Good dace fishing for anglers fishing the River Barrow in Carlow town

The Carlow Coarse Angling Club held an open coarse angling match on the river Barrow in Carlow town on Sunday afternoon despite fears that the match may indeed have to be cancelled due to the ever present fear that the tail end of a hurricane was on it way to Ireland. The day did prove to be windy but not the gale force winds that were predicted and the rain stayed at bay for the day. The wind made it almost impossible to fish using the long pole and favoured whips which are always evident in the Barrow matches and normally are the chosen method by most anglers.

Most anglers used the Tip method or feeder fishing as it is more widely known and some anglers chose the waggler float method while the remaining few braved the stick float method to have astounding results and net good bags of Dace. There were not many of the resident Roach on show on the day nor the Perch however Tadas from the Carlow club did land a superb Rudd in all it’s colour and glory weighing almost 2 lb. The Carlow cac would like to thank all present anglers for donating to the disable angling bays fund and attending to show their continued support of the Carlow Coarse Angling Club.

Carlow man and popular Leinster team angler Ollie Doyle won the match on the day using the stick float method and managed to rack up nearly 100 fish in total all Dace to weigh in a cracker bag of over 11 lb. When ask afterwards Ollie said the fishing was very hard due to the strong winds but he persevered and the result showed just that. In second place was Gary Doyle another Leinster Team and former Irish International with over 9 lb. of fish mainly Dace and third place went to Bob Hulme Leinster Team hopeful for next year and former Irish International with over 7 lb. fish mainly Dace. All anglers in attendance had a great day and enjoyed the day out with all the usual banter and jesting evident on the day that has become associated with the popular Carlow angling club.

If you would like any information as regards fishing the river Barrow please do not hesitate to contact the club Chairman Gerry mc Straw on 085 2844566 or by e-mail on [email protected] , the Carlow club will be running regular workshops throughout the winter. The club are currently working on two projects one is to include disabled anglers through the instalment of disabled angling bays along the Carlow town stretch of the river Barrow and the other project is to train special needs teachers and assistants how to coarse fish using the Angling Council of Ireland trained coaches. The club would also like to thank the Angling Council of Ireland, The Leinster Federation and off course the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (N.C.F.F.I.) for all their continued support of the club.

Dry fly is working well for rainbow trout at the Cashel Trout Fishery

report by Marlene Mc Laughlin

Warm weather has encouraged anglers to try dry flies once again.  David Speirs (Scotland) banked one using a klinkhammer while Shane Irwin, Gavin Moore and Ronan Green (Dungiven) banked four in total using the parachute fly and a daddy.  Maghera’s Pearse Doherty banked eight over two short days using the egg fly and the suspender buzzer.  Derry’s Paul Ford accompanied by his son Adrian banked eleven in total but only took the two home which weighed 4 lb 6 ozs which fell mainly to suspender buzzers.  Limavady’s Stephen Gurney banked three which took wee bloodworms.

We are taking group bookings for any angling club or corporate groups interested in a fun day.  Catering facilities are available in the adjacent Cashel Fishing Lodge.  Info and enquiries to Marlene at 17 Birren Road, Dungiven BT474SH, Tel: 02877742159,

Excellent fishing reported at Shean Fishery, Owenduff

Shean Fishery

The past week has been excellent, with a very good run of fresh grilse up to 5.5lbs, and fresh sea trout up to 4.5lbs. Water levels have been ideal, and the party (5 rods) landed a total of 49 fish for the week. Prospects for the remainder of the season look excellent, and the Fishery is completely booked. Overall it has been the best season for years, with some wonderful Spring fishing, and some large fish ( up to 22lbs) being landed and many being returned. Stocks of Spring fish are very encouraging  for future seasons.

There are some vacancies for  the 2012 season and application may be made by phoning 0866075958.

Sheelin fished well til gales prevailed

Sheelin fished well during the week with the best day being Friday September 9th which saw ideal conditions of warmth and calm on the lake – a Sheelin angler’s dream but the weekend of strong winds and rain crushed any hopes of a second day performance.

Few anglers braved the gale force conditions, any that did particularly towards evening time on Saturday spent all their energy on baling out their boat as they crossed the treacherous waters with the hooking of trout being the last thing on their minds.

Thursday saw a spectacular hatch of sedges when the wind dropped and there was an excellent rise of fish to sedges.

There was a very good hatch of the blagdon green midge known locally as ‘The Apple Green Midge’ off Derry point from 4.30pm onwards on Thursday, although there has always been a smattering of this chironomid this is the first time in many years that Sheelin has seen the return of this insect.

This midge was always a famous fly for Sheelin in years gone by so it is very encouraging to see it back in such numbers.

There were a lot of stocked trout moving on Thursday as well as wild fish particularly from 6pm onwards.

A reminder to all anglers is that the Lough Sheelin Trout Protection Association will be hosting their 6th Annual Stream Rehabilitation Competition on Sheelin on Saturday October 1st from Kilnahard Pier from 11.0am to 6.0pm.

For details and entry form please Google LSTPA 2011 stream rehabilitation competition.

The heaviest trout caught for the week were by two Balbriggan men – Michael Kelly with a beautiful 60cm 5½ lb trout caught on Friday using a stimulator along the Western shore of the lake and Niall Carpentar also on Friday afternoon with a 57cm 5lb trout caught using a purple daddy along the Western shore close to Reynolds’s.

47 trout were recorded for the week with a predominance of fish weighing over the 4 lb mark.

