Tony Santry reports on the bluefin tuna fishing off Kerry over the last few days…
Well done to my son Daniel on catching his first two bluefin tuna last week. To be fair, it was a great achievement on the day as the seas were absolutely terrible and was like being in a washing machine but he held tough and saw it through.
We got small break in the weather last week to have another crack at the mighty bluefins. When Liam Tully and friends stepped on to the boat, I knew I was in good company as Liam is a veteran angler at the game all his life. Liam had never taken on the giant bluefins before but soon proved his excellent fighting skills when he tamed this fabulous fish over 700lbs. What a cracker. It was a pleasure to have you and friends on board and looking forward to seeing you again in the future.
Tony has had a decent October chasing bluefins considering how poor the weather has been. Earlier in the month one of Valentia Islands finest, Neilie Lyne, successfully fought four bluefin today aboard Tigger. the fish ranged between 250 and 300lbs with one over 500lbs. All fish were tagged and released to fight another day.
October was much the same as the rest of the season. As most people would know, the weather has been an absolute disaster this season for getting to sea. Having said that, when we did get out earlier in the year, we were catching, tagging and releasing some fine bluefin tuna between 280 and over 800lbs with a good number of our fish being over the 450lb bracket.

Annamoe Trout Fishery is a 4 acre fly fishing lake set in the village of Annamoe, Co Wicklow on the banks of the Avonmore River. The Fishery consists of a fly fishing lake and a Junior Bait Pond. The fly fishing lake is open all year round allowing you to fish for brown or rainbow trout from 10am till dusk.
Ireland’s aspiring feeder anglers from across the provinces took part in the All-Ireland Youth Feeder Championships on Saturday 28th October. It was fantastic to see new faces turnout with 19 young men and women representing clubs across the island fishing two matches for the U15’s and U25’s. The eager anglers were met with a bright day at Annaghierin Lake in County Cavan, chosen for its ease of accessibility, but the fishing was tough. The two groups fished for mostly roach, some perch and the bonus skimmer.
The U15 champion of 2023 is Markas Cmukas who proudly received his trophy for his 1.350kg winning weight. Runner-up for the second-year running was Jack Norris with 1.050kg and in third Tiernan O’Brien with 0.950kg.
U15 Winner MarkusU15 2nd Jack
The U25 champion of 2023 is former U20 World Champion Float Fishing, Charlie Richards who picked up the trophy for his top weight of 5.600kg and 88 fish mostly roach with a few skimmers late in the day. James O’Doherty in second place had mostly small roach for 4.800kg whereas Sarunas Zenkovas managed a few skimmers for third place with 3.975kg.

NCFFI International Feeder Manager Brenton Sweeney says:- “It was good to see a healthy number of young anglers fishing a feeder match in both the U15 and U25 categories. The fishing was tough and hard on some of the younger anglers new to fishing unstocked venues, but an enjoyable day was had all round. Thank you to all who took part, help from senior anglers and the parents who made it possible for the U15’s to come. With a call out for anglers interested in the new U25 World Feeder Championships it was also great opportunity for me to observe the techniques on the bank.”
U25 Top 3
The top three anglers in each category were rewarded with medals and a selection of tackle prizes. Not everyone caught but all went home happy with a selection of goodies for their next fishing experience. In addition, a draw took place for the U15’s who didn’t make the top 3 and James Wellwood won a 6m whip donated by Niall McKitterick, Browning Fishing Ireland

Had 2 fantastic days out this week. In Ardaire Springs first on Thursday and then Laois Angling Centre Friday. Conditions were nice and calm but overcast. Every fish seemed to be on the surface of the lake, you could see lots of action. After pulling several mini black lures on an Aqualux fast cast I switched over to the olive apps work and started to meet fish straight away. For the remainder of the day the theme was olive with an olive rocco lure being the best fly of the day. A lot of other anglers on the lake appeared to be on small nymphs, Diawl bachs and cormorants all taking there fair share of fish.
We ventured out to Laois Angling Center on Friday for a cast prior to the weekend. Conditions were ideal with low lying sun and mixed cloud cover. Fishing was slow to start till Mark and myself figured out what was working best. We both set up 2 rods each. One for pulling lures and the other for a Pimp / Bung set up. That could be changed quickly for dry fly if needed.
Laois AC rainbow
Beginning on the deep end of the lake, Myself and Mark began pulling lures on intermediate lines finding olive minkies with orange hot spots working best. A lot of follows to the bank and odd takes with only some fish locking up and landing them to the bank. Mark switched to the surface onto beetles and Sugar cube flys picking off a few moving feeding fish. However still nothing consistent seeming to work. We move over to Pimp/Bung Setup. Mark began catching on eggs straight away, where I worked through other patterns finding black to be working best. We moved up along the wood side of the lake covering various pegs. Where we got into some great action, fish after fish for both of us. All again on the Pimp/Bung Setup with the odd few on lures. Eggs and worm patterns working best on the Pimp setup for us. Ending a great tally of fish for both of us for our 5hrs fishing before returning home. Our next day soon, we plan to have some different dry patterns tied to cover feeding fish on small stuff coming off the surface that we noticed and see how we get on.
What’s Hot?
Airflo Super Stik 2 Competition
If you’re looking for a rod that can do everything from fishing dry flies on light tippets, to hauling out a long cast with heavy sinking lines, the Airflo SuperStik MK2 Comp Special fly rod is for you. It has more power and a deeper action, allowing you to cast a longer line and really put the pressure on when playing fish.
If you arrive to a bank venue and you see a lot of fish on the surface they can be difficult to catch when they are behaving like this. They can be behaving like this for one of 2 reasons First they are feeding in the top foot of water and you can target them at this level and possibly catch some of them. Secondly they are fresh stocked fish which will always spend the first week or 10 days in the top 12 to 18 inches of water and they can be difficult to catch. Sometimes you are better going through and fishing deeper for the older resident fish. A lot of anglers can spend a lot of time being very frustrated fishing the surface for those fish. When bank fishing if you get the correct depth for the actual feeding fish you are 75% of the way there to cracking a good day’s fishing.

