Good gar rescues the day for small boat anglers at Rosses Point

garfish
A good garfish from the shore

Cal Sheehan was fishing with his son Daire recently near Rosses Point, County Sligo. It was a quiet days fishing with only a couple of mackerel caught when Daire shouted “I’m in!”

This time he had hooked no mackerel. The fish skipped about and danced on the surface – a gar. The garfish took a small spinner and Daire did well to land it on very light tackle. After they took a quick picture they released their unusual looking fish.

The pair were disappointed not to have a set of scales as it was probably one of the biggest garfish they had caught and were sure it would have made a specimen.

Fishing deep for pike best tactic on Derg during hot bright weather

Another in the boat

Paul Bourke from IrishFishingTours.com reports that there is still some good fishing to be had on Derg despite the recent weather where bright sunshine and soaring temperatures made angling difficult last week.

Some good bream around Portumna but bright conditions having an effect

bream
Bream

With the recent hot weather and low water level fishing has proved difficult over the last couple of weeks. Most anglers report below normal catches on the Shannon, however Jack Markham from Louth, Lincolnshire had a few good days fishing on The Salmon Run.

bream
Bream of this size helped t o make weights of 30-60lbs a day

Ensuring plenty of ground bait went into his swim each day he had nets of around 30 lbs – 60 lbs of Bream and Hybrids with several fish around 6 lb a change in temperature and rain forecast over the next few days should see conditions back to normal.

Pike Fishing

The Pike fishing recently has not be as good as in previous weeks but anglers still averaging 6 – 8 fish per outing.

Blue shark blitz for Bellavista boats at Cork Harbour

Blue shark
Jim Clohessey

The last 7 days have seen some great small boat shark fishing out of Cork Harbour. Anglers fishing from the Bellavista Angling Centre have had had up to 6 blue shark in a session. One boatload of anglers had to stop due to tired arms and fished for pollack to loosen up after a number of bruising encounters with these sleek oceanic predators…

Blue shark
Sanrdo Deriu with his first ever shark

On Saturday morning (21/06) small boat angler Declan Collins fishing with his father Pat and Sardinian adrenaline junkie Sandro Deriu had 3 shark and lost 3 others in a hectic half day session. A perfect drift and a frozen bait block from Bellavista Angling Centre ensured the outstanding result. Kevin Murphy seems to have perfected a concoction of fish, oil, guts and garters that when frozen results in a sustained release of shark attracting particles. The Bellavista Blocks are available on request and save a lot of time as mackerel have been patchy enough inside the Harbour, though getting enough hook baits is not a problem in deeper water.

Declan, his brother and father were back on the water again on Tuesday 24th June. Again three sharks were landed but it was a slower session being a whole day with  long gaps between hook ups. Anglers fishing on the small boats from the Bellavista fleet fared better and had more consistent sport.

Blue shark
Jim Clohessey and Dennis Bolding

Jim Clohessey and his crew in particular had a cracking day on the water. Jim was fishing with pair of Dutch anglers and they had super craic with lots of blues including some real bruisers released along side. The anglers soaked up a lot of punishment before admitting they could take no more and finished the day with some pollack off the reefs.

The quality of the sharks is really top class at the moment with large females dominating the catches.

Sunset on river Suir in Fiddown
Sunset on river Suir in Fiddown

The hot weather continued all week and it did impact on fishing on many inland waters in particular although there was a lot of activity nonetheless.  The weather definitely suited sea angling both from shore and at sea.   There is a some broken weather now and the rain should improve and freshen up salmon and trout waters in particular.

Tom 'Doc' Sullivan with a super trout from the River Suir is our 'Catch of the Week' winner
Tom ‘Doc’ Sullivan with a super trout from the River Suir is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winn

The salmon fishing on the Cork Blackwater improved over the last few weeks with plenty of quality fish recorded at Blackwater Lodge.  It was a much quieter week on many of the salmon fisheries in the Cork Kerry area with the low water levels and bright sunshine making fishing difficult.  There were steady catches of salmon and sea trout reported all week on Lough Currane.  Over on the Dingle peninsula there was some excellent night fishing for sea trout on the Owenmore River.  The lower water conditions at the Galway Weir Fishery bring better grilse fishing for anglers.  Despite the hot conditions, there were some nice salmon and sea trout fishing reported on the River Erriff in Connemara.  A few salmon were reported from the nearby Delphi Fishery.  Despite the bright warm conditions, 194 salmon were reported from the River Moy.  The estuary continues to fish well for sea trout.  The Ballisodare Fishery also produced 115 salmon mainly at the falls area and most fish were released.

Well known angling guide was fishing the River Suir with Andrew Ryan from Clonanav using a small dry fly and landed the fish of a lifetime, a fine estimated 8 lb. brown trout which was quickly photographed and returned.  This splendid fish wins our Catch of the Week.  It was tough for anglers on Lough Sheelin in the heatwave but some nice trout were recorded by anglers fishing late in the evenings.  The Hot weather is keeping many anglers off Lough Corrib in the past week.

