Daniel lures a beauty of a pike weighing 22lbs

Daniel's 22lb beauty
Daniel's 22lb pike is this week's Catch of the Week

Richie Johnston of Guide Fishing Ireland reports:

A few days ago I was in the west again with some anglers in search of Pike. Our targeted locations were out of sorts with some extremely stormy weather and the big loughs were very rough.

Solely for the purpose of getting some shelter and some comfortable fishing we decided on a change and headed back to the midlands and the Shannon and some of the loughs on it. Although big waters too, they are much more manageable than Corrib and Mask. For one of my guests it was a day to remember.

Daniel is from Canada and is working here for the next year. At home he is a keen Musky angler and also fished for Bass. Because of this he has a love for lure fishing, and was keen to try it out for Irish pike, along with dead baits which he had never used. His target was to catch a fish of  over 10 lb.

Richie Johnston - Daniel 1The day started with some trolling off a few small islands with various shallow diving plugs,as the water was only 8- 10 ft deep. We tried several areas like this with no luck, so it was decided a move to some deeper water was on. I trolled for a while, always watching the sounder and soon came  across a nice drop off and plenty of bait fish showing too. I dropped the anchor and put out a couple of deadbaits, while Daniel fished lures over the area. Within a few minutes he had a follow and soon hooked his first Irish pike. This one was only a jack of 3 or 4 pounds but a start. Soon after, we had a fish splashing at our floats a number of times. Quickly, Daniel put up a black and orange grub bait and twitched it over the fish, and within minutes hooked and landed it, slightly bigger at 6 or 7 pounds.

Richie Johnston - Daniel 2We then had a few hours of quiet, during which we trolled deadbaits and lures in some terrible squalls. At 2 o clock I suggested we move off the lough and try a stretch of the river.

In summer it is very busy with cruisers but now we had the river to ourselves. One part we found looked very fishy, with lots of weed and what seemed to be huge shoals of bait fish underneath us. I put the boat right in tight to the bank and dropped the anchors down and we were able to fish only a few rod lengths out. I only had the second rod out and I thought a fish was at the bait, again another jack. Then as I looked around the first float was sailing away, the full Herring. Daniel hit the fish straight away and right from the off we knew this was a better one..The rod doubled and the fish fought hard in the weedy water. Was this the double he so wanted? It was more than that, and as the fish tail walked right beside the boat, Daniel let out a shout. He played the fish very well and soon we had her in the net.. A real beauty!!

We quickly got out of the boat and weighed and measured the fish on the bank. Length 41.5 inches and 22 lb on the nose. Daniels biggest ever fish.

A few quick pictures and the fish swam off strongly. We must have dropped right onto the bait fish and the pike were obviously on them too. Daniel was thrilled and cannot wait to get back out again.

What started out as a disappointment with the weather out west, turned into a success after the decision to move.

Tough fishing with only one pike caught on Slevin's Lake

Michael Flanagan, angling guide and reporter, reports:
Last Sunday I met a few local Angling enjoying a few hours pike fishing on Slevins Lake. It was hard going and Eddie Hughes of Edgesworthstown had the only pike on the day. Eddie was fishing with his brother Gavin who lives here in Mullingar, and the lads really enjoy their fishing. Eddie featured in the prizes some weeks back in the Derravaragh Anglers Christmas Pike competition.
Also on Slevins were Eddie O, Donnell and Pat Finglas, Pat was unlucky on Slevins and had a run on dead bait but the fish dropped the bait. Static dead baiting over the winter Months accounts for some huge Pike, and I have received a few photographs of super pike caught recently. Unfortunately they are from mobile phones, and the quality is not good enough for print.

The perch might be Inny but they won't come out…

The River Inny has dropped a little in recent weeks, and I did not chance going down to Lough Iron last week. Having fished to the Railway Bridge down River, and back up river to Coolnagun Bridge. Here some lovely Pike took a shine to my colorful Jig head lures. The perch were reluctant to come on board, but hopefully this week, they will come on the feed. If you are planning a trip on Derravaragh or the Inny System Karl Meehan had boats for hire, and can be contacted on 085-8003525.

JIGS AND REELS. Some wonderful colored rubber lures are available in your local Tackle shops, and you will be very surprised what a Predator fish will latch onto. These lures can be fished on very light gear, and you will have great sport catch Pike and perch on colorful Jig head Lures. Just check out the colorful selection in this weeks Angling Focus. Some might say it’s the way you “Wriggle Your Worm”.

Derravaragh pike on the feed

Barry Darby with a super pike

Michael Flanagan, angling guide and reporter, reports:

It’s a well-known fact we will never understand what way the fish move or feed from time to time. In recent weeks pike Anglers have struggled on Derravaragh, and some only had one or two pike for a long day, and many blanks. Last weekend the Derravaragh Pike came on the feed, and some super fish took the bait. I was working some new coloured rubber Lures for pike and perch on the River Inny and in the Roach Hole on Derravaragh, and into the first drift I had action straight away. A sure sign the fish were on the move.

Kyi Barden and Jack Darby

Jigging in 10-12 foot of water a lovely pike of 8 lbs swallowed one of my small Orange colored Jigs, and gave a fantastic account of itself on light gear. Barry Darby along with young Jack Darby and Kyi Barden were also out and having scene the early activity moved out into the main Lake in search of   big Pike. It was certainly the right move, as the lads boated some huge pike ranging from 15lbs to Monsters just short of the magical 20lbs bracket. Also over the weekend I met Tommy Buggy on the lake, and he had some nice pike to 14lbs. Derravaragh could be worth checking out over the Christmas break.
