Edenderry Angling Festival – June 2, 4 and 6

Fishing the pole at Edenderry on the Grand Canal

Edenderry Coarse Angling Club will celebrate its 25th Anniversary and running one of the most successful canal fishing festivals in Ireland over 25 years on the Grand Canal.  The club itself has 40 stalwart members with regular events across 19 miles of canal that have been well stocked with carp, tench, bream, roach, hybrids and perch.

Edenderry

With such a landmark event about to take place in the midlands of Ireland, Waterways Ireland responded well to news of such an important event and has already released a large batch of rudd.  Two large tanks of fish were released at Tubberdaly and are expected to spread along the waterway from there.

“We have a great relationship with Waterways Ireland and Inland Fisheries”, said Pauric Kelly, President of Edenderry AC.  “We appreciate their level of interest and the continuous effort they make to keep the canal in good order for boats and fishermen alike.

“The 2014 Edenderry Angling festival will take place over three days on June 2, 4 and 6; tying in with the nearby Prosperous Festival  on June 1-3-5 and we are hoping for a big entry!”

Getting the tournament off the ground took a lot of hard work and in its first years there were nine canal fanatics from Liverpool and 10 other anglers but it has matured well and the best entry was 114 matchmen.  It is truly an “Irish Angling Festival” of the old style with local pubs put on a complimentary supper every evening, there are at least 90 beds in the various BB’s and pubs and there are lots of prizes on the table when it comes to the presentation.

Catch returns are very good for a canal venue and the festival one-day record is held by Liverpool’s Frank Holding who had 54lb of bream, tench, roach and rudd on pole and caster.

The 2014 Edenderry Angling Festival is over three days June 2-4-6.    The entry fee is €130 each and a three man team an extra €20.

And by the way  …  this is a terrific canal, stuffed full of fish and only an hour from Dublin.  If you fancy four days or a week on the canal call Active Irish Angling for accommodation and ferry.

On the coarse fish angling,  some nice quality bream and hybrids are being caught and observed at St. Mullins.  It is expected that these fish are in to spawn in the area and when finished will revert back to normal holding areas further downstream.

Brian Stevens, Slaney River Trust, reports on the last week’s fishing on the Slaney…

This was a week of 2 halves with the water dropping steadily until Wednesday and the lower half of the river fishing well with Clohamon, Tombrick and Riversdale amongst others producing fish. On Wednesday Paul Ryan had a great evening’s sport on Riversdale hooking 3 double figure springers . Two of them came off but the 3rd, which was landed on a cascade, was estimated at circa 14lbs.

The rain, which started on Thursday, knocked out most of the rest of the week but despite being high and coloured the river came back into order on Sunday evening with a fish to Tiernan Sludds in Enniscorthy and this nice fish (8-10lbs) off Moyadie to Tommy Kidd.

Go fishing…

The River Bandon is a most scenic and prolific game fishing river flowing through some of the most picturesque country side in West Cork. It’s source is a few miles north west of Dunmanway from where it flows through that town and and on through the villages of Ballineen, Enniskeane, Kilcoleman, Bandon and Innishannon where it become tidal and widens into an estuary before meeting the sea past Kinsale.

Successful FAW Information Day 2 at Scotch Hall Shopping Centre in Drogheda

Members of the Youth Cafe in Drogheda who Visited the FAW Stand Today in Scotch Hall

There were lots of people out and about in Drogheda today with the Giro d’Italia and First Holy Communion taking place over the weekend. There was a great atmosphere in Scotch Hall as children and adults visited the information centre and fish display tanks to see what was happening. Members of the youth cafe in Drogheda dropped in to see the fish display tanks and have a chat with the staff on the stand.

There were excellent numbers of sign ups for events, from the junior fishing evening in Barnattin, the Ladies Fly Casting Day at Kilineer and  Sea Angling events at Clogherhead. There was no shortage of interest and the coloring competition and raffle proved very popular.

A big thank you to the Staff and Management of Scotch Hall without whose assistance and encouragement the event could not have been as successful as it proved to be. This is the second year of the event at Scotch Hall and it is hoped that we will be back again next year.

There is a very ambitious calendar of events again this year in the Drogheda area and details of all the events can be found at www.faw.ie

Majestic Lough Muckno

Simply Stunning

Catching fish is great but it not always about catching fish as is evidenced by this stunning photograph submitted by Brian O’Neill who fished recently on Lough Muckno at White Island.

In addition to this beautiful vista Brian reports that the bream fishing is excellent there at the moment with minimum weights of 1lb and the Roach are on average 8oz-over with some weighing around the 1lb mark.

Thanks for sharing this with us Brian!

A variety of fish in scenic St Mullins makes it well worth the visit

South East Angling Services guide Gerard Doran reports:

St Mullins is a popular location on the River Barrow which attracts tourists from near and far. The River Barrow is Ireland’s second longest river at 192 km flowing through six county’s where it meets the sea at Waterford Harbour. The Barrow one of the Three Sisters the others being the Rivers Nore and Suir.

Ger Doran - St MullinsThe annual Twaite Shad run on the river is very valuable to the economy of nearby villages at a crucial time of year. If like me you have been travelling to St Mullins for many years you often find yourself meeting many of the same anglers each year and exchanging stories of many fishing experiences from the previous year on rivers, lakes and coastal locations nationwide.

Ger Doran - ShadTime spent on the River this week provided good sport catching using Tasmanian Devil lures and other small metals. Using a Garbolino Magister micro lure rod proved ideal for landing fish without stress but offering great sport. Early morning and late evening sessions provides the best catches. No specimens on this trip but having seen some photos there has been some very nice fish landed by other anglers!

