Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters reports on the recent fishing onboard his boat the Silver Dawn:
The last two weeks have seen a mix of distant wreck and shark fishing, and the last four days we have had families out amongst the fish. Henry O’Flynn caught some fine Pollack out with his parents, and Katie and James Lynn got amongst the shark with their dad Sean.
Henry and mum with fine Pollack
Our best fish this week was undoubtedly Conor Ward’s 130lb + specimen Blue was the stand-out fish, with brother Sean and dad Nick also getting amongst the shark.

West Cork Charters operates the Silver Dawn, a 41′ Rodman 1250 with twin 430 HP Engines out of Courtmacsherry. The range of fishing found within close range of Courtmacsherry is superb, with trips producing anything between 6 and 15 different species as a norm and in excess of 20 is possible if anglers are prepared to change methods and use different baits and lures throughout their trip. As a rule mackerel, pollock, cod and ling are usually encountered but several species of wrasse along with whiting, pouting, coalfish, bull huss, conger and many more are often added to the catch.
If you do choose to head offshore to sample the superb shark fishing available within 10 miles of Courtmacsherry, there is a very strong chance of encountering blue sharks and an increasing chance of bringing a porbeagle shark to the boat.
Just as most of us were giving up hope, the cloud, cold and wind all departed for more northerly climes last week, leaving Ireland basking in mostly warm, dry and sunny weather for a prolonged period. This is the first spell of settled weather we have had all summer, and it looks set to continue with temperatures forecast to rise over the weekend and into next week.
Settled weather systems are a boon to the charter fleet & small boat operators, as the calmer conditions allow them to get out to sea more often, and to travel further afield to less fished marks. The influence of this settled spell can be seen in the sharp pick-up in reports of good fishing from all around our shores, so it’s no surprise they make the bulk of this week’s update.
Further again up the west coast, Newport SAC were delighted to host the 2022 National Junior Competition / Daniel Peacock Memorial on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd of July. A total of 33 junior anglers competed for the trophy, and judging by the smiles in the photos, all had a super time on the water. Coming out on top, with a total of 37 fish which earned her 185 points was local angler, Holly McGee. Congratulations to all who took part, and we hope to see you feature in these pages again as you continue your angling journey. And to mark Holly’s great achievement, she wins this week’s Catch of the Week award.
To wrap up the sea angling report, there was some great news last week as the Irish team pulled off a brilliant win in the Home Nations Shore Championships held in Weymouth. It’s always difficult to win on foreign soil as the local knowledge of the home team usually helps them prevail. But in a hard-fought and tight competition, the Irish lads just pipped the English team to the title. The junior team went pretty close too, making it a great weekends work for the Irish.

The bright sunny weather that can work wonders for sea angling generally has the opposite effect on fishing in freshwater, as fish shy away from the intense light and become more lethargic due to lower oxygen levels. Anglers fishing over the coming days should bear that in mind, as all fish will be that bit more vulnerable during the hot weather we are promised. Coarse anglers, in particular, should consider whether they need to use a keepnet, as a lot of fish crowded together can mean some fish will struggle to survive. Anglers, too, should take care under a hot sun, and I’ve seen plenty of red faces and farmers’ tans in photos of anglers who were out in the sunny spell last week…
So, to coarse angling, and anglers up in Belturbet were doing some reconnaissance fishing ahead of their festival later in the year. They were looking for new venues and decided to try an old spot that had not been used in years. Well, the fallow period seems to have worked wonders as they hit into some impressive bream fishing, with one angler, Roger Baker, landing 9 bream for 45lb in addition to plenty of roach and hybrids.
Trout fishing tends to be tough in bright hot weather, particularly if fishing on the loughs. However, anglers venturing out on Lough Conn last week were pleasantly surprised to find the trout quite active. There were smatterings of mayfly hatching off, and the trout responded well, and any angler that ventured out reported good fishing.
Paul Caslin released this good trout outside Gallaghers Bay, Lough Conn, caught on an Invicta.
Friday afternoon will see sunny spells with temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. It will remain dry overnight and into Saturday, with temperatures rising to 26°C in places during the day. Sunday will be very warm and dry, with temperatures reaching the high twenties in places, and it will remain warm on Sunday night and into Monday, where temperatures could reach 30°C. Tuesday will begin in the same fashion, but the weather will break during the day as heavy thunder showers spread northwards during the day.

Kevin O’Boyle reports on the weeks fishing on Loughs Conn & Cullin:
Despite the windy cool weather, trout angling improved a little. Some Mayfly were seen hatching in sheltered bays and trout were taking them off the surface. All anglers that ventured out had some good results.
Paul Caslin, Ross and Peter Gray, Castlebar had some good fishing in Gallaghers Bay and Chain Island. They reported a lot of fish to the boat with over half of them to the measure. Successful flies included the Invicta, Green Peter and Claret Dabbler. They had 4 good trout estimated around 2 lbs and all fish were returned.

