While salmon fishing on Lough Leane, Killarney, Co. Kerry last week, Kevin Donnelly, from Cork, caught a superb 8.5lbs ferox trout. Not the targeted species but a very welcome surprise in difficult conditions.

Kevin tells us how this fine fish was caught:

The weather was fairly rough and I had blanked the week before while fishing with a friend – but with a rise in water levels and the hopes of more salmon in the system in the days after the first visit, I thought I’d give it a go myself. I was trolling a Fire Tiger Rapalla in only 9ft of water when ‘Bang!’ the rod buckled – and I thought to myself, salmon on Kevin!!!

At first I thought it was a red fish but as it came to the net, I realised it was a ferox! I had heard of them in the lake before but never had the privilege of landing one. It turned out to be the only fish of the day – but I still drove home to Cork with a big smile on my face!
