Dogs, dabs and whiting from Fenit for Kerry inventor

Alan O’Shea, the Kerry inventor of Rodfendr, reports on his trip to Fenit at the weekend…

16 December: It was a typical December evening on the South West coast of Ireland. Dark – even though there was a bright half moon clearly visible in the chill 4 degree night. Windy with the strong possibility of rain. I headed to my favourite fishing spot, Fenit Pier just outside Tralee and luckily for me about 10 minutes from my front door. I am armed with my beachcaster which I will rest against the Pier or rocks using my Rodfendr to protect the line and blank, I have mackerel and frozen black lug as bait, my rig which I made myself is a modified double flapper with glow lights attached as attractors.

I arrive just after low tide and I plan on fishing until either the weather or the bait run out. It’s windy and cold as I set up and I can see that the water is coloured. I head towards the end of the pier near the Marina and cast out towards the Atlantic. I have had some decent dab from this spot and who knows what else might be swimming around.

Dab
Dab are often caught from this mark

It wasn’t long before the first telltale signs appeared; the rod tip was dancing in the dark. It was going to be a whiting session. There was quite a school of them in small whiting taking the bait greedily catch and release was the order of the night. But every now and then there was a much stronger tug on the rod it seemed to me that there might be a young conger about. The wind got stronger and the tide rushed but the rod held steady with Rodfendr holding and protecting it on the concrete pier.

whiting
Greedy Whiting weren’t long fishing the baits

Eventually the whiting gave way and I increased the bait size. An old favourite of mine and a constant resident of fishing from Fenit arrived – the lesser spotted dogfish. They were hungry and made short work of my dwindling bait supply.

Dogfish soon followed and made short work of what was left over

This was a nice evening fishing at a beautiful place. I didn’t break any records and the action was simple and predictable after the first few whiting came up but I enjoyed it. I had a great time at a local amenity which didn’t cost much except for a little bait.

For me fishing is not always about catching but more about being out in nature, well protected of course, and relaxing allowing my head to clear of all the daily clutter.

Rathcon rainbow – all through winter these trout continue to take a fly and are plenty of fun to catch

16 December: The 2nd qualifier was held today. 18 anglers fished the 4 hour event. A total of 44 fish were landed. The unsettled weather over the weekend didn’t help and the anglers did well to tempt a few trout.

The results were:

  • 1st Paul Kay – 8 fish
  • 2nd Darius Simcus – 5 fish and the biggest at 63cm
  • 3rd Alan Lawless – 5 fish
  • 4th Hubert Smith – 4 fish
  • 5th Vaidus Tiskus – 4 fish

Many thanks to Aidan, Martin and Ger for helping out and to Southside Angling for sponsoring a prize.

Go fishing…

Rathcon Lake is 8.5 acres and is stocked with top quality rainbow trout. The lake is fly fishing only and designed to allow maximum fishing so that 90% of the water can be covered. The average depth is 10ft with deep holes of up to 20ft in places. The fishery is open all year round and is home to a wide range of fly life, in particular buzzers, sedges, hawthorn and daddylonglegs, all providing excellent dry fly fishing, especially in the summer evenings.

Public Consultation opens on new Bye-law for sea trout and brown trout on River Bandon

Public Consultation opens on new Bye-law for sea trout and brown trout on River Bandon

Inland Fisheries Ireland is hosting a public consultation around a proposed Bye-law which focuses on the conservation of sea trout and brown trout on the River Bandon. Submissions from interested parties are now invited during the consultation period in respect of the Bye-law.

The new Bye-law aims to help conserve the numbers of brown trout of all sizes taken from upstream areas of the river and its tributaries as well as the numbers of young sea trout taken in the lower river and upper estuary. There is currently no minimum length size specified when catching and retaining a sea trout or brown trout on the river. In addition, there is no ‘bag limit’ on the number of brown trout an angler can retain.

