Irish Angling Update – 05 July 2018

Appeal to anglers and fishery managers during hot spell

The incredible run of weather continued all last week and is forecast to stay with us for the next week or so. Although temperatures may be dropping it’s still going to be hot and no real rain is likely.

In light of high water temperatures and the current drought conditions Inland Fisheries Ireland is appealing to anglers and fishery managers to voluntarily cease salmon angling on catch and release rivers with immediate effect. We also advise that for conservation purposes on open rivers, anglers should cease angling once their daily bag limit is reached.

With regard to the use of keep nets on coarse fisheries, our advice is that this practice should be suspended.

Inland Fisheries Ireland will monitor the situation and issue updates as appropriate. Should the current weather conditions continue, Inland Fisheries Ireland may consider the introduction of emergency conservation legislation.

Unsurprisingly salmon and trout fishing reports are thin on the ground this week and we have no updates from pike anglers as most have opted to rest these special predators.

The settled, warm conditions have seen many take to the sea but at times even shore anglers found that their quarry was too busy staying out of the sun to be tempted by lure, bait or fly. Boat anglers can get out to deeper waters and some great reports came from those targeting sharks in particular. One boat from Clonakilty had 19 blue shark in one day and there were also some great reports in from Wicklow where there is an abundance of smaller shark species to target. Catch of the Week goes to Evan McGovern and the crew on Tigger for this huge catch of sharks. Bass fishing has not been easy but some good fish were caught and released recently at marks in Wexford, Waterford and Cork.

And now the weather…

Mainly dry, warm weather will continue over the weekend and for much of next week, with an advisory from Met Eireann in operation for drought conditions.  It will be cooler in coastal areas. Winds mostly light, easterly or variable. If you’ve never been out on a charter boat, now’s the time. Find the boat for you at https://www.fishinginireland.info/charterboats/index.htm

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Evan McGovern was on to tell us about his latest fishing adventure…
On Tuesday 3 July, 5 of us headed out of Clonakiltybay onboard Tigger skippered by Dave Edwards.  Blue shark was the target for the day.  A quick stop for bait along the way and off we went with a box full of mackerel and pollack.  We arrived at the shark grounds and were kept busy all day.  We ended up with 19 blue shark boated and a few dropped runs.

There seem to be no shortage of shark at the moment.  The largest was a lovely fish with a fork length of 175cm.  Edging closer and closer to that magic 185cm for the length based specimen.

Tigger is a purpose built Procharter 31 angling boat, powered by a 330HP diesel engine and equipped with all necessary safety equipment. Reef and ground drift fishing is generally the most productive method with the potential to catch in excess of 20 species if you adapt your lures and baits accordingly. From mid June through to October it’s usually possible to target the blue shark fishing that is predominatly between 10-15 miles off the estuary.  All sharks are released and recent seasons have seen larger species such as mako and threshers being sighted more frequently.

Eamonn Entices Boyne Trout to Nymphs and Dries

Suir trout

Well known angler, casting instructor and rod designer Eamonn Conway has been in contact to let us know that he had an outing on the River Boyne yesterday. Water levels are extremely low and clear at the moment and the best activity is either early or late but as usual Eamonn was able to entice some nice fish to his offerings despite the bright sunshine.

Eamonn reports that he was out and about yesterday on the Boyne fishing in the Navan area for trout and had a quite successful day, he hooked plenty of trout on nymphs and some on dries also. Eamonn advises that the trout   seem to like the turbulent water as it offers better cover from the sun. Not much in the way of fly activity save a few sedges scurrying around in the shaded areas under the trees.

Public Consultation: Coarse Fish Regulations

6lb Tench
6lb Tench

Inland Fisheries Ireland is seeking submissions from interested parties to update and amend the existing Coarse fish Byelaw currently in operation in Ireland.

Inland Fisheries Ireland intends requesting the Minister to amend the existing byelaw with more updated regulations that will better enable the management of coarse fish species in a sustainable manner.

The key byelaw to be addressed:

  • Byelaw 806, 2006 – Conservation and prohibition on sale of coarse fish

The areas being considered for review are:

  • Catch and release measure for Tench (Tinca tinca) and Bream (Abramis brama) – any fish inadvertently captured to be handled carefully and returned without avoidable injury to the waters from which they have been taken.
  • Movement of live coarse fish – To prohibit the removal and transfer of any live coarse fish species to other waters and to return all fish captured and temporarily retained alive back to the waters from which they have been taken on cessation of fishing.

Inland Fisheries Ireland may, as part of the process, arrange a public consultation meeting if deemed necessary, but all submissions must be received in writing and may be published on the Inland Fisheries Ireland website at www.fisheriesireland.ie

Submissions to be sent by post to the Inland Fisheries Ireland, Ashbourne Business Park, Dock Road, Limerick or alternatively by email to: [email protected] referencing Coarse fish public consultation.

Closing date for receipt of submissions is at 5pm on 8 August 2018.

Ballyshunnock is also fishing well with Tench being the main catch at present and water levels are up on the lake at the moment!  Weights being caught are averaging 3lbs to 7lbs.   Ballyshunnock has been a hive of activity lately with the lake hosting a range of angling related events.  One of the recent events saw St Mary’s Primary School, Dungarvan attending Ballyshunnock for a field trip regarding fishing on the lake. Some of the staff from IFI was on site on the day to give an insight into Macro invertebrates and fishing techniques.   Ballyshunnock also held a fishing course for disabled Anglers on the lake recently and by all accounts an enjoyable day was had by the participants.

Some big Suir trout in the evenings but quiet with high temps

Due to the rise in temperatures, Trout fishing has been quiet of late with a few larger trout rising during the evening on the River Suir in the Cahir area. A local angler in the Carrick area hooked a 4lb trout during the evening of the 3rd July also

Fish care in hot weather.   We would kindly ask all Anglers to be mindful that water levels are quite low on most water courses at the moment and because of this fish can be more easily stressed.  Using keep nets unnecessarily may cause fish fatalities.

Bio Security: As always, we would kindly like to remind all who use Ireland’s watercourses to please use appropriate biosecurity measures for themselves so to help prevent the spread of invasive species in and out of the water.

Water Safety: The Carrick staff would kindly like to remind all about the importance of using Life Jackets in and around water as they really do save lives. Adequate Flotation devices should always be worn and it especially sets a template regards water safety where younger Anglers are present.

“Take only memories, leave only footprints”. The Carrick staff would like to ask all who are using the water courses in the area to be mindful of littering and to please use bins provided or take home their rubbish.

Sun Safety: As Ireland is currently enjoying one of the warmest summers in decades we are advising Anglers and all who use the water courses in the SERBD to use adequate sun protection and cover up where possible. It is not advisable during these hot days to spend prolonged periods of time exposed to the sun, especially in or on water.

Salmon fishing has been quieter this week due to the warm spell and low water levels, although water levels remain low at about 13.5C.  There has been a run of a small number of grilse encountered around the Carrick area in recent days.  Jean-Loup Trautner’s guests have been lucky of late with good catches ranging in size.  For more info on fishing with Jean visit www.trautner-peche-irlande.com

Grantstown Lake has been fishing very well recently with specimen sized Tench being caught over the past number of weeks.  Tench fishing in general is doing very well on coarse lakes contacted in the district at the moment.
