Irish Angling Update, 21/06/12

Blenny

The very unseasonal weather for the month of June continues and it has been very wet and windy for most of the past week impacting on a lot of fishing.  However, anglers are a hardy bunch and still catch a lot of fish in Ireland despite what our poor weather throws up at them.

Up in Co. Monaghan, Lough Muckno is still producing some fair coarse fishing in the difficult weather conditions.  Down on the Royal Canal at Enfield, the annual fishing festival took place and many anglers from home and the UK took part.  Pat Bartley from Lucan won the overall competition and there was good weights recorded over the two days despite the very clear water conditions.  Further down the canal at Mullingar, a red eared slider turtle was a surprise catch when a surprised angler caught it using sweetcorn three times in as many days.  Happily the turtle is now residing in a new home.  The bream fishing down on several loughs has been superb in the last few weeks and more bronze beauties were landed in the past week.   There was good match weights for anglers from home and abroad at the Anglers World Breffni Challenge held at a number of venues near Arvagh in Co. Cavan.

There was some nice pike fishing particularly with a fine fish of 24 lb. 6 oz reported at a competition on Lough Ree.  Elsewhere on the lough at Lanesborough, the local pike club held an instruction day for young anglers and several of them caught their first fish. There was some fine pike fishing for visiting father and son from Milan while fishing in the Boyle area while fishing with angling guide Bodo Funke taking fish to over 20 lb. Another visiting Father and son from Poland landed some fine big pike over 20 lb. while fishing on Lough Corrib.

The heavy rain in the past week has brought a lot of fresh salmon into our fisheries nationwide and catches have improved.  On the Cork Blackwater, there was a huge improvement in many of the fisheries and all the other Cork and Kerry salmon fisheries reported a big increase in rod catches.  On Lough Currane, the good fishing continued with some fine sea trout fishing reported also. One sea trout estimated at over 9 lb. was returned to grow bigger! The Owenmore Fishery in Co. Kerry fished well with 23 sea trout caught last week.  There was some salmon reported from Castleconnell and the River Mulkear.  There was a big run of grilse into the Galway Fishery and catches were very good.  Higher water levels brought a good run of salmon and sea trout into Lough Inagh and better fishing. There was good salmon fishing reported at the Erriff Fishery and fresh fish have run into the Delphi fishery and fishing has improved. Prospects look excellent on all these fisheries in the west. Up in Bangor Erris, there was very good salmon fishing on Carrowmore Lake despite bad weather conditions hampering angling at times during the week.  The bigger run of salmon into the River Moy brought a super rod catch of 500 fish for the week.  There was plenty of salmon reported from the Ballisodare Fishery.  In Donegal, over a hundred salmon up to 17 lb. recorded for the week for anglers fishing on the river Drowes and there was better salmon and sonaghan trout fishing reported from the Lough Melvin. Some nice salmon up to 11 lb. were reported from the Owenea River near Glenties, Co. Donegal.

Despite the poor weather there was a lot of sea angling in the past week and in Wicklow, specimen hunter, John Millerick caught his first specimen smoothhound while fishing on the “Lisin” and caught a lot of other species. There was plenty of bass action reported along the south coast now that the season is open again and many fish were recorded.  There was several sea angling competition reported from Waterford and Cork and at Aghada, well known specimen hunter Tony Tait, caught a super specimen pollack of 13 lb. 10 oz and wins our Catch of the Week.  There is another great U Tube clip on soft plastic fishing for Cod and Pollack off cork harbour this week by Jim Cloghessy and Kevin Murphy from Bella vista in Cobh.  Over in Kerry there was some excellent shore and small boat fishing reported.  Specimen hunter, Terry Jackson reports that he caught some wonderful big pollack on rough ground in the north.  In Red Bay in Antrim, a great range of species were taken on a tremendous day for Dutch anglers on Predator II.

