Newcomers liven up the residents and give anglers a battle to look forward to

Waterford City and County Trout Angling Association PRO David Tantrum gives us some dates to pencil into our diaries and reports on how the excellent Waterford fisheries are doing after their Winter restocking:

Both Knockaderry and Carrigavantry have been stocked with rainbows to liven up the residents for the late season fishing. Carrigavantry has fished exceptionally well with fish on the surface. Knockaderry has suffered from poor water clarity, normal at this time of year, but it has not prevented the fish responding to a deeper fished fly.

Sunday saw a lovely 65cms long rainbow caught at Carrigavantry which was estimated to weigh 7 lbs.

Dates to look forward to….

    • The Dick Doyle Competition is on Carrigavantry on Sept 27th and is for club members only.
    • The Munster Bank Competition is at Carrigavantry on Saturday 17th Oct.
    • The Knockaderry Cup is on the holiday weekend of the 24th and 25th and the final on the Monday 26th Oct.

Details will be posted well before the two open competitions. We have days available for club and corporate outings. Details from Michael Sheehan 086 1073086, who will front our stand at the Galway Fly Fishing Fair and our members will be only to pleased to answer your queries.

Thanks to the quality fish we bought from Andrew Golden at Roscrea we should have an average weight of around three pounds for the “off season”.

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore. The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!

Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.

New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

Rainbows on a variety of sedges and buzzers for anglers at Cashel Trout Fishery

D Reilly & M Loughlin
D Reilly & M Loughlin

Marlene Mc Laughlin reports from Cashel Trout Fishery :

Beautiful autumnal weather on the way and anglers are in their element catching big fighting rainbow and trying their best to lure them to the bank.

Derry’s Brian and Ciaran Kelly bagged two for home which weighed a total of 8lb 5ozs while Limavady’s Ken Foster released eight and lost at least five more which fell to his hedgehog pattern. Eddie Manthorpe (Coleraine) and Peter Clarke (Portstewart) released six between them with Peter taking the majority which fell to gold head pheasant tails and buzzers.

Donegal’s Shaun O’Doherty released two after an unsettled start using a wee dry and a wee buzzer. Maghera’s Declan Bradley accompanied by his friend Eunan Mc Aleese bagged three each for home weighing a total of 9lb 9ozs. They also released one more after the bag limit was killed. These two anglers were using sedges and nymphs. Jim Russell and Danny Walker (Newtownabbey and Monkstown) did extremely well also banking eleven magnificent trout between them averaging 2.5lb apiece which fell to the Kate McLaren wet fly and wee sedges. Newcomer, Davy Smyth (Desert martin) accompanied by his mate Jonathan Selfridge (Maghera) landed themselves two real beauties for home weighing 4lb each which fell to klinkhammers and an orange blob.

Congratulations to all and tightlines!!

Some nice fresh fish on the Munster Blackwater

Glenda with her nice fresh fish
Glenda with her nice fresh fish

All the news from the Munster Blackwater……..

Fort William….

Paul Whelan reports for Fort William Lodge:

Kevin Shone had a 5.5lb fish off the Bishops beat. Gerry Barker had a fish of 5lbs of the Ellis beat and safely returned and lost another.
Keith Shearing guided by Chris Coady has landed and released 2 fish of 7lbs each. Chris landed a 5lbs fresh fish off the Castle beat.
Another cracking fish lost on the Castle beat, fish jumped and broke the line. 16lbs ++. Plenty of water there for a fish of this size to travel through lower beats.
Fishing hasn’t been easy in the last few days so maybe this is the start we needed.

Blackwater Lodge…..

Glenda Powell enjoyed the fishing Sunday on the river and caught a lovely little fish which came to a micro treble fly in the afternoon.  A quick snap of Glenda and the fish and back it went safely.

A few bass to 72cm from around Clonakilty

bass
The best bass of the day 72cm and fat enough to make specimen weight

Peter Aspinwall reports on the bass fishing around Clonakilty…

bass
The best bass of the day 72cm and fat enough to make specimen weight

05 September: Six hours fishing yesterday was uneventful to say the least. Seven small Pollock and two mackerel. I came home and called my client for this morning, Ray Martin, to let him know that the fishing wasn’t great. His attitude was superb and was well up for the day’s session. Positive thinking produces positive results. We had 3 bass in the end – the best a monster at 72cm long and I firmly believe a specimen bass. Of course it was returned, along with the other two.