Stephen Browne, Cloghans and Francie White, Sligo had one of their best days of the season in Cloghans and the Brackwansha shore. They had numerous trout to the boat of which 6 were over 1.5 lbs. All fish were caught on wet green Mayflies and were all returned.
Peter Roche from Cloghans, also fished with Francie White the following days and had some good angling in a strong westerly breeze along Coleman Shallows, into Massbrook Bay and also in Castlehill Bay. They boated a lot of fish with over half to the measure. Their best fish for the day was 1.5 lbs to a green Mosley and all fish were returned.
A trout released by Peter Roche, at Coleman Shallows.
Eric Traynor, Sydney & Crossmolina fishing with his brother Padraic, had some good sport along Brackwansha shore and Commorant Rocks, reporting 4 trout to the measure and 1 grilse for 3 lbs to the fly, all released.
Best flies for the week included Green Peter, Green Mayflies, Green Mosley, Invicta, Stimulators and Dabbler patterns.
Kevin O’Boyle reports on the fishing on the Moy catchment for the week ending 10th July:
374 salmon were reported caught in the Moy catchment for the week. 63 of these fish were reported as being released from various fisheries. Water levels were way down on previous weeks’ floods, and back to more normal levels for the time of year. On Monday morning, water levels at Ballylahan bridge were 0.564M and slowly dropped to 0.356M by the end of the week. Water temperatures ranged from 10.7˚Celcius to 12.9˚Celsius throughout the system.
The Moy Fishery recorded 12 salmon and 1 sea trout caught for the week of which 3 salmon were released. 9 of the salmon were caught in the Ridge Pool and 2 salmon were caught in the Cathedral Beat. Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 20 grilse from 2-5 lbs mostly caught on worms. Mount Falcon Fishery reported 30 salmon for the week. Gary Perks from the UK had 4 salmon over 2 days on the prawn of which he released 3, the best fish weighing 4 lbs.
Peter Kavanagh with a 4.75 lbs salmon caught on the Ridge Pool (A special thanks goes to Chris Ryan for providing the successful fly)
Knockmore Salmon Anglers recorded 5 grilse for the week. Attymass Anglers reported 8 grilse, the best weighing 5 lbs. Coolcronan Fishery had 27 grilse for the week mostly caught on the prawn and spinning. Byrnes Fishery recorded 1 salmon for 5 lbs. Armstrong’s Fishery had 11 salmon for the week mostly on bubble & fly. Gannon’s Fisheries had 9 for the week. The Foxford Fishery reported 68 grilse, mostly caught spinning. Foxford Salmon Anglers reported 37 from their waters. Reports from Foxford town waters say that at least 4 grilse were caught for the week. Cloongee Fishery reported 47 grilse caught with 12 released.
Markus from Germany releasing a fish in Jack’s Pool on the Foxford Fishery.
East Mayo Salmon Anglers recorded 80 salmon for the week with 44 released. The heaviest fish of the week were caught by Shane Gainley, Castlebar who caught an 8 lbs salmon on a Toby and John Node, Meelick who caught an 8 lbs salmon on a fly, which he released.
Reports from the River Deel state that at least 4 salmon were caught, all spinning.
Reports from Lough Conn suggest that at least 5 salmon were caught, mostly trolling. One salmon was reported caught on the fly, and subsequently released.
This report from Declan Moran of Newport Sea Angling Club from their recent junior competition:
After a two year absence due to Covid, Newport SAC were delighted to host the 2022 National Junior Competition / Daniel Peacock Memorial on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd of July 2022.
This year’s competition was fished over two days in the beautiful surrounds of Clew Bay. It was great for the parents, club members and junior anglers to meet once again on the quayside on both mornings to find out who they would be fishing alongside for the day and discuss their tactics. As always our highly paid chefs were on hand to provide a freshly cooked sausage roll and a hot cup of tea for all participants. Each group assembled for a photo before all of the young junior anglers (& helpers) boarded the boats to head out to sea.
A group of anglers ready to head out to sea on board the Whitewater II on Saturday morning
The weather conditions on both days could be best described as challenging but they all braved the difficult sea conditions. The various boats reported decent catches over the two days and it seemed as if there was very little between the boats on their return to the quay. The charts were gathered by the committee members as the long and arduous task of working out the various category winners began behind the scenes. The Junior anglers were welcomed back onto the pier by their parents and the prize presentation was held in Nevins Bar, Newport.

