Fish farm under fire over water extraction in Kilkieran – Connemara Journal

A pipeline laid in Kilkieran last month to access millions of litres of water from a lake in the Carna-Kilkieran Water Supply Scheme has been installed without planning permission – and with no agreement in place with Irish Water.

The 3.25km pipe has already been used to bring large quantities of water from Loughaunore to a salmon farm operated by fishery giant Marine Harvest Ireland in Kilkieran Bay, to treat an outbreak of Amoebic Gill Disease (AGD).

On June 17 last, Marine Harvest Ireland applied to Galway County Council for a Declaration of Exempted Development under Section 5 of the planning act – an exemption which, if granted, would indicate the local authority’s view is that the pipeline does not require planning permission….

12.5lb Bull Huss for David Spokes during the Galway Bay Boat masters

Galway Buccaneers SAC reports:

Congratulations to Pete Davis on Winning leg 4 of our boat master angler series sponsored by Galway Bay Fishing. It was Pete’s first competitive outing in about 4 years and he displayed no signs of rustiness as he quickly set about building a lead with multiple species and numbers of fish coming to the boat. In fact all around the boat there was an array of different species being boated with a very busy days fishing had by everyone.

Conor Graham who had won the last two outings kept within touching distance of Pete but couldn’t reign him in with Pete leading from wire to wire. Both Pete Davis and Conor Graham ended up with 10 species each and between them they had well over 100 fish to the boat with Pete Davis boating 69 fish while Conor Graham boated 45, so well done to both fantastic fishing. Noel Griffith who was on his first boat outing of the year fished very well to take 3rd spot finishing with an impressive 9 species.

Galway Buccaneers SAC - 4th leg of Master boat anglers compWeather wise it was a dry day with a light WSW wind and a gentle enough swell. Conditions dictated fishing at anchor would be the chosen method to begin with to avoid tangles which would otherwise have ensued with a fast drift.

Elsewhere around the boat there were some cracking fish coming in, Conor Mountaine landed the first Bullhuss of the day by the end of which everyone had boated a Bullhuss including a cracking double figure for David Spokes weighing 12.5lbs. Conor Graham had a smashing Cod and a nice Ling. There were some lovely Pollack being boated by Vinny Corrigan, Marcin Tomaszek and Duncan Brown who also had a nice Bullhuss. While Sean Gerrity had a blitz of Dogfish at one stage which kept him in the race he also had a good mix of species in the end.

Galway Buccaneers SAC - 4th leg of Master boat anglers comp 2We finished with 15 Species including: Cuckoo Wrasse, Ballan Wrasse, Cod, Ling, Coalfish, Pollack, Pouting, Poor Cod, Whiting, Dogfish, Bullhuss, Haddock, Grey Gurnard, Mackerel and Launce

Thanks as always to our skipper Kevin MacGabhann for a great days fishing and for looking after us with refreshments and ensuring everyone was taken care of. Full result to follow

Bob White

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

10/07/14  Mr.Graham Elwood and Mr. Meurig Parsons, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 5 Sea Trout on the drift, ranging from Junior class up to 5 ½ lbs. just for the record they were all returned. While fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com Again all sportingly returned. Wind light NW with good cloud cover.

11/07/14 I start in the get your facts right department i.e. yesterday I reported that Mr. Graham Elwood and Mr. Meurig Parsons, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 5 Sea Trout on the drift, well in fact they caught 7 fine Sea Trout and staying with Mr, Neil O’Shea and his backdate hired out boat department, Mr. Peter McBarthy caught 3 Sea Trout and Mr. Eddie Blanch also caught 3 Sea Trout and last but not least local Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] caught a few Juniors. Wind light W with a hint of NW at times and overcast. Now to my criticism department, today there were a good few boats out manipulating their flies and alas they didn’t report their catches, how do you expect me to report the facts of this great fishery if you can’t take the time to text your catches. So please let your fingers do the talking at the end of the day by texting 0872074882  Thank you.

12/07/14 There was only one good battle with my Noble salmon in the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] and I will say one thing you can’t keep this angler out of the limelight, when he comes down from Northern Ireland, and that is Mr. Andy Wishart, and for good reason, he caught a fine fresh 5 lbs Grilse on the troll and if you go back on the Salmon and Sea trout notes, this will confirm it. Now to the [email protected] Sea trout department, the Commander-in-chief  of Waterville Boats Mr. Michael O’Sullivan, reports that there were 6 Sea Trout and a few Brown Trout taken on the fly, in his hired out boats. Now we go down the North Shore to the Bungalow and staying in the Sea Trout Department, Mr. Graham Elwood and Mr. Meurig Parsons, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 2 C&R Trout on the drift, and Mr. Keith Francis caught one C&R Junior, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Wind, there was a good Westerly all day, then veered N this evening, light to fresh and overcast with the odd heavy shower.  A Message from W.F.D.G.