A fairly dry weekend, much needed after last week’s deluge, was followed by more heavy rain and some flooding in the southeast this week. At least the decent weekend allowed anglers to get out and enjoy some autumnal sport, and we have some great angling reports from around the country to bring you this week.
Mist rising as the sun sets this week
Sea Angling
We start this week’s sea angling news with the fantastic win of the Irish under-16 team in the World Youths Shore Angling Championships last week in the Netherlands. What a brilliant bunch of young people, who worked their socks off and are now fully deserved world champions! The senior men’s team departed this week for the senior world championships in Sicily, and we will have news of their adventure over the next 2 weeks.
The whole team including team managers John Marshall and Brian Cooke
In Donegal Bay, bluefin tuna are still providing good sport, and Daryl Ewings’ guests enjoyed some tuna action, as well as god mixed fishing, with some nice ling. Check out this video of a tuna hitting a lure and jumping clear of the water!
In Galway Bay anglers on the Brazen Hussy, skippered by the newly-married John Fleming (congratulations!) enjoyed excellent mixed fishing, with good pollack and ballan wrasse feeding hard.
Killybegs Mariners had some great turbot fishing from the shore, with a rare pipefish also caught!
In club and competition news, Colin Harty won the Connacht Closed Gold Medal after a weekend of stiff competition in Co. Galway. The Slob Bank in Youghal was the venue for the Rebels SAC competition, where a late run of bass helped Jacob Murphy to the win.
Over on the east coast, South Shore SAC held a competition at Roney Point in Wexford, where plenty of whiting, dabs and bass kept anglers busy, and the result in doubt right to the finish.
Hunter’s Moon
Big tides this weekend with tomorrow’s full moon will see many bass anglers out on the coast – the bigger tides and more current often bring a big improvement in sport, so if you’re thinking of getting out, bass fishing may be well worth a go.
Pike Angling
The recent weather has made for difficult piking, with rivers bank high if not flooded, and many lake margins under water. This didn’t deter the Leinster Pike Anglers, who donned the chest waders to wade fish a number of nearby lakes for their competition.
Limerick County Pike Anglers had to head up country and fish a canal venue, with all their local lakes flooded out, and they found a few small fish, nothing big but enough to provide sport and competition. Lough Allua was the venue for the 22nd Lough Allua Pike Challenge recently, with flood waters hampering access ans port, though some nice fish to 88cm were caught on the day.
Elsewhere, the second leg of the Predator team qualifiers was held on Lough Erne in glorious sunshine, with Daniel Nesbitt and Danny Colleran coming out top, and some fantastic fish recorded.
A cracking pike for DanielAnd a fine perch for Jacek
Coarse Angling
Flood water is not good for coarse angling, and VDE Baggers had a tough outing in Newry, where cold, coloured water meant fish were not feeding well, and missed takes were crucial.
Munster Coarse Anglers held the first leg of their winter league at O’Briensbridge on th Shannon, where water levels 5 feet above normal (!) made for tricky conditions. Here though, the fish were still feeding well, and all anglers had decent catches, Steve Grogan taking the win with 13lb 11oz (last years champion starting were he left off!).
Steve Grogan at Obriensbridge
Team Ireland gained valuable experience at the inaugural European Feeder Cup, held in the UK, finishing 6th of 10 competing countries at a commercial venue where they were on a learning curve.
Trout Angling
Not much happening on the trout front at the moment, with many choosing to spend hours at the vice tying flies for next season, but Ardaire Springs is fishing well for stocked fish, and they held an event to launch the Irish Spring Angling Fair 2024 at the weekend.
Dan O’Neill took a look back at the trout season on the River Nore, which saw him practise streamer fishing a bit more than usual given the high water levels. Dan also has some upcoming courses for beginner and improving flyfishers.
The Ireland on the Fly podcast this talks to legendary Scottish fly tier Davie McPhail to discuss his career in fly fishing, how he got started in fly tying, his huge online following via YouTube, and he has some tips and advice for improving your fly tying.
Showers in the east and south becoming widespread this afternoon, with some heavy downpours and thunder possible. Tomorrow will be another day of sunny spells and showers, some heavy with a chance of thunderstorms and spot flooding. In the evening, cloud will thicken as a spell of rain pushes into the south and east, turning heavy in places. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in moderate south to southeast winds, backing easterly later and strengthening on eastern coasts. Tides will be very high along all coasts, increasing the risk of coastal flooding.
Sunday will see a wet start for most, rain gradually clearing westwards with sunny spells and showers following. Temps of 9-13C in mostly light variable winds. The sunhine/showers remain for Bank Holiday Monday, with some heavy downpours possible. 10-13C generally in light to moderate E/NE winds.
Continuing unsettled with further spells of rain and showers for the week. Possibly turning breezy at times too, and some models indicate a spell of possibly stormy weather later in the week.

