South Shore SAC Master Angler Series

South Shore SAC held the sixth round of their Master Angler series last Saturday on the Murrow beach, Wicklow. This report from the club:

We were fishing 18.00 to 23.00 on a rising tide and expectations were high. Fishing the Wicklow beaches in June always gives good fishing and never disappoints. The Murrow beach gives shelter from the heavy tide runs experienced on beaches just north of Wicklow. The other beaches get drifting weed, which can be a pain and limit bait time in the water. Wicklow is almost the perfect match venue with no real hot spots, as the winner can come from anywhere along the stretch. It does however have one drawback – the sewage works behind the beach belch out gut wrenching smells and is not for the weak of tummy. Any wind with westerly in it will fill your nostrils a glorious pungent smell.

Enough of the smelly stuff, we had a pleasant evening weather wise with no rain, it was a little gusty to start with but that died down and the sun dropped in the best summer wind fashion.

Everyone was expecting a glut of dogfish as in previous competitions on this beach at this time of year in the past. Sandeel baits blasted to the horizon on first casts came back untouched for me, Thomas Keogh the (great white) got a double dog on his first cast which set the scene for the next couple of hours. He certainly capitalised on his uncanny ability the catch dogfish and finished with 12 of the spotty yokes. Thomas finished with 26 fish and the high points accumulated with the 12 doggies gave him the win over Niall who had 29 fish, hard luck Niall.

Whiting as always turned up in numbers on the top of the tide and proved difficult to get in size once your topper uppers were filled. There was a good variety  of fish on show with Ray’s, LSDs, whiting, Dabs, Plaice, Gurnard (grey and tub) – no sign of a smooth hound though.

What’s the score?

We had two juniors fishing on Saturday, we put them together on the beach in a novel idea that we will incorporate going forward so that they could compete in the same area against each other. Daniel and Evan had a ding dong battle all night, Evan getting the first fish – a ray. Daniel came back true to form and and streaked ahead mid way through the session with a doggie and a number of whiting. On the home stretch Evan pulled a number of double counters the secure the win. Great fishing young lads, the future of match angling is bright.

Dean Costello was on his usually spot on Wicklow, and murdered fish in zone B. He had a good number of ray and doggies, topped up with gurnard and whiting.

Picture below shows Alby’s half a whiting, so there must have been a few tope running, and he was lucky not to lose his rod!

Well that’s it for a couple of months till September for our next club match, so hope you all have a lovely summer.

North Kildare TSAA fish the Furlong and Coughlan Cup

The North Kildare Trout & Salmon Anglers Association fished their Furlong and Coughlan competition on the River Liffey on a windy and overcast Sunday, June 12th. The wind made for challenging conditions at times, but sixteen anglers still managed to catch, measure and release forty one hard-fighting, wild Liffey trout.
Competition winner Seamus ‘Chilly’ Byrne (left) receives his trophy

Muckno Feedermasters Qualifier 1 Results

Sunday, June 12th, saw the first Feedermasters qualifier on ever reliable Lough Muckno and it didn’t disappoint, even though participation was reduced to thirty three anglers due to a number of other pre planned events.

Three sections were used, including Concra upper, a section that was won with 6kg plus  by Peter Horbinski our first 2022 qualifier. Black Island yielded quality nets to several quality anglers, with a number over 20 kgs, but topped by a mighty 41.560kgs from star angler, Mantas Tam. This is certainly one of the best early season weights from Lough Muckno in some time, especially over 5 hours and from a virgin peg, in early June. Surely top angler Andrew Cooke, with his fine 21 kgs just 5 pegs along was shocked, when he witnessed the super winning weight of Mantas.

Good bream were a feature of the day’s fishing

Darren Fairhurst didn’t disappoint once again; he won Section C, Yellow Island, with a big weight of 15.540kgs to see him through to the grand final.

Well done to all anglers who competed in testing conditions which yielded commendable performances and fine weights throughout – especially with some magnificent bream on many pegs today over the length of the western shores of this great lough.

