Charter boat anglers fihsing out of Courtmacsherry are getting good fishing over wrecks, shark action and more…
07 September: Anglers fishing with Courtmacsherry Sea Angling Centrehad 15 blues for the Bristol boys today biggest for Hugh , plenty of fine size fish today

08 September: Dave Edwards, skipper at West Cork Charters found himself a long way South last night on the Cornish/Cork border! One angler had never caught a shark before and within 15 minutes of cutting Silver Dawns engines, he had a Porbeagle and a Blue. Both as small as you’re likely to see but size doesn’t always matter.

We didn’t put a trail out as shark wasn’t our planned target for the night, they had other ideas though and eventually we gave up and toasted the sunset. Some nice Whiting and Ling this morning and also a couple of feathered passengers that were struggling with their migration in the morning fog.
An early start was need to make the most of the offshore wrecks and plenty of coalfish and big ling were hooked but the anglers could not escape the sharks all day long. They battled hard to bring fish to the boat but the sharks got the better of them everytime. The skipper helped them pick out few the bigger sharks to bring on board and tag. Mighty crack was had for sure !!
11 September:West Cork Charters were sitting at anchor in Courtmacsherry Bay with the Skate research team. The Skate didn’t playing ball but there plenty of smaller feed fish around and a specimen Bullhuss was an unexpected bonus.

Notes:The range of fishing found within close range of Courtmacsherry is superb, with trips producing anything between 6 and 15 different species as a norm and in excess of 20 is possible if anglers are prepared to change methods and use different baits and lures throughout their trip. As a rule mackerel, pollock, cod and ling are usually encountered but several species of wrasse along with whiting, pouting, coalfish, bull huss, conger and many more are often added to the catch.
If you do choose to head offshore to sample the superb shark fishing available within 10 miles of Courtmacsherry, there is a very strong chance of encountering blue sharks and an increasing chance of bringing a porbeagle shark to the boat.
Courtmacsherry Sea Angling Centre offers charter boat fishing and inshore small boat hire.

The Nore system is holding its water well after that blast of sunshine. The gauge at Mount Juliet is reading 0.323 and that is an ideal level for this time of year. We are well into Autumn now and fish are beginning to move back in the runs to the flats and glides readying themselves for the long winter, reserving energy and fat levels.
This time of year I find a team of spiders can be super successful for searching out those long flats. A team of Partridge & Orange, Gold greenwells, and a purple and Jungle cock would go down a treat. Sometimes I’ll even put a beaded spider on the point to fish them a little deeper. It won’t be long till we see the return of the afternoon rises also.
Mark Driver was out on the Nore during the weekend coaching a gang of youths who are competing in the National finals next week and they had great sport. They were mostly Nymphing. The Hends 233 Gasolina perdigone, and an olive nymph with an orange butt taking most of the fish for the lads.
They did report seeing a good few rising fish throughout the day. Its great to see a group of young lads on the river having some fun. We hope to have another open day for youths in the coming weeks on the river or early Oct on a lake.
Hends 233 Gasolina Perdigone
The Kings River is reporting to be fishing well and there was still a really good evening hatch up till 2 days ago, with some good fish moving. I am not sure how long this will last now as we are seeing a real change in the weather.
For anyone interested in a bit of sea angling I was walking along Slade head by Hook lighthouse Sunday evening with the kids and the sea was exploding with mackerel all over the place. I might go down an evening over the next few days with the fly rod for a bit of sport. Here is a few Mackerel fly’s that have worked really well for me this season.

Following an epic weekend of hardcore pike fishing at the Lough Ree King of the Lake competition, where 82 teams battled it out for the title ‘Kings of the Lake’, it was the Powells – Steven and Andy – who took the title with a top 3 fish of 300cm.
Kings of Lough Ree
1 of 2
It was a spectacular sight to see on both competition days, as the 80+ boats lined up outside Ballyleague Marina to await the starting siren – then throttling down to all corners of Lough Ree once the signal came.
The competition days offered contrasting conditions to further challenge the competitors, as Saturday was a day for sun cream and Sunday brought warnings for thunder, meaning that organisers had to scramble to prepare for the possibility of calling a halt to fishing should a lightning warning come into effect.
In the end, both days went smoothly and, while there were no truly gigantic Lough Ree monsters to enhance the tales told at the Yacht Bar on either evening, there were plenty of really good fish caught to keep the competition close.
The Powell winning team recorded 300cm of pike made up of a 104cm, 100cm and 96cm trio – enough to take the top honours by a mere 2.5cm from their nearest rivals. In total, there were 18 metre plus fish caught by anglers over the two competition days – the best 106.5cm – which was pretty good considering the contrasting weather during the event.
Fifteen of the best feeder anglers in the land qualified for the Feedermasters Final, which was held on Lough Muckno on Sunday, September 10th. Six qualifiers had been held over the past eight weeks at various venues to sort out the wheat from the chaff. On the final day, it was on form Darren Fairhurst who took the big win and eclipsed a formidable field of feeder anglers.
Darren had11.5kgs off peg 196 to win by a full 1.5 kgs and scoop the significant prize fund and more importantly the Irish Feedermasters title. In second spot was Rimantas Kondrakas, who just held off the very competitive Stephen Whyte. Fourth on the podium went to Paul Leese, making it an impressive clean sweep for members of the C/M Lakelands Feeder Club in the top 4 spots.

