Glorious sunshine, fantastic fishing in Clare

Fine spurdog

Some great weather at the tail end of last week saw skipper Sean Maguire and his crews enjoying some fine fishing off the coast of west Clare. Although they tried a shark drift and had sharks around the boat, these smat sharks proved adept at robbing baits and taking hooked fish without getting hooked themselves. There was plenty of good fishing to make up for the lack of shark action though, with some great pollack action in particular. Spurdogs, bull huss and whiting also made an appearance, while mackerel was in plentiful supply.

Long-awaited settled weather produces fine fishing in Galway Bay

After a horrendous few weeks of windy weather, small craft warnings and big swells, John Fleming finally got out to some decent deep water over the last week.

Back out!
Trips out to the deeper reefs produced some fine fishing, with plenty of nice pollack, a few fine ling, nice red gurnards, a couple of grey gurnards, a surprise dab and a handy few mackerel as well.
Nice ling
Decent pollack

The first quid also showed, which will keep deck boss Sandy happy! Sandy also celebrated his birthday aboard with a cake from the skipper. Happy birthday Sandy!

Nice squid

Ground fishing also produced a few nice hiss, while a short family trip for Frederick and his family produced plenty of mackerel, and happy faces.

High water ends season early in Galway

August started off with nice conditions in Galway, with just one sluice gate open. Fishing was reasonably good too. Martin Kiely had a 4.5lbs grilse on the 1st to start the month. There were 4 fish landed on the 2nd, all nice grilse including a 6lbs fish for Martin Weinzerl. Eddie Corry, John McCarthy and Gernot Lipp also had a grilse each. 3 of the fish were taken on fly.

Bill Flavin landed a 4.8lbs fish on the 3rd, while on the 4th there were another 4 fish landed, all on fly. The best fish was a fine 7.5lbs salmon for visiting angler Machinal Antoinc, one of two fish for him. Micvhael Griffin had a grilse of 3lbs and Keith Faller had a nice 6.8lbs fish too.

Sheila Lynch landd a 4.5lbs grilse on fly on the 5th, but inclement weather after that saw iust one more fish,  a4lbs grilse on spinner on the 9th. Water levels quickly increased to 3 gates,. then 6 and 8 by the end of the month, and with Loughs Mask and Corrib still quite high after a wet month, it is difficult to see any more fishing taking place in Galway before the end of the season.

Lough Arrow Anglers back on the water

Lough Arrow

Lough Arrow Anglers report…

We held our rescheduled August competition on Sunday 1st September.  There were 40 anglers taking part, in conditions that were near perfect.  Fishing was tough, with the trout proving difficult to catch.  There were stories of people losing fish and rising fish but not connecting.  Nevertheless, it was great to get back out after the closure and everyone had a very enjoyable day on the lake.  With the mild weather that evening, it was lovely to sit outside The Mayfly having a chat after the prize-giving. Thanks to Philip and Ellie for hosting the event.

Tougher conditions on the Moy due to heavy rain and rising water levels

Jamie Hosty reports from the River Moy…

River Moy Angling Report week ending 1st Sept 2024

River Moy

Water levels remained high and angling effort was lower as a result. Heavy rain leading up to Tuesday 27th August saw water levels at Ballylahan bridge rise quickly to almost 2.2 m gradually receding to 0.76 m by Sunday evening 1st September, following on from dry and sunny conditions on Friday and the weekend. Overall, the total reported catch for the week was 61 salmon.

Moy Fishery

Water levels remained high in Moy Fishery waters for the week and as a result very little angling took place. No salmon were caught but fish were seen moving through the Ridge Pool.

Ballina Salmon Anglers.

Peter McHugh of Ballina Salmon Anglers reported a total catch of 25 fish for this week. Weights averaged 2-5 lbs with the heaviest weighing 10.5 lbs which was caught on the worm on Sunday. Three of the 25 fish were caught on the worm with the rest being caught using spinners.

Mount Falcon Estate

Mount Falcon reported 5 salmon caught for the week. All fish were caught on the worm and the average weight was 4.5 lbs.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers

Gannon’s Fishery

This week Pat reported that 4 salmon were caught on Gannon’s fishery. Three fish were caught on the worm and were kept with one being caught using a spinner which was released safely back to the river. Average weights were reported to be 5.5 lbs.

The Foxford Fishery

Granville reported a catch of 1 salmon this week. The 3 lbs fish was caught on the spinner and was subsequently released back to the Moy.

Foxford Salmon Anglers

Harry Feeney reported 12 salmon caught this week and most fish were caught at the weekend as water levels finally started to slowly drop. Worm and prawn were the methods that were working best.

Cloongee Fishery

No fish were reported caught on Cloongee Fishery this week.

East Mayo Anglers Association

East Mayo Anglers reported a catch of 8 salmon for the week. Four of these fish were taken with the same number being released. Of the 8 fish caught 5 were caught using a spinner and the remainder were caught on the fly. The average weight was 4.5 lbs with the heaviest weighing in at 7 lbs.

Moy Estuary

Judd Ruane reports that it has been another difficult week on the Moy Estuary with adverse weather conditions causing many bookings to be cancelled or postponed.

Nice mix of species aboard Karen Ann in Kilmore Quay

Skipper Walter Rankin reports that fishing on the Karen Ann has been pretty good with a variety of species caught. All the usual fish types, like mackerel, cod and wrasse were caught, as well as bream and one or two others. The settled weather over the weekend should bring plenty of tight lines for the crews too.

Blue sharks and stone basse for West Cork Charters – with bluefin sighted inshore

Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters was out sharking with a crew from the Dublin Fire Brigade when he spotted the first Stone Basse he has seen in 2024. He had to have a chuck at it and, sure enough, he hooked and landed it. Although they are beautiful fish to eat, a few photos later and Dave sent it back on its way.

First stone basse of 2024 for Dave Edwards

It has also been a while since he could target blue sharks and, even though the bluefin are inshore, the crew stuck with their sharking plan. None of the anglers onboard Silver Dawn today had previously caught a shark, but by the end of the day, six had their first sharks and another five fish managed to shake the hooks.
