Water levels finally coming down on the Suir

Philip Maher, Fish Hunt reports on the water levels and fishing on the River Suir:

July 9th : The Suir has finally dropped below 1 meter for the first time in 5 weeks. Prospects if the river continues to drop look real good. I was on the Kilsheelan beat yesterday and we could only spin as the river was still over 1 meter. We had some great fish up to 16 lbs on black/ gold and yellow/ silver flyingC,s. The trout were taking the spinners too with numerous trout caught in the one to two lbs category. Thankfully the Suir is still single hook and all the trout where return in good health.

River Barrow throws up some fine Pike and Tench

John Flynn IFI reports on Coarse Fishing on the Barrow:

Excellent coarse fishing on the River Barrow.  This week sees fine Pike and Tench being caught in the Athy area of the river.  Water levels remain high.

Good reports of Salmon fishing on the Nore

John Flynn IFI reports on Salmon fishing on the Nore:

There were reports of good Salmon fishing on the Nore  especially around Inistiogue, Brownsbarn and Thomastown areas.  Water levels are slightly raised still.  Fish caught in Brownsbarn are averaging  12 to 14lbs and John informs us no grisle were encountered this week.

The forcast for the heavy rain this week could raise water levels to unfishable.

Spanish anglers vs Irish anglers at Drowes Salmon Fish

Team Spain’s Catch Yesterday, 3 On Fly, 1 On Worm.

The good run of fish continues. The water level has dropped back to 0.65 metres on the gauge. It has been a good week’s fishing with lots of fish running and good catches, with many fish on fly despite relatively high water levels. A group of Spanish anglers have shown that football isn’t their only sport by chalking up some impressive catches during their week’s stay.
Fly and prawn accounted for most of the fish during the week. A. Kendal and S. Kingham had good sport on prawn and released 8 fish between them. John O’Neil had a bumper morning on Briney’s with 4 fish on fly, releasing 2. This morning there have been some nice fish of 7 to 8lbs reported from the Washstones and Money Hole on prawn. There have been fish on fly from the Mill Pool, Upper Mill, Crooked Hole, Briney’s and Lennox’s and there have been fish on worm from the Mill, Upper Mill and Black Hole as well as fish on spinner from Lennox’s and Melly’s.

The forecast is for some rain over the week ahead but not large amounts so the water level should continue to drop slowly.

One Hairy Mary and Urs catches a fish at Delphi

Urs Leibundgut
Urs Leibundgut

Week 27 was disappointing from a fishing perspective, despite good water conditions. There were also fish entering the system but there was little or no take on them. There was a total of 10 fish landed for the week.

Giovanni Mazzloeni had 2 fish on Monday, one of approx. 4lbs8ozs from the Whin pool and one of 3lbs7ozs from Fin. The fish were taken on a Collie Dog and a Black and Yellow tube.

On Tuesday Alan Molloy had a 3lbs13.5ozs fish off Finlough on a Willie Gunn.

Raul de Waha managed to land one on a Willie Gunn on Wednesday of 5lbs7ozs from Finlough.

Friday, Brian O’Donohoe had one of 2lbs12ozs from the Deadman’s on a Ghost shrimp; Bob Lawlor had one of approx. 7lbs on a Thunder and Lightening from the Quarry and Giovanni Mazzoleni had his third of the week on a Green Highlander of 6lbs6ozs from the NewIslandpool.

On Friday Urs Leibundgut arrived and it took him until Saturday afternoon to catch fish. He had one from the Quarry of 4lbs13.5ozs on an Improved Helmore’s Hackles and then he landed a fine sea liced fish of 7lbs10ozs from the Whin pool on a Hairy Mary.

There appears to be a good number of fish coming in at the moment but there is very little take not helped by a Northerly airflow.

Hopefully fish will become more co-operative this week.

Wrasse and Pollack from the Beara Peninsula despite the weather

Marcus Dean with his 9lb 10oz Pollack
Marcus Dean with his 9lb 10oz Pollack

Paul Harris reports from the Beara Peninsula

Brothers Marcus and Nick were over from the UK for an attack on the pollack and wrasse population of the Beara and both managed personal bests of both species.

Marcus set the ball rolling with a first day pollack of 9lbs 1oz spinning their favourite soft rubber lures. Nick was in action the next day with several big wrasse the best a near specimen of 4lbs 9ozs. During their week long stay Nick never had a wrasse under 3lb, all taken on crab.

Marcus Dean with his 9lb 1oz Pollack
Marcus Dean with his 9lb 1oz Pollack

The miserable weather conditions early in the week made for uncomfortable fishing conditions but strangely as the weather improved the fishing got harder. Despite this Marcus and Nick are planning a return visit later in the year to try for that elusive specimen wrasse and a double figure pollack.