While trout fishing is a little quieter now after the great Mayfly fishing there was still a lot of activity out there.  There was some nice trout fishing reported from the River Rye in the Carton House Fishery. There is still some good spent gnat fishing on Lough Sheelin and there is more evening fishing reported from Lough Owel with some good catches reported.  The weather seriously hampered fishing in the west but there was some action on Corrib and on Conn and Cullin when the weather allowed.  There was some rainbow trout fishing reported this week particularly at the Southern County Fishing Resort where a lady angler broke the fishery record with a 13.75 lb. Rainbow.  There was some good rainbow fishing reported from Lough Acalla near Kilconnell in Co. Galway.  Prospects look good for next week for more good fishing on both inland waters and at sea when the weather allows.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Noel and Cian Mullins with a nice grilse from the Rive Feale

Conditions for Salmon fishing over the past week on the Feale were good after the floods during the early part of the week.  The catch for the week was 15 salmon reported for the catchment with the biggest fish weighing in at 13lbs caught by Dee Dennison, photo attached, in Matt Dillions section of the Abbeyfeale Anglers Fishery.  This fishery yielded a good catch for the week with members catching at least another 3 fish in the area.  Noel and Cian Mullins, photo attached, also had a good salmon in Abbeyfeale town which weighed 7lbs and was very fresh with sea lice attached.  Water conditions remain ideal for both fly fishing and spinning throughout the catchment and we are looking forward to a good weeks fishing on the Feale during the coming week.

Lough Acalla
Big numbers of anglers on Lough Acalla over the weekend as everywhere else was flooded. Mark Hannigan from Ballinasloe had great fishing on a “black bug” and just failed to land a big one that broke at the stand. Three lads from Clare were visiting the lake for the first time on Sunday and had a great day catching 2 lb rainbows. They were delighted with their day

Pike to 24 lb. 6 oz reported at a competition on Lough Ree and a report on an instruction day for young anglers at Lanesborough..

John Devaney from IFI Ballymurray Office reports:

Lough Ree
There was a pike fishing competition on Lough Ree on Sunday with 33 boats taking part. Michael Hughes from Kiltoom had the winning fish of  24lb 6oz which he located  inside the wall at Ballybay.  Second was Paul Fallon with a 17lb 12oz fish caught in Portrun Bay.  A total of 9 big fish were weighed in altogether all doubles.

Lanesborough Pike angling Club held a successful angling instruction programme for beginners over last weekend, 16th and 17th June. The first day involved a demonstration and theory course in the local community centre on how to set up rods, attaching the correct bait and looking at the biology of the River Shannon in Lansborough.  Local anglers along with officers from  Inland Fisheries Ireland gave talks/demonstration on water safety, fish health and  care for fish and the bank environment.  It was a great day.

At the Bridge in Lanesborough gearing up

On day two, the children took to the bank of the river, to try out their newly learned skills. All children caught coarse fish over a 4 hour period, with most catching over 20 fish each…..mostly roach. The two days were a huge success. Lanesborough pike angling club have invested in a lot of fishing gear recently which was used on the day. They are planning a similar day next year, after this success.

Angling Returns

June 11th to June 17th 2012

Where have all the anglers gone?

The weather played havoc with our Sheelin anglers this week (but not with the trout) as particularly at the end of the week very few ventured out.

The quotation that must be remembered is that ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong gear”

Heavy rain of course will have a slightly negative effect on the fish in that the water temperature goes down and the fish drop deeper in the lake but we must remember that the food chain isn’t as plentiful now and Sheelin had good hatches of mayfly this week which brought the fish to the surface to feed.

Thursday was blustery and wet but for those who know this lake, wind is never a problem as there is calm water somewhere and during this week where the wind was easterly throughout, the calm places  were around the Stony islands, along Crover and down into Gaffney’s bay, the water was stormy elsewhere but here there was barely a ripple on the lake’s surface to keep the fishermen happy and fishing couldn’t of been better.

There was an excellent hatch of mayfly on Tuesday and around noon on Thursday with spectacular falls of spent particularly around Crover on Friday evening when the rain stopped and the heat came, around 6pm.

The wind changed to westerly on Saturday which made fishing more challenging but still excellent numbers of trout were caught.