The new bye law would:

  • Set a minimum length of 25 centimetres for any sea trout or any brown trout caught and retained on the waters of the River Bandon and its tributaries.
  • Set a bag limit of not more than three brown trout per day on the waters of the River Bandon and its tributaries.
  • Require anglers to fish catch & release methods, ban the use of worms and allow only single, barbless hooks in angling for brown trout once the three per day bag limit had been reached.

Interested parties should make a submission to the consultation in writing. Submissions should be marked ‘Public consultation – River Bandon (Conservation of Trout)’ and be submitted by post to: Inland Fisheries Ireland, Sunnside House, Macroom, Co. Cork, P12 X602 or by email to bandonriverbyelaw@fisheriesireland.ie .

The Public Consultation period will run for 14 days and the deadline for receipt of submissions is 5pm on Monday, 31st of December 2018. All submissions received by Inland Fisheries Ireland will be published on its website www.fisheriesireland.ie.

Funding available in 2019 for angling projects and events

Funding available in 2019 for angling projects and events

Initiatives which support novice anglers and angling tourism invited to apply for funding to Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Sponsorship Programme 2019

Inland Fisheries Ireland has launched its Sponsorship Programme for 2019 and is now inviting applications from suitable angling events and initiatives nationwide. The programme, which is one of the funding mechanisms of the National Strategy for Angling Development, awarded funding to 62 Irish angling events and 10 teams representing Ireland in overseas international events to the combined value of €30,000 last year.

The Sponsorship Programme supported 17 initiatives by local angling clubs during the year which included junior competitions, summer leagues, disability outreach programmes and angling coaching workshops. In total, 630 juvenile and novice anglers participated in these initiatives and almost 300 of them joined a fishing club for the first time following their participation in a local engagement project.

In addition to junior and novice angling projects, there were 28 large scale angling events supported via the programme in 2018 with 1,866 experienced anglers taking part. Over 800 anglers travelled from outside Ireland to participate in these angling competitions.

The events and initiatives which are eligible for funding in 2019 are as follows:

  • Large international competitions held in Ireland which showcase Ireland’s angling and contribute to local economies, supporting jobs and businesses.
  • Novice angler events & training courses which increase participation in angling including funding of transport hire for participants to facilitate attendance at novice angler events.
  • Information dissemination / initiatives to promote fisheries awareness / conservation and protection of the inland fisheries and sea angling resource / promotion of angling as a key Irish tourism activity e.g. Production of high quality angling promotional videos / seminars / coaching / training / workshops etc.
  • Juvenile and minority angling teams representing Ireland at international events both home and abroad.

Applications for funding from the Sponsorship Scheme are now invited from angling clubs, associations or any local group organising an angling initiative. The scheme will remain open for funding applications until the 18th of January 2019 with applications for equipment, staff support and biosecurity assistance available throughout the year.

To find out more and to apply, visit www.fisheriesireland.ie/sponsorship .  Awards will be subject to budget availability and adherence to the scheme requirements.

Peter O’Reilly – an appreciation

Paul Bourke returns to the blog to pen an appreciation of Peter O’Reilly who passed away at the end of last week…

On the 6th of December, a great angling legend, Peter O’Reilly passed away quietly in a Dublin hospital after a long illness.  I first met Peter when he joined the Inland Fisheries Trust as a Game Angling Officer in 1978.  I had certainly heard of him, particularly when I fished and worked at times on Lough Sheelin in my early years.  His first job at that time was to find out and collect information on all the great Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout waters all around Ireland.

At that time, the Trust had many field officers working on the best trout angling waters and it was from them that he gathered the complete information on the fisheries concerned.  On Salmon, Sea trout and other trout waters he visited ever angling clubs and fishery owner to collect information on all those rivers and lakes over a number of years.  After years of collecting the information he published the first of his four great books in 1987 when he then worked for the Central Fisheries Board. Entitled Trout and Salmon Loughs of Ireland, it was an instant best seller topping the bestselling book charts in nonfiction in Ireland for several weeks.

In the following years he penned the companion book “Rivers of Ireland, A Flyfisher’s Guide”.  Two more books followed “Trout and Salmon Flies of Ireland” and finally “Fly fishing in Ireland”.  His writing in all his books was superb in detail and full of good practical advice.

