From Red Bay in Co. Antrim, Hamish Currie reports:

Weather can be cruel at times but I suppose we cant complain as we had most of our offshore trips this season.  Sharking grounds are very difficult to get to at this time of the year for us and with the European anglers finished for the year its hard to convince the anglers up here to spend money and go hunting them.  As with all charter skippers fuel is fast becoming a big problem and as far as I am concerned the anglers up here don’t or can’t afford to spend the money for the extra fuel to take us to these destinations as we can cover up to 170km a day shark hunting.

I have already taken charge of a new boat for the 2014 season and will spend the coming months getting her ready to my and the MCA specifications where 2, 3 and 4 day offshore trips will be on offer as I want to do different things and slow things down and look forward to enjoying my new boat.

Fishing up here inshore is still productive and I am just waiting for the herring to arrive.   With the usual predators in pursuit the largest fish onboard the  Predator.  This season saw a lovely porbeagle shark taken by Joe Mulholland from Dundalk at 370lbs taken on a 2 day trip.  Clients like Joe are hard to come by up here,  so I look forward to seeing him again next season  Tope are still about at the moment so we will see how long they hang about for.
