Boardman was the highlight in the Séan McGettigan Memorial Cup sea angling tournament from Portsalon, Co. Donegal, where Mark Cassidy took the honours.

Triggerfish are an increasingly common catch now in Ireland, but ore commonly caught on reef or rocky deep shorelines than a beach, but Rob Shirley had a nice surprise when he landed one at a beach in south Wexford recently. Richie Ryan reports great sport on fly in Cork Harbour, where bass, pollack and mullet to specimen size have been the order of the day.

Matthew Carmichael with a fine Cork mullet on fly.

Jim Clohessy fished a bit further out from Cork, and had blue shark all round the boat, with quite a few landed on his first shark trip of the year. Further west, David Ridgen on the Sheeps Head peninsula reports on some fantastic mullet fishing during July on his great blog.

Trout angling reports are scarce of late, but reports are that Lough Corrib has fishwed well throughout July. Larry Kelly and long time fishing partner John Jack had a great 6 days on the lough, with 27 fish between them averaging nearly 2lbs. The best fish was a fine trout of 5lbs, with another fish of similar size lost at the net the following day.

Salmon angling reports are sparse this week. Low water meant low angling effort on the River Moy, where catches were spread all along the river, but the best fishing was around Ballina. A couple of salmon were reported from the Laune, while on the Blackwater, low water levels hampered fishing. A lot of salmon were observed in the river, proving hard to tempt, but some beats above Lismore reported better fishing over the past 2 weeks.

To coarse fishing now, and Skeagh Lough has been producing good bags for match anglers. Brenton Sweeney took the honours in a CM Lakelands club match there, with a mixed bag of decent skimmers, hybrids and some small roach. Brenton had a weight of 14.025kg and caught 130 fish. Some quality bream showed in the River Shannon at Athlone, where Gary Rogers obliterated the field with 23kg on the second day to take the  MADCAPS Athlone Riverfest 2-day match

Waterways Ireland have improved water levels on the canal at Edenderry, and club anglers found the extra water a big help in their club match, where despite bright sunshine and clear water, some great bags were recorded; Dean Murray taking the win with a fine bag over 20lbs.

Just the one pike report this week, but it’s a good one. Young angler Luke Kearns had a trip to the Shannon for some coarse fishing, but pike were taking hooked fish in his swim on day 1, so day 2 saw him ready with a pike rod; he fished hard with lures and wobbled deadbaits. Just before midday, a good pike smashed the wobbled roach and, after a thrilling fight, the guys netted a super 10.25lb pike – Luke’s best fish yet. A PB, and our Catch of the Week.

And now the weather

Today (Friday) sunny spells will develop as the day goes on. Later this evening, cloud will begin to build from the northwest with any showers becoming isolated. Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees, in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, strongest in northern areas.

A band of rain will spread southeastwards from the north on Saturday morning, clearing the south coast by early afternoon. Sunny spells will follow from the north with just a few scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees in mostly moderate westerly breezes, a little fresher near the north coast.  Sunday will see sunny spells to begin especially in the north and east. However, cloud will push up from the southwest during the day, bringing some patchy rain. Highest temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees, and becoming humid in moderate south to southwesterly breezes.

The early days of next week look warm and humid with temperatures generally in the low to mid-twenties in light southerly winds. While there will be good spells of sunshine, some heavy or thundery downpours may occur in parts too.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Spurs, shark and plenty more in Galway Bay

    Spurs galore

Skipper John Fleming reports some great fishing at times over the last couple of weeks. Although the shark fishing has been hit-and-miss, there have been some good days with a number of porbeagles brought to the boat, some firsts and PBs for anglers, and plenty of craic.

A couple of shark trips were not possible due to weather offshore, particularly with the arrival of Storm Floris, but on the plus side the spurdog fishing was absolutely astounding for one group who had booked a shark trip. With the shark not playing ball, a move to spurdog ground for the last hour or two saw hectic action, John says they lost count of the spurs, with a good three quarters of the fish probably specimen size, if they hadn’t been too busy catching to measure them!