Some catches were:

Ned Clinton, Cavan – on Friday at 4pm fishing on the Arley side of Merry point one trout at 4 lbs 2ozs using a dry murrough.

Dessie McEntee, Cavan – on September 9th, two trout at 1½ lb (using a red ashed green peter) and 2 lbs (on a gorgeous george).

Andrew Browne, Dublin – on Monday September 5th one trout at 5lbs using a silver dabbler.

Terry McGovern, Garrison – two trout at over 5lbs and 2lbs.

Michael Kelly, Dublin – on Wednesday afternoon, one trout at 3½ lbs around Orangefield on a claret hopper.  Thursday September 8th, six trout – four averaging 1½ – 2 lbs using LF dry flies and two trout at 3lbs caught around Hollywell using a green Klinkhammer and 4 lbs caught at Derry pt. using a stimulator.  On Friday September 9th Michael caught 6 trout, 4 wild and 2 stocked fish – 1 lb, 2 lbs and 2 @ 3lbs, 5 lbs and 5½ lbs, fish were caught using a claret hopper, LF flies and stimulators along the Western Shoreline and Wilson’s side of Merry Point.

Great fly water on the Laune

As of Monday 12th September water at 2 feet 9 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s.  Beautiful water for all methods but especially the fly.

The wind and driving rain at times is a lot of anglers away from the river but those who persevere are still getting fish.  One such angler is Welsh man Gregory Vincent who has opened his account today with a released fish of 6 lbs from John Breen’s. Fish are also reported from all our other fisheries.

Despite the high winds, conditions wont get much better than they are now for the season so I would strongly advise get out there now if you can while there is time and while the water is so good.

Beat 3:

Today Monday on Beat 3 Dan Shine landed his first ever Laune salmon followed shortly after with his second both on the fly.  Water levels on Beat 3 are very good and will improve as it falls back a bit.

Owenea fishing very well, 50 salmon last week

There was plenty of water in the Owenea River this week due to the very wet weather. Every day saw a flood with the exception of Saturday which still gave fair water conditions (0.19 metres) and in fact the river was too high at times. The gauge average for the week was huge reading 0.41 metres!

The river fished very well over the week and there were some 50 odd salmon caught, mainly over the first four days of the week. Given here are some of the catches taken from the catch register.

On Monday, Patrick Scallon recorded a 5¾lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. David O’Donnell logged a 6lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 6. Paul Brennan accounted for a 9lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8. Michael Boyle registered a 3lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9 and Columba Campbell logged a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8.

On Tuesday, Gordon Young recorded a 5½lb grilse caught on worm from beat 9. Paul Brennan accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 9. Jim McLean had a good day recording 3 fish caught on spinner from beat 8. The fish weighed 3½, 5½ & 7lb with 2 of these released again. Seamus Cooley accounted for 3 fish caught on fly from beat 8 weighing 4, 6½ and 8lb with 2 of these released again and Patrick Scallon registered a 4½lb grilse caught on fly from beat 8.

On Wednesday, Gordon Young recorded a 5½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 9. Frank Walker logged a 3lb grilse caught on worm from beat 8. I accounted for 2 grilse caught on a fly from beat 7 weighing 3½ & 5½lb with the smaller of these released. Kevin O’Neill logged a 7lb salmon caught on fly from beat 5. Paul Brennan accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 9. Thomas Corr registered a 5lb grilse caught from beat 7 on a spinner. Michael Boyle recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. Ray Robinson accounted for 3 grilse caught on a fly.  P.J. McNelis registered a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 4. John Northridge recorded a 9lb salmon caught on a fly and Columba Campbell registered a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 5.

On Thursday, John Northridge recorded a fine 15lb 2oz salmon caught on a fly from beat 7. Otmar Butz had a good day catching 4 grilse on the fly from beat 7. The fish weighed 5, 5, 5½ & 7lb with the three smaller fish released again. Michael Devine accounted for a 3½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 3. Michael Doyle registered a 10lb salmon caught and released on a fly from beat 5 and Gerry McCafferty logged a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 3.

On Friday, Kevin O’Neill recorded a 4lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 3.

The forecast for next week is for wet weather and so I would expect the river to have some nice water conditions throughout the week. Prospects look good once again.

Cobh International Deep Sea Angling Festival results

Danny Kane

Danny Kane, Cobh SAC, has won the Cobh International Deep Sea Angling Festival, held in Cork Harbour last week. This is Danny’s second year in a row winning this event and comes just two week’s after finishing third in the National Boat Masters. Well done Danny!!!

Danny, didn’t have it easy, though, and was lying in 6th position coming into the final day. He beat off stiff competition to reach the top spot, narrowly squeezing past Steve Williams of Wales by only 55 points!

This year’s competition was a superb event with numbers up on last year. 52 anglers from 6 nations participated with a few new faces amongst the hardy annuals. Some of the international anglers have now been participating year on year. In fact one group of Dutch lads have now fished the Festival 36 years on the trot! That’s dedication for you but is also a testament to what a great event this Festival is.

As is the case every year, the boats used were from the Cork Harbour Angling Hub fleet. This year the following boats were used; the John Boy, the Lee Star, the Naomh Cartha, the Cuan Ban, the Wreck Hunter, and the Lagosta II. Many thanks to the skippers whose facilities and expertise were second to none. Indeed, with the tough conditions that prevailed their expertise was called upon. Weather conditions for the week were extremely tough with frequent gale force winds, intermittent squalls, and sea-states at times exceeding three to four metres. Despite this the skippers did put the anglers on fish.