Mike Quirek told Peter "That was some top shelf guiding Pete!! Watching those big bass slamming the baitfish over the reef, seeing that double figure fish breech a few times, the cold beer and awesome ham sandwiches.. Just fantastic craic. Between Bass and Pollock my arm is aching this morning!"
Mike Quirke told Peter “That was some top shelf guiding Pete!! Watching those big bass slamming the baitfish over the reef, seeing that double figure fish breech a few times, the cold beer and awesome ham sandwiches.. Just fantastic craic. Between Bass and Pollock my arm is aching this morning!”

08 September: The neap tides are still producing bass. I had an 8lb fish to a surface popper on Sunday and Mike Quirke had this one yesterday. One of six to the boat, all coming to lures. Mike took the “Lions share” of the fish catching all but one of them. Think I’ll just stick to the guiding!

Some good fish at Inch Beach competition

Inch

The last Tralee Bay SAC competition of the summer took place on the 30th August 2015…

20 anglers took part in our last summer comp of the year. Hoping for a bit of surf, we arrived to flat calm waters, which meant we would be fishing for flatties.

The competition started at 12 pm, and not to be deterred by the serenity  of the water, some anglers still took a chance on catching a bass, but alas not one bass to be found during the entire comp.

Overall 102 fish were caught, turbot, brill and flounder – no round fish. It was an interesting competition to say the least with participants either catching very low or  good  numbers of fish.

It was nice to have a couple of visitors join us for the  comp, Mike Curtin from Galway and Ian Misselbrook from the UK .

The results are as follows

Senior :

  • 1st- Eugene Farrelly – 265 points
  • 2nd- Connie O sullivan – 221 points
  • 3rd – Mike Curtain- 212 points

Junior:

  • Christopher O Sullivan – 166 points
  • Eoin Foley – 66 points
  • Craig Corbett- 54 points

The best flat fish was David O Sullivans with a 28 cm flounder.

No round fish caught.

Well done to all who took part and see you at the next comp: 27th September Cappaclough  12- 4 pm.

Warning to salmon farmers over water extraction, Connacht Tribune

Salmon farm operators in Connemara have been warned over the illegal extraction of water from a local freshwater lake. Warning letters have been issued to two salmon farmers operating in Kilkieran Bay following the discovery of an illegal pump and piping system, siphoning fresh water from a nearby lake. Galway County Council has written warning letters to Bradán Beo Teo and Marine Harvest regarding the detection…

Considerable improvement for Laune salmon anglers

Sinead Downes returns a nice little grilse at Johnston's on Thursday
Sinead Downes returns a nice little grilse at Johnston's on Thursday

Billy Downes of the Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association reports as of Monday 7th water level is reading .95m at the Laune Bridge or about 1 foot 3 inches. this level is OK for all methods but I would like it to be higher.  A good fall of rain would be welcome. While the week was not great it was a considerable improvement on the previous two.

Sea liced fish of 8 lbs landed at Rock Pool on Tuesday
Sea liced fish of 8 lbs landed at Rock Pool on Tuesday

There were fish met each day but in low numbers and few of them were fresh.  Billy Downes did land a sea liced fish of 8lbs on Tuesday evening on the fly at the Rock Pool.  It was noticeable that the fly seemed to do better than other methods for the week.

Some or our returning European members are now putting in a big angling effort and thankfully they are meeting the odd fish.  Fish being met at Johnston’s, Heffernan’s, O’Connor’s and Broderick’s.

Beat 3: There were a few fish met and lost on the Beat for the week.  There are fish there in what kind of numbers it’s hard to say but it needs about two feet of water to make it fish well.

Prospects:  Hoped it would be better but we live in hope that a few fresh will run into the river over the next six weeks.

Another Lovely 12lb Salmon for Peter Cunningham on the River Boyne

The Salmon Being Recuperated by Peter Prior to Release Back to the River Boyne

Unsettled and wet weather had put water levels up on the River Boyne during the last couple of weeks but over the weekend local angling guide Peter Cunningham paid a visit to the lower section of the river to see what conditions were like currently on the Rossin, Slane and District Anglers waters. The water had dropped and cleared so Peter tried a short fishing session on the fly, a session that produced a lovely 12lb fish for him. The fish was played carefully and returned to the water to recuperate before being released to continue its upstream journey.