After a week that began with blistering sunshine and ended with violent thunderstorms, the Belturbet September Festival, organised by the Belturbet Angling and Conservation Club, came to a close on Friday, September 8th.
Thirty six anglers had taken to the banks of five local lakes – expertly pre baited and pegged in advance of the event – to thrash it out over five days and it was the early leader, John Potters, who improved as the event went on and win outright with over 200lbs by day 5 – a good 50lbs more than the nearest competitor.
Top Five:
John Potters 202lbs 14oz
Julian Kendrick 152lbs 03oz
Stephen Leddy 146lbs 01oz
Mark Theedom 139lbs 11oz
Nicky Harrison 127lbs 03oz
The organisers would like to thank the following people:
Irish Bait and Tackle Limited have pulled out all the stops and the Belturbet Festival committee and all of the people who fish in are local area would be lost without them.
Inland Fisheries Ireland without your continued support we could not run these events and with your help in the future we will continue to improve not only match but pleasure angling in our small part of paradise.
Lastly – the landowners who allow access. Without whose continued support it would not be possible to run these events you truly are the hero’s of these festivals and let no one forget it. A Thanks to everyone who has helped and hoping everyone has tight lines all week.
Today, Friday, September 8th, is likely to be the hottest day ever recorded in Ireland in the month of September. If you live in parts of Kilkenny, the weather sages have predicted that your thermometer might top 31°C today – two full degrees above the previous record (29.1°C) – which was set in Clongowes, Co. Kildare, in 2009. The weather record-breaking has become a regular occurrence and it doesn’t make for great reading; 2022 was our warmest year on record, March of 2023 was our wettest March, June was our hottest June, July was our wettest July. We are a week into September, we’ll have to wait and see what records it brings…

The forecast will also be hot for tomorrow, the second Saturday in September – also known as International Women’s Fly Fishing Day. At 11am, in every time-zone across the world, female fly-anglers will post photos or videos of themselves to Facebook or to Instagram that will show their enjoyment of fly fishing – so make sure and get involved. For more information please visit International Women’s Fly Fishing Day on Facebook or email [email protected]. Alternatively, you can listen to our very own Irish international Maddy Kelly – one of the driving forces behind the initiative – as she chats with the Ireland on the Fly team about the day and how the obstacles to women in fly fishing are finally breaking down.

Back to Kilkenny now, where we’ll start the fishing reports this week on the Nore in Thomastown. After a washout of a summer, Peter Driver of Piscari-Fly has issued the first of what he hopes to be a regular newsletter, with news of trout fishing in Thomastown and on the Nore catchment. Needless to say, it was the ever reliable dry-dropper that did the damage for Peter this week. Also on the rivers was Paddy Dunworth, who guided his American guest to some Limerick trout using his newly-acquired upstream dry-fly skills. On the loughs, like Conn and Cullin, there has been limited angling activity, but those who have ventured out have been rewarded.
A fine September salmon from the Blackwater Valley Fishery – kept in the water to recover well
On the pike fishing scene, Canadian anglers met their targets while fishing with Anglers’ Paradise recently – catching both wild Irish trout and pike on Lough Derg. Further upstream, there was a big event held on Lough Ree last weekend, where 60 anglers fished the Lough Ree Predator Challenge, and an even bigger one is taking place this weekend, where 85 boats and 240 anglers will battle it out to become the King of the Lake. The organisers would like to remind everyone taking part in the event that, in line with the law, the wearing of life jackets is COMPULSORY by every person in every boat in the event on both days, otherwise they will face disqualification. Suncream is also advised….
If you have an angling story to share with the Irish Angling Update please send it to [email protected] and don’t forget that all of our fishing reports are available on our dedicated Angling Ireland Facebook page.
And now the weather…

A fine September salmon from the Blackwater Valley Fishery - kept in the water to recover well
It’s been another very quiet week on the Munster Blackwater. Last week’s rain saw a small rise on the 3rd of September but since then the bright, hot conditions have not been to the anglers advantage. Noel from the Blackwater Valley Fishery reports and has some good advice for anglers fishing at this time of year…
03 September: With the season coming to a close it is nice to see some good fish been caught from our fishery. What wonderful colours this time of year. Remember if returning fish give them plenty of time to recover in the water before releasing them. Use the net if needed.
This September salmon was photographed in the water to maximise its chance of a strong recovery