Reminder from Waterville Fisheries.C&R Fundraising Comp on 8/9 Aug. All welcome. Entry Form on www.loughcurrane.com or contact me at this number 0876889775. Looking forward to your  support! Kevin O’Sullivan.

13/07/14 Germany may have won the World Cup, but there is nothing like catching your first Sea Trout on the fly, on Lough Currane the premier Sea Trout Lake in Ireland, and that is exactly what Mr. Ben Frances did when he caught himself a fine Sea Trout of 5 lbs. on the fly, then Ben’s Father, Mr. Keith Frances also got in on the act with a fine 2 lbs. Sea Trout and released another Sea Trout of 1 ½ lbs. and Guided by their Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  and just for the record extra time wasn’t needed. Now we cut across the Lake to the South side and hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Shane and Fran O’Neill  from Co Down, caught 8 Sea Trout on the drift today and in the last few days they have added 7 more to their basket. Wind SW fresh with bright sunshine all day.

14/07/14 The 60 year long wait for Mr. Bob White of the UK, and fishing out of www.butlerarms.com  for his first Salmon ended today with a fine Grilse caught on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] and to end this drought  on his 70th Birthday was the Icing on the Cake so Happy Birthday and many of them in both departments. Now to Michael’s hired out boat department, Mr. Andy Wishart on Northern Ireland, caught a cracker of a Salmon on the troll in the 12 lbs. Class and Andy was telling me that he had won hell of a battle with his Noble Salmon. Now to Michael’s Sea trout backdate fly department, yesterday Mr. David Holland and party caught 2 Sea Trout of which the best was 3 lbs. Now back to the present, Mr. Keith Frances of the UK, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 2 Juniors on the drift, which he sportingly returned, staying with the Bungalow, Mr. Paul Pipes of Switzerland caught 1 Trout o his rod, while fishing his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com

Ken Towner

Now we head up the North shore a few hundreds yards, a Guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 1 Trout. Now for Sea Trout of the day, which caught on the evening shift, and that goes to Mr. Ken Towner of the UK and Waterville and for good reason he caught a fine specimen Sea Trout in the 6 lbs class on the drift and by all counts had a great fight with his Noble Sea Trout, and thanks to Ken for taking the trouble to send the photo.

10.6lb Bass beauty for Jim Clohessy at the start of the tagging program – our 'Catch of the Week' winner

Jim Clohessy - 78cm 10.6lb - Beautiful fish - now part of the Bass Tagging Programme 2014

Guide Richie Ryan of www.corkbass.com  was present for the start of the bass tagging program for 2014. Dr. Tom Doyle and Damian Haberlin were keen to get started and managed to tag three bass in Cork Harbour this week. One of the bass was a specimen hooked by well known angler Jim Clohessy. The data from last year is being collated by the team and should be of great interest to all anglers when available.

Meanwhile Richie reports some good bass fishing he had in the harbour recently. The guide had four bass on the fly in a short session and three on lure a few days later. He calls this research ! So it’s good to hear the bass are back in the harbour again.
While out today Richie caught 6 fine bass locally in the morning and Pat O’Shea had 50% of last years total by mid April.  Cork’s looking good!

Read about fishing…

Jim Clohessy and some of Ireland’s finest angling journalists decided that they would like to establish an online presence where they could continue to publish articles that would be of interest to all anglers wherever they are based (following the demise of Irish Angler magazine), but of course with a distinctly Irish flavour. So that’s what you get at Topfisher.eu.

Species Fishing Good on the East Coast

The East Coast is Giving Some Nice Species Fishing at the Moment

Ruairi Coleman from Swords Angling Centre reports that there is currently some good sea angling to be had on the East Coast. Lots of mackerel are being caught at Howth and generally fishing along the east coast is still very good despite the fact that there’s a lot of weed on the beaches at times.

Rory has been out fishing a couple of times this week at various marks on the east coast and he and his fishing buddies have had lots of species including smoothies, small tope, small bass, dogs, whiting, flounder and a few nice sized codling.

For up to date angling information and a range of top gear why not drop into Ruairi at his new shop in Swords. He stocks a full range of sea, game, pike and coarse angling tackle and bait. Swords Angling Centre is located in Applewood Village next door to the Orchard Public House.

