Good trout and pike taking trolled lures on Derg

pike

Senan Stanley, angler and YouTuber, has been been getting some great pike and trout fishing on Lough Derg recently…

pike

10 September: Productive morning on the jerkbaits! I hit the lake for a few hours before the thundery weather closed in, loads of activity. The best fish of the day came off just beside the boat but will find her next time!

Also absolutely wild to see a 30cm trout smash my 20cm line thru trout! Talk about predatory!

07 September: Out testing some new lures before Predator Battle Ireland in two weeks! Fingers crossed we can find some similar brownies when we actually need them!

Owenmore will fish well following next flood, rain forecast

Owenmore upper lakes

Frank Maunsell from Owenmore River on the Dingle Peninsula is expecting a some good fishing before the end of the season and with rain forecast he shouldn’t have to wait too long…

11th Sept 2023: The hot spell is finally over and hopefully we will get a decent flood before the Season ends.

There are still a good share of fish in the estuary both salmon and seatrout and some of them will surely move in the next flood.

Go fishing…

Pike angling adventure on Erne for West Cork bass guide

Dave Norman of Angling Adventures West Cork took a trip to Lough Erne to fry his hand a fly fishing for pike at the weekend…

Something different – Had a great day of Pike Fly on Lough Erne with Pike On The Fly Guide – Stuart Wylie who I enjoyed meeting at the Irish Spring Angling Fair earlier this year.

Full Sun and Baking heat in the high twenties wasn’t what we were hoping for but with Stuart’s expert guiding we connected with and boated this beauty which turned the scales to 22lbs 6 oz!

If you’re looking for guided Pike Fly Fishing or are thinking about giving it a try I’d highly recommend Stuart’s guiding service.

logoOnly a few dates available now for end of September, early October is also filling up. I repeat this at the start of every season. If you are a fly angler and haven’t experienced catching these remarkable fish from big wild loughs then you are seriously missing out on (in my opinion) our greatest sporting fish…

Good fishing in bad conditions for Edenderry anglers

Canal tench from Edenderry

When the Edenderry Coarse Angling Club organised their final club match of the season for a date in September, they didn’t think they would be fishing in 26°C of blistering sunshine, but that’s what we had to deal with on the day. With the Indian Summer, the venue on the Grand Canal had dropped a foot over the week and was running crystal clear – not god conditions for daytime fishing!

Despite the hot, bright weather, the low water and the clear water, the venue actually fishing well enough on the day, with bream and tench both helping to make up good weights for competing anglers. Top man on the day was Dean Murray with a lovely net one off the end.

Overall

  1. Dean Murray 17-00 Bream and Tench
  2. Tommy Burke 7-14 Roach
  3. Aidan Devoy 7-01 Tench
  4. Paul Kelly 6-06 mixed bag.

North Kildare Anglers finally fish their August Cup

After a long delay, the North Kildare Trout and Salmon Anglers Association got to fish their August Cup / Ger Dunne Competition. Eleven competitors turned up at 8:45 to draw for beats.

The forecast was for the mist to rise, some sunny spells and a chance of thunderstorms – and the forecasters got it spot on. The morning mist rose and gave way to blue skies, around 12pm this was to change with heavy showers and the sound of thunder in the distance. By 1:30pm most anglers were in the midst of a Thunderstorm.

As anglers took shelter, they reviewed their mornings fishing and hoped for better fishing for the afternoon. Some anglers had a few rising trout ahead of them whilst others did not see a fish rise all day. Dry fly and nymphs seemed to be the preferred tactic. With the fishing very hard, every fish was gonna count.

David May reported that he got his last fish minutes before having to leave for the measure up. At the measure up, it seemed like the river didn’t give up its bounty of trout easy – but those that were landed were proper, butter-bellied, wild Irish trout. More talk was about the downpours then catching, it was gonna be a close call. In the end, only two anglers only had the bag of 4 fish measured and it was Robbie Winder who won the competition, this was Robbie’s 1st competition to win although he has been very close in the past.

The final results are as follows.

  • 1) Robbie Winder
  • 2) David May
  • 3) Joe Winder
  • 4) Alan Lawless

The club runs competitions on a catch, photo and release basis. They are open to all adult members and are a great way to improve your fishing.

Menapia SAC go hound for hound in Wexford

Members of Menapia SAC had one of those nights last weekend when club anglers just turned up for their competition at the right beach, on the right night, with the right bait. A remarkable night’s fishing saw 65 smoothies landed by club members, as the large packs of hounds in the area hunted down the crab and ragworm baits as soon as they hit the sand. In fact, apart from a single dogfish and one pin whiting, it was hounds all the way as bites came thick and fast for those competing.

The venue was Furlong’s Road, Kilmore Quay, a venue that can fish brilliantly under the right conditions.

Brendan Wall and Sean Carley were head to head throughout the match with Brendan pulling a double shot of decent hounds to pip Sean on the last cast. Third and fourth place was also a head to head between Simon Doyle and Joe Carley with Simon coming out on top by a handful of points.

