Angling Guide and guesthouse owner Kevin Lyons reports from Melview Lodge:
Pieter truyen, Ivo Flipkens, Sen bamps & Jos bamps from Belgium were over for their first Irish Pike fishing holiday and decided to stay with Kevin and Jane at Melview Lodge in Longford. The week went very well for them catching around 80 Pike, Kevin said they had some nice Pike up to 1.2 along with a number of smaller males. The guys really enjoyed the fishing and the social side of things and I’m sure we will be seeing them back in Ireland in the future.

The first 3 days of Peg to peg battle at the World Pairs

Day 1

In a thrilling peg-to-peg battle, Carl Blurton (Maver) came up just 70g short of winning Bunerky Lake after netting some big bream. Drawn peg 13, Carl netted some fish pushing 4lbs to run neighbour Rob Wootton very close.
Shimano/Dynamite Baits backed Rob kept fish coming for most of the match, but had a real golden spell of 12 fish in 30 minutes around 3 O’Clock. Slipping the net under skimmers from 12oz to nearly 2lb, Rob finished up with 28.700kgs from peg 12 to get the current UK Champs’ week off to a flying start.

Rob, who also had some hybrids of 6-8oz stamp said “they are nice fish to catch, but I would rather have skimmers going into the net.”
Rob takes pole position in the Daiwa Cup.
Heather Humphreys was interested to see how Rob Wootton had caught his fish. The VIP party stayed chatting for nearly an hour at peg 12

World Pairs - Scene

Day 2

Flat calm conditions and bright sunshine made for difficult fishing almost everywhere on Day Two of the LAIW World Pairs Angling Champs.
On Airport section of Lower Lough Erne, Garbolino Ireland World Feeder silver medallist, Frances McGoldrick and half of the 2013 3rd placed paring, Paul Keeley, spent most of the match involved in banter about who had the edge. Both men were casting short of the drop-off and looking to pick up as many small roach and perch as possible.
There were a few bonus fish to be had, but the day was one of just keep dropping something into your net.
Casting just past the weed was the plan for Airport on Day Two. There were plenty of fish in and around the cover, and they could be tempted out on the feeder cast to 40m.
Bunches of red maggots alternated with a couple of bits of worm picked off fish for all the competitors in the section. 2012 Daiwa Cup winner, Frances McGoldrick use a cage feeder with a 60cm 0.16mm hooklength tied to a size 12 hook. “This peg is a bit shallower than the others to my left,” he said. “I put on a cage feeder to let the bait empty out quicker.”
It certainly worked, as he picked off some nice net perch and a bonus roach of close to 1lb.
On peg 12, Paul Keeley was also working hard to bring small roach and perch back from his 40m line. Standing to crank them hard, he managed to keep most out of the copious weed that sheltered the fish. A nice hybrid and some bigger perch helped Paul to record 6.100kgs when the scales arrived. That stayed top weight until Frances’ peg, when the Ballyconnell rod dropped his fish into the weigh net.
6.100kgs was the call and the banter about who had the most fish stopped.

World Pairs - Scene 2

Day 3

Connolly’s Shore on Garadice Lake has seen a few decent weights coming out over the last few days, with small fish on the pole, or skimmers and hybrids on the tip. Fiona Beeby drew peg 4 on Day Three and decided to only set up two feeder rods so she could go all out for bigger fish.
A Daiwa Matchwinner 12′ was her main choice, with a Porky Pig as back-up. Feeder Tension 0.10mm braid on a Daiwa Sweepfire reel plus a 6lb Maxima shockleader completed the casting duties.
While many associate chopped worm with Irish skimmer fishing, Fiona chose to only introduce casters and hemp as feed.
“I’ve travelled to the World Pairs with my husband Stephen every year, but this is the first time I’ve fished and I’m loving it. All the lads I’ve fished against have been very helpful and the stewards on each section are superb. They help carry kit, and when I had a health problem yesterday, they were on hand to assist. The stewards here knew I had been in trouble yesterday and were extra vigilant. What a great event.”
The mix was Sensas Lake and Gros Gardons, darkened with some Tracix black. Casting a medium cage feeder out to 40m, she was quickly into fish. A worm and red maggot hookbait picked off skimmers and hybrids steadily for the first 90 minutes.
Using a Tubertini Serie 18 in size 12, tied to 0.16mm Silstar Matchteam allowed the West Drayton (out of Sheffield) girl to hustle fish towards the net while others suffered pike attacks.
A better bream suggested a real bonanza could be about to happen, but like all other anglers in the section, Fiona had a slow hour mid-match. The ripple that had been on the lake all day dropped, and the cloud cover lifted to give way to strong sunshine again. The last two hours of the match became a case of scratching for a few bites.
German star Rudiger Hansen on peg 8 bucked the trend and had a strong last 30 minutes to thank for another lake win. Realising he needed some extra fish, Rudiger put out three quick casts with a lot of finely chopped worm in and swapped from triple red maggot to a large piece of worm on the hook. His 13kg helped keep him in the hunt for the Daiwa Cup.