The whole team including team managers John Marshall and Brian Cooke
Ireland’s Under-16s are Top of the World this week, after their fantastic win in last week’s World Shore Angling Championships, held in the Netherlands. This team were tipped for a medal from a long way out, counting some of the country’s top young shore anglers, and expertly coached by Brian Cooke and John Marshall. These youths have been honed by competing at club level with some of the top shore anglers in the world, and have been able to hold their own, so it was no surprise they did so well in the North Sea. Ahead of the competition, we featured the team in this post, and the profiles of the team are repeated below.
The team, now World Champions!
The team, comprising Kai Butler, Kaitlyn de Kleer, Nathan de Kleer, Cameron Gilbert, Max Roche and Liam David, set off with high hopes a couple of weeks ago. Practice went well, with the young anglers getting used to the venues and species, and honing their tactic, traces and bait presentation. Two second place finishes on the first two competition days saw them leading the competition at the halfway stage, narrowly ahead of the home country, France and England.
The third day proved tough, with Ireland finishing 5th, but the other top competitors also struggled, as Croatia jumped up the leaderboard into second, but Ireland held onto the lead and even extended their lead. Coming into the final day, Ireland could afford to finished no lower than third and they were guaranteed the gold medal. And they did it in style, winning the day and sealing an emphatic win by 4 points, ahead of Croatia in second and France in third.
Individual Glory
Nathan de Kleer was top of the Irish and also took the individual bronze medal, well done Nathan!

