Drowes Fishery manager Shane Gallagher reports on the last few days on the River…

It has been a pretty slow start to April at the Drowes fishery. P. and K. Mc Gowan had a fish apiece from the Wash Stones and Money Hole on prawn on Tuesday 1st, J. Ciconte had a fish on prawn from the Grazings on Wednesday and there was a fish on spinner from the Lareen stretch on Thursday morning and Marty O’ Hara had a 10lbs fish on yellow belly devon from Corry that afternoon.

Fishing remained slower than would be expected over the weekend. The water level was s at a good spring height of 0.6 metres on the gauge on Monday which was a typical April Day of sunshine and occasional heavy showers.

Fishing at the weekend was poor despite a large number of rods out, only one fish was reported on Saturday and also only one on Sunday.

On Monday one sea liced fish had been reported from Brineys by lunchtime. Interestingly the last 4 fish reported have been on fly, so maybe after a slow start for fly fishing conditions are now improving.

Experts attempt to trace sources of Kerry river pollution – Irish Examiner

Experts are finding it difficult to trace sources of pollution in a well-known salmon and trout angling river in Co Kerry.

Water quality in the River Maine, downstream of Castleisland, is of “unacceptable status’’ as far as water framework directive standards are concerned, according to Kerry County Council.

Executive chemist David Lenihan said the limestone nature of the area made it extremely difficult to trace the pollution sources. He said the river, which is not used as a drinking water source, is monitored monthly at four locations and results from all four showed the water to be “less than good quality”, particularly for nutrients and ammonia.

He also told a meeting of area county councillors an EPA survey, in August 2013, showed deterioration in biological quality since a previous survey, in 2011……

You won't find fish in your sitting room, so get out there !

Gerard Doran of South East Angling Services tells us to get out there if you want to catch fish, your persistence will pay off:
Conditions today were challenging but rewarding as the photo below shows a nice rainbow trout which weighed in at 6 lbs. All too often the anglers who ‘get out there’ in such conditions are duly rewarded. Once there is a reasonable chance of catching a fish in a safe environment its well worth a go, often the best fishing is had when no other anglers are about.
Ger Doran - TroutThe fly that caught the above fish Is a Damsel variation which I tied up last week which has caught a lot of fish since, a combination of several successful patterns which worked over time I combined to create a fly that is working pretty well so far!
The fish above amongst others landed fought superbly on #5 weight tackle but by increasing leader strength slightly to 8lbs it means you can land the fish that bit faster to keep its stress to a minimum to aid recovery. A lovely fish that has certainly been in this water a few winters growing naturally. Some quick pictures and off it went to fight another day.
If you would like to learn how to fly fish or indeed further develop your existing skills get in touch to create your bespoke workshop. Location can be arranged to suit your needs, any queries will be answered promptly.

Pike season off to a good start for Bodo Funke in Boyle

pike
Paul Bourke had a pike of 112cm, the biggest of the season here so far

Bodo Funke’s clients open their seasons in style and fellow guides from Lough Derg are treated to some exciting fising with pike to 112cm landed…

Season is off to a good start for angling guide Bodo Funke (Angling Services Ireland) in the Boyle area!

During two days guided fishing a father and son from Russia landed over 20 pike all on lures with the biggest measuring 103cm.

Next the ASI team of Bodo & Brendan hooked up with Tipperary angling guides Paul Bourke and Danny Tiernan of Irish Fishing Tours.

Danny & Paul were up for a days fishing in the Boyle area. The first few fish to come to the boat were some nice Brown trout to 59cm that hammered the jerk baits intended for pike, but after a switch of spots, Paul hooked into something more substantial- a nice post spawn pike of 112cm, the biggest of the season here so far.

Eamonn Conways Top Trout Fishing Trips and Tungsten and Streamer Tips

Top angling guide Eamonn Conway reports that following recent heavy rain alot of the east coast rivers have gone back to the water levels we encountered at the start of the season, but we wouldn’t let these conditions put us off fishing. On the River Fane the water was running clear but there were not many flies hatching during the day or many fish coming up to eat what was hatching, so the option for dryfly was out the window. Nymphing with pheasant tail nymphs tied on size 10’s with 3mm tungsten beads fished with one the point and one on the dropper worked very well while fished in slack water and pockets on the river. As an alternative, streamers worked well in pools, fished on a di 3 line and short leader to get the fly down to the fish. Even the pike were in form for streamers. To be successful on the river Eamonn advises that you must always have different methods at your disposal to get good results.

Tight lines Eamonn Conway.

Six different species and twelve fish in total – Sid is back and counting !

“Great to be back out fishing !” that’s the news from Wexford guide Sid Jones of Fishing Ireland. The weather finally settles and Sid reports:

After keeping a close eye on the weather and looking over some marks recently I decided to target some bass. I wasn’t to be disappointed when on my third cast I struck in and landed a healthy schoolie bass, I took a quick photo and sent him off into the surf. It wasn’t long before the rod tip indicated another bite, a greedy lesser spotted dogfish this time taking a bait aimed for a bigger bass. I baited up again and on the next retrieve I was happy to see another schoolie bass, I quickly put him back and cast out again this time my rig returned with a coalfish. I was kept busy all through the rising and first hour of the dropping tide with four bass, a coalfish, a couple of doggies, a whiting and a few rockling and a flounder. Six different species and twelve fish in total … An enjoyable nights fishing with the targeted specie accounted for.
