Angling Guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports on better trout fishing on Lough Lene near Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.
IT’S ALL OVER NOW.
Lene closed with a bang last Sunday, and up on eighty anglers fished the Chairman’s competition, with proceeds going to Alzheimer Society of Ireland. It was a choppy day on Lene but some cracking fish were caught, and the Lake is closed for trout fishing till March 1st 2013.The annual Pairs competition was won by John O, Neill of Enfield and his angling pal Gary Coakley of Dublin. The deadly duo rattled the scales with a fine rainbow of 1.96 kg. Freddie Miller and Noel Shields finished 2nd with a brown trout of 1.32, and John Maguire and Morris Little 3rd with 1.20kg.Chairman Tom Fagan thanked all who fished the competition and especially all the sponsors who provided great prizes.
CORKERS FROM LENE.
Earlier in the week I spent a few days on Lene before the trout season closed. Former Castlepollard and Mullingar lad Niall O’ Loughlin dropped in from Cork and had a cracking day boating 4 super Trout. I also bumped into Ginnell Terrace Angler Niall Oakes, who was drifting across Lene with canine pal Sam. I took a long shot of Niall and a super brown trout, and really pushed the Nikon lens to the limit for this one. I also received a beautiful photo this week of Kinnegad Angler Eddie Darby and Grandson Dennis chilling out on Lene.
CHRISTY SLEATOR CUP.
Kenny Kiernan won the Christy Sleator Cup last Sunday on Lene. The Mullingar lad boated a fish of 1.80lb. to take Top Rod, 2nd place was competition captain John Tyrrell with 1.76 lb., and Noel Farrar 3rd with 0.09lb. Unfortunally I missed the competition and presentation of prizes as I was on Lene for the last day. John Brennan was crowned top Ennell Angler of 2012, and received the Tyrrells/McKeever .