Ger Doran - St Mullins 2Other fish such as flounder, dace, perch, pike, trout and the very occasional salmon are also caught from time to time when targeting Shad. The Irish Specimen Fish Committee (ISFC) weight for a specimen Twaite Shad is currently 1.1 kg.

Ger Doran - Boat at St MullinsThe Barrow really is worth a visit for the silence, fantastic scenery and of course the fishing is pretty good too with many species available to the angler despite a decline in previous years . See here for more information about the River Barrow. If you are going there to fish take care, respect the fish and tight lines.

Irish Angling Update – 08/05/14

The past week has seen a more changeable weather pattern but although there has been more rainfall and strong winds at times, many anglers had an enjoyable weeks fishing all over Ireland.  It has been cooler at times but generally anglers got on with catching plenty of fish at sea and on inland waters.

The good spring salmon fishing continues on several sections of the River Slaney according to the River Slaney Trust where copper tubes flies were the proving successful.  Salmon fishing improved on several sections of the Munster Blackwater both at Bridgetown and on the Blackwater Lodge beats. Some fine salmon to 14 lb. were reported from the River Bandon and fishing improved on the River Lee also last week.  Fishing was poor at the weekend on

Lough Currane but during the week sport picked up for salmon fishing and another fine specimen sea trout of over 7 lb. was taken on the troll by Cork Angler Graham Walker which is our Catch of the Week. On the Dingle Peninsula, there were some sea trout reported from the Owenmore Fishery from the lake.  There was an improvement in the fishing at the Galway Weir in the past week.  Great angling ghillie John Howley caught the first salmon of the season on the Ridge Pool on the River Moy and fishing on the main river improved.  Carrowmore Lake in the North West is still producing very good salmon fishing on the lake.  Two fresh spring salmon were taken on the 1st of May by a German and Swiss visitor fishing at Delphi. Water levels were at summer level on the River Drowes during the week and only a small number of salmon were reported with nearby Lough Melvin accounting for no salmon caught in the past week.

Angling guide Eamonn Conway from Dundalk tried trout fishing on the Annalee River and enjoyed great success with good hatches of olives during the day.  There was better trout fishing reported from Lough Sheelin where great hatches of olives and midges brought many trout to the net.  Angling guide Mick Flanagan had a group of anglers from Offally out on Lough Owel where they enjoyed a great day’s sport for trout. Trout fishing was very good on Loughs Corrib, Mask, Conn, Cullin and on Arrow in the west where anglers are eagerly awaiting the Mayfly.   The Milford fly fishing club in Donegal ran a trout competition on Lough Fern last Saturday and Martin McGrenra was the winner with a good catch of trout and some Mayfly were seen hatching on the lough during the day.

Down on Lough Derg there was some fantastic coarse fishing reported. At Portumna prebaiting accounted for bream up to 7 lb. and some good hybrids especially on the Salmon Run at Portumna. Further down the lough two English visitors prebaited from one of the islands near White gate and were rewarded with over 1700 lb. of bream up to 8 lb. and many roach to over 2 lb. mainly night fishing.  The Ballybay Angling Association held the first coarse match of the Summer League on Lough Egish last Sunday and Kevin Norcliffe won the day with a nice bag of fish with over 25 lb.

There was some nice pike fishing reported this past week throughout the country.  Angling guide Richie Johnson had a party of American visitors out on Blessington Lake and using lures caught some excellent lean pike on their trip. Angling guide Mick Flanagan reports that he had another party of Italian anglers out on the midland loughs pike fishing and using lures they had very good sport with some cracking fish up to 22 lb. on the trip.  At Portumna, Belgium and Italian guests fishing with Mike Murray caught over 150 pike between them for the week with some excellent fish mainly on lures.  There were some good pike reported taken on the River Shannon at Athlone mainly on deadbaits. A party of Belgium anglers fishing with angling guide Kevin Lyons at Melview Lodge in Longford had a bumper week’s fishing recording 146 pike and one big trout while boat fishing using a variety of methods.  Anglers in the Cavan Leitrim area also enjoyed good pike fishing particularly at Lough Gowna, Killeshandra and in Cootehill.

Angling guide Jim Hendrick teamed up with Ladies World Fly Fishing Distance Casting Champion Glenda Powell and Expert Fly Tyer Brian Healey to hold the Inaugural Saltwater Fly Fishing Primer in East Cork.  It was based at Bella Vista Hotel in Cobh and the many participants in the course were treated to expert tuition over a weekend and enjoyed some wonderful fly fishing to catch bass on the fly.  Up on the east coast there were some nice bass and flounder reported taken on crab and ragworm. Down in Clonakilty, charter skipper Dave Edwards had a party of anglers out deep sea fishing at the weekend recording pollack, cod and many other species. In Sligo, charter skipper Peter Power had a local group out deep sea fishing at the weekend and one unusual catch was a lovely dragonet. There was some nice shore fishing reported from the Killybegs area where the Killybegs Mariners club members enjoyed some fine fishing for Turbot, Dabs and Rays among many species.  Steven Neely had a very enjoyable trip to Donegal taking many pollack and some sea trout on a variety of lures from the shore.

In new clippings and other reports in the update there is news on forthcoming events and competitions coming up in the near future.  The Headquarters of Inland Fisheries Ireland have been moved to 3044 Lake Drive in the Citywest Business Campus in Dublin 24. Staff from Swords and Blackrock offices will be situated in the Citywest site from 12th of May but the Swords staff are already onsite for the past two weeks. Our contact numbers, email addresses and website have not changed but feel free to contact us at our new base.  Don’t forget if you are going fishing this weekend, be safe and wear a lifejacket.