Top three on the night was

  • Brendan Wall 1059 pts
  • Sean Carley 998 Pts
  • Simon Doyle 856 Pts

Longest fish was Jerry Carbery – 102cm Hound

Four first tope and long awaited wreck trip for Wicklow Boat Charters

Skipper Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters welcomed four new angling guests in recent days, none of whom had landed a tope before. Not only did each of the newcomers get their first tope on the day, one of them – Chris Higgins – landed a specimen, a 45lb beauty.

Kit reckons there have been plenty of tope about this year along the Wicklow coast, with a good proportion of bigger ones amongst them. He also reckons that there are still good numbers of smoothies still about too, if you can get the peeler crab they prefer.

Kit also had a run offshore with Wicklow Bay SAC this week to target wreck fish. Despite very small neap tides, two hours of slack water and a short day they still got some quality ling, pollock, pouting, scad and some surprise huss.

Bass still about, bigger tides on the way

Cormac Walsh of The Lure Fishing Podcast reckons there have been some bass about over the last week, even though there have been some very slack tides. There was still a big ground swell present on the south east coast as a result of the previous big tides and this hampered his fishing on the usual coastal spots – meaning a trip up the estuary to search for a few fish.

Cormac ended up using the wrong rod by accident as he pulled it out out the van and didn’t realise until he was casting, when he was pleasantly surprised at how well the rod worked the surface lures. The rod is a Majorcraft 10ft, 7-45g he normally uses for heavier bass work. Although being 10ft, it only weighs 145g and is very smooth and slick to cast, so he really enjoyed using it.

There were a few fish around the top of the afternoon high tides with the Fishus Lures UK/Ireland Espitit doing the business once again.

New moon is nearly upon us again with some nice tides and decent weather – hopefully a few fish show up.

Opportunity for Women to be introduced to Angling

Pauline McClenaghan, Lead Instructor for the women’s Introduction to Fly Fishing Day
Pauline McClenaghan, Lead Instructor for the women’s Introduction to Fly Fishing Day

An exciting opportunity, for women interested in learning about fly fishing, will be happening at Laois Angling Centre on Saturday 23rd September.

The event has been organised by the Irish Ladies Flyfishing Association. It will include a short indoor introduction followed by 4 hours casting instruction and practice outside.

The course is aimed at beginners or novice anglers aged over 18 and all equipment will be provided.

No experience is necessary but booking is essential. Please visit www.irishladiesflyfishing.com for a booking form or mail Liz Dermott at [email protected]

Women will be travelling from all over Ireland to take part and full joining instructions will be sent to those who book.

Anne Kerrin Chair of the Irish Ladies Flyfishing Association said,

‘This is an amazing opportunity for women to learn about fly fishing. The benefits of angling have been known for a long time but it’s been a well kept secret. To be outdoors with nature surrounding you, in beautiful places, really gives a boost to your inner-being.

And most times it doesn’t matter if you catch a fish or not. The fish is a bonus. It’s also great exercise. Scrambling 5 miles up along a river bank and wading really works the inner core. I hope that this encourages women to think about trying out angling. All equipment will be provided and participants just need to wear warm clothes and to bring waterproofs.’

The Irish Ladies Flyfishing Association is a national organisation that encourages women to take up flyfishing and it runs a league of 4 trials annually to select a team to represent Ireland at the Ladies International Flyfishing Championships.

A hot snap but no salmon for Currane anglers

Hot! Hot! Hot!

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

6/9/2023 Sahara and high humidity, wind fresh SSE followed by gusts up to 57 km/h are today’s angling headlines, you could say today’s report is slack as were the Currane anglers.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

7/9/2023 No reports of any rod benders, I wonder why, I will tell you why for starters the sun was blazing down with hardly a cloud in site. So you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that it was a beach of a day. Just for the record the air temperature in Caherdaniel was 32c. Wind fresh SE and variable followed by gusts up to 30 km/h.

Dingle Bay

8/9/2023 Another scorcher for South Kerry today, all I have to say, coming home from North Keery this evening around 9 pm the temperature was 21c. I will leave the rest of today’s facts to your imagination, I can tell you my WhatsApple was quiet.  Wind light to fresh SSE and veered S.

9/9/2023 The Salmon and Sea Trout as well as the Waterville Fishery / Currane anglers had another day of sunstroke but at least there is good news on the horizon as Sahara heat leaves the Emerald Isle? Time will tell. The pictures tell the story of the day as you can see by the pictures, mind you it wouldn’t surprise me if there was the odd fish caught but going by my WhatsApple tonight’s notes stay negative. Wind light SSW and variable.

10/9/2023 The temperature dropped a little for the Currane anglers but to be fair it was still very warm, once the sun broke through the fog this morning it was bright and sunny for the rest of the day, followed by a light wind ESE veered NW.

11/9/2023 My WhatsApple was all quiet on all fronts as the light showers as normal temperatures comes back to the Emerald Isle. Wind light SW veered WNW and veered again into the North for the rest of the afternoon.

12/9/2023 Again all quiet on all fronts. Wind NW light followed by bright sunshine all day, so on that note we will go back into the Sahara weather of last week and for good reason, I got some great info from Mr. Ruary Rudd of Waterville, so the stage is yours Ruary.

Hi Vincent, attached are macro photos of the ‘Sahara’ dust. I would have expected a smoother due to years of abrasion. It has been suggested that the particles are from a volcano such as recently erupted in La Palma.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks
