Triggers, smooth hounds & mullet for Killybegs Mariners

Killybegs Mariners report…

More crazy fishing for the Mariners crew with specimen smoothhound from the Donegal Bay shore which is a species that would be considered a real rarity for the angler around these parts.

A lovely fish for Daragh of almost 100cm landed to start things off and another fish bust the snood. Then a fish of 106cm which is over specimen length for Cormac which both gave serious runs before measure and release. Later in the week, more hounds were caught by David and Darren getting the reels screaming. Great fishing and nice to get the first smooth hounds on the local beaches!

Elsewhere, an amazing sight greeted the crew as they landed to a rock mark and first thing they saw was a shoal of triggerfish patrolling along the rocks. Quickly throwing the rods together and slapping on float and traces Johnny and Diarmuid got the shoal feeding and these powerful fish busted several snoods before Diarmuid McCallig landed a first local trigger after years of trying for them by several anglers!

Triggerfish for Diarmuid McCallig

The local harbour can also provide some quality fishing. With a slice of bread and a float some quality harbour mullet were landed by the lads providing equal joy and frustration trying to tease a take.

Nice mullet for Christopher

Philip Jackson had a great start to the Championships which saw his team win
Philip Jackson, Lurgan Blues, had a great start to the Championships

The championships opened with a bang as Philip Jackson’s top match weight of 16kg from Yellow Island consisted of 175 fish and a bonus bream. Lurgan Coarse Angling Club’s BLUE team otherwise had 3rd’s in section putting them in second position against CM Lakelands Feeder Club’s Gold team, who were just 2 points ahead.

A solid performance from Lurgan saw off the two point lead of CM Lakelands Gold ending with a points tie leaving the latter runners-up 3kg behind on weight. A perfect 2 point score also saw Philip take the individual honours too.

Lack of wind hampers trout fishing on Arrow

Juvenile anglers Keelan & Lochlann Ward with a nice Arrow trout

Calm and sunny conditions hamper lough fishing all around the country these days. This is not much different on Lough Arrow where generally a good wave is needed at this time of the year for good wet fly fishing. However, juvenile anglers, Keelan Ward aged ten and his brother Lochlann aged 5 from Lough Arrow Angling Club enjoyed a great day out when fishing with their father James last Sunday catching a nice 2.6 lbs. Arrow trout.

With some more unsettled weather forecast for the coming days, trout anglers around the lake are hopeful to yet enjoy some end of season wet fly fishing action.

Great day on Kiwi Girl for dappers and dry fly anglers

tuna on standup gear
Gavin Mannix fighting a bluefin tuna on Kiwi Girl

A mixed bunch of anglers fished on Kiwi Girl last weekend. Some met for the first time onboard the boat, others had been friends for over 60 years. But they all had one thing on their mind – tuna!

Setting out from Mullaghmore it wasn’t long before they saw the first bit of action, sea birds and dolphins converging on a tuna bust. The boat set course for an intercept, the gear was deployed and the game of trolling began.

Despite seeing an incredible abundance of wildlife, including minke whales, hundreds of dolphins, seals, a huge mix of sea birds and of course bluefin tuna, it was around 2pm before the first hook up. A fish had swiped at the left hand set of gear and missed. It was teased back to the squids and missed again! It immediately crossed to the lures on the right and BANG! it was on.

Gavin giving it welly!

The tuna took the rig on the stand up rod, so Gavin Mannix was strapped into the harness and connected directly to the biggest fish he had ever played in his life. It took about 30 minutes to bring the boat, after much coaching and cheering from everyone onboard. The fish was unhooked, recovered along side and tagged and measured for the TunaChart programme.

Gavin Mannix unhooks his prize

After few hours of trolling and wildlife spotting (and spotting wild tales!) another fish was hooked. This was a much bigger beast, so this one was played from the fighting chair. Eamon Giblin, a man for whom no trout ever proved a match, was soon hanging on for dear life. He fought with gusto and panache and never a bead of sweat speckled his brow. Again the contest lasted about 30 minutes and the fish was brought to the side of the boat.

Eamon Gilblin meets his match and Mattie Hughes, more used to the dapping rod, calls for reinforcements

Declan Kilgannon, skipper of the Kiwi Girl, did everything in his power to secure a third hook up but that was it for this trip. No one wanted anymore from the day as everyone had enjoyed a great adventure at sea. Eamon took to the long road to Scariff in County Clare with a satisfied grin and thoughts of making the most of this on the Sunday night! Gavin and his father Hugh, made the short trip back to Fermanagh equally pleased and making plans for the next trip out after bluefin tuna, maybe this time there’ll be third generation of Mannix’s onboard.

The tuna is given plenty of time to recover alongside so that it is released fighting fit!

Sunny and calm conditions make fishing tricky on Conn & Cullin

A flat calm Lough Conn during week

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

Due to the brilliant sunshine and almost calm weather not many anglers ventured out on the lakes and only a few trout were reported during a few small gaps in the weather.

Ian Craig and his daughter Rachel, from Sligo, had 14 small trout to the boat over 3 days, all released, all caught on small sedges and Bumbles. Rachel had her first trout also for just 1 lb. also released. They fished around the islands outside Bog Bay.