Anglers are switching between wet fly and dry fly fishing with good results from both. Trout are feeding on sedges and there was good sedge fishing on Sunday evening but predominantly this week the trout are coming up for the mayfly.

On Wednesday June 13th thirteen 10 – 11 years old pupils from Ballynarry national school along with their boatmen and teachers set off for Church Island where a mass was said by Fr Gray.  This island which is a landmark on the lake has the remains of an early Christian oratory dating from the 400s and it has now become a tradition to say an annual mass here.  Let’s hope this enthusiastic group and Fr Gray included a small prayer for good weather and good fishing.

The L.S.T.P.A will be running a ‘not to be missed’ Youth Angling Day on Saturday July 7th at Lough Sheelin.  This day is open to all 8 – 18 year olds.  The day will include fly tying, casting and then fishing, finishing with a Bar-B-Q.  Everyone must bring a life jacket and eye protection and of course lots of enthusiasm and energy.

A catch and release policy is actively encouraged on this lake.

Please remember anglers that the size limit on this lake is 35.5 cm (14 inches) – we need our small fish alive…….

Heaviest fish for the week was a 5lb wild trout caught by Michael Kelly, Balbriggan on a spent gnat.

Total number of trout recorded: 56

Selection of catches:

Michael Kelly, Balbriggan – Tuesday evening on sedge 2 trout at 2 & 3lbs.  Wednesday 2 trout both at 2½ lbs on a spent gnat, 1 trout at 4lbs on a wet mayfly.  Thursday 6 trout weighing 1½ – 3½ lbs, wet and dry fly fishing, Friday 8 trout 1¼ – 5lbs, 2 at 4lbs, 1 at 3lbs, all wild, fishing around Crover.  Saturday 2 trout at 2 and 2½lbs.

Andrew Brown, L.S.T.P.A – 7 trout, all caught on the spent, weights were 5, 4½, 3½,3½, 3¼ and 2 at 1½ lbs.

Some nice salmon up to 11 lb. reported from the Owenea River near Glenties, Co. Donegal.

Lindsey Clarke reports from the IFI Ballyshannon Office:

Owenea Fishery – Monday 11th to Sunday 17th June 2012.

There were fair water levels on the Owenea over the week although we received no decent floods with the gauge never reading above 0.26 metres. On Thursday and Sunday water levels were a little lower than desired at 0.16 metres each day but certainly much better the the very low water levels we have had! The gauge average for the week read 0.20 metres. There were a few anglers about this week and 21 visiting rods fished for the week, mainly on beats 8 & 9. To date I have 8 salmon recorded for the week. On Monday, Anne McMenamin recorded a 7lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 9 and Tommy Corr accounted for a 5lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 9. On Wednesday, Peter Grahame logged an 11lb salmon caught on a spinner from beta 8 On Thursday, Kevin O’Neill registered a 7lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 8. On Friday, P.J. Breslin accounted for a 4lb grilse caught from beat 9 and John Lennon recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 5. On Saturday, John recorded a further salmon of 8lb caught on a fly from beat 5 and Kevin O’Neill logged a further salmon weighing 11lb caught on a fly from beat 8. Rain is forecast for the latter half of the week and this will hopefully equate to good water conditions. Prospects look good for the coming week J

Better salmon and sonaghan trout fishing reported from the Lough Melvin.

Lindsey Clarke reports from the IFI Ballyshannon Office:

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 11th to Sunday 17th June 2012.

Lough Melvin fished well this week for salmon with some 22 plus salmon caught with the majority of these weighing between 3½lb up to 8lb. 14 of these were caught on Sunday. These were mainly caught trolling with the majority caught along the Garrison Shore. The trout fishing improved somewhat too with some better Sonaghan being caught from the deep water drifts.

The Rossinver Fishery recorded 3 grilse caught, all on Sunday. Francis McSharry & Jim Connelly both recorded a grilse apiece caught on the fly and Noel Ward accounted for a grilse caught from Ward’s point catching a further 2 grilse elsewhere on the Lough.
