Miserable mist and suntans on Currane, but otherwise quiet

Sunset at Loher Caherdaniel on the Wild Atlantic Way Ring of Kerry
Sunset at Loher Caherdaniel on the Wild Atlantic Way Ring of Kerry

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

15/4/21 There was only one lonesome Barbless angler manipulating his barbless flies or lures, sadly his flies and lures stayed as lonesome as himself, need I say more. Wind SSE and cloudy at times.

16/4/21 The Currane anglers were all quiet on all fronts, just two boats out, what do you expect, miracles? Mind you I think we need one at this rate. Wind SSE light to fresh and overcast.

17/4/21 Again just two boats out and with all their efforts their lines stayed slack, but I will not give them any flack. Wind SSE fresh and overcast with light rain in the afternoon.

18/4/21 All quiet on all fronts, there were four boats out manipulating this Day, their order of merit is as follows, 3 hand me down Brown tag boats, 1 Barbless Angler. Wind SSE light to fresh and overcast with light misty rain at times.

19/4/21 Four boats out on this miserable day with light misty rain at times, come evening the Currane anglers were just as miserable as the weather as they looked down on their floorboards and thinking to themselves a few scales wouldn’t do any harm. Wind SSE light to fresh and overcast all day.

20/4/21 Again the Currane anglers were feeling subdued today for the lack of action on their lures. To be fair to the Currane anglers Lough Currane is exceptionally low. Just for the record there were 3 boats out. Wind SSE light and overcast all day.

21/4/21 In the words of one Currane Angler, and I quote, all I caught was a suntan today, thankfully you don’t need a Brown tag to catch the sun. That sums up today’s angling notes. Wind SSE light to fresh and variable.

Find out more about Lough Currane…

The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. For more details see

31/3/21 Just two Brown hand me down tag boats out on this calm and foggy day. Wind was light to calm and variable. Now to all you pessimistic anglers who were complaining that in the 2020 Season there were no Salmon in the Lake? We will put the record straight, to the best of my knowledge there were 160 Salmon caught and a good few more not reported.  Now let us head for the 2020 Hatchery Brood, just for the record the Salmon Brood was got with one swipe and I can tell you when the Currane system was fishing a lot better there was many occasions it was a dam site more difficult and took a lot more than one swipe. Now we head down stream into Lough Currane for 2021 Kelt Season just for the record there were 260 Kelts caught up to 22nd of March and counting and on average four boats fishing.

Cold, blustery day on the Nore but trout didn’t mind

trout

Dan O’Neill reports from the Nore…

A fairly cool weekend with medium to strong blustery wind made fishing on Saturday a little difficult to say the least. I think if Saturday had been 2 months further into our current season I possibly would of been at the vice instead. But being full of fishing spirit this early in the season the weather wasn’t going to stop me.

trout

Very unsure where I was going to fish today. I was trying to find as much shelter as possible from the wind, finding a stretch along pebble beach I gave it a go. I started at 12 o’Clock and had plenty of trout on wets and dry dropper. the trout were further back in the runs and along a lot of the ledges also. I found the trout to be in pods. I would hit 5 or 6 then move along a little and hit a few more.

Fishing was challenging but each trout made it worth it. The nymph that worked the best under my Klink was the olive thread nymph with flash under the tail.

Trout were mostly under the average size for here which is about 20cm. In saying that I had 6 or 7 between 25 – 30 cm; the bigger trout gave a great account of themselves showing the usual acrobatics.

Wet flies worked well for a short while. There was quite a good hatch of olives just after mid day.

The river is still a little cold. It fished best from 12 – 2.15 and it had gotten quite slow by my finish time of around 4pm.

Looking forward to some warmer weather hopefully soon ,

Some sea trout from Owenmore even in low water

Owenmore upper lakes

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

16th Aprill 2021: We have had a run of seatrout in the last flood with the odd one trickling up river in the low water. A local man decided to chance the White Lake and against all the odds had two trout one almost 2 lbs. A man from Tralee fished the day before had numerous brownies and one seatrout about a lb.

Great Spring Salmon Fishing on Carrowmore Lake!

Spring Salmon fishing at its best - Catch, Photo, Release!

Spring salmon fishing on Carrowmore Lake kicked off with a bumper start! After the first fish of the new season was caught by Mervin Corway on April 12th more Mayo anglers were lucky enough to enjoy great action on the Lough.

Releasing a salmon on Carrowmore

Conditions remained excellent throughout the week with all the usual hotspots producing salmon between 6 and 12 lbs. Amongst the successful anglers were John Cosgrove, Eamon Kennedy, Christy Murphy, Rocky Moran and Christin Breuker to name but a few.

Most successful flies included the usual suspects such as Jaffa, Green Peter, Dabblers and various Bumble patterns. The outlook is for more settled weather with light to moderate winds which should lead to more great catches on one of the country’s prime spring salmon fisheries.

