South Shore Anglers finish the year on a high

South Shore Sea Angling Club held their last competition of the year at the weekend. Paul Mason reports…

20/12/18: Storm Deirdre came and Storm Deirdre went. She did her best to dampen South Shore’s spirits and blow us out. We were blessed to get a window between gales to fish our last competition of the year.

Dodds Rock, Courtown

We had originally planned to fish our usual final match on Arklow beach but some inconsiderate pot fisherman whose pots had washed up close to the shore some weeks ago never bothered to collect them. We rescheduled the competition for Roney Point, a safe bet or so we thought. The lads who got down early discovered the entrance to the beach had an eight foot drop caused by Deirdre’s windy passing and was dangerous. So quick thinking by Thomas Keogh had us travelling to Dodds Rock north of Courtown for an alternative venue.

It looked very fishy with a chocolate coloured sea from the storm the previous day. Fish were coming in from the off with the in-tune anglers hitting Whiting in doubles and trebles and some very lucky lads getting 4 on a three hook trace …eh! Niall. Niall Carabini seemed to be a whiting whisperer on the day charming 29 of the little shiny piranhas for the winning bag.

The final placing for the Master Angler had to be battled out and it was looking good for the big blonde bomber John Birmingham with some baldy auld lad hot on his heels and Thomas (Hasselhoff) Keogh in with a shout. In the end it was inevitable result although it was tight with one point between the blonde bomber and the baldy auld lad. Well done Blondie I’ll get you next year if I’m able…..

Dogfish
A dogfish can make a big difference to a match score

Silver boy Evan Ryan was junior Master Angler with consistent performances throughout the year equalling and bettering most of the senior anglers, we may lookout when he turns senior. Hugh boy Darren, silver boy’s Daddy was convinced he had won his zone on Sunday but he never legislated for the Doggy magnet Keogh who had a Dog in his bag but had three fish less than Darren with no undersized. Hot on the heels of silver boy was young Sam Findley, he is making great inroads this year and becoming a confident good angler. Sam was presented with a Anyfish Anywhere rod for his continuous improvement in the club. Well done Sam keep up the good work and dedication.

South Shore SAC is growing where other clubs are declining so we must be doing something right, the 70 Euro affiliation fee is returned to every angler at the end of the year in the form of a voucher and a Christmas dinner. We put everything into the anglers and try and spread the prize money at competitions around. We get mid twenty numbers of anglers at every competition and the quality is very high with many internationals and Master Angler winners competing. We have over fifty anglers affiliated to the South Shore and still growing. We are open for members for the new season and it is expected to be great with exciting plans, remember we have five Master Angler places so qualifying is very possible.

New Guiding Service and Boat Hire and Great Fishing Too!

Pauric McGearty was in contact with us today to let us now about his new guiding and boat hire business on Carafin Lough and Lough Oughter in Co Cavan. Pauric is located on the shore of Carafin Lake and took some time out recently to fish with Gerard Smith. It took the lads a bit of time to realise that the dead baits were not working so they changed over to lures and managed to boat 18 good pike to 20.5lbs. The fish were all in great condition and gave a really good account of themselves, very strong hard fighting fish according to Pauric.

Good Sized Pike Make Late Rush on Derravaragh

Angling guide Alan Broderick was in contact to let us know that he has had some great pike fishing into late November much to the delight of all his clients. After the long dry summer, the water remained clear but the fishing really picked up as water temperatures dropped. Lures fished low and slow produced all of the fish, the best of which measured 116, 115, 112 and 110 cm respectively. Alan estimated that the best fish weighed close to 30lb. Takes were very tentative according to Alan and it was sometimes difficult to realise if you had a bite as the pike were driving the lure forward making the line go slack. Once it was realised that this was the indicator many more pike were hooked and landed. If you are interested in fishing Lough Derravaragh Alan’s contact details can be found below. Alan also has boats available for hire.

Getting hooked on angling on Lough Derg

Once in a while we get a story sent us about a turning point in an angler’s career or a special moment that marked when they got hooked on angling. A tale like this is worth sharing around and makes for a great Catch of the Week winner. Alan Frahill from Limerick takes up the story…

perch
Patrick with a lovely Lough Derg Perch

While fishing on Lough Derg one afternoon recently with my son Patrick (9), we came across a couple of nice Perch. The smile on this young man’s face tells its own story but his comments later that evening really capture the essence of fishing and I’m sure that all anglers can associate with the moment that they became “hooked” on this wonderful sport.

We had 5 lovely perch and needless to say all 5 fish were returned safely.

Patrick was elated with his catch and afterwards he likened catching fish to scoring a try in rugby or a goal in soccer. He went so far as to say, “Catching fish is a great feeling, its’ brilliant. I’m so happy with today”.