During these years he became a professional fly casting instructor doing a series of exams both in the UK and the USA.  He then proceeded to hold popular fly casting courses in several game locations all around Ireland annually and I was delighted to take part in several of these.

He was a prolific writer in the media especially for the bestselling magazine Trout and Salmon in the UK and began in 1990 to publish monthly angling reports for the best of our Salmon and Trout fisheries until his retirement.

I joined the angling section in 1989 and worked with him at different times during the following years.   As the Editor of the Irish Angling Update, I was to work closely with Peter on the game angling reports he wrote for Trout and Salmon magazine.  He gave me great advice on these matters and on my casting when I had several occasions to fish with the great man who was wonderful to fish with and to tie flies with.

In later years he worked at many angling fairs promoting and marketing game angling here in Ireland and abroad in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland.

My deepest condolences to his wife Rose, his son Patrick and all his family.  He was a gentleman, friend and a colleague and I will miss him greatly as will many game anglers here in Ireland.  One of the true greats in Irish Angling and he left us a great legacy. Rest in peace Peter.

A good flounder

12 December: Good to see some fine sessions on the beach this week before the weekends open competition. Plenty of good flounder to late 30s along with counting size coleys, pollack, sea trout plus dogfish. A sign of the warm and windy winter so far was a session after cod for Johnny but every time the lug baits hit the bottom the Ballan wrasse were taking the hooks even this late on in the season with no proper frosts yet. Some fine whiting and a few codling on a change of venue keeping things interesting

Irish Angling Update – 14 December 2018

“Is this No. 247 or 246” “I don’t know, I lost count”

A wet and windy weekend was followed by a wet and windy week with still more wet and windy weather to come. It hasn’t been easy for anglers but we have a few reports from around the country as a number of clubs fished their last competitions of the year over the weekend…

This week started on a sombre note as we learned of the death of our retired colleague Peter O’Reilly. Peter had a lifetime of service in inland fisheries where he worked tirelessly to promote the wonderful salmon and trout fishing available across Ireland. Paul Bourke returns to the blog this week to pen an appreciation of one of Ireland’s true angling greats – Peter O’Reilly – an appreciation

The mixed up weather has not made for straightforward pike fishing. Cold, crisp days have been rare enough and floods have been the norm. High water often puts pike off the feed as they take their time to adjust to the new conditions. Most of the competitions fished over the weekend saw mostly jacks and smaller fish landed but the Newbridge pikers had a fine fish of 17lb landed in their Christmas league and over on Lough Derg, Chris fishing with Anglers Paradise had a super fish of 112cm. This fine pike wins Catch of the Week.

pike
A beautiful 112cm pike for Chris wins Catch of the Week

The windy weather has kept most boats ashore and our sea angling reports this week come from the shore. Flounder formed the mainstay of catches for anglers in both Wexford and Donegal. Locally cod and whiting are also being caught, particularly at some of the popular venues in Waterford and around Cobh and Cork Harbour.

Salmon anglers are reminded that licences are available for purchase from all the usual outlets as well as online. If you are purchasing online please allow sufficient time for delivery of orders allowing for Christmas posting and IFI office opening times over the holiday period: IFI offices will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, St. Stephen’s Day and New Year’s Day.

Be advised there are Yellow warnings for Wind and Rain on Saturday. Wet and windy with local spot flooding as heavy rain continues through the day. Strong southeast winds in the morning will become strong west to northwest in the afternoon, with the potential for damaging gusts in parts of the north later. Sunday will be a mostly dry day with just a few showers at the coasts. Temperatures will range between 5 and 7 degrees in the afternoon in mainly light southerly breezes. It’ll be cold on Sunday night once again as temperatures fall to between zero and plus 3 degrees. Wet unsettled weather will continue into next week.

Remember to keep an eye on our Facebook page as we’re doing our best to share all the details of the tackle shops, guides, fisheries and other angling services that are providing Christmas specials and vouchers. You’re sure to find the perfect angling present for someone else or maybe something for your own Christmas list…

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.