There has also been excellent mixed species fishing, with plenty of good pollack, coalies, wrasse and many more.

Great saltwater flyfishing in Cork Harbour

Matthew Carmichael with a fine Cork mullet on fly.

Cork Harbour bass guide Richie Ryan was in touch with a great report on fishing this week…

The famous Fly Fishing enthusiast Dr Jacques Bronkhorst yet again had visitors from South Africa this week. Trevor Travis and his son Matthew Carmichael fished for a full week with Jacques and had excellent fishing as can be seen from the photographs. Large numbers of small Bass were landed on both boats over the period. The pair  loved the very underrated Pollack on the Fly here in Ireland. My famous Carlow expression “dunkies” ( sic )  of Pollack was used repeatedly during the sessions.

Trevor and Matthew Carmichael joined me also for a day’s guided fishing. Matthew was guiding in Alaska last year and now guides near the Seychelles. His expertise was evident from the outset. Trevor , an expert angler,  obviously tutored his son on the finer points of fly fishing, great to see the passion being passed on. Whilst  fishing  for Bass on the Fly, Matthew hooked a huge thick lipped Mullet which was definitely close or above specimen size , see photo below. To see the rod bent over and the adept control of the rod as this monstrous mullet dived for the bottom was a sight to behold !

It was indeed a great pleasure to have father and son  aboard Sea Hawk for a very entertaining and enjoyable days fishing. They have promised to return again to Ireland for our excellent saltwater fly fishing.

Skeagh fishing well for match anglers

Another club match for CM Lakelands over the weekend on a perfect day for fishing at Skeagh Lough. First overall was Irish Feeder Team boss Brenton Sweeney, with a mixed bag of decent skimmers, hybrids and some small roach. Brenton had a weight of 14.025kg and caught 130 fish from peg 3.
Second overall today and just 25 grammes behind Brenton was Rimantas Kondrackas from peg 10 with 14.000kg. Rimantas had well over 200 fish with a lot of roach, hybrids and odd skimmers.
Third overall was Robertas Zilaitis with another mixed bag of fish to weigh 13.325kg and last in the money was the ever improving Pavel Tkachenko who had 220 small fish in close to weigh 11.775kg.
Well done to everyone, it was a great match with plenty of fish. Nearly all the club members used VDE Groundbaits and Additives.

scenic shot of river and bridge
    The Blackwater, April 2021

Water levels are reported to be low on the Blackwater, but some beats upstream of Lismore have experienced an improvement in catch over the past two weeks. Reports are of a lot of salmon in the system, but they are not really taking. As we enter the last month of the open fishery, a lot more activity has been observed in the catchment, as anglers try to catch the elusive quarry before the September Catch & Release fishery is upon us. Sea trout encounters have also increased on the main channel, and there are also some reports of fish in the tributaries.

The past week was drier than normal nationwide, with rainfall totals generally between 40% and 80% of the average. The weather over the coming week will be mixed with rain or showers, though there will be long dry intervals also.

Gary Rogers wins Athlone 2-dayer with 27kg

Gary Rogers put in a blinding session on day two of the MADCAPS Athlone Riverfest match at the weekend. Having netted 4kg on day 1, he proceeded to obliterate the field with a super bag of 23kg+ to take the win at a canter.

Some fine bream helped Gary to the win

It’s great to see some quality bream in the River Shannon and there were a few good slabs spread amongst the anglers along with some nice-looking tench.

2nd overall was Dara Finnegan with over 14 kilo

First shark trip of the year for Jim Clohessy

Well-known angler Jim Clohessy took his first run at shark this year and it turned out to be an interesting trip. They had their first shark minutes into the first drift, but then the drift got messed up by some strong wind vs. tide action and the bites dried up.

But, as the day wemt on, the wind picked up and they got onto a consistent drift and suddenly there were shark all around the boat.

They picked up a few good fish, but many of the fish seemed more interested in the motor than the baits. See Jim’s Facebook Page for a full report and plenty of footage.