Father and son outfish competitors at Cappaclough Competition

Daniel Brosnan (PRO) for Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club reports on the Cappaclough Competition which was held on Sept 6th:

The conditions last Saturday were more for sunbathing rather then fishing but the competition was the only subject on peoples minds. With little wind, little surf, and bright sunshine, everybody knew that the fish would be few and far between….

The conversation before hand was mighty, the bit of weed on the sand was the topic of some and the bright sunshine made sure bottles of water were at hand, tactics were talked and with the massive gap between competitions, nobody knew who would turn up??!!!!…

All in all there was a good crowd, 20 anglers altogether and some match anglers from cork had made the trip. Every body had scratching on the mind but when the all and mighty ‘Phil Ord’ pulled in a 49cm bass to sand eel on a pulley rig, heads were being scratched instead of the surf…

Daniel Brosnan - Cappaclough Sept 6th 2014 1To be honest the fishing was poor, with the bright sunshine literately beaming through the water the fish just were not in areas. That cannot be said for one part of the beach tho, David O Sullivan and his son Chris O Sullivan pulled in a total of 20 fish between them and that made David and Chris both Junior and senior winners on the day…

The anglers in contention would be James Allman, David O Sullivan, Aidan O Sullivan, Shane Mc and Sean Fitzgerald…..

I am a complete novice at match angling, with this only my second year but one thing I have noticed is sometimes the junior anglers are on the day better then the seniors…

Sean Clifford had a great day and when he arrived with no bait myself and Eugene gave him the world of it and did he show us up…

I can’t exactly remember what he had but the enjoyment in the young lads face was something to behold, I know for certain that last Saturday was something that will stick in his mind forever more…

The species caught on the day were bass, ray, flounder and I think a mullet but I stand corrected on that…

When everybody congregated in O’Neil’s of camp after the match, the results were very tight and with only 1 point between third and forth places, heads did bow….

Daniel Brosnan - Cappaclough Sept 6th 2014 2Another great match and its a pity it was the only one of the summer sun, another thing thats needs to be sorted out is our next match as it coincides with the Dawia Irish Pairs and if anybody has a suggestion on when to have it, please do…

With the Irish Pairs, All Ireland Final and the master angler we don’t know when we can have it but stay tuned…

05/09/14  Again the fly Anglers are having some great manipulation in the Sea Trout department, so lets get to the action, first in the striking zone, is the Italian connection, yes you have it, Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin, caught 4 Sea Trout, ranging from juniors up to 2 lbs. and in the words of his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com don’t forget to mention that they were all returned. Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. James and Tom Merrite of the UK, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 4 Sea Trout on the drift, ranging from Junior class up to 4 ½ lbs. Just for the record all their Sea Trout were all returned. Now we head down the North Shore, Dirk from Belgium caught 15 Sea Trout ranging from junior class up to 4 lbs. while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com Now to the hired out Boat Department of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com Marc’s Fishing party from Belgium caught a total of 20 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class and there were a good few in the 3 lbs. to the 4 lbs class and of the 20 Sea Trout caught, 19 were returned. Now we head to the south side and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Dara Tracey, caught 2 Sea Trout both in the 1 ½ lbs. class. Wind west light, with reasonable cloud cover.

06/09/14 Straight to young angler of the day and that goes to Eva Lane, who caught her first ever Sea Trout and may it be the first of many. Staying with my Noble Sea Trout and the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com Marc’s fishing party from Belgium, caught and released 10 Sea Trout ranging from junior class up to 2 ½ lbs. Also in good form in the C&R department, was Mark from Belgium, who caught 7 Sea Trout to his rod, the best weighing in at 2 lbs. while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com staying with the Sea trout, Mr. James and Tom Merrite of the UK, caught 2 trout, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Now we head up to the upper lakes and Lough Derriana, Mr. Dermot Deveroux and Mr. Mick Dunbar, caught 3 Sea trout on the drift, ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. Wind E light with good cloud cover.

Young Angler of the day Eva Lane
Young Angler of the day Eva Lane

07/09/14 Bright Sunshine was the order of the day and very little action in the morning, reason being there was no wind come afternoon there was a gentle breeze from the east, the only bit of action reported was from Marc’s fishing party from Belgium and fishing out of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com and in the words of Marc and I quote, 3 Sea Trout, Junior class. So ends our weeks fishing, and in the words of my satellite reporter it was too bright and as you can see by the photo there is no argument to that.