Check out the moment that Ireland were announced as World Champions. Great soundtrack to walk out to!
Team Profiles
Team profiles were provided by Pete Davis in the build up to the event.
Max Roche
Max Roche. Max hails from the sunny South East in Wexford and is something of a force of nature terrorising adults and juniors with equal aplomb on the East Coast beaches. I first met Max a couple of years ago at a leg of the Leinster League in Wicklow, pegged beside himself and his father JJ. I spent the next 4 hours having to run round like a lunatic to try and keep my nose in front as he pulled fish after fish beside me. One look at the results from the past couple of years of Leinster League legs will tell its own story. Max has represented Ireland in the past and packs a serious punch for his age, anyone who has seen Max flinging a lead out to the horizon usually only has one word… How?! Swiftly followed by Wow!
Liam Davis
Liam Davis. Liam lives in East Limerick and I am mighty proud to be his dad. This will be Liams first World Championships but the 3rd time he has represented Ireland, competing in the Home Nations in 2022 and 2023 flying the flag for Ireland with huge points hauls in both. Liam is an accomplished shore, boat and salmon angler since a young age. He has had the West Cork and District club members on the ropes on numerous occasions over the past number of years and has long since left me in his wake! Liam is the current Irish U16 shore champ and had the honor of being the holder both the Irish U16 shore and Boat angling trophies at the same time. A quiet, efficient angler with no fuss, quiet but absolutely lethal!
Kaitlyn de Kleer
Kaitlyn de Kleer. Kaitlyn comes from Munter Connaught, on the Cavan side of the Cavan/Meath border and it may well be the first time that we have 2 siblings on the same team with her brother Nathan also competing. Kaitlyn also has represented Ireland, not at U16 level but at Ladies Senior level in last years Home Nations in Weymouth aged just 13 where she more than held her own against much more experienced opposition. Kaitlyn competes in other sports, Gaelic Football and Equestrian events to a high level also. A fun loving, bright, positive addition to the team, underestimate Kaitlyn at your peril, she performed brilliantly in the fish offs to qualify.
Nathan de Kleer
Nathan de Kleer. Nathan, the elder de Kleer sibling is our 6’ 4 plus Dutch/Irish secret weapon. Nathan has been on 2 Irish Home Nations teams and I have had the pleasure of fishing and working with him on numerous occasions. A holy terror on the GAA field as well as the beach, there would be no one fancying competing for a high ball in midfield against this lad but a pure gentleman with a touch of mischief off the pitch. We are hoping Nate and Kaits Dutch heritage stands to us when it comes to the heat of battle in October. A super angler, utterly focused and committed when he has to be. In qualifying for last years Home Nations, Nathan fished a session in Sligo, hotfooted it back to Cavan, played the full 70 minutes for his club side before hammering back to catch the last hour of the second session and manage enough fish to secure his place. An absolute unit of a young fella who will have no qualms about taking on anyone when match day arrives.
Cameron Gilbert
Cameron Gilbert. Cameron comes from Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland and attends Carrickfergus Academy. I had the pleasure of spending time with him whilst he was competing with Ireland in the Home Nations last year in Weymouth. Cameron has won several Ulster U16 titles and this will be his second time pulling on the green jersey. Another of our young anglers that has the adults running for cover at club and open competitions. A quiet unassuming young fella, behind the quiet smile though is a super angler, he will hold his own in the Netherlands, no question about that.
Kai Butler
Kai Butler. Kai is another Wexford man, hailing from Duncannon. This will be Kais second time representing Ireland, he made his debut at this years Home Nations in Wales picking up a zone win against some serious competition in his first session as an international angler. Kai performed brilliantly at the fish offs to qualify, particularly in the first session where his ability to consistently pick up fish on a tough day held him in great stead. A touch of the rogue in Kai, he’s the comedian of the group, our Minister of Craic for the trip but a mighty fine angler also. It won’t be the last you hear of this young man.
The whole team including team managers John Marshall and Brian Cooke
Colin Harty from Galway Bay SAC is the new Connacht Closed Gold Medal winner, following last weekend’s series of competitions.
This past weekend, the beaches of Galway Bay became the backdrop for the much-anticipated Connaught Closed Gold Competition, hosted by Galway Bay SAC. The event spanned three distinct legs across the region’s renowned angling spots.
Leg 1: Lettergesh Beach – 21st October
Starting off on Lettergesh Beach, the gentle easterly breeze coupled with overcast conditions set the tone for the competition’s beginning. Kevin O’Hara made a flying start, with 322 points to take the leg win, while the rest of the competitors struggled for fish. Brian Reidy and Colin Harty were tied 2nd.
Small turbot, wonderfully camouflaged for a sandy bottom
Leg 2: Renvyle – 21st October (6-10pm)
As the evening drew in, Renvyle witnessed our competitors angling under the cover of darkness, bringing its own set of challenges and excitement. Colin Harty was a machine on the night, registering an impressive 1174 points, over 400 ahead of Eoin Joyce in 2nd, with Fiachra McKenna taking 3rd.
Leg 3: Glasillaun Beach – 22nd October
Glasillaun Beach, with its sunny intervals and a light northwesterly wind, provided a fitting conclusion to the competition. It was all to play for, but fish were very scarce, and veteran Sean Ivory eked out the win with 50 points, ahead of Colin aand Tom Keal, the only undr-23 competitor.
With the leg scores totted up, Colin Harty emerged as the clear winner. Colin has fished very consistently all year, adding the gold medal now to the club master angler title in Galway Bay.
Colin Harty (left) is presented with the Connacht Closed trophy by Brian Reidy
Sean Ivory finished in 2nd place, with Kevin O’Hara in third. The Connacht team for 2024 will be Colin, Sean, Kevin, Brian Reidy and Eoin Joyce.
The Connacht team (l-r): Brian Reidy, Kevin O’Hara, Colin Harty, Sean Ivory, Eoin Joyce

The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland is seeking expressions of interest from anglers interested in fishing the feeder at international level. The growing popularity of this discipline is reflected in the introduction of additional championships from FIPSed to include the Masters (2nd edition 2023) and at Under 25’s, which is a new addition for 2024!
Team Ireland Feeder have had much success on the world stage. In 2014, the team celebrated a historic silver medal win for Team Ireland on Inniscarra Lake, with Michael Buchwalder awarded the silver medal for his individual performance in Belgium 2022. But it’s the team medal overseas that Manager Brenton Sweeney yearns for as he returns to the role of International Feeder Manager after a short break.

2023 saw magnificent results at club level as Lurgan Coarse Angling Club won Gold at Lough Muckno to become the current World Club Feeder Champions with CM Lakelands winning Bronze.
