This weekend has been fantastic giving the anglers a very pleasant time with us here at Cashel. Regulars, from Portadown and Banbridge, George Lyttle, Bertie Allen and Billy Rainey had a really enjoyable weekend using assorted nymphs and small lures. These anglers bagged five trout for home which averaged 2.5 lb and also continued to release back into the lake again. David McCool (Limavady) accompanied by Colm and Andrew McClarey bagged a trout which was around the 2 lb. mark.
Jack Tisdall e-mail:[email protected] reports from the Float only match at Roslea Lakes last weekend.
22 anglers turned out for the latest match in the Float Only Winter League in excellent and calm weather conditions.
A sharp overnight frost however put paid to any big weights, however plenty of Roach and Rudd were caught in most sections.
The match was fished on the Roslea Lakes of Lyons, Gavin’s, Inver and Drumacritten.
The lakes fished well, with small Roach on the Pole and Slider waggler making up most of the catches.
The winner of the match was John Potters (Lisbellaw) with 5.700 Kgs, fishing on peg 7 on Lyons Lake, John’s catch included 12 Skimmer Bream on the Pole.
Runner Up was Jack Tisdall (Ballinamallard) also fishing on Lyons Lake, Jack caught 130 Roach/Rudd and 2 bonus Tench for 4.880 Kgs.
Third overall was Keith Murphy (Tempo) who caught 4.860 Kgs from peg 10 at Lyons Lake.
The other section winners were David Herron (Co Tyrone) on Gavin’s Lake with 4.600 Kgs, Brenton Sweeney (Cootehill) 1.960 kgs on Drumacritten and Leading Club Junior
James O’Doherty (Enniskillen) 0.940 Kgs on Inver Lake.
Neil Mazurek (Cootehill) remains on top of the league with 46 points.
Chris Logan wins Catch of the Week with his first ever skate
After a great day at the Irish Specimen Fish Awards on Saturday it was back down to the nitty gritty on Sunday hunting big fish. This one fell to Chris Logan – his first ever skate. It was landed in very deep water using a whole coalfish as bait. The skate was estimated at 153lbs. Not a lot of other fish were taken from this mark, probably due to its presence on the ground.
Chris Logan wins catch of the week for his first ever skate
first ever salmon of 9.25 lb. for Hughie Reid on Lough Currane
Angling guide and ghillie, Vincent Appleby reports on the latest fishing reports from Lough Currane.
1/3/12 Lough Curran was on the flat calm side all day and there was no reports great excitement, but to be fair the elements were against my noble fly fisher. Now we head out to Sea and to all you Bass anglers who like off shore accounts, Mr Kevin Braine of www.kbfishingireland.com Was telling me that he has had some good Bass fishing in the past week.
2/3/12 There was a strong SE wind blowing across the Lake and ideal for the fly but my Noble Salmon thought otherwise, or you could say that my Noble Fly Anglers failed miserably in their duties in procuring my Noble Salmon, and those Anglers that were manipulating there lures didn’t fair much better. Wind as already stated and overcast.
3/3/12 All the Head lines go to Mr. Hughie Reid who caught a fine 9 ¼ lb. Salmon on the troll fishing out www.oshealoughcurrane.com and Hughie was telling me that it was his first ever Salmon, and may it be the first of many, and for the rest of we so called anglers, lessons can be learnt i.e. if your not out there you can’t catch my Noble Salmon. Wind NW light to fresh with the odd shower.
first ever salmon of 9.25 lb. for Hughie Reid on Lough Currane
4/3/12 Lough Currane may of been on the cold side with a NNE light breeze going across the Lake plus a small amount of snow on the hill, but this didn’t deter Mr. Peter Keenan, catching a fine 6 lb. Salmon on the troll with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. That is your ration for this week, from your Gillie/Guide and the Waterville fishery.
5/3/12 All quiet on the SW front in all departments be it fly or troll. As you may be aware Hooked Live are holding their annual Fishing and Shooting Show at the City West Hotel Dublin next weekend march 10th. and 11th. Waterville Fisheries will be exhibiting at the show and will be located at section D5. So come along and have a chat with Tadhg and Kevin o Sullivan and see what’s on offer should you decide to visit Waterville this year.
6/3/12
There were a few boats out and all failed in their duties in Procuring My Noble Game Fish. Wind SSW light and overcast light misty rain at times.
7/3/12
There was a Strong and at times violent NW wind blowing which didn’t make for good fishing and what boats did venture out, didn’t have much success but to be fair the elements were against my Noble Angler.
No Spin No Fly’s just facts.
Angling guide and ghillie, Vincent Appleby reports on the latest fishing reports from Lough Currane.