08/09/14 Straight to the back date department, yes you have it I failed miserably in my duties in my reporting on the upper lakes, anglers fishing with their Gillie MD, on Lough Derriana yesterday 7/9/14 caught a fine catch, with 7 Sea Trout ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. and topped that with 20 Brown Trout. Now back to the present, All my Noble fly anglers could do today was sit and wait, reason being the lake was like a milk pond, with clear blue skies and the sun raging down, need I say more. On that note, I must apologise for the lack of information, but as you can see my Noble Anglers failed miserably in all departments.

09/09/14 We start with flat calm conditions this morning but this didn’t deter Mr. Markus Kruse and his Gillie MD from putting their trolling rods out and it wasn’t long before they had a rod bender, but sadly my Noble Salmon had the last laugh, but the same couldn’t be said when they got their fly rods out for a bit of sport in the Sea Trout department, they met 8 Sea trout in total and caught 4, 2 juniors, 1 Sea Trout in the 2 lbs Class and finished their day off with a fine Sea Trout in the 4 lbs. Class. Staying with the Sea trout department Ms Wiebke Behnecke from Cologne, while fishing with her Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught her first ever Sea Trout weighing in at 1 ½ lbs. May it be the first of many. Wind flat calm this morning but come lunch time the wind came from the West, light with reasonable cloud cover.

That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Low water conditions impact seriously on grilse fishing at Drowes

Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay. The water level has almost retreated beyond the water level gauge
Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay. The water level has almost retreated beyond the water level gauge

Drowes Fishery manager Shane Gallagher reports on the last few days on the River…

09/09/2014 Today’s full moon is particularly bright and close to earth, a so called supermoon, bringing the highest tides of the year. The water level in the river has rarely been above 0.4 metres throughout what has been one of the most prolonged periods of low water in many years. The low water conditions have had a serious impact on grilse fishing, making what appears to be an already poor grilse run even more difficult for angling.

Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay. The water level has almost retreated beyond the water level gauge
Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay. The water level has almost retreated beyond the water level gauge

Even the fish that are present, and there are large numbers of fish in the lower stretches, have been exceptionally dour since arrival and are now even more so as they are growing quite coloured. Fishing effort has been very low for the past weeks as everyone awaits the rain that is so badly needed but proving so elusive as we enjoy an Indian summer, forecast to last until the middle of the month. There have been occasions for celebration amid the gloom of difficult conditions though, with a number of younger anglers recording their first ever salmon and some more seasoned hands recording their first on fly.

Put your feet up the fish are in no hurry at Delphi

Fishery manager David McEvoy reports from Delphi:

The weather here in Delphi has been absolutely stunning since my last update, with no rain and relatively calm conditions. It has been far from ideal for salmon angling, with fish becoming increasingly hard to tempt. Those who persisted with salmon were duly rewarded and we’ve had four in the interim. Many of our guests preferred to concentrate on sea trout and there were some nice trout landed.

Delphi - September 2014 1Chris Barry from Sydney who does a lot of trout fishing in New Zealand managed to land three of these four salmon. The first was on the 3rd of September on what we could call a New Zealand Collie Dog. The fish was taken from the Quarry pool and weighed in at 4lbs4ozs. He had two on the 4th, the first again from the Quarry, again on a New Zealand Collie Dog and weighing in at 5lbs and the second from the Deadmans on a Minkie Collie Dog weighing in at 5lbs2ozs.

Peter Eaton from London landed our fourth salmon. This came from the Turn pool just as he was finishing up his week. The fish was taken on a Nymph and weighed in at 3lbs4ozs.

Again with the weather sea trout fishing was difficult but any day we get enough wind we got fish. With relatively little fishing effort we landed thirty four sea trout for the week, the biggest of these a fish of approx. 3lbs landed by David Rainford on Doolough.

At the moment we are still experiencing some beautiful Autumnal weather which for the West of Ireland at this time of the year is truly incredible. Our fishing is quite busy now till the 22nd of September but we have availability after that and we will be offering excellent value for those of you who want to try the Last Cast for the 2014 season. Speaking purely from a fishery perspective I would hope that the weather will break before the end of the season and we will get some Atlantic Depressions rolling in.

Delphi - LandroverFinally for those of you who used to love the old Land Rover because you could all hear me coming, well that is no longer the case because our new Land Rover has just arrived and the breaks don’t squeal yet!

