Fantastic start to April at Fort William on the Munster Blackwater

Paul Whelan updates us from Fort William on the Munster Blackwater:

We are after having a fantastic start to the month of April with 7 springers to date. 2 springers on fly, one to Mossy Brown of 8lbs and the other to his buddy Brian Hennessey of 8lbs which was landed on Sunday 7th. Pat Kiely who is new to the fishery is having great luck at the moment with 2 springers on spinner of 7lbs and 8lbs. Brian Hennesssy has the heaviest fish so far of 11lbs on spinner.
Our guide Bob had a beauty of 10lbs on spinner while “the new kid on the block” Mick Boylan from Laois landed hid first ever springer of 10lbs off the Castle beat.

Fishing has being difficult with this east wind and with the fishery being very lightly fished there seem to be plenty of fish moving through the fishery so long may it last.

Forecast for the coming week is not good so we can only wait and see what “Mother Nature” puts our way.

Carrigavantry and Knockaderry browns jump for the Black and Green

I had the pleasure of  speaking with David Tantrum, secretary of Waterford City and County Fly Fishing last Friday.  He tells us the new harbour at Knockaderry is progressing well.

Carrigavantry and Knockaderry are both fishing good despite the cold weather. The browns are feeding well and fish to 6lbs have been caught at Knockaderry.  Black and green are the go to first colours, down deep and slow.

To mark Fisheries Awareness Week Carrigavantry Reservoir  are holding an Introduction to Fly Fishing Day on May 11th and 12th.  All generations welcome, from Granddad to Grandson !

Don’t forget to disinfect your gear and remember anytime you fish abroad your angling gear can pick up invasive species.

Out and About for Trout With Eamonn Conway

Another Beautiful Wild Brown Trout for Eamonn Conway

Angling guide and Instructor Eamonn Conway has been out and about again looking for trout in some of the underfished areas of Co. Cavan. No piece of wate escapes Eamonn’s expert eye and strips of water that would be passed by many anglers are subjected to minute examination by this passionate trout angler. Eamonn spent some time recently on a small water in the Cavan area and managed to catch and release over 20 wild brown trout. Most of the fish were taken on nymph but Eamonn reports that there were good hatches of olives brought on by the warmer weather and this is bound to improve the chance of taking a few fish on dry fly as the weather continues to improve.

Better Weather Brings Better Weights at Lough Muckno Easter Festival 2

Bazz Smith Nets a Nice Fish at Black Island

Richard Caplice reports on the final days fishing in the Lough Muckno Easter Festival 2. Some nice weights had been recorded over the last few days but catches have improved as the weather improved. No weights below 2kgs were recored from all pegs being fished on the final day. Catches again consisted mainly of roach and some hybrids. A few bream were also taken with the improvement in weather which brought sunshine and light easterly winds. The winner yesterday at White Island was Darren Fairhurst from the UK and Dublin with a nice 8.860kg net of mixed fish. The best weight from Section B on Black Island was taken by Rory O’Neill from Newry with 11.020kg and the winner of Section A on Black Island was Cathal Hughes from Galway with 7.8kgs.

Salmon to 15lb on the Bandon

David Forde was out last night on the Bandon. He went out at 7 pm after work and hooked this fish on his first angling trip of the season when trying out a new rod with a copper tube fly on a sink tip line. The salmon put up a 20 minute fight before submitting to landing. David saw another big fish – all in Bandon. He reports that it was a very pleasant evening as temperatures rose to about 10 C.
The river Bandon is starting to fish after the very prolonged cold snap. A 12lb springer was taken last weekend on spinner and another angler lost 2 fish. A 4.5 lb sea trout was taken at Desert Bridge last weekend on spinner and there is some good brown trout fishing on the system at the moment.

Weights Improve at Lough Muckno Easter Festival 2

This Net of Fish was Taken during a Busy 1hr Period by this Angler

The Lough Muckno Easter Festival 2 has been taking place this week and is currently being fished between the 2nd and 5th April at venues on Black Island and White Island. Water levels have fallen considerably in the lake in recent weeks but air and water temperatures have been way below normal for the time of year. Anglers had to brave biting cold winds and freezing temperatures on Monday but the weather has improved slightly since then but it is still very cold. Today on Day 3 of the event 25+ anglers again fished at Black and White Islands. Wednesday reportedly produced one of the best weights of the week so far at peg 70 on Black Island. This nice net, 8.5kg of fish, was taken by Rory O’Neill who also had a section winning weight today Thursday 4th on section A with a nice mixed bag weighing 7.080kg. Baz Smith managed 6.620kg from section B today and Darren Fairhurst from the UK  and Dublin netted 6.160kg from his peg at White Island. Feeder, fished between 60m and 45 turns produced best results. Catches consisted mainly of roach with some nice hybrids. Bites were quite finnicky even when they did come in what can only be described as very challenging conditions. The final day of the event will take place tomorrow Friday 5th and results will be posted as soon as they are available.