With the roach now also returning in great numbers the fishing will again this year make for some of the most prolific and engaging competition in these islands.

Top 4 paid out:

  • 1st Mantas Tam 42.560 kgs
  • 2nd Andrew Cooke 20.640kgs
  • 3rd Robertas 16.819 kgs
  • 4th Darren Fairhurst 15.540 kgs.

Anglers who qualified are:

  • A Peter Horbinski
  • B Mantas Tam
  • C Darren Fairhurst

First bass in West Cork for high flying Nigel

Nigel in flying form with his first bass

David Norman of West Cork Bass guided his client, Nigel Larke, to a pair of firsts during their recent Saltwater Fly Workshop together. Killing two birds with the one stone, Nigel managed to land his first bass – which was also caught on the fly.

Nigel in flying form with his first bass

Most bass anglers catch their firsts on bait or lure and only a small percentage are ever inclined to go after them with a fly rod but Nigel, who is an experienced trout angler, wanted to transfer his fly skills to the salt and it was great for David to be a part of his early success…

Veteran pike angler keeps reeling in the years

North East angling guide Peadar O’Brien had a veteran pike angler out for a few days pike fishing recently. Jean Feinte from France has been coming to Ireland to fish for many years, and at 83 years old he has plenty of years behind him… Fishing with lures, they found the pike to be very active and had some great fishing over the week, with plenty of fish to 103cm. Let’s hope we see Jean back here next year.

High wind and bright sunshine undo good rain on Owenmore

Owenmore River, Cloghan

Frank Maunsell reports from the Owenmore Fishery in Kerry where rain finally fell at the end of last week:

10 June: We finally got rain on the night of the 8th and into the early hours of the 9th. When I checked the water level at 5:30am there was about a rise of 2½ feet and by 1:00 pm it had dropped by a foot.

There were some fish met during the day but none landed. The bright sunshine did not help.

Today there was still enough water on it and one local man had 2 grilse and a couple of seatrout. It was tough fishing as the wind was reaching 10 metres a second.

Tony Green wins Arva Senior Festival with a brilliant performance

Arvagh

Last week saw the return of the Arva Seniors festival after over a two year absence due to the pandemic, it was great to see all the anglers familiar faces along with a few first timers.

The 40 anglers in attendance consisted of anglers from all around Ireland, the UK,and France, and were faced with tough conditions for the week. The weather often feeling more like November than early June, very heavy rainfall through the week, with at times gale force northerly winds made for uncomfortable days on the bank. This together with a late spawning time this year due to a particularly cold spring meant that the fish were not around in their usual big numbers, despite this the anglers still managed some reasonable weights.

It quickly became apparent that Kevin’s Shore was the place you needed to make the most of as this is where the top weights came from for the week with good bream, hybrids, and perch all coming on the feeder, top daily weight of the week was 25kg coming to festival regular Julian Kendrick, but it was the ever consistent Tony Green who took top spot over the week winning the festival with a brilliant performance.

Silver Dawn gets first blue of 22 – that’s three years in a row

Tadgh and first blue shark of 2022
Tadgh and first blue shark of 2022

Charter fishing boat Silver Dawn has caught the first reported blue shark of 2022. This is the third year in a row this boat has reported the first blue shark of the year.

Tadgh O’Reilly of Shannonvale was fishing with Dave Edwards onboard the Silver Dawn out of Courtmacsherry earlier today when he caught a 185cm blue shark.

As a long time angler Tadgh, who will be 75 next month, is no stranger to shark fishing and has previously seen the first shark of the year caught. In fact, back in 2020 his son Conor caught the first in Ireland.

What makes the capture even more special as this is the third year in a row that the first shark of the year has been reported by the Silver Dawn.

The shark was tagged as part of the Marine Sport Fish Tagging Programme and swam away strongly.

This wasn’t the only shark of the trip and second was caught soon after. Hopefully this will see the start of some memorable shark fishing off Ireland’s coast this year.
