Weather windows provide good fishing in Galway Bay

Skipper John Fleming reports that the weather has been most unhelpful of late, but when a weather window has presented itself, the fishing opportunities have been very productive. Even forced to stay inshore and fish the north shore reefs, they found “plenty of mackerel for the pan, and more pollack than we have ever gotten in that area. The ground was thick with sandeel and the pollock were in a frenzy. Even found this lovely little cod, very rare on the north shore.”

John has limited midweek availabilty for June, but with some settled weather hopefully on the way, its worth giving him a shout. Tope fishing is getting started, and he will be starting porbeagle shark trips shortly.

A regular day is between 9am- 6pm from either Rossaveal, Spiddal or Galway depending on species being sought after. Fishing on the inshore reefs for pollock, cod, ling, wrasse, conger eel and mackerel can be reached in 10 minutes from departure, while our offshore reef marks are within 45 minutes of departure. Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing.
The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and released safely.

Piscari-Fly Newsletter: River Nore Update, Father’s Day & Championships Galore

The Piscari-Fly team are back with their latest newsletter with news of what’s going on around the country:

How’s the Fishing?

With a recent bit of rainfall, the Nore came up a couple of inches and the fishing had been good and steady during the day. Peter and Mark were out Sunday for a few hours, they had a good session. The best nymph for Peter was his Hare’s Ear Nymph tied on a Hanak RS hooks and Piscari Tungsten beads.

Mark was working some Pheasant Tails and bits and pieces and the boys picked up some good fish, actuallyt plenty of them and it was good fishing. However, it was cold and temperatures really have dropped, there was a slight breeze on the river and it made it not so typical June fishing. But the fishing was good.

Ricky and his dad Dick Croke were out on Sunday night and they were saying it was some of the best fishing they have had on the Nore in a few years. It was completely on fire, with fabulous quallity fish showing for the dries. So if you’re around about over the next wee while, call into us here for permits and recommendations on locations, get out there and enjoy some good fishing while its there. When we have this mixed weather and there is some water in the river the fishing is good. Great to hear that the river is fishing well.

A good friend of ours down in Cork was out testing some of our saltwater fly patterns and picked up this nice bass. Well done to Ollie, it’s a cracker of a fish on the fly. He picked it up on a Chartreuse Flatwing. Fab to see some nice fish being caught on the coast.

Recap of the Worlds Fly Fishing Championship

So in the end it turned out to be a good result for Team Ireland although we had some early unlucky draws which didn’t help their cause. But the boys finished strong and won the final day overall, which is not a very common thing for an Irish team. Great to see the boys competing at that level and showing the calibre of angler that we have here in Ireland can compete at that level. Everything has to click all the time at this level over the entire competition and the boys performed brilliantly. Great to see the boys finishing strong and getting up to a 10th place finish. So well done to Team Ireland and well done to all the medal winners and organisers for hosting the event.

The boys are planning a trip in August to do a recon on the area and get familiar with it, and the styles of rivers there. Then the championship take places in October on four river sessions and 1 lake.

Make sure you check out Piscari-Fly Club as Peter is about to start a whole “Road to Italy” series, where he will take the club members through every aspect of preparing for a championship, getting the gear together, tying the flies and just in general what he is expecting. So if you are a subscriber make sure you check that out. It will start this weekend coming, where Peter will be doing some stuff to get ready.

The Royal Enfield Coarse Angling Club held their annual 2-day competition on the Royal Canal at Longwood and Blackshade over the weekend of 7/8 June. It was a well-attended event, with 35 anglers from Ireland and the UK competing for the circa €3000 prize fund.

Judging from the photos, there were a few nice bream knocking about, and also plenty of tench, which you would expect at this time of year. Visiting angler John Easton came away with the top prize with a bag of over 22lb, well ahead of Conor Browne in second place with 16 lb+.

Weed hampers fishing at latest Ulster Krakens outing

The following report is taken with courtesy from the Ulster Krakens SAC Facebook Page:
Ulster Krakens – Master Angler League Qualifier Leg 6 Report
Saturday, 7th June saw the Krakens head to Waterfoot Beach for the 6th leg of their master angler qualifier match. Fishing was from 7pm-12am on a filling tide, over the top, and down. The weather had been forecasted for rainy showers and a brisk NW wind with wind gusts of around 23mph.
6pm approached with the beach pegged at the flat roof (even though the flat roof house is no longer). The beach looked in good shape, the only thing that stood out was that the may bloom seemed to be thick in tight. With the pegs drawn, off we went. I’m not sure many of the boys fancied this one to be honest. Whispers in the car park before we headed down began with dogs, dogs, dogs…
For the second match in a row, Craig and Raymond were pegged beside each other, David drew the end peg up towards the play park. 7pm came around quickly and first casts went in, Raymond got off to a flyer with a treble shot on his first cast however things slowed down very quickly with the odd fish being landed, you could hear the groans down the beach with the weed playing havoc with baits being masked within minutes of being in the water.

A nice wee turbot

Gavin was winning the award for most species on the night with 5, Bert on peg 2 battled away to find a couple of counting fish, Ally on peg 1 was getting a few fish early on, but the fish seemed to switch off in front of him as the match progressed. Andy on peg 5 was going strongly, also with whispers of 6 fish at the midway point. Stephen Kinning in true fashion, kept plugging away on peg 6. Neil was quietly getting fish on the card, too. As darkness approached, everybody’s attention turned to dogs. Craig had been going for them since early with no success; however, Raymond’s first cast produced a dog… Craig could be heard down the beach, not sounding too happy.
🤣
In the end, it wasn’t grea,t but there were a few fish and good banter on the night.
At the halfway point, David Rainey is leading the flat fish of the year award, and Stephen McGarrell is leading the race for the biggest round fish of the year.
Species caught were: flounder, dab, turbot, weaver, whiting, poor cod and dogfish.

Results as follows:
1st Raymond “fish whisper” McCann 14 counters +5 unders for 451 points
2nd David Rainey 9 fish for 341 points
3rd Stephen Kinning 8 counters +unders for 222 points
4th Craig Henderson 7 counters +2 unders 219 points
5th Andrew Mc Callion 8 counters + 1 under for 188 points
Biggest Fish on the night was Raymond with a 23cm flounder
Apologies for the lack of photos. It wasn’t a night to be taken pictures!
