Henry O'Maille had his first salmon

Colin Folan from Lough Inagh Lodge Hotel reports that

17 August: At time of writing the water levels are rising rapidly.  The lake has started to come on a bit for sea trout, as Cork angler Don O’Leary fished it for his first time last evening and landed 6 nice fish on wets.  Michael Heery and his party of 3 fished Inagh last week for 3 sessions and boated 20 Sea Trout to 2.75lbs and also had a pair of grilse.

First time fly fisherman Henry O’Maille,Galway, fished The Derryclare Butts for a morning with his father Padraic, and landed a nice fresh Grilse of 5lbs on a cascade.

So far in 16 days of August the books have recorded 98 sea trout, 25 browns and 7 salmon with not much rod effort to be honest.

September is usually a good period on the fishery and the spaces are filling up quickly especially on Lough Inagh so booking is essential.

Loughs Derryclare and Inagh lie in the lovely Inagh Valley with the Twelve Pins (Bens) of Connemara rising steeply to the west, and the Maumturk Mountain range to the east. There are two short connecting rivers, which contain four river beats. The fishery has spring salmon, grilse, sea trout and large indigenous brown trout. In recent years the fishery has seen a resurgence of fish numbers, and in 2010 – 2012, the fishery has produced Salmon to 15lbs, Sea Trout to 5lbs and Brown Trout to 12lbs.

In the last week fishermen out from Bellavista Angling Centre in Cobh have had 3 porbeagle sharks amongst the wide range of species caught.

Amongst the lucky anglers were three generations of the Van Lepren family. Grandfather Henk fished with his son Herald and grandson Bas. They had plenty of exciting catches including angry congers and bristling bass, but their highlight was porbeagle on Saturday.

Ilen fishing well and Coomhola worth a throw

Eileen Carroll gives a round up of the salmon fishing in West Cork…

RIVER ILEN

During the past three weeks 50 fish were landed on the River Ilen mostly small, except for an 11lb salmon caught by Alan Cassidy on a Flying C

RIVER MEALAGH

No report.

OUVANE RIVER

During the past three weeks 6 fish were landed on the Ouvane, best was 8lbs by a local angler on flying C.

COOMHOLA RIVER

The Coomhola River is full of fish but no feedback on catches.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Salmon fishing poor on the Bandon last week

Reporting from Macroom, Eileen Carroll tells us that the salmon fishing remained poor on the Bandon last week with the low water conditions continuing.  There are plenty of fish in the pools but remain reluctant to take. A flood is badly needed to freshen things up.

That’s not to say there were no fish caught. Celebrity angler Keith Barry was out with Noel Kavanagh and Brian from Watercourse Angling and had 2 salmon , one 3lbs, the other 6 lbs.

Peter Aspinwall is excited for the next 8 weeks of his fishing season, a period he consider to be the absolute highlight of the anging year…

These spring tides are the start of “Proper bass fishing” for me and the eight weeks after them. I had a good afternoon’s fishing out in the bay with John Lunn and his son Conall. No whoppers but plenty of action.

Lough Ree pike in blazing sunshine

Pike
Paul Dempsey enjoying the fishing on Lough Ree

Trim angler Paul Dempsey boated a personal best pike on Lough Ree in the blazing sunshine this Tuesday. Caught on trolled dead bait. This wiley fish fought hard and embedded itself in thick weed on more than one occasion. Thankfully Paul was up to the challenge and boated this stunning creature. A quick photo and he was safely released, none the worse for his encounter. Paul however, needed some time to collect himself.

Great day for the ladies at Straid Fishery as part of FLOW

Participants enjoyed fishing at FLOW Introduction to Fly Fishing for women at Straid Fishery, Ballyclare on August 14th.

This 20 acre lake, was perfect for participants who benefited from the presence of some of the 2016 International Ladies Fly Fishing Team being on hand to guide.

Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Assoc - FLOWAnother day will be hosted by the Lagan River Trust

Introduction to Fly Fishing for Women on Saturday 20th. August 2016 from 9.30 am to 4 pm at Fullerton Park, Dunmurry

As a part of Irish Ladies Fly-Fishing Association outreach program to encourage more people to enjoy the river in active and sustainable ways Lagan Rivers Trust is offering a day of introduction to the basics of fly fishing, specially for women. The ILFFA tell us:
We have accredited coaches, representatives from the Ladies national fly fishing team, and the equipment. We also do lunch!
Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Assoc - August 14th pic 6The gentle art of Fly fishing is a very broad topic, with thousands of books and videos about it, and a long history. It is often seen as male dominated, but should not be, as the record books have many ladies listed. Nor is it a sport where great strength is required; just skill and patience.
The aim of this one day event is to offer a taste of the sport to people who may not otherwise have the opportunity, or feel inhibited or shy.
You will not leave this class as an expert, but we hope you will have fun.
You will not catch a fish on this day, but you should leave with the ability and understanding of the basics of fly fishing, enabling you to catch a fish on your own.
We hope you will meet some new friends to go fishing with. Depending on the support and interest there may be some extra goodies and the opportunity to fish as a group (or groups) on another day.
There will be no worms, maggots or other slimy, smelly things, but you will get a close up look at some of the things which live in the water.

The Very Basics and the reasons “why”
The social side
Equipment
The “bugs” and water cycle of life, including a kick sample if time permits
Fly tying; representing the bugs on a hook
Watercraft
The mechanics of casting
Casting techniques and methods
Casting practice and coaching

Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Assoc - August 14th pic 3You should bring a waterproof coat and wellies or walking boots, as the casting is all outside on grass. We may also be along the river. A hat or cap and glasses or sunglasses will be needed too.

There will be no charge for the day, but some support for the Trust (a registered charity) as a member would be welcome if you feel it is justified.