Thanks for sending on the story Alan and well done Patrick – I can’t think of a better Catch of the Week to end the year on!

River Shannon at Carrick fishes well for Sheemore anglers

The Sheemore Anglers held their member’s Hamper Match at the Carrick Craft marina in on Sunday 16th December. The match was the 5th leg of the Winter League and their was also a pairs competition to play for.

The river was a coloured and flowing well following the rain earlier in the weekend, so it was looking like a tough day ahead.  Some of the anglers on ledger switched to pole due to snaggy conditions and many found the slacker pegs fished best. In the end there were some decent weights recorded and results are as follows:

Individuals

  1. A. Riley, 17lb 10oz
  2. J. Van de Spek, 17lb, 4oz
  3. M. Tigwell, 13lb 10oz

On a tough day every fish gets a smile!

17 December: All the omens were good when we assembled for this year’s Fur and Feather match. Reports of good weights caught throughout the week and fish topping all along the section were bandiesd about. Alas it was not the be. After the first hour it was apparent that it was going to be a grueller that only O’Briensbridge can produce.

Most bags of fish were measured in ounces and only 3 broke the 1 pound mark. top weight was caught by Paul -1lb 4oz.

The Association has over 500 members, and a waiting list for new members.

The trout season will reopen on March 1st 2019, and day tickets are available in local shop in Collinstown and from the Chairman.

The L.L.A.A. A.G.M. will take place early in the New Year and we will have more details, on this come 2019.

Good piking on the River Inny, fish to 26lb 2oz caught

Mick Flanagan reports from the Midlands where winter piking on the Inny saw some fine fish caught…

Nice Inny Pike for Mick
Nice Inny Pike for Mick

Last week Gordon Davies was back in the midlands, and the International Sailing Judge from Bray is really taking a shine to our Midland Lakes & Rivers. This time around we lashed down the River Inny and checked out water levels, and to see was the summer weed growth dying back a bit. The night before we fished, there was heavy rain and the River was in flood, but crystal clear. Mind you it will take a lot more water before you really get to fish all stretches on the Inny.

It was Gordon’s first trip on the Inny, and he will never forget this day as we had some super pike, including a River Specimen of 26lbs 2oz caught by Gordon. The River Monster measured an incredible 110cm in length, and had a Girth of 22cm. I handled some big pike in my time, but this fish was up their with the top predator’s in our waterways. The pike was in mint condition, and latched onto a Savage Eel lure trolling in only 3-4 ft of water. Gordon had a fantastic battle with his River Monster before we got a few quick photographs and released this female pike back to the Inny.

Dogs, dabs and whiting from Fenit for Kerry inventor

Alan O’Shea, the Kerry inventor of Rodfendr, reports on his trip to Fenit at the weekend…

16 December: It was a typical December evening on the South West coast of Ireland. Dark – even though there was a bright half moon clearly visible in the chill 4 degree night. Windy with the strong possibility of rain. I headed to my favourite fishing spot, Fenit Pier just outside Tralee and luckily for me about 10 minutes from my front door. I am armed with my beachcaster which I will rest against the Pier or rocks using my Rodfendr to protect the line and blank, I have mackerel and frozen black lug as bait, my rig which I made myself is a modified double flapper with glow lights attached as attractors.

rodfendr
Rodfendr doing its job – protecting line and rod

I arrive just after low tide and I plan on fishing until either the weather or the bait run out. It’s windy and cold as I set up and I can see that the water is coloured. I head towards the end of the pier near the Marina and cast out towards the Atlantic. I have had some decent dab from this spot and who knows what else might be swimming around.

Dab
Dab are often caught from this mark

It wasn’t long before the first telltale signs appeared; the rod tip was dancing in the dark. It was going to be a whiting session. There was quite a school of them in small whiting taking the bait greedily catch and release was the order of the night. But every now and then there was a much stronger tug on the rod it seemed to me that there might be a young conger about. The wind got stronger and the tide rushed but the rod held steady with Rodfendr holding and protecting it on the concrete pier.

whiting
Greedy Whiting weren’t long fishing the baits

Eventually the whiting gave way and I increased the bait size. An old favourite of mine and a constant resident of fishing from Fenit arrived – the lesser spotted dogfish. They were hungry and made short work of my dwindling bait supply.

dogfish
Dogfish soon followed and made short work of what was left over

This was a nice evening fishing at a beautiful place. I didn’t break any records and the action was simple and predictable after the first few whiting came up but I enjoyed it. I had a great time at a local amenity which didn’t cost much except for a little bait.

For me fishing is not always about catching but more about being out in nature, well protected of course, and relaxing allowing my head to clear of all the daily clutter.