Over for their first visit to the Beara Alan and Steve from Bournemouth also had their fair share of wrasse and pollack along with huss and conger off the bottom. The rays sadly were notable only by their absence and this could be down to the combination of cold freshwater entering the bay along with the low pressure systems.

See-saw fishing for Lough Sheelin with unpredictable weather

Sheelin Trout July 2012
Sheelin Trout July 2012

‘There he stands, draped in more equipment than a telephone lineman, trying to outwit an organism with a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb, and getting licked in the process’  Paul O’Neil

Brenda Montgomery reports from Lough Sheelin July 2nd to July 9th

High water levels and heavy rain dominated the scene on Sheelin for this week and this in turn seriously affected the numbers of anglers fishing the lake.  The lake is at winter status and the water looked black and cauldron like.

Sheelin Trout July 2012
Sheelin Trout July 2012

This unseasonable weather is not enticing fishermen out and Sheelin’s trout are having an unplanned rest but it must be emphasized that it is the anglers having the rest and not the fish as on some days the lake was alive with movement of trout, with huge numbers reported ‘springing’ in all parts.

There were tremendous hatches of sedge but also as was the case last week there are huge quantities of perch fry and the trout are predominantly feeding on them which makes fishing this lake even more challenging.

Tuesday was the best fishing day with great ‘sport’ particularly around the Long Rock, some anglers that were more than happy with Tuesday’s performance ventured out on Wednesday expecting the same enjoyment only to experience a deadness across the lake and nothing moving but this is typical of fishing – no two days are the same, it reminds me of a quote from Theodore Gordon ‘ It is impossible to grow weary of a sport that is never the same on any two days of the year’.

Wet fly fishing proved to be more successful than the dry fly for this week and a stimulator using a top dropper seemed to be the most successful method.

Youth Angling Day

The L.S.T.P.A will be running a ‘not to be missed’ Youth Angling Day on Saturday July 14th at Lough Sheelin.  This day is open to all 8 – 18 year olds.  The day will include fly tying, casting and then fishing, finishing with a Bar-B-Q.  Everyone must bring a life jacket and eye protection and of course lots of enthusiasm and energy.

Contact E.Ross @ 087 9436655 or Thomas Lynch @ 087 9132033

A catch and release policy is actively encouraged on this lake

Please remember anglers that the size limit on this lake is 35.5 cm (14 inches) – we need our small fish alive…….

The McDonald Cup

The Lough Sheelin Trout Protection Association will be hosting The McDonald Cup on Sunday August 12th from 12 noon to 6pm starting from Kilnahard Pier, entry fee is €20.  In line with this club’s strong conservation policy this annual competition will be changed this year to become a Catch & Release Competition – each boat will be supplied with a measure board and it is the angler who catches the longest fish who will win this coveted cup.  As a gesture of thanks to all members and non members who support this club and all its past and ongoing development and conservation work for this lake and its catchment all other prizes with be presented on the basis of a draw.  This competition will be followed by a Bar -B -Q on Kilnahard pier.  For further details please contact Eamon Ross @ 087 9436655 or Thomas Lynch @ 087 9132033

Sympathies to Frank Kelly

Our sympathies go to Frank Kelly, Chairman of the L.S.T.P.A on the recent death of his father – Thomas (Tommy) Kelly

Number of Catches

Total number of catches recorded: 15

Best catches were by Peter McArdle from Dundalk with 4 fish on Tuesday July 3rd averaging 1½ – 2½ lbs, all caught on stimulators around the Long Rock/Inchcup area of the lake from 2pm onwards.

Two Ipswich anglers brave the elements in Longford and are rewarded with a fishing bonanza including a specimen Tench for Catch of the Week

Graeme with his 6lb 3oz Tench
Graeme with his 6lb 3oz Tench

Geoff Wilson and Graeme Sargent from Ipswich were on their annual fishing trip to Ireland and Melview Lodge in Longford, when they arrived they were welcomed by heavy rain and high winds so high most of the time they were unable to use keepnets in fear for the safety of the fish. However we did manage a few pictures of some of their catches, Kevin said the guys fished in conditions that some anglers would not have got out of their beds for. Water levels were raising by the hour and still they fished on, they caught some cracking Bream along with Hybrids, Roach and Tench.  Graeme caught a fine specimen Tench of 6 lb. 3 oz and wins our Catch of the Week. Well done lads in what can only be described as fishing madness.

Graeme Sargeant from Ipswich with his 6 lb 3 oz Tench which wins our Catch of the Week

Fishing in and around Longford’s lakes and rivers has been seriously affected by the recent heavy and continuous rainfall, water levels are very high for the time of year and some are even in flood making access and fishing difficult. However despite this anglers at Melview Lodge have managed some good fish to specimen size, the weather is set to improve next week so log on and see how the guys from Holland have done during their ten day stay.
