John Quinlan reports on the shore angling around Cahersiveen…

The bass closed season is now upon us.  I have to say it wasn’t the easiest spring at Thatch Cottage Fishing Lodge so I’m really looking forward to some proper ‘summer’ bass fishing from mid-June onwards.  We still have mullet and pollock to target in the sea and some freshwater options available.

Local expert Chris Nealms and I finished off the season with a few nice bass from the beach on the night of the 13th.  We planned to go out on the 14th but the wind and hailstones beating off the house windows made us think better of it.

Barry Thomas and his friend John joined us for a week’s fishing.  They enjoyed a nice mixed bag of fishing catching sea trout in fresh and saltwater, plenty brown trout up to 1.5lbs, mullet on fly to around 3.5lbs and bass of 4lbs.  Everything was caught on fly which was quite an achievement given the weather conditions during the week.

Their best sea trout was from Lough Derriana at around 2.5lbs.  Barry almost made  the grand slam when he raised a fine spring salmon on the river but unfortunately it didn’t hit the fly properly.
