Bluefin tuna tagged off Cork, Clare, Sligo and Donegal

Bluefin Tuna
Bluefin Tuna

Authorised fishing charter boats taking part in the TunaChart catch-tag-release fishery have had bluefin tuna all along Ireland’s Atlantic coast. Boats in Cork, Clare, Sligo and Donegal all reported success in the last week.

Sligo tunaCongratulations go especially to those boats who got their first fish of the the season. Sarah Marie in Sligo got their season off to a great start earlier this week with 3 bluefins to around 540lb.

Tony Tate’s Tigger in Cork endured some hardship this week when the center rigger was absolutely smashed to pieces by a giant bluefin. The tuna remained hooked and gave the team one hell of a fight. Eventually they had him at the back to the boat only for the hook came flying from his mouth 6 feet from putting the lip gaff in him. This was just one of  3 bluefins lost over 4 days. They finally hooked, fought, tagged and released a 600lb giant yesterday.

Other boats that tagged fish in the last week include the Rebecca C in Ballycotton, Clare Dragoon in Carrigaholt, Kiwi Girl in Mullaghmore and Deep Blue in Killybegs.

Finally good luck to John Fleming’s Brazen Hussy II, who is now ready to take blue fin bookings as part of the TunaChart programme

West Cork round up, Ilen fishing well

Another view of the Ilen
Another view of the Ilen

Some good catches have been enjoyed across west Cork in the week ending 13 September.

The Ilen River is fishing well with 30 salmon reported. The best was a 10lb fish by one of the  club anglers on flying C.

On the Comholla anglers reported 10 Salmon, Ouvane had 12 Salmon and the Mealagh 8 Salmon.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Arrow still worth a cast

With only a handful of anglers still venturing out on Arrow catch numbers have dropped considerably. However, local angler Roger Maxwell proved that it is still worth putting in the effort catching some nice trout.

This should encourage more anglers to have a day out on Lough Arrow before the season closes on September 30th.

Quiet on the Bandon, rain should improve fishing

Week-Ending Sunday 13th September 2020

Last week was quiet again on the Bandon with little angling effort as the water levels dropped off. There were only a couple of fish reported and these were coloured. Hopefully we get some rain in the next week which should freshen the river up for the final few days of the season.

Week-Ending Sunday 6th September 2020

Last week was another slow week with fish very reluctant to take despite good numbers of fish in the river.  Anglers are reminded that the use of prawn and shrimp are now prohibited since Sept 1st. The river is too coloured on the lower reaches for fishing due to the instream works being carried out in the town. The river is holding at a good height for angling at the moment and more rain is due in the coming days.

Go Fishing…

Bandon Angling Association have set up a guiding service in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Day tickets and club membership are also available.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Shark fishing off the south east producing plenty of thrills

Blue shark

Kit Dunne reports on a sharking trip out over the Celtic Deeps…

13 September: Congratulations to Shane Devine on his fine Specimen Blue Shark, 107lb calculated weight. After an epic battle, his Father Conor assisted with boating the fish, measured photographed and returned fit and well.

All in all a day of quality not quantity with one Porgie to the side as well. Dolphins, Guillemots and Fulmars kept us amused on a slow drift.

Porbeagle shark
Porbeagle shark off the south east coast

Reports of many tuna in the area had us excited but we had NO sightings. For a long day it went too quick, great company with these guys and an old angling bud John Mcloughlin.

East coast round up

SHARK fishing out of Kilmore Quay has been sporadic this year, with more days cancelled than fished its been hard to get a run at it. We’ve had from 10 Sharks a day to zero, however, the quality has been very good with a few Blues well over 100lb and many in the 90’s. Porbeagles are generally in the 60-80lb bracket, small yet aggressive fighting fish. Kian Ryan got his first blue Wednesday at 85lb calculated weight, Paddy Keogh got another, or possibly the same one an hour later.

The bottom fishing has produced Haddock, Gurnard Whiting, Ray, Spurdog and a lone Hake.

WRECK fishing out of Wicklow has been very productive, we set out to investigate these areas and found them to be well worth the 20Nm steam. The highlight was a 12lb Pollock for Jerry Dixon, our first Irish Specimen Pollock. Many Pollock were taken between 8 and 10lb, a few Cod between 4 and 8lb and a few small Coaly.

Next on the agenda is to target the Porbeagles on these wrecks.

TOPE fishing is very good at the moment with a few pack and young tope still about, the big females are inshore also. A fine Specimen of 161cm long was taken by Nathan Condell in an evening session on Thursday just 20 mins from the Harbour.

SMOOTH-HOUNDS are still about IF YOU CAN GET CRAB. The Marks South of Wicklow Head produced numerous Hounds with a 104cm specimen 2 weeks ago for Lee Greene. The same areas have recently produced small tope and about 30 good BullHuss on one trip.

Shark fishing will continue for another 3 weeks weather-permitting, Wreck fishing will continue throughout Autumn / Winter. Tope should keep producing some big ones into October when we then target Spurdog for the Winter Season.