Irish Angling Update – 04/04/13

Lough Sheelin trout
Lough Sheelin trout

Get out the wellies, take out the rods and reels and hit the road.  At last we see an improvement in the weather.  The cold of the last few weeks left me wondering if I was an eskimo or Irish! Those easterly winds would break the spirit of even the most brave hearted.

Nonetheless braving the elements and catching the fish this week were the Dublin Angling Initiative who organised a fishing trip for 10 youngsters from the Mulhuddart Foroige Fishing club (Dublin 15). The destination was Lough Ramor, Virginia and the intended target was pike.  Under the skilful eyes of IFI’s Des Chew and Josie Mahon the group were guided and encouraged to listen and learn.  A man with a good eye and ear was 16 year old Eric Cahill.  This lad has an instinct for fishing.  While waiting for a pike to take his smelt deadbait, Eric felt a thug indicating a take.  He carefully manoeuvred his catch into the boat, not for one minute imagining what awaited him – the fish of a lifetime.   A fine trout weighing in at over 12lb and measuring over 80cm.  If this fish is ratified by the Specimen Fish Committee it will also be the first specimen recorded from Lough Ramor. Eric wins our “Catch of the Week” this week and we hope he goes on to win many more.

Des Chew and 16 year old Eric Cahill pose with the 12lb trout before releasing it back to the lake. Eric is our "Catch of the Week" winner. Well done, a fine fish.

The Artic Easter kept a lot of anglers away from Lough Sheelin.  Paul Lunny from Ballyconnell in Cavan wasn’t one of them though, as he caught a 4½lb trout (19½ inches in length).  This trout put up one hell of a battle causing Paul to get his net tangled in the engine while trying to reverse towards the fish. The engine stalled, the net was destroyed, and poor Paul had to beach the boat on Chamber’s shoreline in order to land the fish.  The fish was later released back into the water and it will take an angler with his wits about him to catch this one again!

Fly Fishing Ireland guides Mark and Alan Houlihan plus William Kavanagh have had a very productive time over the last couple of weeks at Inniscarra Lake.  Over 100 fish have been caught.  Mark tells us that the Pike seem to be still on the feed close to their spawning areas.  Most of the Pike have been taken on flies stripped at speed tied in a variety of aggressive colours.

With the low water temperatures Delphi finds the fish extremely hard to seduce although Yvonne Zirngibl managed to land a beautiful 6lbs2ozs sea liced fish from the Whin pool.  The river Drowes fared better with one or two good salmon being caught each day.  The largest of these was a 12lb salmon caught on a Tunny Boy fly from The Grazings by Denis O’Toole on March 27th and Aaron Watton landed an 11lb salmon caught on a spinner from Lennox’s Bridge on the last day of the Month.

Carton House tells us that the Rainbows are starting to feed hard now.  Several flies are working well at present, with the orange fritz or pink fritz being among the best.  Tinnehinch Fly Fishery in Enniskerry has been a victim of the weather but Hugh Duff welcomes April and the change in the weather as do all of us.  So I guess there’s only one thing to do – shake off that Artic Easter we’ve been through and give April a big welcome. 🙂

Tight lines,
Nancy Hearne

Rainbows jump to the colourful fritz on the Sheet of Water at Carton House

A nice Rainbow caught with an orange fritz on the Sheet of Water.

The Sheet of Water

The Rainbows on the Sheet of Water are starting to feed hard with excellent fishing during the milder hours 11 – 3.  Fish are feeding at the surface although the usual Rainbow flies fished a little deeper are certainly producing the goods.    It is an excellent spot to get some casting practice in as there is little fear of back casts becoming snagged etc and it is quite sheltered even in the most unfavourable of conditions.

Several types of fly are working well with the more typical ‘rainbow flies’ at the top of the list.   The more successful flies at the moment are in orange fritz or pink fritz.  Also worth a try are more traditional nymph patterns such as GRHE and Goldheads.

A nice Rainbow caught with an orange fritz on the Sheet of Water.

Typical river set up’s are perfect as the water is not particularly deep – a 5wt rod being perfectly adequate.

Fishing / watercraft lessons can also be arranged on this stretch of water.  Included in the price for a lesson is the hire of a rod, reel, line and flies for anyone new to the sport.

A day permit is €50.  Anglers should note that this means they can fish for pike on the Rye Lake, trout on the Rye Lake, trout on the Rye Water and trout on the Sheet of Water (all fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might.