Please note that Carrowmore Lake is a Brown Tag Fishery! For fishing on Carrowmore Lake contact Seamus Henry on +353 (0)97 83487 or visit www.bangorerrisangling.com.

Two salmon caught but the Boyne is in need of water.

The River Boyne

Water levels in the Boyne have dropped to the point where rain is needed to encourage fish to run. Fish are scarce at this time of the year and to date only two fish have been reported. One of the fish was reported to be circa 10lb.

We are now approaching the time of year when a few of the bigger fish of the year are generally caught so a rise in water levels would be more than welcome.

The recent relaxing of restrictions has seen a small increase in the number of anglers fishing. The next rise in water levels will see more anglers out trying for that big springer.

Areas worth a try are the lower Blackwater in Navan. In addition, the Blackcastle Fishery, Sophies Island and the Bend are all worth a look. We will keep you posted as the season progresses.

Irish Angling Update 16 April 2021

Weather-wise this past week started like a typical April week with a mixture of snow, sleet and some sunny intervals and even a touch of ground frost in places. However, during the week Spring was definitely in the air with all parts of the country enjoying fantastic sunshine and temperatures reaching the high teens.

The great news for anglers is that the Government has lifted the 5km travel restrictions and that travel within county bounds or up to 20km is now possible again. Details of what this means for anglers are available here.

It was incredibly quiet on the coarse and pike fishing fronts this past week but we received a number of exciting trout and salmon reports instead.

Starting in the far northwest of the country, Carrowmore Lake produced its first salmon of the season a fine 9 lbs. fish caught by local angler Mervin Corway. Read the full story here!

Staying in the northwest, salmon catches on the River Moy also increased with dropping water levels. Foxford Salmon Anglers reported the first salmon of the season on their waters, while East Mayo Anglers reported three salmon for the week.

On the Blackwater water levels and river conditions remained excellent for salmon fishing which resulted in a number of fish being caught. Chris Coady was among the lucky anglers and had a cracking fish on the fly off the Glenmore Beat which was estimated at 10lbs+ and safely released.

Some salmon were also reported form the Killarney Lakes and the River Laune where low water levels resulted in moderate fishing conditions on the rivers, while conditions on the Lakes remain excellent. Meanwhile, on Lough Currane, the low water levels didn’t help and sea trout are still scarce with only one fish caught during the week.

Trout anglers in the southwest will be pleased to hear that IFI’s stocked lakes are to reopen as Covid restrictions ease. IFI is implementing a phased reopening of its fisheries subject to safe operation being possible and appropriate resourcing. Details and reopening schedule are available here.

Over to the northwest again where anglers on Lough Conn enjoyed some good trout action during the week.  Now that the duck fly hatches have almost finished, more and more sedges are starting to appear which should result in more surface activity in the coming days.

A calm and sunny Lough Conn

Moving from lake to river, we have a great report from Dan O’Neill who wasn’t disappointed having returned to the Nore after more than a month.

Staying with river trout fishing, we received a great report from Co. Longford. Brothers Daniel and Simon Daly caught six beautiful wild brown trout while fishing a local river which is our “Catch of the Week”. Their fish were beautiful bars of gold and ranged between 9lb 4oz and 3lb 2oz and were all carefully released.

There’s little enough to report from the sea anglers, but Cork Harbour bass guide Richie Ryan was out again doing a bit of saltwater fly fishing for mullet. After having success the previous week he crowned his efforts with a cracking “Irish Bonefish” which was estimated at 6 lbs.

Richie’s fly-caught “Irish Bonefish”

Expert knowledge from sea anglers is required for a survey programme launched by Inland Fisheries Ireland. By partaking in the survey anglers will contribute towards understanding changes in angling species over time. For anyone interested in taking part in the survey please follow link here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Fishing_Then_and_Now. Results will be available in time on our website. Each unique respondent will be entered into a prize draw to win a €200 voucher for their local angling tackle shop and a further two €100 vouchers are also in the draw.

In other news…

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) in collaboration with Leave No Trace Ireland has launched an outdoor recreational guide for angling based on the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace. The guide is available here: LNT IFI Angling Guide and on the Leave No Trace Ireland website here.

Go Fishing Week 2021 is approaching fast and we received another great video as part of our ‘Why I love to fish’ video competition. Check out Jess McBride’s excellent video here!

And now the weather…

Saturday will be dry in most areas with some hazy sunshine, best over the eastern half of the country. Cloudier and windier further west with some heavy rain in places along the west coast. In the evening, rain will extend over west Ulster, Connacht and west Munster. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with moderate southerly winds, fresher along the west coast. On Sunday outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue through the day. While the start of next week will be still wet in places current indications suggest that high pressure will dominate our weather for the rest of the week.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Markus Müller