There were varying conditions over the week on Lough Melvin though it was a drier week overall. The weekend was fairly miserable however giving cold wintry conditions with some hail. A few boats ventured out over the week although I have only heard of one salmon caught to date. This was caught on Wednesday 29/02 by Brian Culbert fishing in Greg Kilfedder’s boat along the Garrison Shore. The fish weighed 7¾lb and fell for a Devon Minnow.
Finally we have gotten off the mark for 2012 and not just with one fish but three. Just to recap it is the first February since 1986 that we did not have a fish. That year the first was caught by Sheamus Heneghan on the 9th of March. I think Paddy Heneghan was looking down on his two old mates and deliberating as to who should catch the first fish. As an aside they had seen Paddy the Saturday before he died so Paddy has thanked them today.
Alan Dunlop had and returned the first fish weighing in at 9lbs at 11a.m. from the Goat Pool. John Mills then had and returned one from the Waterfall of 7lbs. I believe John’s was caught at 11.15 am. This is the official line at this point in time although there is a stewards enquiry between the two men in question.
Alan then caught a second fish of 8lbs1ozs at 11.20am in the Whin Pool.
One of 3 salmon caught yesterday on fly at Delphi
For those regular blog readers you may notice I didn’t include the fly yet. For those who know the men in question I’ll give you one guess bearing in mind the river height was 60. No marks for guessing a Willie Gunn Waddington.
Hugh Brennan had sent Alan and John a card asking them to catch one for Paddy so all we can say is that they did this in style.
It must also be noted that Jim Jackson also fishing with Alan and John lost a fish in the Rock Pool. Bob Brennan from Kilkenny who is also fishing today has nothing as at time of writing. So all I can say is well done to Alan and John and here we go again. For those interested we do have availability for the next few days and next week.
Mar 3: Shane Kinsella from Wicklow was fishing alone on Lower Kilmurry on Saturday March 3 – indeed he was the only rod out that day. He hooked & netted a beautiful fresh fish of ~12lb. on aluminium Garry Dog tube on a sink-tip line which he played for 20 minutes. He also saw another very fresh double figure fish showing around the same time in the afternoon.
March 4: First Fish off the Upper River. Tom Donovan caught a very fresh 7 pounder from the Junction Pool at Bridgetown Abbey. March 7: Couple of good fresh fish seen on Kilmurry by the only rod out.
Prospects: Looking extremely good for the coming weeks with one of the best spring runs for many years.
The river is at a medium/high summer level – the gauge reads 0.52m this morning, which is a lovely fly & lighter spinning height – especially for this time of year. It is up a couple of inches in the last couple of days & the clarity is ~2½ feet. It will fine off in the coming days & will be in cracking fly order. There is a high pressure building over Ireland in the run-up to the weekend, so we are expecting dry weather & temperatures of 11-14ºC in the next 4-5 days.
A slight rise in water levels over the weekend but its dropping back nicely and in percfect order at the moment for fly and spin. Clarity is good but a slight washy colour in it but should be gone in the next day or so. Reports of some nice spring fish been taken upstream so its worth a cast as these fish have to pass us. Just be aware that there are still plenty of kelts in the system. Tightlines. Paul Whelan Fort William Fishery

Ronan Cusack reports that there was no let up on the good fishing on Lough Mask this week, with lots of happy anglers reporting some fantastic sport. The dry mild conditions saw a slow drop in water levels and good hatches of small chironomids beginning to appear in sheltered bays. Well-known Ballinrobe angler Tony O’Donnell and his two angling companions, Sean O’Loughlin and Johnny Chestnut, fished wet flies from Rosshill on Monday and Tuesday last and they had a total of 10 fish over the 2 days (best fish 3lbs). Frankie Guilfoyle and his father also fished from Rosshill on Tuesday last and they had 6 fish for their day (best fish 3lbs). Sean Maloney, Ballinrobe, had a 3 day session with angling partner Eugene Fagan earlier in the week and they had 11 good fish for the 3 days, all on wet flies (best fish 2lbs). Liam Conroy from Tourmakeady fished on Wednesday and he had 3 fish for his day (best fish 1.5lbs). Cyril Duddy and Kevin Beattie Ballinrobe had 7 fish on 3 separate outings this week (best fish 1.5lbs).
Overall Mask is fishing extremely well and well worth a visit.

I have heard rumours of another very big ferox trout caught by the Corrib Predator Team guides, but no details or photos yet, so I hope to have something for next week’s report.
Elsewhere, fisheries staff are flat out working on the Corrib fish stock survey, so I have no reports in from around the lake this week.
Duckfly are starting to appear in some bays already, no surprise given the mild winter we have had, as everything seems to be well ahead on the usual timing.
Spring has truly sprung, and with duckfly hatches building over the next few weeks, good sport should be had on Corrib. Hopefully much more to report next week.
