Pike from shore when boats can't can't get out in Longford area

Fishing from the bank due to bad weather for J.P
Fishing from the bank due to bad weather for J.P

Jean-Pierre from Belgium who is a regular at Melview Fishing Lodge was over for another week’s pike fishing recently.  Things started a bit slow due to the poor conditions. Bad weather along with very high winds made it a little dangerous to use a boat so they made do with fishing from the shore.
Kevin told us he had the pleasure of fishing with J.P. four out of his six days fishing. When they did venture out on the boat they were able to locate a great deal of bait fish and had hopes it could be a great day, however after a few hours fishing they only had a couple of fish and managed to lose two more. Water temperatures and weather conditions were not the best for feeding fish and Kevin put the lack of success down to this.

When weather deteriorated further they were forced to fish from the bank. This proved to be more productive for J.P who landed a few good fish into double figures but the less said about the ones he lost the better – isn’t that right J.P.?
J.P. is due back in June and September so Kevin is hoping the weather will be a little kinder to him.
All fish returned unharmed.

‘Nobody wants salmon farm in Bantry Bay’, local resident tells appeal board

Tourism interests, local fishermen and environmental acitivists were out in force recently when a licence for a major salmon farm off Shot Head in Bantry Bay was discussed, writes Brian Moore. MARINE Harvest Ireland’s bid to position a new 18-cage salmon farm just off Shot Head in Bantry Bay has been met with both local and national objections since 2012. While a licence was awarded to the company to place the cages – which could accommodate up to one million fish – at Shot Head, an appeal to the Aquaculture Licences Appeal Board (ALAB) was launched by 14 different organisations, groups and individuals, who say that the new salmon farm will cause environmental, economic and social damage to Bantry Bay…

Poor weather on Corrib but fishing reasonable

Declan Gibbon from our Galway office reports that the week gone by saw less angling activity due to inclement weather conditions. Hopefully the drop in temperature won’t affect the duckfly hatches that shouldn’t be too far away .

On Saturday last Gerry Molloy ( loughcorriboughterard.com ) enjoyed a few hours fishing. He had good success on the brickeen landing four trout with the best being two and a quarter pounds. Gerry also enjoyed a few hours on Sunday afternoon landing two trout. Staying in the Oughterard area Kevin Molloy (087-9604170) reports of reasonably good fishing on the brickeen landing ten fish for three half days with the best fish being two and a half pounds.

New data to be used to target farms polluting rivers and lakes

Agriculture has been identified as a significant pressure in 729 (64%) river and lake water bodies that are At Risk of not meeting their environmental objective. That’s according to figures detailed in the River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) for Ireland 2018-2021 published today and which is now subject to public consultation for six months. The Impacts from Agriculture are evident in all catchments but are most prevalent in the eastern half of the country…

High tides, sea trout and salmon expected to run Laune

What 3.5 Feet on the gauge at Johnston's looks like.

Billy Downes reports from the River Laune in Kerry where high water and high tides are expected to produce a fish soon…

As of  the last day of February the Laune is just over 1.8m – a bit on the high side but no doubt, with this water and the high tides there will be a few fish running.  Now that March is almost here we can expect a few good spring sea trout to be showing up also and may be a surer bet that a salmon.

Good Shannon piking reported from Banagher area

Lovely Shannon pike caught and carefully released by John Burns.
Lovely Shannon pike caught and carefully released by John Burns.

John Burns, a native of Killaloe in County Clare took a trip up river to fish in the Banagher area earlier in the month. Ledgering a dead bait (mackerel) produced 5 pike for John 5 pike. The best of these was a fine double figure fish and the only one over 10bls. The rest were jacks and small hens between 3 and 9lbs. All on dead baits on a cold day when the river was rising from the rain.

Stefan Martin from Killybegs Mariners SAC reports (in a style James Joyce would be proud of) on the fishing around Donegal Bay …

Sea trut running the surf were gorging on sandeel
Sea trout running the surf were gorging on sandeel

27/02 Wild seas roaring today in Donegal big rolling barrels crashing in and we got a corner with a bit of shelter under a hill and cast out and the rods were jumping on the tripods straight away, it soon became apparent that a big shoal of seatrout were in the surf as John even took in a treble of trout in one cast and had 9 trout in 5 casts of trout jumping clear of the water and swimming fast through the big waves. They were regurgitating small sandeels while unhooking and we had to throw the trout back for release as the big surf was dangerous at times to get too close too, a raw day with plenty of fish on the wild Atlantic way perfect.

Off she goes...

01/03 March 1st the meteorological 1st day of spring and it was a gentle day in Donegal with sunshine and showers usual mix with lots of rain coming down through the mountains making the water a murky brown, no day for lures, but some nice fish landed and released again after some difficulty getting the trout to stay still for a quick pic he shot off at speed again and flounder to 37cm made for a pleasant few hours on the shores

Swords’ Hidden Gem, North County Leader

Swords’ Hidden Gem
Swords’ Hidden Gem

A lake, which has remained largely undiscovered within the Ward River Valley estate, is set to become arguably the most significant coarse fishery in the North County. This hidden gem, known locally as Usher’s Lake is located deep within the wooded area of the estate, adjacent to Swords Manor and Knocksedan estates. The lake and surrounding area is now in the ownership of the County Council and it is destined to play a major role in the local authority’s plans…

ESB Club lights up its day with trip to Courtlough

Noel Caffrey reports on the ESB Angling Club outing at Courtlough fishery on Sat Feburary 25th

A nice fish from Courtlough
A nice fish from Courtlough

The latest ESB Angling Club outing was a coaching day, to iron out some of the bad habits of the experienced anglers and introduce a number of novices to fly fishing followed by a session on the lake to put all the learnings into practice.  Garrett Ruigrok took the members through the science and basics of casting, followed by sessions on rigs and explanations of the type of flies to use.

Casting instruction – the nest step

Sandwiched between storms Doris and Ewan, the fishing was never going to be easy or comfortable, but almost all caught on the day, and certainly all enjoyed and benefited from the day.  A total of 45 Rainbows and 15 Brownies were caught.  Rainbows to 7lb + were caught, with some much bigger lost.  Brownies to 3lb + were caught.  All fish were in great condition and all were returned to fight another day.   The bigger fish came to blobs and buzzers, damsel type lures worked very well too.

A great day out, and many thanks to the expertise, attention and hospitality of Garrett.