Ruairi can be contacted by telephone at 087 707 0237 or by email at [email protected]

LRFing for colourful corkwing wrasse

Welcome back to Jay La Roche of South East Angling, who captures the colours of the sea in his articles.  Jay has had a good weekend with LRF on the shore.  He reports:

Got out over my days off this weekend…..

Lovely conditions beautiful pristine clear water albeit with a touch of North in the air….

Had originally planned for a bass or two but I was surprised to blank…… the less said about that the better. One thing I will say is that fishing is surprisingly tough.

Any way back to my LRFing my first target was flounder and I was trying out a rig that most guys use for thin lip mullet or golden grey…..a mepps type spinner with a small trace with a single hook and piece of gulp/isome.

First or second cast result……fish on a lovely flounder of about 25cm….

Jay La Roche - FlounderI saw this fish coming out the water bright orange spots…..I have to say I thought it might have been a plave but the orange spots quickly faded and it was clearly a flounder ah well maybe next time…….. I kept fishing like this for another 20 mins but that was to be the only flounder.
So I switched over to a jighead and gulp…..amd immediately it was blenny after blenny after blenny……

Jay La Roche - WrasseI didnt take any photos of these as they mostly just tail gripped the lure and were easily shook off or I just unhooked quickly and went straight back.

Jay La Roche - Wrasse 2I did however manage a gorgeous corkwing wrasse one of our most beautifully coloured species of fish…

Compliment of:

Only 6 fish for Delphi this week as catches remain low

Fishery manager David McEvoy reports from Delphi:

After some nice water last Saturday, I was expecting some reasonable catches but I’m afraid it was rather slow with only six fish landed for the week. Water levels were above 15 till Thursday which although low is enough to bring fish. Most fisheries seem to have a similar story at the moment with a few exceptions.

Delphi - July 13th 2014There were grilse seen here during the week but they were less than co-operative. Conor Hannon had the first fish of the week on Monday, a sea liced 3lbs2ozs fish from the grilse pool on a Cascade. Sean Dempsey managed to land two on Tuesday. The first was 6lbs12ozs on a Beaded Nymph from the Turn pool and the second a 2lbs fish from the Bridge pool on a Delphi Collie. On Wednesday Nick Kreissl managed to land his first ever salmon on the fly from Salmon City on Finlough. The fish weighed in at 6lbs1oz and was taken on a Yellow Allie. That evening Sean Dempsey landed a sea liced fish of approx. 14lbs from the Turn pool on a Dempsey nymph. On Thursday, whilst fishing with Roger Kenny, Sean Dempsey again, with the expert help of Roger, managed to land a 9lbs fish from Salmon City on Finlough on Jungle Bunny Bibio.

Delphi - July 13th 2014 2On a positive note there appear to be some good sea trout arriving and there were some landed during the week, although nobody has specifically targeted them yet. That may change this week as we have some old time sea trout anglers fishing with us. So it will be interesting to see what sea trout catches are like this week.

We have had some light rain today and the river having fallen to 10 yesterday is now running at 25 and with more forecast for Monday I would be hopeful of more Grilse showing up in the system.

Spinner works well for Maurice at Owenea Fishery

Owenea - Maurice Kennedy with 7lb salmon
Owenea - Maurice Kennedy with 7lb salmon

Lindsey Clarke reports from OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 7th to Sunday 13th July 2014.

There was a little more rain this week and thankfully this resulted in better water levels. The river was reading 0.12 metres on Monday but by Tuesday the river was reading 0.20m. Not a good flood but far better than the low summer levels of previous weeks. Thereafter the river fell again until another small flood reading 0.16m on Sunday. The gauge average for the week read 0.13 metres. A few rods fished this week and we recorded, at last, a few salmon caught. On Monday, Maurice Kennedy recorded an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8.

Owenea - Maurice Kennedy with 7lb salmon
Owenea – Maurice Kennedy with 7lb salmon

On Tuesday, Maurice recorded another salmon caught. The fish weighed 7lb and was caught on a spinner from beat 7. Anthony Carr reported 2 grilse caught and released again. These weighed 3 & 4lb and were caught from beat 4 on a fly. Michael McLaughlin logged a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. On Sunday, Anthony Carr recorded a further grilse of 5lb caught on a fly from beat 4. The forecast for the coming week is for unsettled weather and hopefully this will raise water levels once again.

All quiet at Lough Melvin

Lindsey Clarke reports  from LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 7th to Sunday 13th July 2014.

Lough Melvin remained very low once again this week and a serious amount of rain is required to fill the lough. Salmon fishing was quiet and it seems there was little angling effort for the same. A few rods reported some decent wet fly fishing in the deeps for sonaghan although most of the trout were on the small side.