Bill has his finger on the trigger with cracking specimen wrasse in West Clare

Bill Ryan with specimen wrasse
Bill Ryan with specimen wrasse

Bill Ryan enjoyed some good sea fishing in West Clare last week and tells us:

I have just returned from a week in West Clare where the rock fishing was excellent when conditions allowed. There were plenty of Wrasse at The Bridges of Ross, Bonfils Creek and all the way up to The White Strand at Killard, Doonbeg.  Several wrasse to 4 lbs. and over with the best a Specimen of 5.2 lbs on crab at the Bridges of Ross. This was caught on a 12 ft. Pike rod, 30 lbs. b.s. braid, Shimano 4000 reel, 10 grm. Olivette and a size 4 Carp Hook baited with a small crab which was bounced along the bottom. The bite was gentle but when struck the wrasse shot out to sea stripping line from the reel!

Triggerfish showed up at a rock mark near Killard, The White Strand, Doonbeg. Strips of limpet on a size 4 Carp Hook fished just off the bottom was the method. A red bead seemed to entice bites. Best fish was 3 lbs.

Fresh sea liced fish a treat after a small rise last week on the Laune

Noel Hickey with a 7 lb sea liced fish on the fly from Johnston's

Billy Downes reports from Laune:

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 8th September water level fallen back to about six inches on the gauge at Johnston’s. The small rise we got last week worked a treat and up to Monday last our members and visitors were meeting fish mostly slightly stale fish. Then from Wednesday fresh fish were seen running the river but they were difficult enough to catch.

Noel Hickey with a 7 lb sea liced fish on the fly from Johnston's
Noel Hickey with a 7 lb sea liced fish on the fly from Johnston’s

The exceptions being Noel Hickey from Limerick and Sinead Downes from Tralee who respectively had fish of 7 lb and 6lb bars of silver with sea lice on them. We were beginning to think we would not see another fresh fish before the end of the season. Fish of the week goes to Tom Ward who landed a beautiful if slightly tinted fish of 14 lbs at Paul Connor’s on the worm. Best fish on the fly goes to Kieran Conlon (Guideline Powerteam Ireland ) who landed and returned a fish of 12 lbs from the bottom of the Rock Pool.

Sinead Downes with her first fish in four years, 6 lbs on the worm.
Sinead Downes with her first fish in four years, 6 lbs on the worm.

There were a few more fish landed but most anglers are out there enjoying the lovely weather and the ambiance but one ingredient missing from most anglers experience – the pull or the salmon.
A good few sea trout are being caught on the fly. This writer returned two over the pound and Richard Barry had one of 2 lbs and Michel Bertrand had a sea trout of 3.5 lbs.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters for September will cost €35 still excellent value compared to other fisheries and the chances of a fish.

Beat 3:

There are a few salmon in the deeper pools on Beat 3, hard to tell what kind of numbers but very resistant to fly spinner or worm.

Prospects: In this weather prospects for the week are not great but if you’re out you could catch one the fresh ones running, a sea trout or a good sized staler fish late in the evening on the fly.
There is news of rain over weekend and sport will certainly improve then but 2014 will still go down as the third bad year in a row on the Laune.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25

Great sport at the 48th Cobh International Sea Angling Festival

Charter skipper Donie Geary reports on deep sea fishing in Cobh:

What a fantastic week this past week has been!
Monday morning we kicked off the 48th Cobh International Sea Angling Festival with 35 anglers taking to the water in beautiful sunshine and slack winds.
The Chairperson Mary Geary flaged the boats off at 10am. to fish the Smiths area South of Roche’s point. Fishing was scrappy all day and the Charter Boats had to move about to try and locate fish, we had a pretty slow start on “John boy” but things improved as the day went on, with local angler Frank Burke best on the boat with 400 points and third overall.
On Tuesday morning we opted to fish the same area as the previous day and the skippers had to work very hard to find fish, at the end of the day the best on “John Boy” was a regular visitor to the Festival Gerard Gerjes from Holland who finished in second place with 390 points.

Wednesday was a well deserved restday. On Thursday it was decided to change tack and send the boats East of Power head, we started on a mark which I call Dolly Parton but commonly known as twin peaks, the Pollack and Conger were coming on board at a steady pace, early afternoon things slacked and we moved about a mile further east and again this proved to be a good decision as local restaurant owner and current Irish lady Champion Angler Sandra O’Shea topped the boat, and won the day with 770 points mainly good pollack with a few conger.

We also had Ger Richardson in third place with 655 points which included a lovely pollack of 5 kg. and Frank Cronin with the heaviest fish of the day with a 13.5 kg. Conger.
On Friday we returned to the same area and Milo Burke was best with 705 points enough to make him the 48th Cobh International Champion 2014.
The week was rounded off with the presentation of prizes and beautiful dinner in the Commodore Hotel followed by music by the very lively “Celtic Brew”.