Ian Wise had two small trout after 4 hours fishing in Flannery’s Bay, and stressed the lake was quiet.

Daniel Mulhaire, Ballina, had a trout for 1.25 lbs. while trolling for salmon near Mossop’s Rock on the eastern shoreline of Lough Conn and released it.

In South Conn, Sean Lawlor and Michael Byrne from Mullingar fished for two days with only 4 keepers caught and released again. They were fishing small size 14 dry sedges and Bumbles.

Quiet week on the Moy

Low water on the Moy in Ballina

Kevin O’Boyle reports from the River Moy…

The River Moy saw a week of bright sunshine with temperatures from 19 to 25 degrees Celsius. Water levels were dropping consistently and water temperatures remained around 12 to 14 degrees Celsius…conditions far from ideal for salmon fishing.

Not many anglers ventured out, given the circumstances and, as a consequence, only 62 salmon were recorded for the week.

One of the few successful anglers: Darren Dolan with two salmon on his first day fishing in Ballina waters

Too quiet on Currane, but good news from Waterville Hatchery

Lough Currane 2 September 2021
Lough Currane 2 September 2021

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

24/8/21 Great news to report on the Waterville Hatchery because in the last few months there has been some great work done in upgrading of the hatchery, which will give the Salmon Fry more space and will give these Noble Salmon Fry a better chance of survival in warmer conditions, on that note I would like to on  behalf of all the Currane Anglers to congratulate our Chairmen Mr. Michael Roden and his team on the great work their doing in keeping the Waterville Fishery Flag flying. On a personal note, apologise to all the readers of the No Spin No Fly’s Just Facts Zone, due to circumstances beyond my control I couldn’t take any photos this evening because I wasn’t invited, but with any luck we may have some in tomorrow’s notes. I would like to finish on a photo video of the great fishing of the past and with any luck the future. As you can see, we Currane Anglers are trying to pull our act together, it’s about time the government and Europe wake up to the fact that Salmon and Sea Trout is going downhill fast as it is the same with tourist Game Anglers, so here is a perfect click  of the past.

Now today’s Fly, Spin, and troll, all quiet on all fronts. Wind East and veered SE light to calm with Bright sunshine all day.

25/8/21 The Currane Anglers had their Sombrero’s on this bright and calm sunny day on Lough Currane, their lines stayed dormant all day. Wind direction light plus you can say it did the ring of Lough Currane.

26/8/21 Sombrero’s take control of the Currane anglers as the sun blazes down on Lough Currane this day. So, one can say no suntan and no rod benders for the Currane anglers. Wind SE light variable light to calm.

27/8/21 The sombrero Anglers weren’t out this day but by all accounts, there was one Currane angler out manipulating his skills, sadly his post and telegraphs were all quiet on the SW front. Wind SW light mainly sunny with reasonable cloud at times for most of the day.

28/8/21 As of yet the Currane report is all quiet and for good reason, the Currane anglers and all of Kerry are mourning the defeat of their Kingdom to the mighty red hand of Tyrone by 3-14 to 0-22 in the semi-final of the All Ireland. All I can say watch this space you never know your luck, sadly Kerry had no luck today and one has to accept Tyrone had the upper hand and good luck to them in the Final against Mayo. Wind SE and veered SW light and very warm with reasonable cloud cover.

Ballinaskelligs Bay on 29 August 2021
Ballinaskelligs Bay on 29 August 2021

29/8/21 The sun was blazing down on the Waterville fishery this day, with the air temperature reaching 25 c. so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know today’s facts. Wind light and all over the place.

30/8/21 Just one lonesome Currane Angler trolling the waters on the North side of Grassy Island this morning, in a light ESE wind and veered WSW with good cloud cover.

31/8/21 Two boats out, one of the boats was out from [email protected] and by all accounts his manipulations were all quiet on the Western front. Wind light and variable and good cloud cover.

1/9/2021 Just one lonesome Currane angler manipulating the Currane waters this day and I can say all lines were quiet on all fronts, be it fishing lines, landlines, or mobile lines. To all game anglers it’s well worth looking at this link

Lough Currane 2 September 2021
Lough Currane 2 September 2021

2/9/2021 There were a few fly anglers on the world-famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie as of yet did not hear of any fish caught but watch this space. Now we head upstream to Lough Currane and just one boat out manipulating their skills and by all accounts their lines were all quiet on the SW front going by the mobile technology. Wind East light and variable with good cloud cover.

Find out more about Lough Currane…

The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. Munster Blackwater needs rain to bring on the fishing

Munster Blackwater upstream of Fermoy
Munster Blackwater upstream of Fermoy

No change from last week. Plenty of fish in the system although a lot are coloured as we are getting to that time of the year. It’s two weeks since that last real fall of rain. This brought on some movement of fish, especially above Fermoy but the fishing was nothing spectacular.

Stale fish, low water and bright days have seen fishing effort on the river dropping with the water levels.

With a bit of luck the rain forecast for the weekend will improve the fishing, but there does not seem like much chance of a flood.
