The past week has seen some windy weather at times, which for skipper Luke Aston and his guests means fishing in the shelter of the Shannon Estuary, out of the big swell. A welcome asset to fishing in this region, with fewer days lost to the weather. This year, Luke says, the tope fishing has been very good, with plenty of lively fish around. Dogfish, bull huss and ray have also been caught, including a rare enough spotted ray. The pics below are a sample of some of the estuary fish caught this week.

Spotted ray
When the wind dropped, they did manage some offshore fishing, with some nice fish off the botttom, plenty of coalfish with some nice pollack through them, and a shark drift produced a porbeagle shark.

Senan Stanley is back out on Derg hunting for trout to see have they finished with the pin fry yet…
The evening after-work trout sessions in the lakeboat are back on! Wasn’t sure how the trout would be feeding, they were preoccupied on pin fry for ages so I left them alone, but they definitely seem to be back hitting the lures now anyway!
Nice feeding spell when the wind picked up, 7 wild brownies landed with as many again that shook the hooks, all safely released after a quick photo!
A 36cm perch fooled me into thinking it was a trout fighting like crazy. Perch are everywhere feeding high in the water across the bays, keeping the lures away from them for long enough that the trout got a chance was the key! Great craic, hon the Sheelin!

West Cork and District SAC fished an Open at Bantry airstrip on Sunday…
Bantry airstrip was the venue for Sunday’s open competition. This venue always produces some quality fish and today was no different. Some fine thornback ray, bullhuss and conger featured during the match.

Alan O’Dowling and JP Molloy had a good battle throughout the match but it was to be JP’s day, winning with a fantastic card of 22 dogfish just beating Alan who ended up with 21 fish which consisted of 20 dogfish and a ray. Well done JP.
Third place went to David Keating with 13 fish. David also won both the round fish pool with a conger of 99cm and the flat fish pool with a thornback ray of 78cm. Today’s pools was worth €90 per fish well worth the trip up from Waterford David.

Our next outing will be in Caliso bay in August, we look forward to this.

The NCFFI All Ireland Method Feeder Final will be held in Oaklands Lake this September, and there are two qualifying rounds for anglers looking to take part. The first round was held at Gaulmoylestown at the weekend, and 18 anglers competed for a spot in the final. It was a close run thing at the top, as Karl Page with 64.48kg just pipped Johnny Bailey with 64.08kg to top the rankings on the day. The 12 top weights qualified for the final, and the second qualifier (already a sell-out) will be held at Oaklands on July 15th.
Inland Fisheries Ireland will open the fourth draw for anglers wishing to catch and keep salmon from Cork’s Lower River Lee on Sunday 30th June at 9am.
‘Brown tag’ regulations came into force on the river from February 1st 2024 and will remain in place until September 30th 2024, when the salmon fishing season ends.Commenting on the requirements, Sean Long South-Western River Basin District Director at IFI, stated: “The numbers of wild Atlantic salmon returning to our rivers is declining. The risk of over-fishing puts stocks in further jeopardy.
“Brown tag measures for salmon and sea trout are required on the lower Lee River to conserve stocks and avoid accidental over-harvesting.
“Where there is a modest harvestable surplus with a risk of over exploitation, this brown gill tag system is introduced to closely monitor the angling quotas.”
A total of 218 brown tags are available for the season. They will be distributed to anglers with a rod licence via four draws through the 2024 angling season.
Up to a quarter of the available number of brown tags can be issued at one time, therefore, 53 brown tags will be selected through the fourth online lottery on 24th July 2024.
The measures are part of the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme (Amendment) Regulations 2023 signed into law by the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan, TD.
Anglers interested in entering the fourth draw can apply using IFI’s online link between 9 am on 30th June and midnight on 21st July 2024 only.
Anglers may only receive one Brown Tag per season for use on the R. Lee catchment.
Successful anglers who receive the tags, via the lottery system, place them on the fish – along with a blue tag as proof it was lawfully caught and may be retained for private use.
Anglers not allocated a brown tag are permitted to fish for salmon on a catch-and-release basis on the lower River Lee catchment, where the salmon is returned safely to the same waterbody.
Anglers must use catch-and-release methods only, involving single or double barbless hooks. Use of worms as bait is not permitted.
Full application details are available through fisheriesireland.ie, by phoning IFI’s Macroom office on (026) 41221, or by mailing [email protected]