At Sunday evening’s prize presentation, local angler Holly McGee was crowned National Junior Champion with a total of 37 fish and 185 points. Holly was presented with the Daniel Peacock Memorial Trophy in front of the large attendance of anglers parents and club members to rapturous applause. Holly’s last entry into this competition saw her finish runner up in the 8 to 13yrs category and this time around she went one better by finishing in top place. Holly was one of 33 junior anglers, all aged between 8 and 18 years of age, took part in this year’s event. Our congrats to Holly on her brilliant achievement from all at the club!
Local angler Holly McGee was the overall winner of the 2022 National Junior Competition / Daniel Peacock Memorial Angling competition seen here being presented with her prize by Sue Steer (Daniels grandmother), Ann Taylor (Daniels gran aunt) and Nanny Dawe (Daniels great grandmother). Holly had a total of 37 fish and 185 points on the day
This annual Junior competition is now in its 30th year and this year also marked the 17th anniversary of the Daniel Peacock Memorial competition. The club’s very first competition dedicated to the Junior members began back in 1992 and has been held every year since. As this was the 30 year anniversary of the competition it is worth expressing our gratitude to the pioneers of the club committee back in 1992 and their foresight in laying the foundations of this hugely successful event. It is also an opportunity to thank the various committee members, anglers, parents and sponsors who over the years have helped to make this event so special for so many young anglers.

A group of anglers heading out to sea on board the Lady Helen with club mentor Shane Gilvarry.
Jim Clohessy had an urge to chase haddock and whiting so he pushed offshore to some likely ground. Fishing with friends he had a steady stream of haddock and whiting interspersed with some ling and pollack, red gurnard and even the ubiquitous blue whiting. Most interesting on the day more haddock were caught on lures than bait. Jim was so busy catching fish that he forgot to take many pictures!
In Jim’s own words, “We had more haddock and big whiting (up to 2.5lb) than you could shake a stick at. Superb angling.”
Care needed at slip ways
Jim also added this warning: Be extra wary on slipways. Even the usually impeccable Paddy’s Point was treacherous at low tide. I have heard of a few slips and near accidents with trailers and people even getting hurt. So be careful out there.
A birthday pollack for John
Also out and about was Richie Ryan of Eire Bass who fished with John Pythian from the UK. John celebrating his 50th birthday at the weekend and headed to the water to mark the day. For his efforts he had some lovely pollack on fly.
Why not try fishing from the first licensed saltwater fly-fishing boat in Ireland in the second largest natural harbour in the world? Your guide, Commander Richie Ryan Retd. , has built up a huge knowledge of bass fishing, over the last 30 years.
Notes: With a purpose built boat he is insured to carry up to 3 anglers. Bass and pollock on the fly are the main target species.
Young and old are welcome and if you have no knowledge of fly-fishing, other methods are available. Richie has been responsible for a vast number of clients catching that elusive first ever bass.
Anyone who knows John Fleming, skipper of the Brazen Hussy II, knows he loves his shark fishing. So much so he named his business Blue Shark Angling Galway. John has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of sharks to the bay, and this week he had the right crew on board.
The anglers – Andy ,Conor, Paul and Gavin brought 3 nice porbeagles to the boat, and had 3 or 4 more dropped runs. Porbeagles, for the uninitiated, are like a miniature version of a great white. Well, we say miniature, but these powerful sharks can go to well over 300lbs. And anyone who has played a good porbeagle knows the sheer power they have. I certainly do – my back remembers!
A decent porbeagle brought to the side of the boat. Most are released here to avoid unnecessary handling.Let’s do battle! Getting stuck into a porbeagle
The following day saw 2 more sharks landed, both porbeagles again, no sign of blues yet. Both fish came to Andy’s rod; the first fish approx. 80-90lbs was released at the side of the boat. An hour or so later and after a couple of drops Andy hooked into a bigger fish which gave a really good account of himself. The fish wrapped in the leader at the end so it was decided to boat the fish to untangle it and get it back safely. And time for a quick photo of course!
Andy with one of his porbeaglesFish on!
Before all shark hell broke loose, John’s anglers were enjoying good mixed fishing earlier in the week, with plenty of whitefish producing great sport.

Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing.
The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and released safely.

Great fishing once again to report from west Clare, where local charter boats have been mixing it up with plenty of species. Skipper Luke Aston says the spurdog fishing has been tremendous, with packs of fish up to 18lbs providing lots of action. While the spurs have been very active, after a while Luke had to move to try to find other species, who didn’t get a chance at the baits while the spurs were around.
Spurdog
Luke had a couple of day charters over the weekend, and good mixed fishing was the result. These two young brothers enjoyed their trip, catching their first tope each.
Two happy men with one of their tope
A session at anchor also produced some nice thornback ray.