Great fishing on Killala Bay in flat calm conditions

Charter skipper Donal Kennedy reports from Killala Bay…

A party of anglers from Co. Mayo and Co. Sligo set out from Killala Harbour on 15th Sept to enjoy what turned out to be a cracking day’s fishing. The weather was good, slightly overcast with calm seas, nearly flat calm.

The first drift over rocky ground produced some pouting and pollack. Then we were basically “attacked” by spurdogs, a big shoal which cut some of our lines and it was obvious that they frightened away most of the other species. We moved to another rocky area hoping that the spurdogs would not follow and this was actually the case. After many drifts over this area, some fine pollack into double figures were caught with many being released back alive to the water. The fishing was good with catches of cod, red gurnard, pouting, coalfish, cuckoo wrasse, and lesser-spotted dogfish being along with plenty of mackerel. All returned safely to Killala well pleased with their day.

Currane produces sea trout in south westerlies but shift to east slows it down again

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

10/9/20 I stand corrected and guilty as charged for failing miserably in my duties for not checking my texts properly yesterday, so my apologies, so let us put the record straight. Well for starters, the Currane fly anglers caught a few nice Sea Trout on the drift. In the Salmon department there was a fine Salmon caught on the troll. On today’s notes all quiet on the Western front in all departments? Do not be surprised if I update today’s notes in tomorrow’s notes and I will be disappointed if I do not have to update. Wind West light with good cloud cover, humidity 69 %.

11/9/20 The Currane fly anglers were in reasonably good form in the Trout Department this day, with a nice mixture of Sea Trout and Brown Trout caught on the drift. Wind West Southwest, humidity 88%. Yesterday’ weather, maximum air temperature 15.5 centigrade

12/9/20 Again the Currane fly drifters were in good form in the Sea Trout and Brown Trout department. On the World-famous Butler pool there were 3 Anglers manipulating their Salmon flies, but as of yet my mobile is slack, so I take it the anglers in question had slacklines? Wind Southwest light with good cloud cover, humidity 83%. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 15.5 centigrade.

13/9/20 The Currane Drifters were in a quandary this wild day and for good reason, there was a strong Southwest wind blowing, as you can imagine it makes it more difficult to manipulate your flies, especially when your boat drifts towards those submerged rocks as you get that crunchy feeling, I will leave the rest to your imagination. In the Salmon department all quiet on the Southwest front. On the World-Famous Butler Pool there were two fly anglers’ manipulating their flies, no reports as of yet. Wind as already stated, reasonable cloud cover and humidity at 82%. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 17.3 centigrade.

14/9/20 Currane Anglers were all quiet in all departments, but do not be surprised if there is a backdate in tomorrow’s notes? Wind Southeast light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover, humidity 65%. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 17.3 centigrade.

15/9/20 The Currane fly drifters were all quiet and the same goes for the trollers. Wind Southeast light to fresh followed by light misty rain, humidity 91%. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 22.1 centigrade.

16/9/20 The Currane drifters had a hard day of it and for good reason, there was little wind to talk off, plus it was very humid at 91% followed by bright sunshine at times. So, one can say without any fear of contradiction, the Currane fly anglers are completely exonerated this day, need I say more! Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 20.1 centigrade.

Find out more about Lough Currane…

The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. For more details see

Good sea trout fishing on Kylemore last week

Janet McDonnell from Kylemore House Fishery was in touch with a report of a very large trout caught by Eric Logan last week. The report was compiled by Dave Richards, one of the DADS involved.

Rainbow over lake
Gold at the end of the rainbow
DADS on Tour

On Tuesday 10th of September six anglers from the Dublin Amateur Dapping Society (DADS) set out from the jetty at Kylemore House. Armed with expert advice from their gracious host Janet, three boats set off in different directions to start their drifts.
The day was overcast with wind gusts of 28 kmh from the south west making casting extremely difficult .

On their first drift across the lake, Eric Logan and Dave Richards  brought up a salmon but failed to connect. Throughout the morning the group continued to connect with trout, with Paul Murphy landing a fine 1lb 8oz  sea trout .

Monster Trout

As the weather calmed slightly in the afternoon, Eric Logan, casting a team of wet flies, struck into a  fish which at first seemed small.  Eric was taken by surprise when the fish quickly stripped 30 metres of fly line right down to the backing. This was no ordinary fish and several times it made an attempt to run under the boat to evade capture. On the third occasion, following a 15 minute tussle the fish finally showed on the surface and was quickly landed. The trout was  put on an electronic scales and its weight was recorded by the boating partner as 8lb 4oz! It was a mature cock trout and appears to be the largest trout that has been caught on the lake this century. The trout was given time to recover and was released back into the lake.

Later in the afternoon the weather closed in again and conditions became more difficult. The final  drift produced  further freshly run sea trout which were returned into the system. While the weather disappointed the lake certainly did not.  As a group we were enthralled by our first experience of this lake and its dramatic setting. We are already making plans  to return next season.

Without scale analysis it is impossible to tell whether the fish was a ferox trout, or a sea trout that had been in the system a long time, but whatever it was, it was the fish of a lifetime for Eric. Dave reports that his smile was still there 5 days later