A brilliant specimen smoothound of 15.25 lb. was the highlight of good fishing for anglers deep sea fishing off Wicklow with skipper Kit Dunne.  Angling guide Sean Jordan reported very good bass fishing for clients in the South Wexford area.  Anglers fishing with charter skippers Sid Jones and John Devereux enjoyed many species while out deep sea fishing out from Kilmore Quay.  Cod and Blue Shark were caught in numbers by anglers fishing with charter skipper David Edwards at Clonakilty.  A nice range of species including specimen spurdogs, codling and tope were only a number of the big range of species for deep sea anglers fishing with charter skipper Luke Aston out from Carrigaholt in Co. Clare.

My own namesake, Paul Bourke from Irish Fishing Tours on Lough Derg reported that his clients have had some excellent pike fishing ranging from 85 cm to 112 cms. on jerkbaits.  It is nice to report that a 15 year old French visitor enjoyed some excellent pike fishing with angling guide Kenny Sloan in the Foxford area despite the sunny warm weather conditions.  Conditions were tough for the qualifying session at the weekend on Lough Erne near Enniskillen for the World Championship lure competition with pike perch and bream recorded over the two days.

A charity match for Cancer raised over €2,000 by the 34 anglers who fished Lough Muckno at the weekend where the fishing was tough in the sweltering conditions.  Some of the bigger carp up to 13.5 lb. were the highlight of excellent carp fishing at the Oakland’s Fishery near New Ross in Co. Wexford.  Barry Blenkey and a friend recorded a huge catch of bream on Lough Derg last week.  Nigel and Howard from Torquay enjoyed memorable Bream, Tench and Roach fishing near Melview Lodge in Co. Longford.

The hot weather is still with us but there is rain in the last two days and broken weather looks set to continue and bring much need water into some of our rivers.  As always, please wear a lifejacket when going afloat and be safe out enjoying the best of Irish Angling

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke

A quieter week on many of the salmon fisheries in the Cork Kerry area in the past week.

EILEEN CARROLL MURPHY  from the Inland Fisheries Ireland Office in Macroom office reports on salmon fishing trends on many salmon fisheries in the Cork Kerry area.

FOR WEEK ENDED SUNDAY 22nd of June  2014

KILLARNEY LAKES AND LOUGH LEANE

6 salmon landed for the week, ranging in weight from 4 lb. to 7 lb., landed mostly by local anglers.

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

As of Monday 23rd June water fallen back to 1 foot 6 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s.

There were ten fish reported from the Laune for the week.  Fish of the week goes to Mike Crowley from Tralee who sportingly returned his first fish of the year a 14 pounder caught on the fly at the Rock Pool on Tuesday evening.  On Monday a Tralee angler landed another 14 pounder at Johnston’s on the worm.

The Laune like the rest of the country suffered from excessive sunshine during the week and especially at the weekend  which did not help the fishing.

There are four French anglers fishing Laune Anglers waters for the week.  It will be interesting to see what they have to report for their week.  One thing is for sure they will enjoy the company of our own members and enjoy the ambiance but will they meet fish?  Or will they hear about the Draft nets at Cromane and in the Laune reducing their chance of catching a fish and the chance that they will return to fish again in 2015?

Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.

Beat 3:

Beat 3 needs a foot of water but the trout fishing conditions are ideal especially in the evenings.

For Beat 3 Permit Costs click on: Beat 3 Permit Prices 2014

Prospects: While anglers say that there are fish running the river, the fishing could be a lot better.  Even over the weekend when the draft nets were off, the fishing was not the greatest. I would say overall that the fishing was disappointing despite great water.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25

RIVER LEE

10 salmon landed for the week ranging in weight from 3 lb. to 9 lb.  mostly caught on shrimp and fly.

RIVER BANDON

Salmon fishing improved last week on the Bandon. The river was very low but fish still ran the river.  The Bandon anglers’ waters fished best.   The most effective method was shrimp and prawn and the best fish reported was 12 lb.

RIVER ILEN

4 fish landed for the week by club anglers, best 8 lb. by M O’ Donovan on worms.

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports

The warm and sunny weather of late impacted heavily on pike fishing. However, French anglers Jerome Lelimausin along with his son Clement made their way to Foxford to meet up with local guide, Kenny Sloan, to test their pike fishing skills on a number of different waters. Conditions were tough and the northerly wind didn’t make things easier.

However, they caught 6 pike for the day with a few more lost in the weeds. Poppers and surface lures, along with trolling, accounted for the catches. Fifteen year old Clement managed to catch his biggest pike to date, a strong fish of 88cm. The two French anglers are planning to return to the Foxford area next year to try for a bigger one.

Low water levels send anglers to the Falls for any results

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports from Ballisodare Fishery:

The Ballisodare Fishery saw a rather good week considering the low water conditions with over 115 salmon caught, most of which were released.

Due to the extremely low water levels the majority of the fish were caught at the Falls. At present, the average size of fish is about 4lb, with a few fish of 6, 7 and 8lbs. still showing. Most salmon fell to the prawn, with some taken on fly and worm as well.

Amongst the successful anglers were David Crawley 5 lbs. (fly), Michael Wymes 5 lbs. (fly), Pat Forkan 6 lbs. (fly), Hillary Mitchell 7 lbs. (prawn), Keith Campbell 6 lbs. (fly), Heather Dean-Wright 4 lbs. & 5 lbs. (fly), Patrick O’Connor 4lb (prawn) and James McGuire 5 lbs. (fly).

A lot of fish are coming in on the tides at the moment, and angling is very good with fish being caught constantly.
