Joe Keena, PRO for ITFFA tells us:

The Stonehall and Knockeyne brown trout competitions were fished by Lough Derravaragh Anglers on 7th October and as usual this competition was held in conjunction with the Lakelands Trout Competition. Liam Gilsenan won the Knockeyne Cup with a trout of 1¼lb whilst the Stonehall Cup went to Christy Cox with a trout of just under 1lb.  Nine anglers entered and while angling conditions were very poor with little or no wind; they did improve in the afternoon with a light south-east wind and good cloud cover. Things seem to be improving a little on Derravaragh with competition results much improved on previous years. Anglers are reporting good numbers of small trout feeding and being returned to the water alive.

Derravaragh Anglers recently completed a stream enhancement project on the Yellow River system in conjunction with Inland Fisheries Ireland. This project was part funded by the club and part funded by Westmeath Community Development under the Leader program. It is hoped that this enhancement work will lead to an improvement in wild trout numbers within the Derravaragh system. On 7th October the club held its annual fundraising draw to help with this stream enhancement work. Lough Derravaragh Anglers would like to extend their gratitude to everybody who sold tickets, bought tickets and provided sponsorship.

There have been a number of incidents of illegal fishing on Derravaragh so far in 2012 with fyke net being removed from the lake by Inland Fisheries Ireland and illegal set lines being found in the Derravaragh tributaries. Lough Derravaragh Anglers are asking anglers to assist in the recovery of the lake by reporting illegal fishing activity to Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Derravaragh Anglers will hold the Murtagh Pike Competition on 28th October 2012. The competition will commence at 11AM with presentation of prizes taking place at Murtagh’s Public House, Multyfarnham. We look forward to seeing you there!”
